Captain Kirk off to Jacksonville
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, April 24th, 2010 at 7:47 am in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders dealt middle linebacker Kirk Morrison to Jacksonville to get the pick to draft Clemson wide receiver Jacoby Ford in the fourth round, according to the NFL Network.
On his Twitter account, Morrison said, “Good morning. I’m a Jacksonville Jaguar.”
Also sent to the Jaguars was one of their two fifth-round picks, No. 153 overall.
Morrison’s fate was sealed the moment he got an original round tender. Due a $2.512 million salary, Morrison was not going to be retained as a reserve in the wake of the selection of Rolando McClain in the first round.

On Bruce Campbell:
From K.C. Joyner an espn and football outsiders contributor, he call himself the football scientist because he does statistical evaluations as opposed to traditional scouting reports:
A bit long but worth the read, specially now that we got Campbell.
“One of the traps that football personnel evaluators have to constantly remain vigilant against is overvaluing one facet of a position; this often happens, for example, with quarterbacks and arm strength. As important as velocity is for a passer, it is rather meaningless unless it is combined with accuracy. Passing power can be so alluring that it is easy to give it more credence than it deserves if one isn’t careful.
That mindset also comes into play for left tackles and pass blocking in large part because of “The Blind Side” (first as a book, then as a movie); the public’s perception of pass blocking is now at the loftiest of heights.
As important as protecting the passer is for the left tackle position, two moves made by NFL teams the past two seasons show that professional talent evaluators still understand the value of run blocking at that position.
The first was when the Miami Dolphins drafted Michigan left tackle Jake Long as the No. 1 pick in the 2008 draft. Long was a good pass blocker — but he was an elite run blocker, and it was the combination of these traits (not just his ability to protect the corner of the offensive line) that moved him to the top slot in the selection process.
The second was when the Philadelphia Eagles traded for Buffalo left tackle Jason Peters this past offseason. According to the metrics I compiled for Scientific Football 2009, Peters was coming off of a season where he was tied for last place with Houston’s Duane Brown for most sacks allowed among left tackles.
It may have seemed odd for the Eagles to be willing to part with a first and fourth round draft pick for someone coming off of a pass blocking season like that, but a look at the run metrics shows why Philly wanted Peters. Peters’ 90.9% Point of Attack (POA) run block win percentage was the 2nd highest among left tackles and 8th best among all offensive linemen. The Eagles obviously valued his ability to keep Donovan McNabb from getting hit but they also wanted his help in solving their short-yardage running woes and that was likely the clincher in closing the deal.
I bring all of this up because of what the metrics said about Maryland left tackle BRUCE CAMPBELL (currently listed as the No. 12 pick on Todd McShay’s Mock Draft 1.0). Let’s start with his pass blocking.
Campbell allowed three splash plays (defined as when a defender does something to negatively impact a passing play) in the five Terrapin games I broke down (at California, vs. Clemson, vs. Virginia, at Florida State and vs. Boston College).
As noted in the Trent Williams Draft Lab (read that here), the best professional pass rushers allow four or fewer splash plays in a season — so this isn’t a dominant number. Having said that, it does compare favorably to Williams’ splash play totals (four in five games) and was much better than the number tallied in Anthony Davis’ Draft Lab (eight splash plays in five games).
Going on those numbers alone, I would have considered Campbell a solid professional left tackle prospect, but his stock shot up considerably when reviewing the run metric totals. Campbell was at the Point of Attack (POA) of a running play 38 times and won 35 of his blocks. That equates to a 92.1% POA win percentage, which, as detailed in the Peters analysis, would be an elite number in the NFL. In addition, Campbell received double team blocking help on only 11 of those plays, so his one-on-one POA win percentage was a superb 88.9%.
The scouting eye notes on Campbell’s run blocking weren’t quite as good as numbers, but they were still almost entirely positive. One bright spot was that he was used as a pulling tackle quite often, which is an underrated skill that many NFL teams would take advantage of. His biggest issue is that he didn’t consistently finish his blocks. That would be a problem if it were due to a lack of effort, but in Campbell’s case it was inconsistent technique, so it is something that should be able to be coached out of him. From a pass blocking viewpoint, the major scouting eye concern is that Campbell received a lot of help from other blockers; this made me look back at the numbers, which showed Campbell received some kind of assistance from another blocker on 31 out of 120 dropback pass plays. That is a bit higher than one would expect from an elite pass blocker, but it is probably more due to Maryland’s heavy use of zone blocking and facing two teams with 3-4 schemes than it is a sign that Campbell has blocking issues.
The Football Scientist Lab Result: If I were to grade the three left tackles reviewed thus far in the Draft Lab series, I would rate Campbell No. 1, Davis No. 2 and Williams No. 3. I plan to focus on Oklahoma State Cowboys OT Russell Okung in an upcoming edition as well. Campbell is just as — if not more — adept at guarding the blindside as the other two and there is every reason to think he could develop into a dominant NFL run blocker. That doesn’t seem to be the consensus perception of his skills and that disparity means that he receives a TFS seal of approval.”

