Goethel added to LB corps
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, April 24th, 2010 at 11:35 am in Oakland Raiders.
Having traded Kirk Morrison earlier in the day, the Raiders added another linebacker to a crowded position group by drafting linebacker Travis Goethel in the sixth round, No. 190.
Goethel, 6-foot-2, 240 pounds, played at Arizona.

Al Davis got sick of Danny Southwick receiving all the props on thursday & friday so he locked him out of the war room on saturday
April 24th, 2010 at 11:38 am
Travis Goethel, cnnsi.com
Biography: Three-year starter awarded All-Conference honors as a senior. Totals last season included 57/7 after 71/7.5 as a junior.
Positives: Marginally athletic prospect with terrific instincts. Effectively diagnoses the action, remains disciplined with assignments, and positions himself to make plays on the ball. Aggressively works to get involved in the action, puts his shoulders into the ball-carriers, and is a hard hitter. Shows a good nose for the action.
Negatives: Lacks top lateral speed and is not fast to the flanks. Not a quick or sudden defender.
Analysis: Goethel is a thinking man’s football player with a terrific head on his shoulders. He makes up for his lack of athleticism with his ability to diagnose plays as they unfold. Could back up in the middle for a conventional system at the next level.

Practice Squad/Special Teams pick
Al and Cable are so high over the Campbell trade that they don’t care anymore.
They’re just laughing and throwing darts at a board now.
April 24th, 2010 at 11:38 am
Not sure about this Goethel guy. Near the bottom in strength for LBs, and posted the absolute worst 20-yd shuttle. Those are worrisome stats for a guy expected to track down shifty RBs (like Sproles) and make solid tackles.

Good instincts and can blow up plays up the middle.
April 24th, 2010 at 11:43 am
Called Goethel as a possible 5th or 6th round pick a while back. Seems like a prototypical Raiders linebacker. Good depth. Ricky Brown and Slade Norris beware…

Strange pick. High character/effort guy but limited athletically. Special teamer maybe, more likely practice squad bound.
Adds to an already crowdwed LB corps. There were still some decent OL and DL prospects on the board. Or even RB depth with Blount and Dwyer sitting there.

April 24th, 2010 at 11:45 am
More Goethel:
“One indication of a prospects’ draft stature is how many position coaches come to watch him work out at his school’s pro day…..Count Arizona State’s Travis Goethel (6-foot-2 1/2, 238) as a player on the rise.
Gil Brandt, of NFL.com, reports Arizona State LB Travis Goethel measured in at his Pro Day Friday, March 26, with a height of 6-foot-2 1/2, 238 pounds.
He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.58 and 4.62 seconds, the short shuttle in 4.22 seconds and the three-cone drill in 6.71 seconds. He measured a 9-foot-2 broad jump and took part in position drills.”
Well, most reports have him as a really smart player with speed issues, but 4.58 and 4.62 at 6′2 238 is excellent.
April 24th, 2010 at 11:46 am
From CBS: “Will be eluded in space because of lacking change-of-direction agility.”
I say again, he does not initially seem like a good guy to have out there when playing against Sproles twice a year.
But I won’t call it a wasted pick until he gets a chance to prove himself.

WHat a shame.
Message to Al….continue to let others make the picks for you! And let the coaches run the lockerroom.
April 24th, 2010 at 11:49 am
Now Al needs to go get T.O.
April 24th, 2010 at 11:49 am
Well good day Raider Nation and what a fine Saturday it is! We now have a QB. BSPN dudes were pretty high on Campbell. I think he’s legit and can make us better. Say goodbye to that fat, lazy POS Russell. Hey, and out replacement is black so maybe now we can speak our mind about Russell without being criticized for being racist by those racist bigots that frequent this blog. You know the ones.
What a fine day, folks! Except for a couple of picks, solid draft by Al & Co!
April 24th, 2010 at 11:49 am
THAt’s because DHB was an awful pick.
The value wasn’t there. Its fair game to bring that up.
But that’s last year. This year was the best draft I and trade day I’ve ever seen from the Raiders in all my years of following them.
April 24th, 2010 at 11:49 am
is Travis Goethel an upgrade over Howard, Brown, Nixon, Norris or Williams ???

Yeah, NFLN did just ream JR, like I’ve never heard a player reamed.
Every single announcer stated he wasn’t worth squat, adding if any team did take him it should be for the absolute minimum that he was already paid, and not a dollar more.
Whoever wins the battle in camp, the good news is if that guy goes down, it won’t be Russell going in.
Yep…a great day in Oakland.

“Was the waterboys fault…but WASN’T JR’S!!!”
And you would be wrong.
April 24th, 2010 at 12:01 pm
This isn’t a bad pick. It’s a 6th rounder for gods sake! That’s the round for reaches and projects. No player picked up this low doesn’t come without serious flaws or questions, whether it be physical, mental or injury. So the guy doesn’t time fast, but can he produce?
He’s also another heady LB. Could this show a shift in the Raiders warroom away from workout warriors and towards high football IQ? All the speed in the world isn’t effective if you use it to get quickly to the wrong place (ala Howard).
I’m also wondering if the combination of all the moves isn’t an indication that the team is going to add a 3-4 package. Not as the primary D but as a changeup. Lots of tweeners on the outside to play standup pass rusher and now two legit, smart, play making types to man the ILB spots. I think both Seymour and Kelly could be effective 3-4 ends. The only thing missing is the fat guy in the middle to play NG. Maybe the feed Jamarcus to Sands to come up with the combined mass . . .

