Raiders take DT Lamarr Houston

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, April 23rd, 2010 at 4:07 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Lamarr Houston, a 6-foot-2, 300-pound defensive tackle, is the second defensive standout taken by the Raiders.

Oakland traded back twice and selected Houston after Baltimore took Sergio Kindle.

Analyst Jon Gruden called Houston “one of the sleepers of this draft.”

Oakland picked up a sixth round pick, No. 190, from New England for moving back from No. 42 to No. 44.

Unless they deal some of these picks or a player, the Raiders won’t pick again until the third round, No. 69, at which point Charles Brown could be gone.

Houston gained 3,300 yards as a high school running back in Colorado.

First impression?

Another solid pick _ an extermely productive player at Texas who excelled in big games and another who can help immeidately at a position of need.

Can he play in the NFL?

    RMR

Raiders drafted best MLB in this draft. They also drafted top 5 DT in this draft according to Mike Mayock and Kiper. AL Davis didnt mess it up like last year reaching for prospects. Thats why we excited, you would be laughing if AL took Campbell and a CB in the first two rounds but he didnt, he took football players not track stars, you need to get excited otherwise why do you fellow this team>? who did you want AL to draft>? Do you even watch college football?

Three picks, three starters, love it.

  • the_big_one_of_83

where is that who did this guy play to get drafted

  • RNOraiderFan

Is this it for today? Will the Raiders make a trade to get back into the 3rd round? Or will they unload a player to get into the 3rd, like Howard, Morrison, Mcfadden?

Raiders4eve, actually, yes, I can ask for more. Actual performance in the NFL. Doesn’t that mean anything? You know, wins and losses? Making the playoffs? God forbid, ….winning a Super Bowl? The same person who’s drafted for us the past 7 years, leading to 7 disastrous seasons, did the drafting today as well. And I shouldn’t ask for more? Heck, how about asking for a do over, with a different GM drafting for us? I’m pretty sure these guys are decent athletes. McClain would probably be good on a real NFL defense with actual modern day schemes. The DT we got today? Have to believe he would have gone in round 1 if he were really a pro bowler. But we’ll see. We have to see how these guys play. You guys get excited every draft, with visions of these players turning the franchise around. you have to see these guys play in NFL games before you know for sure.

\: you can see the glass half empty any time cant you? compare this draft to ANY draft this century for the raiders. mcclain will be a pro bowler. using your logic i guess joe montana would have gone in the first round if he was going to be a pro bowler!!! moron. go back to that hole you were hiding in dingleberry. houston will be a great DT for us. watch his video on you tube, thats a FOOTBALL PLAYER THERE. we’ve fixed the defense. FINALLY.

taylor mays is crying about pete carrol not taking him!!! LOL, the whiners just got a diva!!!!!!

    Veldheer is 6’8″, 315.

“When Veldheer showed up in Indianapolis for the Combine, there was nothing Division II about him. He ran the fastest three-cone drill and 20-yard shuttles of all the offensive lineman and came in fourth in the 40-yard dash with a time of 5.09 seconds.”

Hillsdale is a tiny college in Michigan, but I think the Raiders have a player here. Not just a combine superstar.

  • manassamauler

we did get a top 5 DT, and the best MLB and A STARTER AT OT IN THE THIRD ROUND!!!!! just admit that this was a great draft fakemaddenraider. ADMIT IT.

  • stabler

    From USA Today, on Veldheer:

Why he can make the jump: Has size, agility and dedication to succeed. Helped Chargers produce a 1,000-yard rusher each of his four seasons as a starter. Displayed durability in starting all 46 games. Showed strength in bench-pressing as much as 415 pounds. Served as co-captain each of last two seasons with Hillsdale gaining first Division II playoff berth in 2009.

    Projected round: Third

Coach’s quote: “He absolutely left no stone unturned when he came here to develop himself mentally and physically. A to Z, he did everything possible.” —Keith Otterbein, head coach at Hillsdale

Draft expert: “He’s a great athlete who worked out extremely well at the combine. He’s someone offensive line coaches can build with.” —Michael Lombardi, NFL Network draft analyst

6’8″ 315. sounds like our new LT to me. has to be better than henderson.

  • raidertalk

This is one of the better drafts in a while. I’d rather see our defensive picks be good, than have mediocre picks on both sides.

  • 310 Raider-scum

I would of like us to have gotten Asomoah, we should of gave T.B a 7th to move ahead of K.C, would have had instant starter to replace Carlise. But Veldheer is going to need some work.

Sounds like big azz ZBS guy. very mobile and can play TE?!!!

  • djohnnyg

Seriously MR, I get the feeling that even if the Raiders by some miracle were to win the Super Bowl, you would be critical and say “Well enjoy your Super Bowl, cuz you won’t see another one for quite some time. Winning a Super Bowl doesn’t mean jack if you can’t repeat. This championship means nothing because Al Davis was part of it. It’s a fake championship. The Raiders might have won, but they got sooo many breaks they couldn’t help but win. Al Davis is the luckiest man alive. I rank this Raider championship team as the worst Super Bowl winners ever. This team wouldn’t have a chance in hades if they would have played the ’85 Bears, period!!!”

  • djohnnyg

I have to admit, i have been really ticked off at Al Davis for giving us 7 straight disasterous seasons, and this draft doesn’t even sound like him, but hey, someone has to get some credit cuz I think the Raidsrs did a great job.

I would loooooove to see the Raiders sporting a tough “D” for once. I am cautiously optimistic. On paper, this looks really good.
