Unofficial list of undrafted UFAs
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, April 25th, 2010 at 1:44 pm in Oakland Raiders.
An unofficial list of undrafted free agents signed by the Raiders according to nfldraftbible.com, one of the more diligent sites at tracking post-draft signings:
RB Andre Anderson, Tulane
FB Manase Tonga, BYU
WR Trent Guy, Louisville
OL Alex Parsons, USC
DE Alex Daniels, Cincinnati
LB Brashton Satele, Hawaii
Note: The Raiders often don’t confirm undrafted signings until they arrive at minicamp, and usually there is a name or two of a player who doesn’t actually wind up with the club or a new name.

what about that 6′6” 350lb nt heard? ever heard of him?
April 25th, 2010 at 1:59 pm
We are doing a great job.
-Tonga was one if the best blocking FBs in this draft class.
-DE Alex Daniels is 6′2 265, ran 4.65 & 4.55, and had 31 reps on the bench. He had 8 sacks last year.
-Alex Parsons was rated as a top 15 OG.
-Andre Anderson is a descent back, and had 1016 yards and had a 4.3 ypc avg.
I love this draft!!!!!
April 25th, 2010 at 2:03 pm
I look for the Raiders to bring in more talent as teams begin to make cuts.
Could be some veteran o-line players looking for work after the draft shakes out.
April 25th, 2010 at 2:03 pm
Yes, also Kellen Heard (NT, O-lineman at times, RT)and Chane Moline (FB)signed but unofficial.
April 25th, 2010 at 2:03 pm

I like the Alex Parsons signing. Big, physical kid from the West Coast, has a lot of upside, can play special teams.
April 25th, 2010 at 2:10 pm
Yeah, thas the blog I kick it at, since some here get out of line too much.(few)
April 25th, 2010 at 2:11 pm
Forgot Kellen Heard, he should make the Cody fans happy:
He was a project on the O-Line and a very talented DT that plays with a mean streak. (SOB will love this guy) At 6-6, 355, he is quite a load on either side of the ball who is best known for being a tough defender who hit Colt McCoy late in 2006
April 25th, 2010 at 2:11 pm
GREAT photo Stubblebuzz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
April 25th, 2010 at 2:12 pm
Chane Moline is a NICE signing. Really solid kid, was a captain on that UCLA team with Brian Price. This Moline kid is not an incredible athlete, but he is a VERY good football player!

Seymour-exactly-another FOOTBALL PLAYER.
April 25th, 2010 at 2:19 pm
this might not be too popular of a statement but it looks as if Cable has had a lot of influence in this draft-he and the rest of the coaching staff.
April 25th, 2010 at 2:19 pm
just what we need!
April 25th, 2010 at 2:20 pm
It’s funny how in last years draft after DHB all of a sudden football players started to arrive: Mitchell, Shaughnessy, Murphy, Norris, Brandon Myers. I think Al took notice. This year, we got FOOTBALL PLAYERS: McClain, Houston, Veldheer, McFadden, Goethels.

Abd this was and is his draft…..Yo read it and weep you haters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
April 25th, 2010 at 2:22 pm
Hey everyone,
What a great weekend. I am still riding high.
It was nice to see the Raiders operate like they had a real front office.
It seems to me that Cable was given the authority to make the picks in this draft.
He will live or die with it, in Als eyes I’m sure.
I feel like for the first time since Gruden, the coach is getting some control over things.
At this rate I might even re-up my season tickets.
April 25th, 2010 at 2:22 pm
Great Draft!!!!!!
We added:
QB J Campbell (starter)
OLB: Wimbley (starter)
MLB: McClain (starter)

That’s kind of the joke around here: these knucklehead “fans” think Al Davis sits in some empty room with a rotary phone with a pad and pencil. The coaching staff and scouting staff have HUGE say in what happens: See Gruden drafts 1999-2001 and Tampon Bay 2002-2008 and see the similarities. And see why Tampon Bay is drafting third ahead of us.

thought the draft was ok, i mean i like the mcclain pick but i wanted him paired up with a huge guy at the nose. i’m mystified why we want houston as an end cuz he could probably push kelly for his position or even bounce his overpaid azz. veldheer and campbell, can they contribute anytime soon? i hope so.
it may be too much to ask for but i wanted someone who could step right in to start on the fringe rg, rt positions.still could get some guys along the way, from cuts, to add to this team. just hope for the best like all.

i saw two games from jason campbell last year, one against the raiders where he took a beating early on but still outlasted our starting qb and looked good when he had time, then i saw him on a sunday night game vs. dallas and looked absolutely horrible with anouncers criticizing footwork and mechanics which was affecting accuracy like someone we know. but on his defense, he was in constant pressure behind a makeshift
o-line and a surging d-line of dallas. all in all, i still think he might be the best option at qb we got heading into the season. 2012 4th. done deal.

Wrapping the Oakland Raiders draft
April 24, 10:49 PMOakland Raiders ExaminerPatrick Patterson
he 2010 NFL draft is in the book and the Oakland Raiders acquired 12 football players, 9 rookies and 3 veterans.
Prior to the draft they traded draft picks for Kamerion Wimbley and Quinten Groves, both of whom are hybrid defensive linemen/linebackers.
The Raiders their first pick on the Rolando McClain who was widely regarded as the best inside linebacker in the draft to shore up their leaky run defense. In the second they grabbed Lamarr Houston, who was acclaimed as the top defensive lineman at the time the Raiders picked.
This was an unusual top two picks for the Raiders as there was none of the usual sense of flash or workout warrior ethos that has been prevalent. It was a case of solid nuts and bolts drafting. In a stark contrast from the 2009 draft, where the combination of Darrius Heyward-Bey and Michael Mitchell were universally mocked, the Raiders picks were continually praised.
Morrison simply tweeted, “What a morning it has been for me. I feel like I got drafted all over again today. Unbelievable feeling.”
In three of their final picks, the Raiders drafted defensive backs. Walter McFadden in the 5th, along with Jeremy Ware and Stevie Brown in the seventh. The non defensive back they added was linebacker Travis Goethel.
For their third round, the Raiders stayed with the theme of the trenches when they added offensive tackle Jared Veldheer. With the first pick of the fourth round they selected the offensive tackle that many had them taking in the first round, Bruce Campbell.
They made their first move that could be considered “typical raiders” when they dealt linebacker Kirk Morrison and the 153rd pick for the 108th pick to select wide receiver Jacoby Ford. Despite it being common knowledge that Morrison was on his way out, it seemed like a young four year starter at linebacker would command more value than a move up from a fifth round pick to a fourth.
After Morrison was traded, Raiders CEO Amy Trask released a statement saying, “Al spoke with Kirk this morning and thanked him for his service over the years. Mr. Davis also told him that the doors to this organization will always be open to him.”
The Raiders picks from Ford downwards were not nearly as acclaimed as the moves made in the first two days. However, the Raiders got the steal of their draft weekend when they traded their fourth round pick in 2010 to the Washington Redskins for Jason Campbell. Campbell was often maligned in Washington, but he has improved every year in the league, his career stat line is better than any quarterback under contact to the Silver and Black

How does predicting that we would go 4-12 or 5-11 mean anything? I love the Raiders dearly, but I (and many other fans) have predicted horrible records for years… that doesn’t mean that you know a damned thing. Posting a prediction of a record carries NO WEIGHT. Maybe if you posted something that contained sentences or actual thoughts, opinions, and evaluations, that might be different.

From what you’ve said, it seems that you predicted the record correctly, but were wrong about which teams we would beat and why. That kind of invalidates the prediction of the record, doesn’t it? If you just say “5-11″ and we go 5-11, then you’re right. If you say, “We will win the first 5 (and here’s why) and lose the last 11 (and here’s why)” but then we lose the first 11 and win the last 5, your prediction is invalid in my opinion.
You can’t say “got the teams wrong, but nobody’s perfect” and then still say that your prediction was right. If you went far enough to pick WHICH games we would win, but were wrong about that, then the 5-11 prediction is meaningless.

At UCLA in 04-05 Cable was the Offensive Coordinator and ranked 5th in the nation in scoring offense. Prior to UCLA, he was at the University of Colorado as Offensive Coordinator which was ranked 14th in the nation in total offense. All the offensive coordinator does is x and o. So, either you are wrong, or opponents just let Tom Cable win because they like him. Which is it?

____________
What scheme would be best used for JaMarcus and the Raiders? not sure what scheme is in place now for the offense and defense just would like to know what you all think we should be using and why.
Great Question…
It is also a question that should have been asked prior to signing Jeff Garcia…who, is a completely different QB than JR…..but that’s getting off topic…
You guys mentioned Shotgun and more no-huddle…and I agree to an extent…however…the Raiders Defense does not warrant our Offense running a no-huddle style of Offense…..we are not consistent enough Defensively to put added pressure on our defense just yet…..IMO……it would just hurt our Defense that much more…
Actually, To be honest…we don’t have the coaches who can teach the kind of scheme needed to run a successful no-huddle attack…which could take advantage of mismatches in personnel and in the scheme….we simply don’t have the confidence to teach these ideas let alone execute this type of game plan…last season Matt Ryan and the Falcons used an ON THE BALL approach, which is similar to a no huddle….against us in Oakland to perfection….the Raiders were so out coached in this game it made me sick….a rookie QB was lining his Offense up in a set….if he liked what he saw he’d run the play…if he didn’t…he change the set…and call something else…the Raiders never adjusted their scheme…completely ridiculous….ignorant…stupid…whatever you want to call it…there is no excuse for it…NONE
Instead…our staff focus on the prehistoric techniques that afforded them the opportunity to coach in the NFL…essentially taking no REAL risks….implementing no new ideas…and seem comfortable running the same stuff teams have been using for 20 years….Zone blocking is popular because it gives the Running Back a choice…and allows for a cutback….and also allows for a decent play action passing game off of it with a long running fake…occupying the linebackers…blah blah blah…..HOWEVER…power football is all but forgotten by most teams….no Guards pulling anymore…no crack blocks by WR’s…Why? Pittsburgh is one of the only teams who used these ideas…as well as the zone concepts….
To look more closely….the money these men are making doesn’t allow for the staff to want to take un-necessary risks with their players…high salaries affect decision making…..which…is BS….so because of money, contracts, agents, and the basic need of the individual player has a huge effect on the product we see on the field….Football used to be about toughness….now it has evolved to be a much different reality…
Last season we saw a few teams implement some newer concepts and saw some success….although ideas like the Wildcat formation have been around football for many many years….the NFL is bringing some of these back with a few new twists. but it’s still football….Now…if a team took the Wildcat stuff and used it as a no-huddle package…perhaps inside the red zone…you might have yourself a nice little Offensive scheme/package….hint hint….
Why did we get Russell if we aren’t going to utilize his strengths….?
Makes no sense….