No surprise, but trade kirk and a 5th for a position that wasnt of need….
Not sure I like this move, sounds like the 1st move with Al Davis involved….
LOL – Its Saturday, maybe its AL’s first involvement with the draft because he wasnt aware it started Thur and Fri and based on our picks, that almost seems about right.
April 24th, 2010 at 7:49 am
Lamarr Houston was a nice pick.
This guy may not master a single position for a few years but he can give you snaps at every spot, he’s strong and fast, really athletic with a great motor and disposition.
Mike Wauffle rotated 6 or 7 guys while in NY and they had guys like Justin Tuck, Jay Alford and Kiwanuka who could move around, Houston brings that kind of versatility.
April 24th, 2010 at 7:49 am
Kirk’s dad Season Tickets might be available now.
April 24th, 2010 at 7:51 am
Well at least we have a KR man now

Called this draft perfectly.
Said Thursday we fix the MLB spot
Friday we fix the lines
Sat we trade Kirk and Howard.
A 5th and Kirk for a 4th. Exactly what I predicted!!
April 24th, 2010 at 7:52 am
OK, I feel alot better about Jacoby Ford than I did 10 minutes ago.
April 24th, 2010 at 7:53 am
Gg
Ford immediately moves ahead of watkins and probably higgins as well. I would say that he is our 4th WR, KR, and PR. Saves us roster spots…..bye bye Figurs

I want LeFevour and Thomas, hopefully we make some more trades.
April 24th, 2010 at 7:54 am
Got a kick returner in Ford. Don’t see him returning punts but definately kickoffs.
April 24th, 2010 at 7:54 am
Raiders had no return game.
Ford looks to be a return guy for Al
April 24th, 2010 at 7:55 am
So much for the 3-4 with Kirk and Ro in the middle.
Seriously, what were you guys who were saying that smoking?
April 24th, 2010 at 7:55 am
Some stuff on Jacoby Ford…
Strengths:
Speed, speed, and more speed. Probably one of the top 3-4 fastest players in college football. Added value as a kick returner. Has the mentality to improve himself as a receiver. Outstanding hands to secure the ball in traffic. Can be deadly on reverses and screens. Must be accounted for on every down. Fairly tough and durable for his size. Wants to be good. Has the strength to beat the jam attempt, although he’s rarely jammed because the defenders respect his speed so much.
Weaknesses:
His biggest weakness is his size, as relatively few wideouts his size succeed in the NFL. Because of his size, he’ll be an injury risk. While he’s a willing blocker downfield, he’s not a particularly good one. His route running will have to improve as he’s likely going to be a slot receiver at the next level.
Projection:
Proved himself as, possibly, the top slot receiver in the draft at the Senior Bowl. Could be selected as early as the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft if he runs sub 4.40 at the Combine.
April 24th, 2010 at 7:55 am
Good draft + Good schedule = Playoffs??????
Please don’t Mora me!
April 24th, 2010 at 7:55 am
It was inevitable. still got love for KM52. We didnt need to draft a KR when we just signed Yamon Figurs. Al has taken over.
April 24th, 2010 at 7:55 am
Adonis Campbell will be a massive flop, or as much as a flop as a 4th rounder can be.
April 24th, 2010 at 7:56 am
We could still get cam Thomas, Al Woods, Travis Ivey, or Jeff Owens as our two gapper/NT
April 24th, 2010 at 7:57 am
I still would have rather had Akwasi instead of Ford, how much will ford see the field in Schilens is health? Thats a big if though. I also hope Thomas falls to us in the 5th, that would be a dream come true.
April 24th, 2010 at 7:57 am
jamar chaney and owusu-ansah, another two i want. trade the dead weight and move up al.
April 24th, 2010 at 7:57 am

