Russell not the only Raider on notice
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, April 26th, 2010 at 9:03 am in Oakland Raiders.
As the Raiders gather for their mandatory minicamp this weekend, JaMarcus Russell isn’t the only player whose job security will be tenuous.
Whether Russell will actually be there, as coach Tom Cable said he would, is open to question. The last thing the Raiders need is an injury which would delay the process of sending him on his way in the wake of the acquisition of Washington quarterback Jason Campbell.
Campbell is already in the area, and was spotted at a Jack London Square restaurant with offensive coordinator Hue Jackson by a reader with a who sent a photo. Russell, meanwhile has been kept out of public view.
Willie Brown’s glowing review of Russell on Comcast last month aside, you talk to a few Raiders employees informally and it’s more of a collective roll of the eyes.
(Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post reported Russell is tipping the scales at 300 pounds).
The Raiders could pull the band-aid off the wound and dispense with Russell quickly unless they’re looking for a way of getting out of paying that last $3 million.
Either way, Russell can’t feel real confident about his status, and only he knows if he cares or wants to try again somewhere else.
If Russell isn’t at minicamp, then Campbell, Charlie Frye and Kyle Boller will get all the work as Bruce Gradkowski recovers from a pectoral tear. (The good news on Gradkowski’s injury is that it was to the left side, and not his throwing side).
A handful of other players, who make far less money, are also less comfortable as the 2010 Raiders begin to take shape.
Among them:
WR Johnnie Lee Higgins: Coach Tom Cable was clear in his intentions for fourth-round pick Jacoby Ford. It’s also a safe bet Nick Miller, if injured during training camp, won’t be kept on the 53-man roster for 16 weeks this time around.
“I’m looking for that guy to see if he’ll take the reins of our return game and become a guy like that for us. Those are the expectations early on,” Cable said.
Any linebacker not named Rolando McClain, Kamerion Wimbley or Trevor Scott: Cable promises I’ll love how the defensive plan shakes out. If it includes attackers coming from different directions, sometimes as an end, sometimes as a linebacker, and an element of unpredictability, he’s right.
Quintin Groves, a former second-round pick, joins holdovers Thomas Howard, Ricky Brown, Isaiah Ekejiuba, Sam Williams and second-year men Slade Norris and David Nixon. Add sixth-round pick Travis Goethel, who Cable described as being a stout inside player. It’s survival of the fittest (and fastest) with a heavy emphasis on special teams.
Any offensive tackle not named Mario Henderson: Khalif Barnes will probably stick around, but nothing is certain after the picks of Jared Veldheer and Bruce Campbell in the third and fourth rounds. If Campbell ends up as a guard _ Cable said it was a possibility _ it opens up another spot.
Fullback Oren O’Neal: Could be just an oversight, but Cable has now left O’Neal’s name out the last two times he was asked about the fullback position. It’s a good situation for Manase Tonga, the undrafted free agent from BYU and Aragon High in San Mateo, to show if he can be an NFL quality blocker. There are unconfirmed reports the Raiders also signed UCLA fullback Chase Moline, who began his Bruins career as a linebacker.
With undrafted free agents, it’s a difficult to project. A year ago, I received a flood of e-mails and assurances that linebacker Frantz Joseph was a tackling machine and a real find at linebacker. Instead, Joseph looked a step or three slow from the outset and the gem turned out to be Harvard defensive end Desmond Bryant.
With O’Neal’s healthy and Luke Lawton starting the season under suspension, Oakland’s 2010 fullback position is wide open.
Defensive end Jay Richardson: Richardson is a point-of-attack player on a team that hasn’t been a good run-defending team for seven years. The plan for Lemarr Houston, Cable said, is to play end.

Source: JaMarcus Russell is up to 300 pounds
A league source with knowledge of the situation in Oakland says JaMarcus Russell has beefed up to 300 pounds according to Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post.
We’re also told that the former LSU star isn’t getting good advice from his family.
“It’s a drag on the kid and they encourage his poor lifestyle,” an NFL source told the National Football Post.
With Russell’s big contract, lack of conditioning, the acquisition of Jason Campbell and the presence of Kyle Boller and Bruce Gradkowski, the handwriting is carved into the wall on this one.

Q: If Houston is an end, won’t you be a little light at tackle still?
Cable: No. You’ll see the plan when we get there. It’s good. You’ll like it . . . It’s good. But we have some things we’re putting together to get it all sorted out, but you’ll see it in mini-camp.