A charateristic of a GREAT defense first and foremost would be that it MUST be ADAPTABLE. In my opinion a Team must run a 3/4 and a 4/3 interchangeably.
The first idea that cannot be misunderstood is that our Defensive Line is the most important position on the entire TEAM. Why? Simple, if you have a good defense you can win games without a good offense. If you have a great Offense without a good defense you will be outscored many times. Thus, your Defense is more important than Offense when drafting players of need. Back to the Defensive Line argument. If I have 3 or 4 men who can occupy the 5 Offensive Linemen then “WE” have a mismatch wherever “WE” choose to use it. If “WE” can contain the run game with these 3 or 4 men, “WE” can do whatever “WE” want if “WE” are adaptable to the formation presented to “US”.
Communication is the key. Understand Offensive Sets is vital to the continuity of the Defense and the conceptual ideas behind why we do this or that. Each member of the Defensive unit must understand his role inside of each play. We are never in a defensive state of mind, rather, we are forcing them to find our weak spot by exposing theirs.
Too often teams in the NFL play it safe. This happens because most coaches are all content with their million dollar job and don’t want to make any mistakes, they essentially don’t want a loss to be their FAULT. So, coaches who actually do take risks are at a higher level than those who do not. Risk taking is all about timing.
These are some of the qualities of a stellar defense from a coaching perspective. Obviously talent is important, but talent is not something I rely on, I am a coach, my job is to get the most out of a particular athlete, to motivate him and his team, while his job is to perform.
April 25th, 2010 at 3:35 pm
No, I’m not saying to copy San Diego…although I do like their scheme….
Their weaknesses are teams who run the ball against their 3/4 scheme out of a Double TE set.
Two TE’s, one on either side, with an Ace back is a huge advantage against a 3/4 scheme. The Chargers only have 3 men at the point of attack (LOS-Line of Scrimmage) and if you line up a double tight you have 7 men against their 3 with some extra space to play with.
A balanced 2 TE set can always be used against a 3/4 defense in the run game. The defense is forced to show their hand and pick a strength against a balanced offensive set….Once you know where they set their strength, you can many times know the rules behind their intentions, based on film preparation…When they start to cheat, you play action off of it….Very similar to the what the Colts do…although they have been varying it a bit the last couple years….
The COLTS CHARGER matchups the past couple years have been huge chess games, if you know what you’re watching.

I remember way back when I first started posting here (about a month and a half ago)…
Lots of people got along decently with me, a few seemed really cool and connected with me, and a few were total douchebag retards. It’s pretty much like being anywhere else in life. I’m liked by many, hated by few, loved by fewer. Nothing particularly special about the dynamic unless you’re someone with no life in the real world and have to spend all your time calling radio shows and begging for attention on blogs because no one likes you and you’re a pathological liar and a racist retard with a chip of your own stupid making on your shoulder.

Elkins,
I went to the link on ZBS and am amazed at your ability to grasp concepts that are difficult for middle-schoolers to handle. However, anyone who played football past the age of 12 should know more about ZBS and Power/Drive Blocking philosophy than you included in your little dictum. Did you get it from “Football for Dummies” or “How to Coach Youth Football” or some other book? I didn’t even play line, for God’s sake… and knew more about the blocking system philosophies just from what I picked up in passing linemen stations at practice on my way to the water station between sessions.
April 25th, 2010 at 3:43 pm
the Saints took who I wanted, Jay Ross and Carter. Could still use Tony Washington. I also wanted Donovan Warren who went to the Ravens. Ciron Black is still available. I wanted DT Charles Alexander too but hes gone.
April 25th, 2010 at 3:47 pm
Coach Elkins says: “What scheme would be best used for Jarcus and the Raiders?”
Best scheme I can think of is a bus ticket to somewhere else.

Let him buy his own damn bus ticket. The Raiders have already given him enough for nothing!

Kellen Heard is a keeper big body NT and seems to be what we need in the middle. I wish we had two of these guys but since he will most probably playing two snaps max, I guess thats ok. I am also happy we Tonga, Moline to battle out for the FB position and see who stays in the team, Daniels and Parsons are in.
Say bye bye to Pears, Joseph, Lawton, Watkins, Holland, Bodiford, Boller, Boyd, Chris Cooper, Figurs, Sam Williams, and Nixon.
Maybe Norris, Ricky Brown, Cooper, Higgins, Reece, and Russell.

Lol.
Well, Lefty I didn’t say that we’d pay for it.
April 25th, 2010 at 3:52 pm
And since Elkins didn’t answer the question, I will:
Based on his blocking on the end-around last year, I say that the best scheme for JaMarcus is the old single-wing where we put in D. McFadden as the QB, M. Bush as the HB and J. Russell will play H-Back. That’s right, I said H-Back (that’s not the same as a halfback, fyi). From that position, he can get out front on runs and can throw the ball about 10 times per game from odd angles. This will allow him to avoid the pass rush and take higher percentage throws… maybe even a few long shots down the field without having to worry about blitzers. We already know that he can handle the contact required of that position from seeing him take countless hits and shake them off, and we’ve seen him get out front and block, so we know he is durable. This is the only system in which I see him having ANY success as a passer unless we get him the ‘07 Patriots offensive line and put a black visor on a helmet that swivels on its own, so that defenders can’t read his eyes and helmet when he stares down receivers.
April 25th, 2010 at 3:55 pm
Also, in the single-wing, the QB rarely throws the ball, so McFadden will basically be a running back taking direct snaps and then having the option to run it himself or pitch the ball based on defensive pursuit. There are designed pass plays, but they are very rare. In such a formation, we could utilize the strengths of our running backs while minimizing the liability of handoffs, our interior line weakness, and confusion by a certain QB. On plays where the ball goes to the H-Back and it is drawn up for him to pass, he will already be out of the pocket and have Bush, the TE, and at least one “pulling” lineman on the flank to keep him clean so he can make the pass.
April 25th, 2010 at 4:00 pm
If anyone else knows of another system in which JR would have a chance to succeed WITHOUT being a liability and hurting the team more than he helps it, I would like to hear about it. A WCO required more accuracy and ability to quickly read coverage than JR possesses. A vertical philosophy needs deep drops that bring out the worst in JR. Double-tight sets mean easier coverage for the defensive secondary, which will lead to more interceptions. Singleback sets just beg the D to play zone, which will lead to more interceptions against an inaccurate QB like JR. I, Power I, and Weak I would be fine, but we would still need a vastly improved offensive line and a fullback who can block VERY well.
April 25th, 2010 at 4:00 pm
This was a pretty coordinated draft-and a good one.
People who think Al had nothing to do with it are crazy.
It looks to me as if Cable is the first head coach since Gruden who knows how to work with Al.
April 25th, 2010 at 4:03 pm
Coach Elkins
Your concept about ZBS scheme is accurate but I disagree with you that the more speed the defensive linemen got, it would decrease the ZBS effectiveness. It really depends on the talent you got, if you got guys like the Jets line, you could easily see that quicker DLs dont crap against them. Its actually vice versa, bigger DLs (who sometimes are slow), give them some problems. But I agree with you the Raiders need to mix it up both schemes to become more effective, little bit of power in the goal line won’t hurt when you got M Bush running not Fargas. I think this team lacked the talent to implement many schemes, now all we need is a good center and maybe veteran RG plus a huge NT to play DT for us and we good to go baring any key injuries to Schillens or Gallery.
April 25th, 2010 at 4:03 pm
Night Guys its way past midnight here so i better go find my bed, take care…
April 25th, 2010 at 4:04 pm
Just to clarify on how the double-tight set makes coverage easier on the secondary:
When the D sees the second TE, they can put an extra man in the box, anticipating run from that formation. If we go play-action, as long as the safety didn’t bite on the fake, he can drop back into coverage, but even if he DID bite, there are still adequate DBs to cover the receivers (we are down one because of the extra TE) and a linebacker can cover any backs who squirt out of the backfield after the fake, either on a delayed circle route or a flat pattern.
April 25th, 2010 at 4:04 pm
Excellent post Steve
April 25th, 2010 at 4:05 pm
If there is no play-action fake, then the previous point is moot: the extra safety in the box just drops back into coverage.
April 25th, 2010 at 4:06 pm
Exactly which post(s) are you referring to, Elkins?
April 25th, 2010 at 4:06 pm
If you put an extra guy in the box…I’ll shift Macfadden to the slot…
Entering into the best formation in football to pass the football….5 wide set with 2 te….both of whom can be check in to block if a blitz does show…..
I can do this all day Steve….

Suddenly a guy runs from the left to the right.
“Where are you going?” the drunk yells out.
“Sorry” the guy says, “I was on the wrong side.”
April 25th, 2010 at 4:06 pm
I think if Cable can now go there and coach these players and start wining the first five weeks, proves to the owner that he is capable of wining some games, he will definitely get an extension. As you all know this his final year in his contract, its a make it or break it year for him as a Headcoach. Not sure any team would sign him with all his package as a wife beater and pimp hand slapper to his coaches. lol

In todays league…you have to run it all….
On the line if possible…
On both sides of the football!
April 25th, 2010 at 4:08 pm
Elkins… there is no such thing as “5 wide with 2 TE.” That would require an empty backfield except for the QB, with only a Center and 2 Guards.
April 25th, 2010 at 4:08 pm
Cable isn’t winning anything this side of a lawsuit!

Z TB Y LT LG C RG RT X Z

April 25th, 2010 at 4:11 pm
Alternatively…I’d line up in this set and shift Mcfadden back to the backfield
April 25th, 2010 at 4:12 pm
You can have a 5 wide set with NO tight ends… or you can have two tight ends, but that usually means a blocking back in the backfield with the HB and the QB. If you go double-tight and then shift the HB out to the slot, you still only end up with three receivers (counting HB in the slot). The TEs can go out in patterns, but they aren’t “wide.” Hence the term “Tight” Ends… they’re close to the formation… tight… not wide. That’s not 5 wide. I would think a coach would know terminology and formations a bit better…
April 25th, 2010 at 4:12 pm
5 WR meaning there are 5 men to enter the pattern…if necessary…TE’s lined up next to the tackles…
5 Pass catchers might have delivered my point more appropriately
April 25th, 2010 at 4:13 pm
Careful Steve…
April 25th, 2010 at 4:13 pm
I heard that we picked up Kellen Heard? does anyone know?
April 25th, 2010 at 4:14 pm
The terminology used to get into formations in the NFL is outdated…
April 25th, 2010 at 4:14 pm
If you go double-tight, empty backfield, you still only have FOUR receivers who are split out (slot, flank, wide, twin). That’s not 5 wide.
To make the point again, Elkins… there is no such thing as 5 wide with two tight ends.
April 25th, 2010 at 4:14 pm

April 25th, 2010 at 4:15 pm

Hey yeah….
where in the world is Tommy Trojan?
April 25th, 2010 at 4:18 pm
And in a double-tight set, even though both tight ends can go into patterns, they aren’t considered receivers because they are lined up next to the tackles at the LoS. That’s why they’re called TIGHT ENDS. They are at the end of the LoS and TIGHT to the formation. If the weren’t within arm’s reach of the Tackle, they would be called SPLIT Ends (WRs).
April 25th, 2010 at 4:19 pm
WRs meaning WIDE receivers… WIDE meaning that they aren’t TIGHT to the formation.
April 25th, 2010 at 4:19 pm
This isn’t NFL terminology… it’s basic football terminology… from EVERY level of play.
April 25th, 2010 at 4:19 pm
Toyz
Yeah we got him. He is mean and can play both position DT and RT. He is the one who took Colt McCoy out of the game!!!!
April 25th, 2010 at 4:20 pm
When I told you I was shifting my TB out of a double tight set I assumed you knew I was entering a formation whereby I can get 5 pass cathcers into the route….
I don’t care what “YOU” call em….there are 5 skill guys…
Personally…I call that set Stud 37 or Stud 73…depending on where I shifft my TB
April 25th, 2010 at 4:20 pm
I never played in the NFL, but I played semi-pro… and the terminology for positions was the same at every level throughout my life. The terminology as far as plays go was different, of course, but PLAYERS and positions… same.
April 25th, 2010 at 4:21 pm
Again…I understand that Steve…it is basic football terminolgy…I use neither!
April 25th, 2010 at 4:22 pm
You guys that don’t like Campbell on on that rock.
You don’t like what Campbell has done….tell me what Gradkowski has accomplished in comparison…..
We have a bonnafide starter who has had success in this league and has completed more passes than not.
You have to be REAALLY negative to hate what the Raiders have done the last 3 days
April 25th, 2010 at 4:23 pm
The NFL uses numbers for their routes…and words for their sets…
I use the opposite
I use numbers for my sets and words for my routes….
Much more effective…
Also allows your defense to call out entire sets and communicate with a visual conception in their head…rather than conventional presnap strength
April 25th, 2010 at 4:23 pm
Elkins,
You may have meant that you would have 5 guys who could run patterns, but that’s not 5 wide. You can have five guys get into patterns from ANY set, so your argument there is stupid. You’re just backpedaling and trying to cover where you screwed up. You called it a 5 wide set with two TEs and it’s not.
To make the point again, you can get 5 guys into routes from ANY set, so your new argument in post #147 doesn’t fly. You were either flat out wrong before… or you simply misspoke… and you refuse to admit it.
April 25th, 2010 at 4:24 pm