April 24th, 2010 at 7:57 am
Bruce “more boomstick” Campbell!!!!
April 24th, 2010 at 7:58 am
Jeff Owens is under 300, he is not a NT.
April 24th, 2010 at 7:58 am
More on Ford:
Ford is a pure deep threat who combined with running back C.J. Spiller to give the Tigers one of the most dynamic big-play duos in the country in 2009.
Despite starting only 27 career games, Ford had seven touchdowns of 50-plus yards.
Used as a receiver, running back, returner and even at quarterback, Ford posted 4,083 all-purpose yards on 297 touches — averaging an eye-popping 13.75 yards per touch — and 21 career touchdowns (15 receiving, two rushing, one throwing, two as a kick returner, one as a punt returner).
Any questions about Ford’s pure speed subsided when he won the 60-meter dash (6.52 seconds) in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in March 2009.
KEY– Due to his dynamic speed, Ford is often miscast as merely a deep threat. He showed improved toughness across the middle and attention to detail as a route-runner in 2009, emerging for the first time in his career as Clemson’s leading receiver. His 56 receptions for 779 yards and six touchdowns earned him second-team all-ACC honors.
Analysis
Release: Good lateral quickness and underrated upper-body strength to escape the jam. Few defenders attempt to jam Ford due to his elite timed speed, explosiveness off the snap and smooth acceleration.
Hands: Generally looks the ball into his hands to make the secure reception. Has a tendency to allow the ball to get into his chest and will drop a catchable passes on occasion. Can snatch the ball outside of his frame and has improved adjusting to poorly-thrown passes. Good toughness to maintain control despite taking a big hit. Good hand-eye coordination and balance to track the ball over either shoulder.
Route running: Used predominately as a deep threat early in his career and still learning the nuances of running routes. Developing as a route-runner but has good foot quickness and balance to ultimately excel in this area. Rarely asked to go across the middle but has made strides when he’s asked to do so.
After the catch: Faster in a straight line than he is quick. Doesn’t dazzle with his lateral agility to elude in tight quarters, but if given space can be quite elusive and make defenders miss in the open field. Good vision to find the lane and has an explosive burst to squirt through the hole and into the open. Lacks the strength and size to run through tackles and too often goes down with initial contact.
Blocking: Only a pesky blocker despite good overall strength and competitiveness. Provides a pop to the cornerback and looks to help downfield.
Intangibles: Has the physical tools to develop into a better pro than collegiate receiver. Well-built athlete with a football player’s physique — as opposed to that of a track star — who shows the willingness to run through traffic.
NFL Comparison: Ted Ginn, Jr., Dolphins

Mitch Petrus or Cam Thomas?
Cam Thomas will have great value if he’s still around as a 5th round pick, and could have a future at NT in the 3-4 looks the Raiders plan to run.
Petrus, however, could be an eventual replacement for Carlisle.
There’s also the off chance we go CB or QB. Who knows.

More Jacoby Ford, from cnnsi.com
Positives: Small yet explosive pass catcher who can score from any point on the field.
Immediately gets to top speed, shows a burst, and can turn it on in a single step. Has defenders playing back on their heels, makes the difficult over-the-shoulder reception, and consistently catches the ball with his hands.
Comes back to the ball out of breaks, makes himself an available target, and immediately transitions from making the catch running after the reception.
Nicely adjusts to the errant throw and looks the pass into his hands. Displays both quickness and speed in his entire game. Lays out and plays a physical game for smaller receiver.
Negatives: Struggles in battles and really needs a clear area to work in. Easily brought down at the point of attack by a single defender.
Analysis: Lacking the size to be a first or second wide out, Ford offers potential as a slot receiver and return specialist. He?s a super-fast prospect with an upside and should only get better as a physically matures.
Projection: 3rd

Not possible. Kwame was unique.
Here’s hoping that being coached up Campbell will be a force.

April 24th, 2010 at 8:14 am
overall, its been a decent draft for the raiders.. im not in love with trading kirk for what we got… i mean, think about… Al Davis gets a boner for measurable stats, its almost too predectable.