I have to say this was a good draft. But there’s always the Al factor. It wouldn’t be fair to credit Cable for these picks because even if that were the case, Al let him do it, and Al would still deserve credit for that. But there’s always the Al factor. There’s always the Al factor. He just finds ways to screw things up, and I’ve got 7 years worth of examples, which happen to be the most recent 7 years, btw. Changed his tune? History and mountains of study on human behavior say no. I see the Raiders struggling this year mainly due to lack of organization, focus, etc., and Cable being scapegoated. Then we have this talent in a rudderless system. Back at one.

I still don’t like our QB depth.
Campbell is bonafide starter.
But behind him isnt much…they’re all expendable and dont compliment Campbell’s skill-set and offensive playbook of vertical passing.
Apart from having all the camp arms there, for now, but ultimately we still need someone to sit at back-up.

He wanted Brady Quinn and that is another disaster too. I wanted AP and nobody at Raider HQ wanted him.

I think Campbell coming to Oakland puts the onus squarley on Russell to either throw down the gauntlet and fight for his pro career or finally end it as the undisputed, unbeatably worst draft pick ever in the history of the game.
Even with $30 million dollars thats a tough pill to swallow.
Russell’s stated he will not take a pay cut. If he doesn’t he’s gone.
If he does, he can theoretically stay and compete if he’s even into that. If not, someone MAY take a flyer on the massive dissapontment.
I hope he steps up and becomes who he should be. The starting Qb of the Oakland Raiders.
If not, infamy awaits…

Analysis: Goethel is a thinking man’s football player with a terrific head on his shoulders. He makes up for his lack of athleticism with his ability to diagnose plays as they unfold. Could back up in the middle for a conventional system at the next level.
Somebody in Alameda has entered bizzaro land. This is the opposite profile of your prototypical Raider pick. I say bring on more smart players with good instincts.
April 24th, 2010 at 12:15 pm
GG — Boller has the vertical arm. But Gradkowski and Frye have the Campbell feet. It’ll be interesting to see which two stick. Personally, I think Grads ends up number two, because he’s a similar style to Campbell’s in terms of mobility and they won’t require a different playbook that more of a pocket passer like Boller or Russell (and I use the term “passer” here extremely lightly) would need.
If anything, I think that you sacrifice the great long arm. If you run a west coast like dink and dunk with a power running game, you can still surprise with the quick strike deep play where the ball doesn’t need to travel 50+ yards in the air. You just need to catch the safety cheating up and throw the ball as soon as the WR has a step on the CB.

Thanks for the input on this topic. I dont think Campbell is suited to a WCO tho, he did well in Washington in a style not suited to his skill-set, but i can see his role here being vertical, and a lot of play-action deep passing, power run offense to compliment that. Spread the D out with 3 and 4 WR sets, sometimes up the middle with Bush/McFadden, sometimes swing passes to them, other times deep to one-on-one situations Murphy, Schilens, DHB. It can be dangerous now with a bonafide franchise QB in Campbell.
I guess Gradkowski will end up back-up if Russell doesnt lift. But ultimately Gradkowski, Frye, Russell, Boller are all not long-term back-up answers either. That’s why i raised the concern. Why i wish we had taken LeFevour, for instance. Then we could roll with just two QBs.

April 24th, 2010 at 12:38 pm
Wassup Dell!
Man … played 18 holes this morning thinking it wouldn’t be that much going on.
Boy was I wrong!
Only a 1 year extension for Campbell?
Guess we are not quite sure about him, huh?
April 24th, 2010 at 12:38 pm
Guys, who do we pick? Donovan Warren would be a hell of a steal here to play our 2nd CB position but he may end up an undrafted FA. I believe he was the 2nd prospect before the combine and everything.
April 24th, 2010 at 12:39 pm
Raiders best draft choice is coming up …
who will it be?
April 24th, 2010 at 12:39 pm
All I want is a professional group of QB’s that know the playbook and put in the effort during the week. They need to be the hardest workers during the week to lead the men. I think we finally have them now.
However, I would lmao if Al Davis puts out a presser…the greaness of the Raiers lies in the hands of the great Jawalrus….
April 24th, 2010 at 12:40 pm
Owens, Ross, and Tony Washington still on the board. Same as Ciron Black and Brandon Carter

I think Jason Campbell doesnt compare to JaMarcus because JaMarcus is on his own Island.JaMarcus has no commitment, and he makes a TON of $.Campbell is more agile. Not as expensive. Also,to call him JaMarcus light is a good thing.a BIG part of Russell’s problem is weight,so if we are getting a “lighter” version…..
April 24th, 2010 at 12:41 pm
another CB?…thats a waste…
April 24th, 2010 at 12:41 pm

jamarcus russell leaning towards politics in his future
April 24th, 2010 at 12:43 pm
“Stabler, you going to give Lane Kiffin his props for bring right about Russell? Had Al listened to him 3 years ago, we’d be 3 years ahead developing our passing game.”
Absolutely he was right. I still think Kiffin is a backstabbing weasel who will be gone from USC in three years, but yes, he was right on about Jameatloaf and many other things.
April 24th, 2010 at 12:43 pm
we need cbs for depth, we had only 3 when the draft started. not bad at all.

I don’t even think analysts and reporters can believe how well Oaklands draft went.
I’m swinging wildy between delerious happiness and cautious optimism.

yeah i would actually have to give the raiders an A in this draft. gave them a muchlower grade last year! no reaches this year, no miticheling around either. loveit. analysts always crap on oakland. AD has brought nothing about high character players. raider are NEVER in the news for any character issues with players. really good team, just needed to draft better, well this is the first step!

First, Goethel is NOT from Arizona (U of A). He was an Arizona State University Sun Devil. He is a very consistent player. He doesn’t have the measureables but he does make tackles. If memory serves me correctly, he was the leading tackler on ASU for at least a couple of seasons. He is a player that is the opposite of the type of draft choice that the Raiders are usually criticized for. He doesn’t have the big measureables, but he shows up for every game and makes tackles.