JC vs BG….
let the fun begin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
April 25th, 2010 at 4:25 pm
Elkins,
We are not discussing terminology for plays and alignments specific to the NFL. We are discussing the fact that you said you could have a “5 wide with two TE” set. This is impossible. WIDE means that you are not TIGHT to the formation. In order to line up 5 WIDE with double TIGHT, you would be short on linemen.
April 25th, 2010 at 4:26 pm
Elkins,
The whole team can’t be on the same page and speaking the same language when your language is completely WRONG. If you want to say that being able to go into a pattern makes you “Wide,” then the FB is wide, too. You were wrong.
April 25th, 2010 at 4:27 pm
All of this began is response to your post…#122…and out of that set my reply was to shift my TB to the slot….creating a set whereby 5 WR/players or pass catching individuals could get into the secondary….
Sorry u misunderstood steve..

I didn’t misunderstand anything. You are wrong. Even after the Tailback shifts, there are still only three WIDE receivers. The tight ends are TIGHT… they are not WIDE. You can keep trying to rationalize it all that you want, but it doesn’t change the fact that you’re wrong.

When Florida and Cincinnati play in the Sugar Bowl on Friday night, Alex Daniels might be the happiest player in the Louisiana Superdome. Behind the broad smile and the gregarious personality is a 23-year-old senior defensive lineman who has led a life that took him from a college scholarship at Minnesota to sleeping in his car to college football star again. He has lived to tell about it. And in the hopes his story will inspire other young people, he readily tells anyone who’ll listen. “You’ve got to struggle to succeed,” Daniels said. His struggles have led to the success he has enjoying. Daniels was a four-star recruit and ranked the 11th-best athlete in the nation by Rivals.com as a high school senior in 2005. He and two other friends chose to attend Minnesota. He played in all 14 games as a freshman, then in 2006 moved to running back and was the team’s second-leading rusher.
But in 2007, Daniels was dismissed from the team along with three teammates after an incident involving a night of binge drinking and allegations of sexual assault on an 18-year-old woman. Daniels was never charged in the case.
That incident led to consequences that changed his life — for the worse and better. Daniels moved back to his “rough” neighborhood in south Columbus, Ohio. It wasn’t long before he realized he couldn’t give up.
“I grew up overnight,” he said, the only time his booming voice goes soft. “Just imagine a 19-year-old kid being put out on the street and really having to figure out what you want to do in life. I went home for a month and a half. It was the first time I hadn’t been playing football since I was 7. I was gone from the game, and I was really depressed, crying, emotional, didn’t know what I was going to do.”
Through the help of friends, then-Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly was contacted. Daniels was told that if he paid his way through school for one year and stayed clear of trouble, there might be a scholarship for him.
For the next year, he did everything he could to survive and live up to the rules Kelly laid out for him. He took out student loans, began school and worked odd jobs, which included selling cars at a used car dealership.
For a while, when gas hit $4.95 a gallon in Ohio, the drive back and forth between Cincinnati and Columbus wasn’t feasible, so he slept in his car. In the cold. Later, future teammates let the 6-foot-4, 270-pound Daniels crash on an air mattress in their small dorm room.
He struggled. Then he survived.
“It made me more of a leader, more of a person that can step up and take on the challenges,” Daniels said. I think it was the best thing that could happen to me.”
It’s that type of attitude that impresses his teammates.
“He’s persevered through a lot,” cornerback Brad Jones said. “He’s made some bad decisions in the past, but he’s really matured. When I first met him, he was like an immature little boy. But now he takes care of his business both on and off the field. He’s a great guy to be around. And he’s very animated. He isn’t putting on a show; that’s really how he is.”
It was the animated Daniels who became the angry face of the Cincinnati football program after Kelly abruptly announced he was taking the Notre Dame job and would not coach the Bearcats in the bowl game. Since then, he has had time to calm down and said his angry comments reflected the love he feels for Kelly.
“If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t have had a chance to play again,” Daniels said. “So I felt like he was more of a father figure, a role model, somebody that was in my life that was pushing me to be better. And once that happened, I felt like I lost a father because I never had one growing up. And that’s why it hurt me so bad.”
While Cincinnati has had its share of adversity this season, Daniels said the opportunity to play Florida and against quarterback Tim Tebow on a national stage is the dream of a lifetime. He calls this game “my national championship” but insists he’s playing for more than just a victory.
“I want to change the cycle in my family,” he said. “I want to be the one that everybody looks up to in my family. I want them to say, ‘He was the same person that I grew up with, but he made a different decision to be a better person and not let the streets take over his life.’ ”
“Nothing really bothers me anymore,” he added. “After being through what I’ve been through, nothing really bothers me.”

Mike and Monster aren’t the same. Mike is the Middle Linebacker in a 4-3 set. Monster is the same as spy or roving LB in 3-4. It would be the ILB on the Strongside if he was freed from convention and allowed to read and react or align wherever he wanted pre-snap.
April 25th, 2010 at 4:38 pm
what is your purpose in telling me where you played?
April 25th, 2010 at 4:39 pm
You may have heard Mike called Monster in pee-wee by people who didn’t know what Monster was.

It was information that I felt like sharing with the class.
April 25th, 2010 at 4:40 pm
So coach elkin, over your lifetime as a coach, what is your W-L record?
April 25th, 2010 at 4:45 pm
He can’t hear you Thec, he’s busy talking to himself.
April 25th, 2010 at 4:46 pm
Aig,
I get it. the elk-thing is a Josh Mcdaniels-type wannabe trying to pump himself up after f*cking up the entire donkey roster and then giving the reins to Tbone.
He’ll be lucky if he only has a Sewage Disposal Station named for him.
The haterism was obvious and now the identity is clarified.
The pi$$ down our backs and tell us it’s raining rang of infantile futility elk-thing. Time to move into a new mental crevasse. Dismissed!

My purpose here is to share the truth as I know it to be regarding the immediate future of this team….My handle of Coach is implied in all areas of life…and while football in this forum is assumed…I understand its implications..
Thec…my record is unimportant…
April 25th, 2010 at 4:47 pm
Houston, we have a problem

With a move back to DE, the former Texas DT could be part of the solution.

I like Josh McDaniels…gifted young kid and coach
April 25th, 2010 at 4:49 pm
Ya know, from maybe the middle of last season until right up before the draft, there was a pretty strong voice here and elsewhere saying that Cable had to go. “He’s not a real coach … just Al’s yes man … the only one that will take the job …”
Then we have one of the best drafts in some years, Cable gets a ton of credit for it (and rightly so IMO) and those voices are all but vanished.
Times they are a-changin’ . . .
April 25th, 2010 at 4:49 pm
What a pompeous jackass.
April 25th, 2010 at 4:52 pm
Thec…my record is unimportant…
coach elkin, not trying to come at you or anything like that. Your methodology does sound interesting, just wanted to know how effective it was/is.
I am okay with you not sharing your W-L record, but by not answering speak volumes…

The only good thing about the Campbell trade … JaMarcus is out the door.

Great draft. Looking forward to seeing our new weapons and attitude.
April 25th, 2010 at 4:53 pm
Of course you do elk-thing. Of course you do.
4eva,
you clearly identified the caricature of the most ineffectual coach/commandant. LOL.
April 25th, 2010 at 4:53 pm
We’ll see I guess won’t we?
April 25th, 2010 at 4:53 pm
Zymurge,
I have been backing Cable from the start. I wanted an Offensive Coordinator so that there could be more ideas thrown in and the HC’s workload would be lessened. The four passes on our goalline was a horrible decision, yet somehow I can see the rationale behind it… and there were a couple of other series that were questionable, but I definitely didn’t want him fired for it… just wanted more help.
It’s kind of like how I feel regarding Al: I don’t want him to die or retire, I just want some COMPETENT people in the Front Office WITH him to help out and get a better flow of information and ideas going… because Al can’t do it on his own… and has spent the past seven years proving that.

================
To be at the NFL level yes, I agree, but his moves (gutting the offenses pro bowl weapons) and a panicky questionable draft make me think he is wrecking this team instead of giving it the push it needed to get over the hump.
I expect them to be worse than they were last year.
April 25th, 2010 at 4:55 pm
Have a GREAT evening Nation!
April 25th, 2010 at 4:55 pm
Like I had been saying for weeks, This would be the first year we drafted logically, I would post that, and sometimes got ridiculed by it.
April 25th, 2010 at 4:55 pm
Elkins,
I have to agree with my boy Thec: Anyone with a record over .500 would share it. Someone with a record under .500 who feels that there are extenuating circumstances or valid reasons for a losing record would share it. Someone with something to hide or one who feels ashamed of their record would do as you did and say what you said.
April 25th, 2010 at 4:55 pm
I do have a winning record!
April 25th, 2010 at 4:56 pm
Ooooooops….thankx M Lontree!
April 25th, 2010 at 4:56 pm
So then why is Cable our Coach?
Whats his record..in college…below .500 I know
and 9-19 is a joke
April 25th, 2010 at 4:57 pm
Especially with the players on this team
April 25th, 2010 at 4:58 pm
Hey 4Eva!
Take it easy!
April 25th, 2010 at 4:58 pm
I have no problem with a losing record. Hence no problem with sharing it. Extenuating circumstances and all.
April 25th, 2010 at 4:58 pm
Mr. Davis has my resume….so far he feels no need to use it…no worries….I’m a patient man…and the Raiders will not win until then…
April 25th, 2010 at 5:00 pm
Again, I have a winning record…but if I didn’t…it wouldn’t change what I know at all…
April 25th, 2010 at 5:00 pm

Ansewing that your W-L record as “unimportant” is not answering the question, yes you did give me an answer but if the methodology was so great as you propose, It would speak even louder if you had something to back it up with like;
Pop Warner
W-L
High School
W-L
College
W-L
NFL, CFL, UFL, Arena
W-L
Your non answer says that your system may not be that effective…
April 25th, 2010 at 5:02 pm
Elkins,
Regarding post #208: That was my point exactly. I believe Cable’s record is bad because of the situations he inherited, not bad coaching. The record can be BECAUSE OF good/bad coaching or it can be IN SPITE OF good/bad coaching. That fact is why I can’t understand why you would be reluctant to post your record.
April 25th, 2010 at 5:03 pm
Zymurge,
you’re a definitely incise mental creature, so tell me, what precisely would be the reason or reasons that a person would constantly preach negativity into any equation ( a la MR or elk-thing or RRon). Is it some sense of hoping to feel superior to others by instilling hopelessness? Is it a need to feel crass with regards to the view of others? Is it a way of bypassing responsibility by engaging a seeming status quo and then never having to admit to anything?
April 25th, 2010 at 5:03 pm
My non answer doesn’t mean anything you say…your approval is not needed…never will be….
Steve…no, they will not….

