Raiders take OT Jared Veldheer
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, April 23rd, 2010 at 5:49 pm in Oakland Raiders.
So much for the Bruce Campbell to the Raiders storyline so popular following the combine.
With Campbell still on the board at No. 69, the Raiders made offense tackle Jared Veldheer, a Division II All-America from Hillsdale, their third round pick. Veldheer is 6-foot-8, 312 pounds.

Scouts give Hillsdale College’s Jared Veldheer high marks ahead of NFL draft
In a nine-day stretch this month, Jared Veldheer spent more hours than he could remember in the air or just waiting around for flights in airports while making personal trips to six NFL franchises.
Such is the life of a fast-rising draft prospect.
Veldheer, a 6-foot-8, 312-pound offensive tackle from Hillsdale College, is targeted as a third-round pick in the 2010 NFL draft, although he could go higher based on all of the pre-draft interest that surrounds him.
The former Forest Hills Northern standout participated in the Texas vs. the Nation all-star game, attended the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis, had eight teams put him through individual workouts on his college campus and been summoned to Arizona, Denver, New York, Oakland, Philadelphia and San Francisco for in-depth discussions about his future
He had a private moment with Oakland owner and general manager Al Davis.
“He told me he wants to get another Super Bowl ring. He said he hopes it works out that the Raiders get me in the draft because he likes my tape and he likes the way I run,” Veldheer said.

Strengths:
Outstanding Height — Large frame with room to bulk up — Excellent athleticism — Nimble feet — Able to slide laterally and mirror — Superb Balance — Quick and Agile — Excels in pass protection and can handle speed off the edge — Understands positioning and angles — Shows the ability to sustain blocks — Above average strength — Terrific mobility and range — Smart with superb awareness — Competitive and always gives max effort — Hard Worker — Durable — Big Upside.
Weaknesses:
Will be making a huge leap in competition — Short Arms — Has some issues when it comes to leverage — Isn’t a natural knee bender — Not real powerful — Doesn’t get a dominant push in the run game — Must improve hand use and show more violence — Trouble hitting targets in space — Needs to be a lot more aggressive — May lack a killer instinct.
Notes:
Was a four-year starter ( all 46 games ) for the Chargers — Named a 1st Team All-American in 2009 — Earned 1st Team All-GLIAC honors in 2008 and 2009 — Was elected a captain by his teammates — Brother, Aaron, played basketball at Hillsdale — Redshirted in 2005 — Blocked for a 1,000-yard rusher each season of his career — Really stood out at the Texas vs. The Nation all-star game — Could also project to guard at the next level — One of the premier small school prospect in this class — Still a bit raw and will require some development but is an intriguing prospect with the physical tools to play left tackle in the NFL.

Bruce Campbell still on the board.
BOy, he must have thought that 40x had him paid.
He should have kept his 17 starts in college.
Thank goodness the Raiders didn’t touch this kid.
April 23rd, 2010 at 5:58 pm
Raiders4eve, I don’t get excited about drafts. In my view, you can only screw up. Unless you’re like 0-16 and just drafted your franchise QB. Al didn’t screw up today, I’ll give him that. Should have taken a QB too but he addressed some interior needs. He could have done a lot worse. But to get excited? Best MLB in the draft? In this class? BFD. For all we know McClain will get steamrolled at this level. Who do we have in our organization that would know? Al? Don’t make me laugh!
April 23rd, 2010 at 5:59 pm
At least he made an All-something team, no matter what the level
April 23rd, 2010 at 6:00 pm
Hope Gradpectoral grows some friggin’ antler-antennae because an O-line of 6′7″ 6′8″ 6′3″ 6′8″ 6′8″ allows nothing for the Polish Pipsqeauk to see. (this is not Brees we’re talking about.)
Then again JaWho’sit could grow some cojones.
Kyle Boller, the next Plunkett!!!!!

But I’m not the expert.
Mr Davis is known for his late round gems.
I’m hoping he is atleast the value Mario Henderson was in rd 3.
JUST HOPE BABY !!!
April 23rd, 2010 at 6:04 pm
MR
Thats your opinion, finally AL has taken note of what this team needs, MLB, DT, OT most probably we will draft another OG and FB. Finally, this team needs has been addressed, as far as win or loss, we will see, but as an owner, he didnt screw it up so we in agreement. Just doing that he deserves a credit and we excited as Raider Nation fans. All we need is a QB, I dont like McCoy and Claussen fell for a reason. Next year the kid from Stanford should be available with a new rookie cap system, maybe even get Jason Campbell who knows, but I am happy with this team direction.
April 23rd, 2010 at 6:05 pm
I coach Oline and short arms are a plus. D linemen need long arms. All these draftniks don’t know what they are taking about when they drop a OL men because of short arms. Other short armed OTs Jake Long. Joe Thomas, how did tey work out? Longs arms are only a little over 32″ long.
April 23rd, 2010 at 6:05 pm

April 23rd, 2010 at 6:05 pm
Jared, Enoch’s father, lived for 962 years. Now there’s a draft pick looking at the long term picture!
April 23rd, 2010 at 6:06 pm
So is Jared a power blocker or a zone blocker?
Looks to me like he does both with no penalties.
Big upgrade at RG
April 23rd, 2010 at 6:06 pm
Can’t be mad at Al this year in the draft. He is getting good value and drafting at positions of need.
Even traded down a few times.
April 23rd, 2010 at 6:06 pm
Now if we can just snag Pike or LeFevour in the 4th or trade that pick for Jason Campbell, we’ll be good to go! Grab a guard, another WR, and a backup corner to fulfill Al’s DB crush in the later rounds, and this will be a pretty successful weekend for the organization.
April 23rd, 2010 at 6:07 pm
I said Al took note of what the team needs. But to start celebrating? I mean, this is Al Davis. Even if he addressed team needs it’s not like he knows what the flip he’s doing. He was addressing a team need at QB in ‘07, too. How did that work out?
April 23rd, 2010 at 6:08 pm
M
Maybe we can help him build a stone temple and dedicate it to al.
April 23rd, 2010 at 6:08 pm
And, it’s too bad people can’t say anymore that Kiffin was the one who wanted Russell, after Al blurted in that press conference that Russell was his guy. Nobody debunks Al loyalists more than Al himself.
April 23rd, 2010 at 6:09 pm

April 23rd, 2010 at 6:09 pm

April 23rd, 2010 at 6:09 pm

Kevin Gogan (1994)
To the rest of the league, Kevin Gogan was one of the dirtiest players during his time, but to the Silver and Black faithful, Gogan was a tough, no-nonsense player who typified the Raiders-outlaw attitude.
After seven seasons with the Cowboys, Gogan signed with the Raiders for three years and $3.6 million. The 6-7, 320 pound behemoth out of Washington State did not disappoint, as he started in all 48 games in his three-year career with the Raiders, which included his first Pro Bowl selection in 1994.

As an SEC fan it tears me that Tebow is in Denver, that being said…my 11 year old son in his S&B #80 Rice jersey says he suffered a concussion already and maybe won’t like altitude for the next 12 years… from the mouth of babes…coming to Oak-town /SF for Halloween… Jesus McCoy to C-land ends any hope of an offensive change of direction. I hope a TB is available in the later rounds…unless Boller turns into HOF [soon] Plunkett we are unfortunately pressing for a Jbust lazarus career