More Ford from NFP:
Ford is a world-class sprinter who simply plays at another speed.
He does a great job getting up to speed quickly and is a consistent vertical threat. He has a second gear to his game and has the speed to simply run by athletic cornerbacks downfield and track the ball.
He’s doing a much better job changing gears as a route runner, setting up his routes and using his great burst to separate from man coverage. Ford isn’t a natural catcher and consistently lets the ball get into his frame. He lacks ideal size and consistently is played off the line of scrimmage to keep him from beating press coverage.
He can be knocked off balance downfield easily and will struggle to fight his way through physical press coverage.
Yet he’s shown steady improvement as a route runner and possesses the body control to quickly change directions and explode out of his breaks.
He does a nice job of working back toward the ball and can uncover and find soft spots for his quarterback.
He is still learning the position but has the skill set and burst to consistently separate from man coverage.
Although he may not be a guy who can start on the outside, he looks like an ideal slot player who can create after the catch.
April 24th, 2010 at 8:17 am
Guy,
From what they said at the combine, Cox was a tough man-up corner. He’s still on the board because of off-the-field issues.
April 24th, 2010 at 8:17 am
We need Pete in here to fix the space / time thingy.
Northern D will then be ok.
April 24th, 2010 at 8:18 am
It’s obvious Raiders wanted kirk gone. To trade him to Jacksonville and give them a fifth rd pick for their fourth is a big time slap donwn.
Kirk was a originally a third round pick. Jacksonville gets a nice deal.

“Oakland’s last two picks have been interesting. They got Bruce Campbell and Jacoby Ford, who are typical Raiders’ picks, but they got them at the right time this year. Campbell is a developmental left tackle, with huge upside. Ford is the fastest wide receiver in the draft, and he has return ability too.
Also like thier first two picks, Rolando McClain and Lamarr Houston, which will instantly upgrade their defense.”

April 24th, 2010 at 8:34 am
Raider75,
they’re all talented until they’re exposed by the pro game itself.
April 24th, 2010 at 8:35 am
Do we bring back Terdell Sands? We actually have coaches that can teach now.
April 24th, 2010 at 8:35 am
Our OL depth is solidified. We still need a Center, I dont like any of these remaining rookies, hoping we sign Mawae.
Cam Thomas is a must have player, I dont think we will move up to draft him but I hope AL does that.
Jay Ross is still in the mix if we draft him a good prospect NT.
Mitch Pietrus would be a good addition, but I think Veldheer can play guard and Campbell can play RT.
We will not draft a QB, guarantee that!!!
April 24th, 2010 at 8:35 am
Cam Thomas is a MUST.
Jets now have Greene, Tomlinson, Washington & McKnight at RB ???
WOW
April 24th, 2010 at 8:36 am

Is it me, or was there a ton of talent in the draft this year?
==============================
You’re right. There were more underclassmen who came out because they might not get the same guaranteed money next year.
April 24th, 2010 at 8:37 am
If LeFevour falls to the seventh round, he could be a very solid option.
April 24th, 2010 at 8:38 am
big DT Aleric Mullins from NC is also on the board…
not sold on him or Ross.
get Cam Thomas!
trade Howard to move up or something
April 24th, 2010 at 8:38 am
I could settle for Jeff Owens as a NT, like 40+ bench press reps. Here are the nose tackles in this draft
http://walterfootball.com/draft2010NT.php

Terdell Sands is currently employed as a sign post.
It’s a slight up grade over his previous job as a blocking sled.
April 24th, 2010 at 8:38 am
Yes we will draft a QB and his name is J.Skelton…
April 24th, 2010 at 8:39 am
CB Donovan Warren on the board, he could be teh steal of the draft.
April 24th, 2010 at 8:39 am
There goes Akwasi.
April 24th, 2010 at 8:39 am
A hella good CB still there wow? I am surprised Perrish Cox is still available, very talented but concerns are his off field issues.

April 24th, 2010 at 8:40 am
turkey hunting was fun, but no luck today.
5:30-10am podunk time. saw a big gobbler, but it was 80 yards away
obviously too far to shoot. could have shot a hen with no beard, but that’s illegal – like getting Jacoby Ford in RD4
April 24th, 2010 at 8:40 am
A ton of interesting players left on the board..we can really get some talented guys with those 4 picks.

I was getting really tired of Todd Watkins perpetually being on the roster.
April 24th, 2010 at 8:45 am
I think so far the Raiders have A+, We got good value bringing in Campbell and Ford, we drafted for need MLB, DT and OT. We are on the right track.
With all that said, I hope we draft a NT, CB and FB. I believe we have three remaining picks.