This is why I love Richochet. He steps in when he smells BS and exposes it. Elkins stepped in previous thread and just took over it, rambling about how great he is and how he will get in the door, and all about “me, me”. Say this cos he later tries to deflect saying “stop talking about me, im not talking about me.” But if given the chance of taking over a thread, all he wants to focus on is how good he is, etc, which is boring. We wanna talk Raiders, not some crackpots trying to pretend they’re something they’re not or promoting theyre resumes/knowledge to garner attention etc.

Ahh…”Coach” Elkins.
A little info on Elkie.
This poor slapped on sap was one of the favorite punching bags at the Raiders blog on MVN.
Elkie? You stupidly took me on regarding the Raiders, AND ESPECIALLY AL and left whimpering like a little child..
This idiot posted how he was a “top coach” with extensive credentials, that the Raiders “knew all about him” and that was just a matter of time before he got hired as THE HEAD COACH, lol.
Until I got him to admit he NEVER talked to anyone on the Raiders. That no one EVER took his “calls” and how, after getting him to post the area he “coached” in, it turns out he WAS A COACH (I think asst.) ON A HIGH SCHOOL IN SOME TINY TOWN, AND THEN GOT FIRED FROM THAT JOB….
Yeah,….GOT FIRED!!
that’s it, lol.
Oh..and he also cheered the MASSIVE WISDOM OF AL DAVIS IN PICKING JAMARCUS RUSSELL.
And he used the same stupid copouts “Oh, you slapped me down? You insulted me? You took my bait. haha”
Only thing missing? Is this dumbass guaranteeing that he’s going to be the next head coach of the Raiders.
“They should fire Shell and hire me. You watch. They will.”
“They should fire Kiffin and hire me. You watch. They will”
And like here?
When he gets totally slammed down, he’ll DISAPPEAR UNTIL HE THINKS EVREYONE FORGOT HOW INEPT HE WAS..and meekly show back up.
So…uh…Elkie?
Any calls from Al….lately? lol
OH THAT’S RIGHT..you posted something the other day that you “shared something” with Al Davis??
Liar.
Where’s Kush? He used to post on MVN..he remembers Elkies sorryass.

Was Josh McDaniels record prior to him beating Oakland in game 1 last season important when we lost 23-3 at home
April 25th, 2010 at 5:05 pm
Elkins,
They who will not what?
April 25th, 2010 at 5:06 pm
Alford — agree with you all the way around. I’ve been on the Cable bandwagon since day one. It’s clear that he has a different way with Al than others and is able to at least find compromises with him. Now that he seems to have built more credibility with Al, it looks like he’s giving him more of the reigns. This draft was the biggest indication yet. Next, letting him pick his own assistant coaches will be key to him being able to confidently offload some of the duties that he overburdened himself with.
I’m not saying that Cable is by any means a great HC yet. But I’m VERY impressed with what he’s been able to do thus far considering the circumstances. Now that it looks like he has growing control over his destiny, we can really start to judge how good he will be.
Oh, and I take him over Singletary in a heartbeat as an HC based on what I’ve seen from each thus far.

and since I left…is 7-43 over 5 seasons…
Been actively pursuing employment with Mr. Davis for 3 and a half years!

So coach elkins in reality you are a hater….
You hope, and pray this team is unsuccessful so you can say I told ya, and possibly get the head coaching job..Makes sense to me, but “IF” you were that good teams would be knocking on your door, and judging by your W-L record, you wont be hearing knocking aytime soon on a NFL level soon…
April 25th, 2010 at 5:12 pm
Zy,
I wouldn’t rush to judgement, but I’ve liked what I have seen from Cable from the start (except the OL moves last year… that was atrocious and a few questionable playcalls). Anyone doubting his sway with Al is blind… the fact that Al took Cable’s side when Tom cold-cocked Al’s lackey speaks VOLUMES. I would bet even-money right now that Cable will be the Raiders GM a few years down the road.
Al seems to trust Cable’s judgment and has his back. I support that completely. Al has done great things in the world of football, but he needs to put some trust in others and let them run with it. That appears to be the road we’re on now and I like it.
April 25th, 2010 at 5:13 pm
Lonetree — LOL at “incise mental creature”! I’ve been called a lot of things, good and bad, in my time, but that’s one of the funniest in this context
To answer your question, it’s the phenomenon known as the internet behind it all. It’s a new paradigm in freedom of speech where people can psuedo-anonymously be whatever they like in a wide variety of forums. It’s pretty fascinating really to watch how things like trolling have invented themselves. The psychology behind why people post as they do is way beyond me. Each to their own to do whatever floats their boats.
Good or bad, positive or negative, I see it all as a big social experiment that, if anything, is pretty entertaining to watch unfold. And better to have people with their little virtual wars in here than out on the street beating on each other, so from that perspective maybe it’s actually a healthy thing in the grand scheme of things.
April 25th, 2010 at 5:14 pm
Doesn’t the guy Cable cold cocked still have a job?

This is my first chance to post since the draft. I think we did great even though I would have liked more O-linemen.
I can just see Al Davis communication to JaBustus; You know JaMarcus, I’ve told everybody that you were a great talent and to get over it. I’ve thought it over and here’s your new pay schedule. Your a great talent but I got over it. Take the pay cut or haul your schit outta here by tomorrow at 5PM. Oh yeah, don’t bother looking for another team to pick you up. That’s been handled. The only open spot for you is taking Ryan Leaf’s title as the biggest bust ever. So I guess what I’m telling you is to plan on a lot smaller paycheck and a clipboard or you better go get fitted for another Madi Gras robe cause that’s all you got to look forward to. Your history you big dummy. And, it not the type history anybody would want.
Personally, I think JuDummy is too dumb to take the pay cut and remain in the league. Either way, it’s a win-win proposition for the fans.
What’s priest’s take on his hero’s exodus? Somehow I don’t think he saw this coming.
April 25th, 2010 at 5:28 pm
What do you guys think will be our record for this year? Last year, we stumbled to 5-11 with the Jawalrus at the helm. Had we started Grad and Frye, we’d be at 7-9 or 8-8.
With new blood from trades and draft, I think 9-7 is not out of the question. 10-6 would be a stretch but I think 9-7 is more than doable.
I see us doing 4-2 in our div. by splitting with Denver/SD and sweep KC. I see 3 of out 4 from NFC West. That makes 7 and the other 2 will come from Jags/Tenn/ind.
Why Colts? They will rest their starters by week 17.
April 25th, 2010 at 5:35 pm
elk-thing,
you label yourself. there is aught need of other.
regardless of Zymurge’s discourse upon the societal ramifications of the utilization of internet fora, there must be a reason that one such as yourself would don the cloak of holier-than-thou-art-know-it-all in such a miniscule venue (global as it may be) as the RaidersBlog.
smallness of being comes to mind. and yet I do believe that yours is more the plague of self-aggrandizement which beleaguers so very many in this world of non-accomplished souls.
April 25th, 2010 at 5:36 pm
2010 Record entirely depends on Al agreeing to recede into the background; not coaching from his wheelchair, whether we implement some zone coverage; eliminate 7-step drops, let the coaches coach without undermining their authority–you know, being a professionally run organization, etc.
It has to do with Al finally recognizing his weaknesses as a one-time genius whose time has passed him by. Regrettably, I’m convinced he’s the kind of megalomaniac who thinks that he can do it one more time with his philosophy, just to stick it to his critics. I think that’s sad, and therefore would consider an 8-8 season a huge advancement. But there won’t be any more SB wins with Davis running things. No f-ing way.

Anyone else just a tad concerned that Jason Campbell’s best statisitical season happened the year he had his worst won-loss record?
I remember 1997 when Jeff George broke almost all the single season Raiders records for a QB. We also went 4-12.
I am excited to give Campbell a fresh start and see what he can do. Not trying to be negative, but his tenure at Washington has a little bit of a stink to it, IMO.

Whats so ludicrous about my prediction????
We got a weak NFC West and weak AFC West, we can beat Denver*2, KC*2, SD once, win against Rams, Arizona, Seattle, 49ers and get one more win against the Jaqs. Thats 10 wins right there, I dont see any of those teams being better then us. 49ers are good team, I think Alex Smith will get injured this year, their OL needs time to develop and this year unlike previous years, teams will find it hard to run against us. 10 wins is achievable.

Vegas,
What’s to be concerned about? We gave up a 4th round pick in 2012 for the guy. If he can’t play we’ll know soon enough.
He threw for 3600 yards and had a passer rating in the mid 80’s. He was also sacked 49 times. The head coach got fired.
I would say there’s probably a bit more than quarterback play involved in that 4-12 record.
As I said earlier, let’s see him play for our team for awhile before passing judgement on the guy.

YOU OR IDIOTS LIKE YOU SAY THE SAME F IN THING EVERY YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!! JESUS CHRIST!!!! Other teams are improving too, not just the Raiders. The Raiders arent anywhere near good enough to assume a win over ANY team. I mean you guys are like a freakn broken record!!
April 25th, 2010 at 6:31 pm
The o-line hasnt improved.
The RBs are worse and are mediocre AT BEST.
The WRs are below NFL standards.
QB is unsettled.
LBs are weak.
The Raiders will not win 8 games this year. Period.
April 25th, 2010 at 6:34 pm
Ron
You are an idiot. Denver lost their best weapon Marshall and we beat them end of the season. They didnt address key players positions in this draft, they are going into camp without a starting QB, Orton might win it but so could Tebow or Quinn.
Denver regressed so did SD
April 25th, 2010 at 6:36 pm
The Raiders addressed the OL, Campbell and Veldheer are capable players.
The LB is solid with McClain and Wimbley
Our team has improved and we still adding more talents.
Last year, with JR starting we were beating good playoff teams, this year we improved significantly.
What kind of fan r u?
April 25th, 2010 at 6:37 pm
What needs did Denver not address? This should be good.
April 25th, 2010 at 6:39 pm
Campbell and Veldheer are capable?? Says who? I know you never watched a play either of them played.
Wimbley is solid? When? Where?
April 25th, 2010 at 6:40 pm
They lost their best TE,
Dawkins is getting older,
Nose Tackle was a need
April 25th, 2010 at 6:42 pm
Ron,
Denver did not address the need to trade their entire offensive line and defensive backfield to us for a 6th round 2011 pick.
April 25th, 2010 at 6:42 pm
They also needed a MLB since they lost Andre Davis, OL is question mark

