Goethel added to LB corps

Having traded Kirk Morrison earlier in the day, the Raiders added another linebacker to a crowded position group by drafting linebacker Travis Goethel in the sixth round, No. 190.

Goethel, 6-foot-2, 240 pounds, played at Arizona.

    Nnamdi21,

    It would be a huge upset for JaDavis to beat out Campbell and the Gym Rat….those two will out work him and Campbell has NFL success behind him.

    ======================

    From the rumors and what we’ve seen fromhim it sure seems that way…Take the pay cut and PRAY you can work your way back Russell.

  • Zymurge

    Russell is done. The fact that he won’t take a paycut means that he’s already counted his NFL earnings and is going to take the easiest way out. Why on Earth would he take less money and then have to go “work” to earn more? That’s something that a competitor would do, and he’s proven definitively that that is what he is not.

    ======================================
    As a matter of fact, yes, I do. Not only did Kiffin not want Russell but he also knew what he could and couldn’t do when forced to work with him. And the ‘could’ was very limited for sure. Many of the clowns that frequent this blog criticized Kiffin for holding Russell back. LMAO! Yeah, holding him back from exposing himself as a fraud, maybe!

    Anyway, I’m just glad Al has realized Russell is a fat, lazy, bumb and is ready to move on.

    Yeah, NFLN did just ream JR, like I’ve never heard a player reamed.
    Every single announcer stated he wasn’t worth squat, adding if any team did take him it should be for the absolute minimum that he was already paid, and not a dollar more.

    Whoever wins the battle in camp, the good news is if that guy goes down, it won’t be Russell going in.

    Yep…a great day in Oakland.

    Now Priest, NnamdiNumNum’s and Seymour/Oakglen/Debo/BS/Cappy/etc can start the excuses why their “boy” JR busted out, like everyone has been saying for the last two years..

    Travis Goethel.

    Greg Biekert was a 7th round pick back in 1994, another smart player with terrific instincts who was deemed not athletic enough.

    You never know.

    The difference between Goethel and Stryker Sulak/Slade Norris?….

    Goethel is a true ILB, Sulak and Norris didn’t really have a position.

    GG — Boller has the vertical arm. But Gradkowski and Frye have the Campbell feet. It’ll be interesting to see which two stick. Personally, I think Grads ends up number two, because he’s a similar style to Campbell’s in terms of mobility and they won’t require a different playbook that more of a pocket passer like Boller or Russell (and I use the term “passer” here extremely lightly) would need.

    If anything, I think that you sacrifice the great long arm. If you run a west coast like dink and dunk with a power running game, you can still surprise with the quick strike deep play where the ball doesn’t need to travel 50+ yards in the air. You just need to catch the safety cheating up and throw the ball as soon as the WR has a step on the CB.

    ——

    Thanks for the input on this topic. I dont think Campbell is suited to a WCO tho, he did well in Washington in a style not suited to his skill-set, but i can see his role here being vertical, and a lot of play-action deep passing, power run offense to compliment that. Spread the D out with 3 and 4 WR sets, sometimes up the middle with Bush/McFadden, sometimes swing passes to them, other times deep to one-on-one situations Murphy, Schilens, DHB. It can be dangerous now with a bonafide franchise QB in Campbell.

    I guess Gradkowski will end up back-up if Russell doesnt lift. But ultimately Gradkowski, Frye, Russell, Boller are all not long-term back-up answers either. That’s why i raised the concern. Why i wish we had taken LeFevour, for instance. Then we could roll with just two QBs.

  • Nnamdi21

    Sick of how NFLN touted guys like Rolle and Tebow even though they’re skills are questionable.

    Blatant propaganda to do damage control after Big Ben’s rap-ey ness.

    Glad all the pre darft stories about these two will die down for a while.

    Yuck.

    We all know the NFL has long been the national felon league.

    Do something about it rather than touting a loser like Teboner.

  • itzSteve

    I think Blount showed plenty of character by doing absolutely everything that Oregon required at the end of last season. He was rewarded with playing time at the end. After the punch in the season opener, I never thought he would see the field again…

  • Try Some Reality

    Yeah, I want to see priesttj defend this one. A conundrum indeed. Wasn’t he in here the other day proclaiming that Russell would be the starter this year? LOL!. And isn’t Jhill in here daily saying talking about how everyone is crazy for reading between the lines in what Cable says to the press! Cable talked over and over about not wanting knuckleheads. LOL! It’s obvious to all who he was referring to.