Mistabr0wn,
Bob posted it here, Brian took the pic… and it was great. Hue and Jason were just sittin there chillin, could have been discussing anything, but the key is that they were together and talking. I wonder if JaMarcus has even troubled himself to MEET Hue yet?
April 26th, 2010 at 9:13 am
If JR knew that meeting Hue would involve getting a meal, he would have been out on a flight to meet him the day he was hired!
April 26th, 2010 at 9:13 am
I think Richardson is safe.
I doubt he gets beat out by Alex Daniels or Greyson Gunheim!
We need one more DT. Seymour, Kelly & Bryant is fine
but Joseph & Cooper need to go!
April 26th, 2010 at 9:14 am
what up nation, good day to be a Raider fan. I think J-Bust has seen his last game in the NFL. I love the UDFA pick-ups this year. Rounds 4-7 of the draft were clearly where Al was lucid and decided to force his will, but its all good, as we are very light at CB and special teams.
It sounds like the whole defensive front-seven is on notice, if they are shaking up the system, some players may not fit the mold any longer. I sense a D-line that will be large and active all the way across.
Seymour/Houston at DE; Bryant, Kelly, Warren and hopefully this Kellen Heard kid at DT.
The LB corps is gonna be much bigger than before, with Scott and Wimbley starting on the outside, and McClain on the inside. It sounds like Goethel, Satele, Brown and maybe Howard will compete for the other ILB spot in our 3-4 looks.
April 26th, 2010 at 9:14 am
—”The Bucs will reportedly release FB B.J. Askew on Monday. A flurry of post-draft cuts will happen throughout the league. Askew is expendable with Earnest Graham and Chris Pressley capable of lead blocking for Cadillac Williams and Derrick Ward. Graham is the favorite to start at fullback”—
He is our new FB!
April 26th, 2010 at 9:14 am
who is Kellen Heard ?
April 26th, 2010 at 9:14 am
Norco was saying Br!en was the one with the photo I believe.
The semi-pro’s hard at work!!!
I don’t even think Jamarcus will be there this weekend. This will be a whole new team with that cloud removed from the team.
April 26th, 2010 at 9:16 am
Marshall has concocted a new defensive scheme that’s gonna take the league by surprise similar to what Denvers offense did for much of the season last year, ours will have sticking power because Seymour can take on the double team better than Warren did last year and Houston is a run stopping machine. Watch out for punishing hits from Branch, Mcclain, and Mitchell. Our D is gonna be straight NASTY!
April 26th, 2010 at 9:16 am
Russell, meanwhile has been kept out of public view.
—————————
Err, so being caught will eating dinner is being put into the public view? Geeze Jerry, that is some ‘interpretation’ of the situation you got going there.
If you are going to try to put in your own news, just come out and say it directly, don’t try to add in your personal spin. If you don’t like that the Raiders don’t care about reporters or perhaps even you in particular, just say you don’t like it, don’t turn all Kiffin on us with the innuendo and half truths.
(I do appreciate the transcripts and links to other stories so keep up the good work there and thanks for the daily reports!)
Oh, by the way. BAN THE TROLLS!
April 26th, 2010 at 9:16 am
Vegas, the last thing the Locos need is JaMarcus! LOL!
April 26th, 2010 at 9:17 am
Johnnie Lee Higgins will ultimately be remembered as collateral damage in the JaMarcus Russell disaster. After looking lost in 2007, he had a very encouraging 2008 and looked to be developing. He was having a decent week 1 against San Diego last season when, as we know, Eric Weddle blew him up when Russell hung JLH out to dry. He was a disaster the rest of the year. Unless he got over it, which I don’t see, I think he’ll be a final camp cutdown. It’s a shame, but what can you do.
April 26th, 2010 at 9:17 am
Kellen Heard is a very talented player who played on both sides of the ball for Memphis last year. He was a project on the O-Line and a very talented DT that plays with a mean streak. (SOB will love this guy)
At 6-6, 355, he is quite a load on either side of the ball who is best known for being a tough defender who hit Colt McCoy late in 2006.

April 26th, 2010 at 9:18 am
Jerry’s right in saying it’s difficult to assess UDFAs, but I have to think Manase Tonga will easily be the gem of this crop. He’s what we haven’t had since Jon Ritchie: a big, bruising nasty MFer who loves to hit people. I think his receiving ability on screens is underrated too.
April 26th, 2010 at 9:18 am
Vegas,
Bob sent me that pic… and it actually made me like Jason Campbell just a little bit. Maybe my sh-itbrown-colored Redskins losing glasses have made me too harsh on the man… who knows. Either way, I feel better about the signing now. I still say it’s a two-man race between Campbell and Grads for starter. Losman, Frye, Boller, and JR compete for third spot… in that order.

I can’t wait to see the episode of Pawn Stars when Jamarcus rolls into Rick’s shop and mumble’s something about wanting to sell his diamond studded 10 lb necklace in the shape of a jersey for $3 million.
Rick will offer 250k and Russell will get pissed, and then Rick will come up with the idea of having Chumlee and Russell participate in a football throwing contest, and if Russell wins, they give him 500K, if he loses he gets 250k for the necklace.
Of course Chumlee will win.

I should have clarified.
I was mainly refering to what picks 1-3 looked like as opposed to later in the draft. For example, I think in past years, players like Jacoby and B. Capmbell may have been our 1st 2 picks, as opposed to the very sensible and intelligent drafting we did. I’m not saying the later rounds of the draft were bad, but you could definetley see Big Al’s handywork was apperent on Saturday.
Draft rounds 1-3 It looked like Al let the staff do what they wanted, and rounds 4-7 he put his two cents in.