Anyone else just a tad concerned that Jason Campbell’s best statisitical season happened the year he had his worst won-loss record
=======================================================
Vegas, come on man!
Gradkowski gave us a spirited couple of games and will make a fine backup…but to question Campbell’s resume, but then, at the sametime through unquestioned support behind Gradkowski’s resume is really unbelievable.
Campbell has had dozens of Gradkowski type games….and that’s when the opponent has thoroughly game planned against him.
Gradkowski’s resume is not even close in comparison. They paid Campbell $3.4M and extended him next year for another $4M+.
Let the competition begin and lets see how it shakes out.
Again, Gradkowski will make a fine backup
April 25th, 2010 at 6:47 pm
Oh well hell, Denver may not win a game all year! LOL!! Dude actually mentioned losing a backup TE as a loss! LOL!!! Then has the balls to say OL is a question mark even though the Raiders line is among the worst in football!! LOL!!
April 25th, 2010 at 6:49 pm
Ryan Clady may be one the best olineman in football… Dungver has many deficiencies but that aint one of ‘em
April 25th, 2010 at 6:50 pm
Interesting stat regarding Jason Campbell. His red zone passer rating last season was 110.9, and he threw for 18 touchdowns with no interceptions. Tied for the NFL lead with Carson Palmer of the Bengals for most red zone TDs without an interception. His red zone completion percentage was 62.1. Raider QBs combined red zone completion percentage: 39.4
Another interesting stat; his completion percentage on throws over 20 yards was the lowest in the NFL. Even more interesting is the fact that Bruce Gradkowski and JaMarcus Russell were 1 and 2 in the NFL in completion percentage over the same distance.
None of those stats tell the whole story obviously, and they can all be interpreted a number of ways, but I thought they were interesting nonetheless.
April 25th, 2010 at 6:50 pm
Oh and they signed Jamaal Williams for your NT argument so…….
April 25th, 2010 at 6:50 pm
RaiderRon,
Wimbley has been considered at least a solid player. When PFT announced that Wimbley has gone to us, a lot of Browns fans commented how he is their only productive guy on the D. I dont follow Wimbley and I will base it on their fans reaction. Plus I would bet that Wimbley is better than Scott/Morrison/Howard.
Denver – Based on the track record of WR’s in general being successful in their first year is VERY low, I will bet that WR Thomas is not going to do anythign special in his first year. If anything, Decker will be a more accomplished WR. They got rid of all their playmakers in Marshal and Sheffler. You dont replace playmakers immeidately in one draft. The probability of that is quite low. Their strength was their D. Yet they got rid of the guy who was responsible for their D. We have split with them the past 3 years with Jawalrus at the helm. I think they will struggle mightily this year. They finished 2-6 last year so in essence they were exposed for who they are.
April 25th, 2010 at 6:51 pm
Jason Campbell’s arrival with the Raiders reminds me of the way Gannon came to town. One can only hope the results and rise of the Gannon era can be replicated by Campbell. If nothing else, Campbell’s arrival was the twig that broke the Jabustus bubble. We are NOT looking at another year of status quo. we will have a top 10 if not 5 defense. We will have much improved performance from the offense. Hoping too, that the coaching & preparation will be better also.
April 25th, 2010 at 6:52 pm
You could give us the pro bowl roster and Al would find a way to screw it up. That’s why I’m not necessarily excited about this year’s decent draft. I give Al props for at least not doing anything stupid. But like I said, he will find a way to screw things up.

Teach,
I think its incredible for some that are challenging Campbell’s credentials but are so ready to sell-out the season with Gradkowski at the helm.
Unbelieveable to me.
Campbell was a starter for 4 years and only traded with a coach change…Gradkowski was trying to get an invite to the St. Louis Rams camp roster last year and was trying out for the 3rd string QB position with the Raiders….I love Gradkowski’s grit and all that…so if he is such a great QB, he should have no problem beating out the much maligned Jason Campbell
April 25th, 2010 at 6:54 pm
SnB,
You and I have agreed on a great many things. I think that behind an improved offensive line, Gradkowski can consistently give us a A- to B- performance. Behind the same line, I see Campbell giving us A+ to C- performances. As someone who has watched every game that Campbell has played in the NFL, I am wary of him. There are lots of negative factors that helped drag him down, but there were times when his reactions to negativity on the field made me question whether I would want him QB’ing my #2 team (Skins) and made me definitely hope that he didn’t end up playing for US. I wanted us to get Troy Smith from Balto (in a package deal with Gaither), but that didn’t happen. I feel that his downside isn’t as risky as Campbell’s, but anything is better than hoping for the best with JR.
The bottom line, though, is that I would rather have consistent performance from Grads than wavering performance from Campbell. Anyone who doesn’t think Campbell is the front-runner for the starting job is insane, though. You don’t give him an extension worth over 4 mil if you don’t think he’s on track to start, barring great play by Grads or a miracle from JR, Boller, or Frye. The race will be between Campbell and Grads. I hope that Grads finds a way to avoid injury and plays as well as possible and we get back to the playoffs and then find a QB of the future… but if Campbell can get us 9 wins, I will be all for him. Realistically, I think we’re at least a 7 win team this year and I won’t be satisfied with less than 9.
April 25th, 2010 at 6:55 pm
Who knows if Campbell is the guy or not. Listen, with last 2 year’s roster and Jawalrus at the helm we were 5-11 both years. How many more wins would we have gotten last year had Grad or Frye started from the beginning?
This year we added more talent and it is universally accepted that we had a good draft. Without Jawalrus, one can reasonably expect even an 8-8 season.
April 25th, 2010 at 6:56 pm
Here we go.
——————————————————-
LMFAO!
I was thinking the same thing.
Rich Gannon, huh?
I sure hope he brings some type of scrambling threat a la Gannon.
April 25th, 2010 at 6:57 pm
Here’s what I call a more realistic season for our team.
*Tennesse L
St Loius W
*Arizona L
*Houston L
San Diego L
San Fran W
Denver W
*Seattle L
KC W
Pitt L
*Miami L
San Diego W
Jacksonville W
Denver L
*Indy L
KC W
I do see us finally beating SD once. Not twice, but only once. And only if our running D is actually improved. We will split with Denver too, but I really think we have a good chance to sweep KC again.
The games with an “*” next to them are games I see as winnable. Again, only if our running D is improved, and only if our passing game makes some strides. Big ifs but not an impossibility. We are probably looking at a 6-10 or 7-9 season. But it could go either way. It really is up to the players and coaches to make this work. There’s a long road ahead.
April 25th, 2010 at 6:58 pm

Jammal Williams is over 36 yrs old and was injured most of it last year. Their TE Scheffler was a starter what the hell you know about football?
April 25th, 2010 at 6:58 pm
Jamaal Williams is damaged goods, and I’d be willing to bet he doesn’t even play the whole season. He missed all but one game last year because of injury, is 33 years old and will be starting his 14th year in the NFL.
If he was still any good the Chargers would have kept him.

Been actively pursuing employment with Mr. Davis for 3 and a half years!

Your ass was canned.
After exposing you, you then came on and said “It was mutual”
You also stated how you won it all almost immediately, which was a lie, and that the whole program fell apart after they fired you, which is also a lie.
The ONLY thing you’ve copped to is you CAN’T GET A JOB ANYWHERE in coaching…at any level.
High schools don’t even want you.
It’s simple. IT’S BECAUSE YOU SUCKED AS A COACH, AND YOU GOT FIRED.
and oh geez…are you back on that idiot “I have my OWN TERMINOLOGY?? Where you dumbed it down so YOU could follow along, which you’re assuming everyone will now change?
lol…no wonder years later your retarded ass is still blathering the same silly take..
April 25th, 2010 at 7:00 pm
There are a couple FAST, SUICIDAL hitting type of LBs from Hawaii. Brashton Satele & Blaze Soares. Able to cover in space and not afraid to be human missles.
Oakland still needs one of those TREE STUMP DTs. For short yardage situations.
Oakland also could use a couple OL who can play C or G.
Anyway, i hope Oakland got that Satele kid. He can hit…
April 25th, 2010 at 7:00 pm
I think that behind an improved offensive line, Gradkowski can consistently give us a A- to B- performance. Behind the same line, I see Campbell giving us A+ to C- performances.
——————————————————-
C- for Campbell as a floor, but only a B- as a floor for Grads?
That’s a pretty bold statement.
I question Gradkowski’s floor of a B- more than anything else.
April 25th, 2010 at 7:00 pm
SteveAlford,
Problem is Gradkowski has never done it before. He’s never been a 60% passer…never done it before…his career stats are awful…everything you think he can do is based on your observation of two football games…of which…only the Steeler game was considered top QB performance.
If Campbell can give us 3500 yds, 20TDS, 64% completion…we win…and he’s done it, your personal observations aside. Gradkowski has the same completion % as JaDavis.
When you project Grads, you are ignoring his injury issues (which matter) and the fact that three other teams didn’t like him for whatever reason.
Let the competition begin. I don’t think Gradkowski stands a chance.
April 25th, 2010 at 7:00 pm

April 25th, 2010 at 7:02 pm
SnB,
Agreed. Jason Campbell is not an elite NFL quarterback and I don’t think he’s in any danger of becoming one, but he’s a heeluva lot better than anybody else on the roster, and it isn’t even close.
April 25th, 2010 at 7:02 pm
Kinda stupid arguing about what Denver has or doesn’t have. We need to make it irrelevant what the competition has. I saw one guy say the AFC WEST is a P Rivers away from us. That cowardly approach is lame as hell. I rather beat SD with Rivers in the game.

Mr. O’Shea,
I did my best to explain to Elkins how he doesn’t know wtf he’s talking about football-wise, both in terminology and in philosophy. The reasons for his firing are self-evident. If you think anyone in the formation who can get into a pattern is referred to as “wide,” then you are clearly not a good coach. I used how many posts… ten or so… to try to get through to him and teach him a thing or two about x’s and o’s and it was all to no avail. I guess some people are just uncoachable.
Have you finally watched “Big Fan” yet?

Both Campbell and Gradkowski are good quarterbacks. Campbell is more durable, and thus more suited to start.
With either one we win eight games this year, I think.

Wish it felt more like Al had his stamp on this draft.
It just seems so Un-Al like.
I know, I know..”If you’re going to blame Al, then he should get the credit.)
This draft was common sense. Seriously, wasn’t any big reaches. Took players, with the exception of a few later round reaches, that filled a need, and that was a solid project.
Again, that’s just not Al, IMO.

not sure if you guys read this but this is pretty funny shcytt from PFT….
Earlier this year, the Chargers traded cornerback Antonio Cromartie to the Jets. The man who has fathered multiple children with multiple women made an appearance at Radio City Music Hall on Saturday, when the league has a hard time keeping the audience amused during the latter rounds of the process.
And so a small but loud pocket of fans amused themselves by greeting Cromartie with this chant: “feed your kids!”

Which means he had his ass handed to him, and feigning dis-interest in the correct terminology is what he does when he says something stupid, and then gets schooled on it, resorting to “Oh, well, you just didn’t understand me” in lieu of the obvious, that he doesn’t understand himself.

SnB,
Why does any questioning of Campbell have to become a Gradkowski-Campbell square off? Clearly Campbell is the most talented QB on the roster, with the most experience, and has been more “successful” using that term very loosely.
I’ve watched Campbell and never been that impressed. The wrap on him is as Nmamdi21 called it perfectly “Jamarcus light”.
Big arm, accuracy issues. Not a big leader. So far, draft disappointment.
A fresh start could be exactly what he needs. He is the starter heading into the clubhouse and at is rightfully so, his job to lose.