Guys upfront have to keep the O-Line busy.
Houston is a great DE…we have no NT
April 24th, 2010 at 8:46 am
10 picks until its us.
Cam Thoms, any Nt from http://walterfootball.com/draft2010NT.php
Perrish Cox, Donovan Warren, Mitch Petrus, Newhouse, Tennant, Skelton in that order!
April 24th, 2010 at 8:46 am
Tony washington can be a possibility if they do not believe in Henderson.
April 24th, 2010 at 8:47 am
I will miss Morrison. Not so much as a player, but as someone who loved the Raiders, loved playing for them. You don’t see that too much anymore.
April 24th, 2010 at 8:48 am
SnB,
Do you know which NT’s are still available?
I don’t think they need a tall one. A six foot bowling ball would do nicely. Another Jerry Ball type.

Yeah.
It’s hard to say anything bad about the guy. Great motor, like Fargas, just lacked the physical ability to reach that next level.
April 24th, 2010 at 8:50 am
Lions have had a pretty good draft and offseason
April 24th, 2010 at 8:51 am
Time for a Fullback?
April 24th, 2010 at 8:52 am
ALl I am saying is that Terdell Sands played here before. I know he’s not very good…but maybe with better coaching he can at least fill in on 1st & 2nd downs.
I hope Thomas is there…but I am not counting on it…San Diego, Minnesota and K.C are ahead of us.
We are going to miss him…and after that who knows.
I think the Raiders are going to the UFA route…if that’s the case..just bring back Sands and pair him with Waufle
April 24th, 2010 at 8:52 am
7 more picks, Cam Thomas may end up in KC or Denver unless we move up =(
April 24th, 2010 at 8:53 am
Seahawks are killing this draft too, they’ve done incredibly well.
April 24th, 2010 at 8:53 am
I hope Al learned something with this Bruce Campbell situation.
April 24th, 2010 at 8:55 am
Please, if you doubt the Morrison exit, take a close look at the tape(s) of him on some of the big running plays made against us last year and you will clearly see that he was the main culprit. Almost ALWAYS in the wrong gap and would never take on blockers but try to avoid contact and move around them.
Seriously, I will not miss him at all (except for the fact he WAS a guy who loved the Raiders). In my opinion he was a major liability.
It’s all good guys.
April 24th, 2010 at 8:55 am
I’m going to be not so happy if the Chiefs or Broncos get Cam Thomas.
April 24th, 2010 at 8:57 am
Ohio State’s DT Doug Worthington is a nice option as well, 6′5 293, versatile kid, can play DT or DE in a 3-4, not much of a playmaker but he can tie up OL.
April 24th, 2010 at 8:57 am
Terdell had his chance. Many chances. Bring in someone who hasn’t had the big payday. Someone who has some fire in his belly and wants it more.
A NT with the intensity of Wisniewski.
April 24th, 2010 at 8:58 am
FB?
Virginia’s Rashawn Jackson is a solid all-around player.
April 24th, 2010 at 8:59 am
Morrison was my fav Raider since he was born with S&B blood from birth, but yes djohnnyg, I agree he would run around blocks way too much from the Mike spot.
Good for an OL or secondary, not from the MLB spot.
April 24th, 2010 at 9:00 am
South Carolina’s DL Cliff Geathers is a favorite of mine, 6′7 299, 20 years old, scheme versatile, tons of upside.
April 24th, 2010 at 9:00 am
Can we trade up by giving up our WR Higgins??? I think Ford will take over his position.
April 24th, 2010 at 9:02 am
i would like jeff owens at nt rd 5….
April 24th, 2010 at 9:04 am
Syracuse’s Arthur Jones, another of my favorites, active DT, similar to Houston though.

You always hate to see a guy who bleeds S and B go away(Morrison, Fargas), but you gotta believe the coaches poured over hours of tape and analysis on Morrison before deciding he wasn’t the guy. That MLB spot is so critical to the success of a defense, and with McClain in that spot, I am excited.
Could you imagine in your wildest dreams a Raider D that is actually feared and respected?

April 24th, 2010 at 9:13 am
The biggest difference between Ro and Kirk?
Put it this way. When Kirk shows up for work, he has $200 ultra-tight designer jeans on, a club shirt, a cool fedorra and massive diamond earrings, and a ultra-chic over the shoulder European man purse. All in all, it will take him about 20 minutes or so to undress and be ready for practice.
McClain will have been at the facility for an hour, reviewing film without whatever coach is in that early, he will be wearing raider sweats and no diamonds, and the only thing in his hand will be some fresh fruit. He will take about 5 minutes to get ready.
Which one sounds like a more azz-kicking MLB?