Jason Campbell is getting $3.1 million this year.
so in essence, we’re paying him $6.1 million this season (including the Russell guaranteed payment)
no biggie. rather give up $6.1 million for Campbell than $9.5 million for JaWalrus

Okay, we had a good draft. Now its time to move on to the next phase of things which is deciding which players will compete for the starting positions and who else will be kept to round out the 53 man roster plus the practice squad. That is what off season camps and the pre-season are all about. We already traded away Morrison to make way for the new blood on defense. Cutting JMR will do the same for the offense. My opinion is to get rid of him ASAP. Nothing good can come out of letting him hang around and possible getting injured, costing us even more $$. The sooner he gets booted from the team the better for all concerned. With JMR its addition by subtraction!

What a haul last week:
Rolando McClain, MLB of the future
Lemarr Houston, D-lineman starter
Jared Veldheer, could be a fixture on O-line
Bruce Campbell, ditto
Jacoby Ford, should replace Figurs, Miller & Holland
Walter McFadden, our new nickel corner
Travis Goethel, ILB on 3-4 looks
Jeremy Ware, ST gunner
Stevie Brown, Al Davis CB project.
Quentin Groves, 3rd pass rusher OLB project
Andre Anderson, should fight with G. Russell and Marcel Reece for that 3rd RB spot. I like the sound of this kid, good mix of shifty back and power-back with great hands and made for a one-cut system.
Manase Tonga, decent FB prospect
Chane Moline, another decent FB prospect
Alex Parsons, I hope can add depth at the paper thin gaurd position
Kellen Heard, you “heard” it here first, this is our Desmond Bryant of 2010. Big, shifty run-stuffer can play all over the D-line. Replaced Red Bryant at Texas A&M, when he went down to injuries. This kid had a difficult college career, but could clean it up in the pros. Should be our new Turdell Sands, for better or worse.
Alex Daniels, OLB prospect at 265lbs. This kid was a running back at Minnesota during his Sophmore season. Good quicks and shiftiness, might make a nasty weakside LB option. Real interesting developmental prospect.
Brashton Satele, ILB depth guy, will have to beat out Ricky Brown and Travis Goethel to make the roster.
Jason Campbell, our caretaker QB of the future. May not be an all-star, but he can take this team much further than JaMarcus and he can set an example at the most important position on the roster.

A little tired of the “Al must’ve been asleep … Cable tricked Al … Al had nothing to do with the first 3 rounds” comments. Give me a break. There is absolutely ZERO reason or evidence to believe that. You know Al is still calling the shots on all these picks.
Of course, if McClain is a bust then the same people in here giving the coaches & scouts credit for that pick right now will be back here in a year or two blaming Al Davis for the pick.
Not to mention Saturday (Round 4 on) may have been our best day of the draft in acquiring Bruce Campbell, Jason Campbell, Jacoby Ford and Walter McFadden. So if you want to hate on Al you might as well extend that “he had nothing to do with this draft” talk through the weekend.

Walter McFadden scouting report from NFLDraftScout.com:
Read & React: Good reaction skills, though he doesn’t rush to support the run. Rarely fooled in coverage, showing good burst to the line of scrimmage to defend the receiver screen. Can be beaten with good play-action, but has the acceleration and straight-line speed to recover.
Man Coverage: Natural coverage skills. Rare timed speed, which translates well onto the field. Loose hips and quick feet to turn and run with receivers. Changes directions smoothly and shows a burst to break on the ball. Quick, active hands for press coverage. Lacks the bulk teams are looking for in a press coverage corner, but is aggressive. Doesn’t back down from the challenge of a bigger receiver.
Zone Coverage: A bit higher in his back-pedal than scouts would prefer. Good vision and route-recognition for zone coverage. Keeps his eyes peeled on the quarterback but has a sense of where receivers in front and behind him are going. Breaks quickly on the ball.
Closing/Recovery: One of his better traits. Shows an explosive burst to close on the ball and has natural ball skills (six INTs as a senior). Can be too aggressive fighting for the ball, despite his slight frame, and draw the flag. Times his leaps well to compete against bigger receivers, but can be pushed aside. Needs to add more strength.
Run Support: An area of relative concern. Isn’t a coward, but doesn’t fight through blocks consistently or fight to get involved (only 10 assisted tackles in 2009). Willing to take on the bigger back and is generally reliable in the open field.
Tackling: Scrappy tackler who doesn’t back down from a challenge. Experienced gunner and generally a reliable open-field tackler. Won’t wow anyone with his explosiveness, but consistently gets his opponent to the ground with low, wrap-up tackles.
Intangibles: Good bloodlines. Cousin, Bryant McFadden, is an NFL cornerback for the Cardinals. Cousin Patrick Peterson is a highly-regarded rising junior cornerback for LSU. Accomplished special teams performer. Had to wait his turn at Auburn, but quietly developed into one of the better playmaking corners in the SEC over his two starting seasons. Coaches say he’s matured quite a bit in his four years and now is considered a solid person, smart player and team leader.