=======================================================
Yeah, the Grads guys think he’s better than Campbell but they don’t base it on anything tangable.
Or maybe its 1 half of 1 game that has them believing.
The real issue is that JaDavis was so bad, he made Gradkowski look the Lord and Savior in comparison.
Fortuantely for all of us, a new set of eyes came in here, Hue Jackson, and set everyone straight.
Short of injury, it will be a major upset for Gradkowski to beat out Campbell.
And Campbell, unlike JaDavis, does know how to work and will be walking in and out of that building at the same time Gradkowski is.
I dont think the competition will be close.
Campbell was brought here to get this team over the hump and it is also the classic type of QB the RAiders have succeeded with.
A former starter with some success that needed a fresh start.
Not a journeyman who was in the right place at the right time

April 25th, 2010 at 7:27 pm
The big positive on Campbell? Big down the field, CONSISTANT arm.
I have seen Campbell throw some beautiful deep balls, 60+ yards down the field. Between Jamarcus just fluttering and telegraphing his bombs, and Bruce being limited with the deep ball, Campbells’ 60 yard perfect spirals will be impressive.
I know our WR’s are much happier today.
April 25th, 2010 at 7:27 pm
Ya steve,…brians at their table now,..just sent me another one,..cool stuff.

Here’s a realistic take on Jason Campbell from a local writter, from last season:
“It’s time for the town and the franchise itself to appreciate the 27-year-old, who is a restricted free agent after this season, for what he is — a competent, gritty, middle-of-the-pack quarterback — and not damn him for what he’ll probably never become — a top-shelf star.
There are 12 quarterbacks on the planet who are clearly better than the one the Redskins already have. Their names are Brady, Favre, Brees, Manning, Manning, Rodgers, Rivers, Warner, Roethlisberger, McNabb and, probably, Romo and Schaub, too.
There are also about a dozen other quarterbacks in the NFL who are just about as good as Campbell, give or take a bit. Statistically, they are grouped around his passer rating of 85.3 — quarterbacks like Kyle Orton, Joe Flacco, Carson Palmer and Matt Hasselbeck…”
I agree, Campbell is in the next tier of QB’s below to the top shelf stars, we didn’t have a guy like this and to get him under a reasonable contract and for a 4th round pick in 2012, it’s a steal.
April 25th, 2010 at 7:30 pm
Bob,
If you’re still here, check your inbox… I replied to the pic with my normal email address for you to use instead of the inbox for my chess id.

Bruce Gradkowski = Best backup in the league!!!
April 25th, 2010 at 7:30 pm
Jason Campbell is a perfect 2 year stop gap. Look at the big picture for a moment. There will be a rookie cap and we can get a top QB in the first round of 2012, maybe next year even if we trade back into the first round. Hell Campbell might just be the guy, but there is NO WAY he is worse than Jamarcus Russell.
April 25th, 2010 at 7:30 pm
Good night…
April 25th, 2010 at 7:31 pm
snb we will hear it all season long so just be ready for it. these idiots on tv who criticize the ford pick dont understand that his value to us is that he is a return man which is what we need bad.he is a better wr than given credit for and we arent relying on him for that anyway. i like when people use the term reach when drafting in the mid to late rounds. most of the guys drafted people arent aware of. its more about the position with me unless i know more about the players.
April 25th, 2010 at 7:32 pm
Should Mr. Vehldeer win the starting LT as some speculate, I do believe Mr. Henderson will simply be shifted to RT, where I think he will be much more successful.
Mr. Jason Campbell can scramble when needed, thereby Mario’s sacks will be cut in half, plus I think this will boost his confidence and he will be able to dominate the slower DEs.
We will have a young solid bookends for years to come.
I still see a little Bruce in Bruce (that is Smith in Campbell, if you are following my lead).
April 25th, 2010 at 7:33 pm
Agreed Armond. I think its hilarious that people call a 6th or 7th round pick a reach.
April 25th, 2010 at 7:34 pm
Aig,
I don’t know that it’s possible to be too smart to be a fan of the Raiders… all teams have fans that are intelligent and fans that are stupid. I’ve loved the Raiders since I was a kid and the current struggles and recent bad decisions are no reason to turn on them. It makes me demand improvement, demand that Al gets some smart bastards in the Front Office to help him (and accepts their help and listens to their opinions), demand that Al gives Cable some more authority, and demand that we do whatever needs to be done to get back to relevance and then dominance… but it never could make me stop being a fan of my team.
April 25th, 2010 at 7:38 pm
It will be interesting to see Campbell operate in the same system for 2 or 3 years….you never know.
plus, we scrapped that WCO stuff and now are more of a downfield attack, that will suit Campbell better…allow him to take more chances.
He executed whatever offense they asked him.
All we need is “middle of the road” right now.
Plus, Plunkett and Gannon were “middle of the road” or worse when they came to Oakland.
This is a perfect pick for the RAiders…..
and is better than picking some rookie. The Raiders haven’t developed their own QB from scratch in almost 40 doggone years.
That is a waste of time. We have a former 1st round pick that has shown progression, shown some success on the field and now MIGHT BE ready to take his game to the next level AND has something to prove
Both Campbell and Gradkowski will show up early and stay late….while Frye is in the backroom cutting up film and helping the coaches.
JaDavis will be in Alabama coming in late and sleeping late and eating like a King
April 25th, 2010 at 7:41 pm
Armond,
I know. you know what will be intersting….is when Campbell completes one of his 60% completions to guys like Ford and McFadden in space.
This team is all set…..got competition going into camp and optimism.
I am looking forward to this season and we won’t have to worry about “North Korea Like” media reports about how well things are going. It will be legit.
April 25th, 2010 at 7:44 pm
Steve,
I have been a Raider fan since 1983 and I can always spot a Raider fan vs a Niner Fan. You are the far and few.
btw, have you ever been to Radio City for the draft? I plan on going whenever the wife is ready for a trip to NY.
April 25th, 2010 at 7:44 pm
Besides Rolando McClain, I am most excited to see Bruce Campbell.
I don’t even know if he would be any good. But Tom Cable, for whatever it is worth at this stage, was once considered one of the premier Offensive line coaches. He has never had a freak athlete like Campbell. Coach Cable seems convinced to move him to RG almost immediately it seems, and who knows, it could turn out in spades for us.
April 25th, 2010 at 7:48 pm
Anyone here an espn insider?
If so, I am interested in some draft grades. Post some stuff here about the Raiders if you don’t mind.
April 25th, 2010 at 7:49 pm
snb it will also be interesting to see if we actually open holes in the running game so dmc can get going. im more concerned with short yardage situations that will require us to show some toughness. i hope oneal is ready to go back to his old form before his injury. who knows how good campbell will be but he could turn out to be better than what most think. a little confidence and stability never hurt anyone.
April 25th, 2010 at 7:49 pm

http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-draft/09000d5d817cb0d2/Raiders-draft-recap
I’m tell you all. By getting rid of Jawalrus as our starting QB is an A+ in grading the draft alone. Most analysts forget to mention that we added a legitimate starter in Wimbley for a 3rd pick as well.
April 25th, 2010 at 7:52 pm
Aig,
I’ve never been to the draft and truth be told, never really WANTED to go… it always seemed like there was way too much tedium involved. When I moved to Pacifica a few years back, it felt like I was finally getting to Mecca after 26 years of waiting. Moving back here to Virginia last fall was kind of heartbreaking, but I was in love and came back for a woman, so I dealt with it. I might have to give heavy consideration to going back if my next business venture doesn’t take off (I’m going to open another computer shop in the building next to the tattoo shop… if I can chase out the owner, who has been threatening to retire and close his used car dealership for a few months). I might be living back in Bay Area again… I’m thinking maybe Daly City or Granada… not far from Oakland and S.F., but no hustle and bustle to speak of.
April 25th, 2010 at 7:52 pm
Vegas,
dont be surprised if Uncle Al decides to be a “Genius” by flipping Campbell to DT…..you watch i called this first.
April 25th, 2010 at 7:53 pm
Kirk
Our first true test will be whether our QB can complete passes to the WR without the defenders.
The second test is the annual scrimmage with the Niners in camp.
2 key areas.
April 25th, 2010 at 7:56 pm
getting to jruss for a minute its a damn shame he could let his career come down to this so early. the hell with any of us who supported him but to disgrace his family and friends who all care about him is disgusting. i was all for him trying to come on strong but sometimes u just gotta cut the cord if someone wont cooperate. regardless of what cable says i dont believe u can bring him back even if he does renegotiate now that weve brought in campbell. if they do ask him to and he says no then ill be the first one of his supporters to kiss his azz goodbye. there is no way u can tolerate that kind of arrogance.
April 25th, 2010 at 7:57 pm
Oh, and on the subject of Niner fans… omfg, I HATE those bastards. I couldn’t even go to Tanforan without those bastards starting crap. Daly City and Serramonte weren’t too bad, though… but any time I went to S.F. (always wearing at least a Raiders hat, usually a hoody if it was cold), the effeminate followers of their team would always yell retarded crap… but never when I was walking toward them or facing them… always after I had gone through a door, ya know.
April 25th, 2010 at 7:58 pm
Bruce Campbell & Henderson on the right side are a definate upgrade from Carlisle & the mop handle. Veldheer & Galery on the left side should be very dominating. All we need now is a real center. Any FA centers of worth still out there?
What’s the status of Oren O’Neal? I find myself in a highly positive mindset. Our D should now be a top 10 if not 5 performer and we should have an offense that could be very effective. I’m wondering if they will move Huff to LCB to make space for Mitchell to be in the backfield. We’ve got a solid backfield, a potentially very strong LB group and a D-line that should be able to bring some heat. I like it. We may have just turned the corner.
April 25th, 2010 at 8:00 pm
Aig, we are going to kick azz.
New quarterback, new middle linebacker, improved O and D lines, better return game…
April 25th, 2010 at 8:01 pm
Steve,
My ex-wife family is from Daly City. Man they got tons of Filipinos there and it’s way over crowded. Pacifica and Halfmoon Bay are cool places. When we move back in 2 years, I hope to be in either Halfmoon Bay or Santa Cruz. We’re currently in Memphis.
As to Niner fans, they’ve been bragging about how their team is so much better than ours until I reminded them that we now have a better QB (at least on paper) than them.
April 25th, 2010 at 8:03 pm
Well, I’m sure there are a lot of cool people who are Niner fans, but the vocal ones in the BA are definitely punks. I didn’t want to lump them all together, but you usually characterize an entire group by their loudest members.
April 25th, 2010 at 8:05 pm
I lived near the top of the hill on Grand Avenue back toward Pedro Point in Pacifica. I loved the view, but it stayed a bit chilly all year long there. Nevertheless, it was good times… I really miss it.
April 25th, 2010 at 8:07 pm
Kirk,
When you take a moment to think about it, we’re a completely new team.
Key changes
Jawalrus —-> Campbell/Grad
Howard/Morrison/Scott —->Wimbley, McClain, Scott
Cornell Green —-> Veldheer/Barnes
New Dline —–>Houston/Seymour/Kelly/Matt S.
The WR corp gets more experience.
Plust Hue Jackson is calling the plays vs Cable.
Huge changes man. Huge.

April 25th, 2010 at 8:09 pm

April 25th, 2010 at 8:10 pm
I especially missed the ONE good thing about S.F. … making a daylong visit to the Mechanic’s Institute to play high-level chess with IMs, NMs, and MCs. That was really the only reason to go to that city… maybe Murphy’s was worth it, too… okay, Tommy’s Joynt on Geary and Van Ness was awesome if you were up late and hungry… but other than that, there’s nothing cool there!
April 25th, 2010 at 8:11 pm
I also liked taking Geary all the way to the Asian side of town for some good candy, but I don’t consider that part of the city.
April 25th, 2010 at 8:14 pm

Bad news for Asians in general, though. Steve Alford actually seeks out your parts of town for the food. If you hear some guy rambling on about redundant Raider stuff while trying to sound like he knows everything about race and culture, it’s him. Don’t worry, he’s harmless. And he tips well to absolve himself of guilt for evading taxes.