I’d much rather get Mawae than Faneca. Center is the leader of the o-line and Mawae is one of the better leaders in the game. He’s a tough, nasty, consistently productive o-lineman. The only knock is that he’s like 38 or 39 right now, but I believe he had a much better season last year than Faneca. Faneca made the Pro Bowl on reputation and was considered by most to be the weakest link on the Jets o-line.

April 26th, 2010 at 9:50 am
RaiderRockstar’s draft would have been:
Round 2 #44 Terrence Cody (instead of Houston)
Round 4 #108 Akwasi Owusu-Ansah (instead of Ford)
Round 5 #138 John Connor (instead of McFadden)
Round 6 #190 Trindon Holliday (instead of Goethel)
Round 7 #251 Ciron Black (instead of Brown)
McClain, Veldheer, Campbell & Ware were solid picks considering who was left on the board imo
then push hard for UDFA’s:
MLB Mike McLaughlin, Boston College
NT Travis Ivey, Maryland
OG Brandon Carter, Texas Tech

Damn it… just watched the ball from Frye to Schilens with 6:45 left in the first half in the second Denver game… that was a BEAUTIFUL deep throw… damn shame that Schilens couldn’t get it pulled in before it was poked out. He should’ve caught it over the shoulder. Oh well, at least we got a 54 yard FG out of it on the next play instead of the throw being picked off (if JR had thrown it, it would have).

4evaRaider,
I think we did a much better job than last year for sure. I am not 100% sold on McClain as a great MLB after Charlie Casserly said he has trouble shedding blocks and I would have taken Anthony Davis and Cody in rounds 1 and 2 instead of the guys we got, but at least we got some football players this time!
Those two giant tackles need a lot of work, but hopefully they develop over time. I don’t know how much help they will be next season. Ford should help the return game if JLH is still a head case. Of course Campbell is much better than Russell or Garbagekowski, so we should at least look decent at QB next year.
I am most excited about our defense. Hopefully, the two draft picks can help stop the run. I still think we should have added a true NT.
I guess I am happy we got some football players, but I don’t exactly think we helped the o-line for next season and we still need a NT, but we got a decent NFL QB which should help alleviate some of our running-game problems and will hopefully help our defense by putting more points on the board and forcing teams to pass on us instead of just running the ball down our throats all day.
April 26th, 2010 at 10:02 am
I guess the NFL’s streak of ZERO QBs who wear jersey #2 NEVER winning a SuperBowl will continue… though we all knew it would anyway.
April 26th, 2010 at 10:02 am
Lemarr Houston has more value than a two-down DT like Cody, but I think we are all wondering who is gonna play in the middle on first and second down, when all we have is DE/DT hybrids. It seems like all the starting D-linemen on our team are best suited to play 3-4 DE: Seymour, Kelly, Bryant, Houston. Where’s the beef?
This appears to be the exciting new scheme that Cable is talking about. A 4-3 front featuring (4) 300 lb linemen, the pass-rush also coming from OLB, and McClain anchoring it all in the middle. That’s 6 guys that can get to the QB, coming from every direction; sounds awesome, but who is gonna make the stop on first and 10, when Chris Johnson is slashing?

Broncos’ McDaniels can kiss job goodbye with Tebow pick
April 22, 2010
By Pete Prisco
Denver Broncos coach Josh McDaniels should enjoy the next year or two in Denver. Really. Soak all of it in. Enjoy being a head coach. Enjoy making all the decisions.
Your days are numbered.
When you trade away Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall and Tony Scheffler, the key components in the Broncos passing game in a year span, and then draft Tim Tebow in the first round of the draft, you are sending a loud message.
Talent doesn’t matter.
Character does.
Why not pick the altar boys from the parish down the street? Aren’t they good kids? Or maybe you can pick all the “A” students in this draft?
It doesn’t matter if they can play. Just make sure they are good “yes men.”
It just doesn’t make any sense.
I understand a coach wanting to have good character guys, but this is going past that.
Tebow is a fifth-round talent.
First round?
Nobody in their right mind would ever say that Tebow plays the position better than Cutler. But Cutler was shipped out for being a bad boy.
Now they have Saint Timmy to fix things.
Here’s a bet: He doesn’t even beat out Brady Quinn.
He makes Quinn and Kyle Orton, the other quarterback, look like John Elway.
Tebow is raw. He doesn’t understand the passing game. He doesn’t read defenses.
Oh, but he’s a good kid.
At least he’ll save the locker room.
Really? If you aren’t playing, character doesn’t matter. The NFL is a cruel business. His rah-rah crap doesn’t matter. They won’t listen. They won’t stand for it.
Crying after losses?
Yeah, right.
Does he work hard? Yes. Does he want to be good? Yes.
But the skills aren’t there. He isn’t close to being as good as Jimmy Clausen. Too bad for Jimmy he doesn’t have the character Tebow has, at least that’s what they say.
The Broncos reached big time for Tebow. But look at the bright side: At least he won’t be running the streets.
He also won’t be starting anytime soon — if ever.
And Josh McDaniels will lose his job in a year or two over this one and his other moves over the past year.

April 26th, 2010 at 10:07 am
I agree with everything you guys said.
Building the roster isn’t done yet. I’d love it if they picked up Mawae and Henderson to bring some veteran know how to the youngsters. Our only vet on the o-line, Gallery, hasn’t done enough winning to be a true example and Seymour needs a 2nd hand on the defensive side since we lost Ellis.
I’m not for Faneca because we already have enough competition at the guard position.
A FB would be nice but I don’t think BJ Askew is any better than Gary Russell. Both are sorta tweeners correct?
April 26th, 2010 at 10:07 am
seen that mcclain youtube link and what struck me the most was alot of arm tackling, no hard hits, doesn’t fly to the ball, and on the auburn reverse, didn’t really hustle. the positives are that he does look instinctive putting himself in the area of the run, good coverage and recognition of backs and te’s, and shed blocks better than expected.

Thec,
I believe that Al ultimately had the final say in every pick, but that he listened to his coaches and everyone had a say in what went down. Ten years from now, Cable will retire from the Raiders HC job with six or seven playoff appearances and will take his new job as Raiders GM and hand over the reigns to Hue (if he’s still with us, hopefully he is). Cable will be a Raiders GM… write that down.
April 26th, 2010 at 10:09 am
As fired up as I am, there is still a long way to go.
First, let’s here the reports from the mini-camp. Is DHB catching better? Then comes the training camp tests where we can see who can play in pads. I’m reallly looking forward to the scrimmages with the Niners. They punked the entire team least year. That is where we will get a better measure of the squad.
Please no injuries…

we are a dangerous team on 3rd down.
but what about 1st down, 2nd down or 3rd & short?
i’m not convinced we’ve made enough progress regarding run defense to challenge for the AFC West
not with Mathews, Sproles, Charles, Jones, Moreno & Buckhalter in this division!

RRs,
That’s why I campaigned for so long to ignore McClain and do our BEST to trade up for Suh or McCoy and then take Micah Johnson in the 3rd-5th. That would solve the run defense problem much better than we have at this exact point in time. Did I say that McClain would be a wasted pick if we didn’t trade for Haynesworth or find another big run-stuffing DT? I believe I DID say that… several times… and I stand by it.

April 26th, 2010 at 10:45 am
I’ve been saying all morning that we have to sign Henderson or trade for Haynesworth… actually, I say that we should do BOTH.
On the other line, I say that we sign Faneca AND Mawae. Those moves make us at least 9-7 and a playoff contender. We won’t hit a title game, but we’ll see postseason play with Raiders on the field instead of on the couch.
April 26th, 2010 at 10:45 am
Where is the history of the big run stuffing NT playing for Marshall or Wauffle?
It’s crazy that the coach comes out and clearly states that the run defense was a priority, we draft the first 2 players with that in mind, and it won’t matter because we didn’t draft the guy YOU wanted?
CMON!
April 26th, 2010 at 10:48 am
Hey Steve ..
Point out some examples in the game you are watching that support the need for Haynesworth AND/or Henderson.
April 26th, 2010 at 10:48 am
Jhill,
I might imply that it has to be any one specific guy in particular, but the truth of it is that I just want an archetype. If we get a big, run-stuffing DT, it doesn’t matter who it is… I just say those names because they fit the archetype and we CAN get them. They are the best options that I see for the position, but if we fill that need with someone else, I won’t complain. When we draft a DT and then Cable says that he is here to play DE, then I WILL continue to say that we need a big run-stuffing DT… since the need STILL exists.
April 26th, 2010 at 10:49 am
Oh no… JR is in the game. The Denver crowd cheers…
April 26th, 2010 at 10:49 am
As opposed to us replacing Warren, Morrison, Howard, and Ellis that is?
April 26th, 2010 at 10:50 am
Ravens drafted Terrence Cody to eventually replace 33 year old Kelly Gregg (starting NT since 2002 – after they let Sam Adams walk)
smart move. Ray Lewis is a happy man
April 26th, 2010 at 10:52 am
Jhill,
There’s no need to use examples from just this one game… watch EVERY big play against us that came from a run up the middle. That is why we need a big run-stuffing DT in the vein of Haynesworth and Henderson.
April 26th, 2010 at 10:53 am
here is the logic as I see it, in its simplest form for the new D-line scheme they are cooking up:
3-4 =(2) 300lb DE’s + (1) 330lb NT + (1) 250lb OLB
4-3 =(2) 270lb DE’s + (1) 300lb 3-tech + (1) 320lb NT
our scheme = (4) 300lb DE/DT’s
total weight 3-4 = 1180lbs
total weight 4-3 = 1160lbs
total weight ours = 1200lbs
the “mass” of our D-line would be spread across the line, and all four of our big men can get to the QB. Could work, I am just worried that our OLB’s are not that strong in coverage.
April 26th, 2010 at 10:54 am
Sometimes the blockers miraculously didn’t make it to the second level, which let KM whiff on the tackle as usual, but there were lots of times where KM never even had a chance because blockers just sliced right through our DL. We needed to replace Kirk and get a big DT. We have accomplished half of that mission.
April 26th, 2010 at 10:54 am
Jhill: who is the 3-4 NT when we use that on occassion?
your boy Willie Jo?
April 26th, 2010 at 10:54 am
JHill,
I gotta agree with you about post #177.
I don’t understand the fixation for some on signing just any old fat blob for the middle of the D-line (or effort when I feel like it players).
Marshall and Waufle have a plan so let ‘em work it. If they feel a need for a fat guy or a slacker then they’ll look for him.
April 26th, 2010 at 10:54 am
BBB: 330lb NT ???
who is that?
April 26th, 2010 at 10:55 am
from SFGate….
Mum’s word from Russell
JaMarcus Russell’s agent, Ethan Lock, did “not want to talk about it” when called this morning to see if the Raiders had asked his client to take a paycut, or if they had talked to the quarterback at all the last couple of days.
Our third question would have been about the report on NationalFootballPost.com today that Russell weighs 3-bills, or 300 pounds.
Oakland must be close to cutting Russell after trading for Washington quarterback Jason Campbell on Saturday. Russell is set to make $9.45 million more this season, but only (ha! only) $3 mil is guaranteed. Why the Raiders would have him at minicamp this weekend and risk him getting hurt, I have no idea.
MY MAN MEL: I love how Mel Kiper gave the Raiders a C- for their draft work (I give them an A, as do most other draft watchers). Kiper had them taking quarterback Jimmy Clausen in the first round, and he is good buddles with Clausen’s agent. Sour grapes?
April 26th, 2010 at 10:56 am
Can Al just assign the NT to Jawalrus. He’s already 300lbs. What’s another 30-50lbs in 4 weeks?
April 26th, 2010 at 10:57 am
Jhill: who is the 3-4 NT when we use that on occassion?
——————————————————
I don’t think we are going to see a 3-4 defense.
We might see some 3 DL sets on passing downs, but a traditional 3-4 is out of the question without a really fat dude in the middle.
I gave up hope for a 3-4 the minute we took Houston instead of Linval Joseph.