April 25th, 2010 at 8:28 pm
Kirk and all,
here is a youtube of Jason Campbell….my observations.
1. He can hit the open man as compared to the greatness of Jawalrus. At this point, I dont care about threading the needle. Just hit the open guy. Checked.
2. He has a strong arm. This is better than Grad.
3. His TD vs int is extremely good for a young QB on a struggling team. So we know he aint no int machine.
4. We dont know about the most important part between the two ears. But I hear that he has high football IQ.
5. I do hate his throwing motion. If you notice from his college highlight and this highlight below, he drops the ball down low during his windup. that is similar to (but not as bad as) Tebow.

man…reading this chytt gives me that weird vibe…something tells me that at some point Tebow will come out as Gay, maybe later in life. I have seen this type of gay people before. Some of the best dressed, well groomed and physically fit guys I have known in my work environment have been gay. There is nothing wrong with being gay but I’m just saying that Tebow is that type of guy to me. People who are so one sided is usually trying to hide the other side.
from pft….
Tebow, McDaniels made instant connection
Posted by Mike Florio on April 25, 2010 11:04 PM ET
When the Broncos traded from the fringes of the top ten into the twenties on Thursday night, Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times turned around and said they’re trying to get Tebow. And though the Broncos ultimately traded back into round one to get him after grabbing receiver Demaryius Thomas with the 22nd overall pick, the Broncos made it happen.
As Lindsay Jones of the Denver Post points out, the eventual marriage was sparked by a 15-minute session at the Scouting Combine, when Tebow met with coach Josh McDaniels and other members of the Broncos’ contingent.
“I was jacked leaving that room,” Tebow said. “I didn’t even want to visit another room. It was not enough time. We were excited, we were enthusiastic. There was passion. It was just intense, and it was ball, and it was juice. The juice level in that room was high, and it was awesome.”
McDaniels agreed. “We left [the Combine] saying, ‘Boy, that’s pretty unique, what he has and his passion for this game and for winning.’ He’s been a winner, and you could see why.”
Tebow has a plan for winning the affection of the rest of the organization. “I’m going to have one goal and that goal is to earn the respect of my teammates and coaches,” Tebow said. “That’s the only goal I have. It’s not to be the starting quarterback right now, it is to earn their respect, because when you earn respect from people, then they begin to like you, and then they believe in you, and then they begin to love you, and then you have a team that is united and cares about each other more than anything else.
“Then you go out there and you play for each other, you play for your coaches and you win championships.”
Whether the last part happens remains to be seen. But we’re not ready to bet against the Broncos, or against Tebow.

I don’t think Tebow will be that great of a QB, but I would have rathered seen him go outside of the division.
Same with Ryan Matthews, Eric Berry and Javier Arenas.
I like having a new beast of a MLB though. No Jamarcus and a physical D? You saw Cable’s shirt Thursday night. This guy is “geeked”, looks ten years younger and seems ready to roll.
Tom Cable 2010 COY candidate.

April 25th, 2010 at 9:11 pm
I like the signings of Tonga, Guy and Parsons!
I wouldn’t be surprised if Tonga winds up being the starting FB. He is a beast and can move the chains, score TD’s and can catch the football!
April 25th, 2010 at 9:13 pm
cable better have a winning season or it will be his last
April 25th, 2010 at 9:13 pm
The Raiders ARE winning 8 games, you can book that.
And if the Raiders go 8-8, and it’s not one of those start 7-3 and finish 1-5, Cable will probably get 3rd or 4th in COY votes.
9-7 we could win it, and if we go 10-6 he would be a lock for it.
A little wishful thinking, but Cable’s really in a pretty good place to get a lot of the credit if the Raiders do well.
And I think we will.
April 25th, 2010 at 9:15 pm
Got ya for 8 games, Vegas. I’m going with 5. We’ll see. Wishful thinking…hmm. I don’t think the books have a clause for that. Either you’re making the bet, or not. Starting to face reality?

April 25th, 2010 at 9:17 pm
Vegas,
I would put money on 7-9 or better. I believe that we are AT LEAST a 7-9 team right now… but I won’t be satisfied this season with just .500.
April 25th, 2010 at 9:17 pm
That means I want more than 8-8.
April 25th, 2010 at 9:17 pm
Put me down for 8 wins. The casino’s originally had us at 5.5 as the line.
Curious to see if Campbell, no Jamarcus and a little draft love bumps up the number.
April 25th, 2010 at 9:18 pm
Just making sure that none of you were stupid enough to think that I meant that 7-9 was .500. The two statements were completely unrelated. We are at least a 7-9 team. I won’t be satisfied if we only get 8-8, though.

Jamarcus is toast. Al MIGHT let him go through the motions in trainig camp, but I set the over/under on days until he is released at 17.
A couple of weeks to see if he wakes up. If not, the chosen one will be gone.
April 25th, 2010 at 9:24 pm
Mel Kipers a douche. He thinks hes the formost expert on the draft because hes the only one he literally made a career out of it. He gave us a grade of a C+. Watching espn the only real negative thing i ever heard him say was that we really reached for McClain. From what i hear jacksonville was ready to take him at 11. So i dont know what he expect us to do trade back a couple spots or something. Maybe he wanted us to take campbell or whoever he mocked us to take. Ive never liked the guy always valued his input much less than anyone elses.
April 25th, 2010 at 9:24 pm
The Raiders are going to play a tough game in week one, then choke at the end. That’s when Al will start tinkering and when the downward spiral will begin. 5-11.
April 25th, 2010 at 9:26 pm
Who do the Raiders play week one? Tennessee? Guarantee you the Raiders play a heck of a game, using a balanced offense. They’ll lose at the end, though, probably via an unnecessary prevent defense. Then, the following week, we’ll start seeing the forced 10 yard passes again.
April 25th, 2010 at 9:28 pm
Week 2 we are going to beat the crap out of Bradford and the Rams.
Should be a snoozer and easy victory for us.
Go out on a limb and say the Raiders will be 7 point favorites for that game.

April 25th, 2010 at 9:32 pm
AIG, according to Al’s words in his press conference when firing Kiffin, what did he say to Kiffin when Kiffin tried to talk him out of JaMarcus?
April 25th, 2010 at 9:33 pm
The essence of the Jamarcus Russell era.
He is a financial risk to allow to practice. Classic!!
April 25th, 2010 at 9:34 pm
You know, I actually wouldn’t be surprised if Russell stayed, and still started. I could see Al bringing in Campbell to please Cable, yet still making him start Russell anyway. As far as the money goes? Anyone need to be reminded what Al shelled out for those bums in ‘08?

RMR,
Ryan was the king of unnecessary prevent defense… so the chances of that are significantly lower now. Hopefully we’ve seen the end of that foolishness. Hopefully Marshall will get us a big run-stuffing DT and put together a great D. For the first time in years, I can hope and actually feel justified in it.

April 25th, 2010 at 10:27 pm
We need to be really active in the Rookie FA market. Let’s bring in a ton of the class of 2010 Offensive linemen and see if we can find a couple of gems.
April 25th, 2010 at 10:33 pm
I understood most of the Raider picks but I am still questioning the #4 pick – the LB. Off hand, I’d say we could have done a lot better by picking an OG to fill a need. Mitch Petrus-OG was available and we passed on him to get a who’s he LB. I thought we had more than enough LB on the roster already. NY Giants got Petrus. He will end up being a real powerhouse lineman – our loss.
April 25th, 2010 at 10:36 pm
The who linebacker is a special teams guy, same with the last two picks. We could have had Jeff Owens who is stout vs the run, a NT, and OG Brandon Carter or Ciron Black. Ciron Black is actually available in FA though atm.
April 25th, 2010 at 10:41 pm
Good to know about the LB. I hope he was worth the 4th pick. I know ST are important but I thought our ST personnel were more than adequate. The ST problem was the coach IMO. Well, we got him so I hope he works out.
Like I said on an earlier post, we should be very aggressive in the rookie FA market when it comes to linemen – both on the O and the D.
April 25th, 2010 at 10:48 pm
Al probably thinks we have our NT in this Heard guy, heck, maybe he will be a steal, you never know.
April 25th, 2010 at 10:52 pm
Heard guy? I’m unfamiliar with this person. Who & where does he fit in?
April 25th, 2010 at 10:55 pm
“03/16/2010 – PRO DAY RESULTS: Among the 14 players that worked out for the 26 team representatives in attendance (including coaches from Carolina and Cincinnati), the following were the most noteworthy: DE Alex Daniels (6-2 1/4, 265) ran 4.73 in the 40, had a 36 1/2-inch vertical jump, a 10-9 broad jump, a 4.51 short shuttle, a 7.09 three-cone drill and did 31 bench press repetitions at 225 pounds.” – Gil Brandt, NFL.com
Alex Daniels looks like he could be a player, strong, fast and good heart…was one of the top UDFA. Shorter O’Shaunessy.
April 25th, 2010 at 11:01 pm
Has everyone noticed how large these players are getting nowadays. Linemen are 6′4″ and 310# minimum – more likely 325. We are now a true land of giants where anyone less than 6′3 can legitimately be called shorty. The linemen heros of yesteryear (e.g. Shell, Upshaw, Otto, et al.) wouldn’t even makes today’s rosters as linemen. They were to small and slow to compete with today’s behemoths.
April 25th, 2010 at 11:02 pm
There is like no info about him and there is a video on youtube of him hitting Colt Mccoy. Look at the link Jerry put we picked him up. He is tall and like 350 pounds. DT/NT/RT guy.
April 25th, 2010 at 11:04 pm
The Bucs picked up QB Jevan Snead as a UDFA.
He was the second highest rated QB behind Bradford going into last season. He could be very good if he gets back to his old form.
Snead should definitely fire his agent or whoever told him to declare for the draft.
April 25th, 2010 at 11:05 pm
Post 492
Lol its just Shaughnessy not O’shaunessy I think. I think we are good enough at DE and we are stacked at LB. We should be focusing on getting a big body DT, a center, and a guard. Those should be our main priorities going into next year. If Bush or McFadden don’t produce this year, that needs to be addressed too, along with WR if they fail to produce.
April 25th, 2010 at 11:09 pm
campbells and veldheers ceiling are extremely high, from the soundz of it cable sees campbell as a guard and veldheer as a rt. with campbells size speed and strength cud you imagine the holes he’d open up 4 dmac?
April 25th, 2010 at 11:20 pm
Northern,
Yup. I follow Ole Miss down here. After last season, mcShay rated Snead as the number one QB propect this season. McShay also goof on Andre Woodson from Kentucky too a few yrs ago too. Snead is an int machine. He should have stayed for one more year. Another Ole Miss guy Greg Hardy was a legit top 15 last year but he came out this year and he went in the 6th round.
The best part is Jonathan Crompton from Tenn got drafted earlier by San Diego. Crompton is considered the worst QB ever in the modern history of the Volunteers.
April 25th, 2010 at 11:21 pm
I’m not sold on DMac as a full time back. He more along the lines of Reggie Bush and should be utilized the same. DMac is simply not very god between the tackles. He goes down too easy at first contact. We need to get him the ball in the open either by swing pass or lining him up at the slot receiver spot going up against LB’s & safeties. There, he can do some good things and now that we have a QB in camp that can hit an open receiver we may have something. Leave the between the tackle stuff to Bush & Gary Russell. Hopefully, we get a healthy Oren O’Neal back this year. That would be a big plus for the running game – along with the new O-line.
April 25th, 2010 at 11:22 pm
Mr.
Drafting Jawalrus will go down as the worst decision draft day decision of Al’s legacy. However, the worst money Al ever spent was on Javon Walker for $1 mil per catch.