If our hunches are true, then John Henderson would ocmplete the picture as far as the defensive overhaul.. We would have every piece in place to be a 3-4 defense. He is 6′7″ 335! That is true nose tackle size. PLEASE PICK THIS GUY UP!!!! What a d-line we would have! Even if Lamarr Houston isnt realy to start we move Kelly to end so the front 7 is as follows:
Seymour/Kelly – DE
Henderson – NT
Wimbley, Scott/Groves -OLB
McClain, Howard, ILB
A true 3-4!!!

the only 330 lb NT we have is Kellen Heard. But I dont think we will be running a 3-4 as often as some people think. All the new personnel where upgrades, rather than system overhauls.

I feel like a big weight has been lifted from my football shoulders (about 300 lbs worth!).
This team finally looks as though it is headed in the right direction.
An 8-8 season would be great for these guys and another solid draft next year could have the Raiders in a spot to compete with the big boys.
Think about this….
Murphy and DHB/Schilens out wide, Jacoby Ford in the slot, Miller at TE, McFadden in the backfield, and Campbell at QB.
That is a ton of speed. This offense should create mismatches and score points.

OMFG!!!
I just watched some games that i had DVR’d of Texas and some highlights and Lamarr Houston is even more of a beast than i had originally thought. He has a great hand punch that jars the OL, is extremely fast for his size, uses his hands very well, and knows how to be effective when double teamed.
Houston>Cody no question

Actually, let’s put the picture back up of Bo Jackson flattening The Boz (I never get tired of that!)
April 26th, 2010 at 12:35 pm
Luckily, the J-Russ jersey I got was a $20 Target knock-off, which is pretty appropriate as it turns out.
I think Veldheer backs up Henderson and starts pushing him right away. Campbell should start at RG, just because Carlisle is like a blood-soaked, 5 day old band-aid at this point, but I am sure they would like him to be the RT at some point. If you watch his game highlights he really excels at the run-blocking.
Henderson,Gallery,Satele,Campbell,Barnes – thats not too bad all the way around. With Veldheer, Morris, Parsons and Walker as back-ups. All we need next year is a look at some new Centers.

Yep they were cool as hell too!!!! I raised my glass to both of them and told them how much excitement is in the air with them here. They both thanked me…I was sitting right in front of them. They were talking football and just trying to get to know each other. Campbell is for sure excited about playing with DMAC,Bush,Chaz,Miller,JLH,DHB and Murphy.
Also JC knows my cousin Marsha who was working for BET in D.C. He totally confirmed that because he use to date her friend the whole time in DC until recently

Well that is up for debate but facts are Cody aint here he is in Bmore so he isnt my concern now. Houston is about to be our DE. I guess they gonna have him lose some weight so he can be quicker off the edge. Cool I say

Parade All-American in HS. Started 8 games as a True Freshamn in the SEC, and made all SEC freshman team.
Sophomore year, started every game, was 3rd team All-American.
Third year, first-team everything, every LB award winning National Champion. (At 20 years old!!)
He still hasn’t turned 21 yet. Can you imagine how good this guy is going to be at 26 years old as a 5 year NFL vet? Holly crap!!!

This is the next eveolution of the game.
Safety / LB / CB when they drop into the slot. LB/DE Stand up then hand down
DT/DE
Thats the way the games going and Davis is ahead of the curve.
April 26th, 2010 at 12:42 pm
Houston isnt losing any weight; I think Waufe, Cable and Marshall are going to run a line of 34 DE’s out there to get after the QB and seal off the run.
Houston,Kelly,Seymour,Bryant
with Shaugnessy, Richardson, Heard and Joesph seeing plenty of time as well.
..and I doubt that they will line up in that order very often. They can move any of those 4 guys to any position on the line. It will keep O-linemen off balance, and their collective strength ’should’ be enough to stop the run.
April 26th, 2010 at 12:42 pm
yeah this was def. my fav. draft since i can remember. i like when the charles woodson’s are sitting there in your lap when it’s your turn to pick. hopefully my man RoMac is along those lines. i won’t get into his tendency for high tackling, lack of punishing tackles, tendency to horse-collar or anything like that…yet. lol. instead i’ll point out that the guy didn’t appear to be fooled at all, and of course we’ve all heard the consensus opinion on him from guys that no a lot more than i do.
Now can somebody explain to me why we didn’t get some DT depth?

Lamarr played the 3-technique, 5 technique and nose guard in college. He was a DT that could line up at every position on the line. In the national championship game he dominated the Bama OL and was a huge why Texas had the #1 rushing defense last year. In the senior bowl he was abusing the OG and had to be double teamed. On a few plays he made Iupati look like a bum.

the difference is that the Saints defense doesnt stop the run, nobody runs on New Orleans for extended periods of time, becuase their offense is throwing up 40 points a game. For us, we need our line to physically stop the run, because until we give teams a reason to attack in the air, they will just keep running the ball. I hope Waufle realized this point, when he drew up this game-plan.

On that note, i’m liking the pickups of Wimbley, Groves, Jason Campbell -makes the team better. That’s the bottom line. I know the jets had the hollywood offseason but there’s no shame in al’s game.

Bucs NT Chris Hovan gained 30 pounds this offseason and is up to 320.
Hovan played in the 290s in the Bucs’ old Tampa 2, but will now be used to “shield” MLB Barrett Ruud. The Bucs suddenly have much more size up front with Roy Miller (310) and Ryan Sims (315) in the rotation. It should benefit Ruud’s tackle numbers. The Tampa 2 scheme is clearly becoming outdated.

Last year I remember the Oakland Raiders stopping anyone on the ground we had Sam Adams as NT.
When we have two UTs as DTs, as we have had with Warren and Kelly, and as we will probably have in 2010, we can’t stop anyone.

Last year I remember the Oakland Raiders stopping anyone on the ground we had Sam Adams as NT.
When we have two UTs as DTs, as we have had with Warren and Kelly, and as we will probably have in 2010, we can’t stop anyone.
Is it just a coincidence? Maybe.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
the problem we’ve ahd over the past 4-5 years is that we would have 2 legit DT’s hemmed in with 2 lightweight pass rushers who couldn’t stop the run…
we ran more of a 2-5 to be honest…
but…
we line up 4 legit 300 pound run-stoppers…
there WILL be RUN STOPPAGE…
run stoppage…
that is what it is about !!!

Mr. Vehldeer’s jersey # 68
Mr. B. Campbell’s is # 74
according to the roster on the raider’s official website via NFL.com
omly our QB Jason Campbell does not have a jersey number.
His old number (at Washington) #17 is currently held by WR Mr. Holland.
Looks like Jonathan is going to be getting a nice expensive steak dinner this week along with the vastly improved offensive line.
=================================================
Not likely, all Campbell has to do is wait for Holland to get cut.Thats a certainty at this point.

without a hefty NT, teams may still be able to go up the middle of our defense, but with Lemarr Houston and Desmond Bryant on the outside, they will not be able to take it outside as often.
If Kelly, Seymour, Bryant and Houston are moving all over the line during games, it will be hard for teams to focus on a particular spot. It could work, as we have 3 pretty unique players in Kelly, Seymour and hopefully Houston. These are quick, strong, agile D-linemen that can play the run and attack the QB.
I just really hope that Kellen Heard makes the team, for those 4th and 1’s.

we’re not adding a nose tackle and we’re not going to run a 3-4 defense on occasion (as Nnamdi21 proved that we did last year)
4-3 defense with starters: Shaughnessy, Kelly, Seymour & Houston.
regular rotation includes Bryant, Joseph, Richardson & Gunheim – injury pushes one of these guys in the starting lineup
the only new starter on the D-Line is Houston and he’s gonna elevate the run defense from 29th to Top 15 ???