2000, MNF, at Denver. Gannon hits brown for a go ahead TD, a hard fought game. Denver only needs a FG to win. We go to the prevent and they march right down field. 10 years ago. Where was Rob then? In New England, if I recall. Certainly not Oakland.

Veldheer and Campbell obviously had strong off season showings and hopefully can be coached up.
He seems to struggle engaging defenders not sure how to attack or where to place his hands for best leverage.
All things that can be taught and if he’s a quick study he could help in certain packages sooner rather than later perhaps.
Campbell showed even at the combine he could apply readily what was taught.
Beside experience I think motor has been a question for too.

April 26th, 2010 at 6:33 am
ESPN this morning they said Russell may be cut as soon as this week. They said Oakland has made the commitment by signing Campbell to a two year deal.
The Analyst was quick to say,”lets face it at this point in his pro career he is out of shape and can’t even look off a corner. The corner has just as much chance to the ball as the WR does. “Ouch, but true.
April 26th, 2010 at 6:35 am

April 26th, 2010 at 6:39 am
Ha, Ha, Ha, !!!! Now ESPN Mike and Mike is swinging on the nut draft!
But they are killing Russell even though they say he is a very likeable kid but he could not get the job done. He will be one of the great busts of the NFL draft, maybe. They say he just could not take pressure of the situation he was in.
Who knows maybe Russell will go somewhere as a 3rd string QB and work on his game.

I did want to see what Russel looked like behind a o-line and with a “decent” running game.
If he would have worked out harder I would have been more on his team. I am not big on Grads and Frye neither. Grads is a back up QB and Frye is a thrid round QB for life. I watched him in Cleveland and I hated his game with a passion.

My take:
MLB Rolando McClain: Good pick, production at the highest level to match height, weight & speed numbers, hard working and smart, with the instincts required to QB this defense.
DL Lamarr Houston: Versatile, 3 down player who won’t take plays off and can give us snaps everywhere on the line, another solid kid who combines production with outstanding athleticism.
OL Jared Veldheer: They say he’s got everything you need to develop into a LT, smart, huge and athletic, short arms but as Peter King pointed out, some of the best young OT in the league have less than “ideal” arm lenght and they do fine, can’t say I know much more but seems like a fine, not great pick for me.
OL Bruce Campbell: It’s all been said, a great pick at this point, run blocking is the most underrated part of his game which makes him a starting candidate at the right side.
WR Jacoby Ford: besides the obvious return potential, this kid is actually a very good WR prospect, he can score from anywhere on the field and we need guys like this, could turn out to be a Santana Moss type of weapon.
CB Walter McFadden: I like this guy, a true CB with cover skills and speed who should help really soon, not the perfect CB prospect because he’s not real big or strong but seems like the kind of DB who makes plays for you.
MLB Travis Goethel: “Marginally athletic prospect with terrific instincts. ..Goethel is a thinking man’s football player with a terrific head on his shoulders…”.
The scouting report says it all, back in 94 we drafted a similar player in Greg Biekert, he turned out to be our starting MLB for years and a real solid pro, you never know.
The DB’s: Special teams help.
FB Manase Tonga: A draftable player at a position of need who slipped, good pick up.
G Alex Parsons: Nice pick up, used to be a DL, only started the last 2 years at G: “Parsons is one of the more underrated offensive line prospects in this draft and a player with a good degree of upside potential. He’s assimilated into his new position well, and he will only get better in the coming years as he sees more playing action.”

Bigest loss for the RAIDERS so far is big #52. This guy will be missed. I know McClain looks like a great replacment, and I think and hope he is, BUT Morrisson was more than just the MLB. Kinda like T. Brown in a way. A true RAIDER! If we would have had better NT, and DT, we would not have had to “up-grade” our MLB, then we could have used the #8 to trade down to pick Pouncy, and Iupati!

Chane Moline – UCLA
At 6′ – 247, he is quite a load to bring down and he ran a 4.58 40 (good receiver out of the backfield)
I know why you like him BSJ!
“He also handled the ball 227 times with only 2 fumbles, and those were both in 2006-07.”
quick question: does this guy have any BLOCKING SKILLS?
could care less about a FB’s ability to run with the football or catch dumpoffs.

Very pleased with the draft. I had Veldheer and Goethel on my mocks for weeks and getting Campbell in the 4th was the steal of the weekend.

Anyone as intelligent as he is cannot become used to losing, they merely tolerate it until they get a chance to leave town or until things change. Nnamdi’s predictive capabilities may have already told him that you would say that, leading him to launch retribution already… tread softly, bro.
How you doin today?
April 26th, 2010 at 8:28 am
JLH keeps a spot before Watkins and Holland because he has ST value.
April 26th, 2010 at 8:28 am
well fellas, If we’re going to use a 3-4 defense on occassion … who will play NT?
William Joseph? LOL!
If Albert Haynesworth & Marcus Stroud can’t do it, i’ll go ahead and cross Dick Seymour off the list too.
April 26th, 2010 at 8:30 am
RR-look, I understand he was pretty good in 2008, in fact he was actually fun to watch. I watched every single game last year and truth be told after game 1- he sucked. Yes he had a few catches toward the end of the year, but wouldn’t you rather have a guy on your roster who is just as good of a reciver but can also return kicks, in a non-scard fashion? Like say Jacoby or perhaps N.Miller? There is only so many roster spots for wideouts. Let’s not forget most of us are still hoping for the Raiders to sign a veteran wideout. I believe in your case you want Mushin. I think you get the point that between Chaz, Murphy, DHB and a couple rookies there will be no room for the sideways punt returner.
April 26th, 2010 at 8:30 am
I just hope JLH snaps out of his funk. He was one of our only real weapons in 2008.
April 26th, 2010 at 8:31 am
I would rather have gotten Troy Smith than Jason Campbell, would liked to have gotten Gaither and wanted a big, run-stuffing DT (either through the draft or trade for Haynesworth), but otherwise, I don’t have any complaints. The draft itself went fairly well (except for picking up Tonga instead of drafting John Conner in the fifth). You know what… I actually have too many random thoughts at the moment… just woke up… I’ll make a more coherent post when my mind gets itself centered. All in all, it was a good draft.
April 26th, 2010 at 8:32 am
JLH got wacked in week 1 or 2 and never was the same. JaMeatloaf hung him out to dry like he did to everybody. He should bounce back and be fine but he has to show something BIG in pre-season he doesn’t have a free pass.
April 26th, 2010 at 8:34 am
Cant wait to see what Ford has under the hood! Would be nice if JLH hung on that would give us 2 return guys, nice!

Jason Campbell = new starting QB
Veldeer, Campbell & Parsons = OL help
Ford = return man
Tonga & Moline = new starting FB (may the best man win)

I want to be excited about McClain, but I’m gonna wait and see if we actually add a run stopper to the D-Line before making any assumptions regarding an improved run defense.

7 seasons and counting … I’m sure he’s “used to it” by now

I think we can all agree Nnamdi is in a class all by himself, skills & intelligence etc; please do not lump him in with guys like Sam Williams
April 26th, 2010 at 8:37 am
Am I the only one who thinks Nnamdi is the only Raider other than Charles Woodson that has deserved to wear #24? Should we force Huff to give it to him… maybe by order of Willie himself? I might just be too used to seeing Nnamdi in #21 by now, though…
April 26th, 2010 at 8:39 am
If Huff continues to show the improvement that he showed last year, I say we let him keep #24 as a show of pride in him and faith that he will get to a pro-bowl level of play.

he didn’t prove to be a capable receiver or return man in actual games.

Steve, I’ll admit I wanted Haynesworth too. I then realized that it would kind of be going in the opposite direction of what the team seems to be trying to do. I am of no disallusion of Haynesworths talent but, I don’t think we need a guy to start pouting if things arent going his way. Yes I want a Big run stuffing NT now, but the realty is we probaly aren’t going to get every single piece of the puzzle this year. would anybody want Russell in the open QB competition if he did agree to a massive paycut?
say $4 million instead of $9.5 million
($3 million is guaranteed anyway)
I’d be fine with that. It’s not like Frye or Boller have what it takes to lead us to the playoffs either!
haha – Having said that, Jason Campbell is in a different league than all 4 of these other guys
April 26th, 2010 at 8:49 am
Source: JaMarcus Russell is up to 300 pounds
A league source with knowledge of the situation in Oakland says JaMarcus Russell has beefed up to 300 pounds according to Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post.
We’re also told that the former LSU star isn’t getting good advice from his family.
“It’s a drag on the kid and they encourage his poor lifestyle,” an NFL source told the National Football Post.
With Russell’s big contract, lack of conditioning, the acquisition of Jason Campbell and the presence of Kyle Boller and Bruce Gradkowski, the handwriting is carved into the wall on this one.

Yes, we may not know for sure what Nick Miller can do, But I think we know for sure what Higgins can’t. That is why I used the word upside. I will not pretend like I have any more info than you do. I just use the reasoning of what I watch with my eyes as well as the belief that the coaching staff apperently had in N. Miller to keep him on the roster all year with hopes of him playing as opposed to putting him on injured reserve where he belonged. Seems like a lot of faith to put in someone when you are wasting a valuable roster spot IMO. As you said they will all probaly be gone, I would just like to get a look at what could be there in N.Miller. We can blame Russell for Higgins demise. It’s unfortunate because I did like him. BTW Justin Miller was a good return man but the fact he sucked at being a backup CB led to him being out of the leauge (moreso than his injury)

I take back all the thoughts that I’ve had about you being a waste of space here… the name that was on the tip of my tongue was Allen Faneca. Thank you. We need to sign him and Mawae NOW! Then we have to either sign Henderson or trade for Haynesworth. If we make those three moves, we are in the playoffs this year, of that I have no doubt. If we DON’T do those things, we are 6-10, 7-9, or 8-8… all with no playoffs til 2011.

Now that the Oakland Raiders have moved forward by trading for quarterback Jason Campbell(notes), they’re poised to move on from bust JaMarcus Russell(notes).
Russell is expected to be cut as soon as this week.
The Raiders already have backup candidates in Kyle Boller and Bruce Gradkowski(notes), and Russell’s salary of $6.45 million and history of poor play can’t be ignored any longer.
Russell has struggled with weight issues, reportedly weighing as much as 290 pounds in March
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the Raiders have extended Campbell’s deal through 2011. If the Raiders have Russell on the team this year, it would cost them $6.45 million.
“I talked to Mr. Davis, and he wanted me for two years,” Campbell said. “He wants me to help their team to a new level.”
Russell, the former top overall pick out of LSU, has thrown 18 touchdowns with 23 interceptions and lost 15 fumbles. He has completed only 52 percent of his throws, way too low a percentage for a starting quarterback.
It’s unclear what team will want to give Russell another chance once he’s cut loose. His leadership and work ethic and his play are all suspect.