It’s a great off-season to be a Raiders fan! Isn’t it?
Outstanding draft, one of the best in the NFL — addressing MOST needs.
If Jason Campbell beats out Gradkowski, and plays at a level better-than-average for NFL QB’s, he will be one of the best 4th-round trade acquisitions in NFL history. He has the tools, and now has a chance, to be great.
If Gradkowski clearly wins out, it means he’s obviously got “it” and we’ll all be better off for it. Grads has the mettle and ability…and his teammates think he’s got what it takes to get it done.
The players in the locker room KNOW they have a few QB’s that can get it done now.
We still have BIG NEEDS: RB, OL (especially one who can play C). And don’t forget Gallery’s bad back, surgery notwithstanding.
Fantastic job by the front office so far — this year is off to a great, promising start. Mini-camp this weekend will be full of electricity!!

RR-you seem to forget about McClain.Besides, you can’t double team everyone up front.Seymour draws doubles. So does Kelly. If,and it is a big if,Houston is the run stuffer at DE he is believed to be,that will free up the LBs to make plays at the LOS,not 5-9 yds down the field. If runs are forced into the middle and Sey and Kelly are eating up the blockers, well you get the picture.

We use the Hybrid for blitz packages only.
We use the Base 4-3, sometimes 4-6 if we move up a safety to stop the run.
Doesn’t matter 4-3 or 3-4 it takes 8 guys to plug up the box on running downs.
I like the 3-4 for blitzes because you can hide a blitz and overload one side quickly and get to the quarterback faster.
I’m just hoping. I wouldn’t run a 3-4 Base defense.
We’ll probably use “3-4″ 10 percent of the time.

==============================================================
Because he is strong at the point of attack and will hold the edge, unlike Ellis and Burgess did. He and Seymour will get double teamed which frees up other defender to make plays. The NT’s job in a 3-4 his to control the middle and occupy blockers, getting double teamed is occupying blockers. You have to have an NT to run a 3-4 but he does not have to be a stud, he just has to execute his responsibilities especially when you have two stud DE’s on either side of him.
April 26th, 2010 at 1:50 pm

“What makes Russell unique in bust annals is that never before have we seen a quarterback literally eat himself out of a job. Such a thing is usually reserved for offensive linemen and sitcom stars. Eventually, as his weight ballooned to nearly 300 pounds, Russell had a bouncier caboose than J. Lo. Some women pay thousands of dollars to have breasts like Russell’s.”

Cable was almost as bad at play calling as Russell was at QB. Veldheer & Campbell essentially replaced Green & Pears. Parsons & Rodd will compete with Walker & Carlisle for the starting RG spot.
It’ll be interesting to see if Veldheer or Campbell can snag a starter job from the beginning by outplaying Henderson or Barnes …

After seeing what he did all last season, what he did in the N.C. game against Bama, and in these all star games against future NFL players, I’m hoping that he doesnt get double teamed. last year, our defense got in the backfield and blew up plenty of plays. it was those gashers for 10-20 yards that have killed us for years. I def. think it’ll be better this year now that Morrisson won’t be tip-toeing around blocks 12 yards before the play gets to him. McClain already plays better in a booth than Kirk ever will. but yeah, give me some DEPTH on the line. Start whoever you want, but we’re gonna need more “substance” in the trenches to make a real push i think .

I’m sure he’s already looking at VY and CJ tape.

Cartwright played eight seasons in Washington, totaling 222 kick returns to go with 215 carries.
***
215 carries for 889 yards & 6 TD’s. at least he averages over 4 yards per carry!
Also has 59 catches for 555 yards & 2 TD’s …
I personally hope we use him at RB to replace Fargas and compete with Andre Anderson (rookie from Tulane)

Heres some of McClain’s weaknesses.
“McLain only possesses adequate lateral quickness when scraping down the line against the run. Is capable in coverage but can struggle at times when asked to play man. Very sound in his reads and pursuit but isn’t a true sideline-to-sideline guy against the run.”

Adalius Thomas to the jets or the ravens????

The funiest?
“predicting what Oakland will do is like keeping Russell away from Kripsy Kremes”! LOl.
“the first quarterback ever to eat himself out of a job”! Lol.

Rock Cartwright is 5′8″ 218 lbs
30 years old. played FB at Kansas State University
Brad Hoover is 6′0″ 245 lbs
33 years old though … but why didn’t we get him?
do we have to have a FB that can return kicks ???

Cartwright is a better player than G. Russell imo. I believe he was at one time the FB for the ravens

England,
The funniest line was this one for me….Some women pay thousands of dollars to have breasts like Russell’s.
so funny but shameful that we had to put up with that crap. I almost left Al’s bandwagon over the Jawalrus issue. And I have put up with lots of craps from Al over the years, starting with Marcus Allen.
+++++++++++++++++++++
AIG, you and I have had our disagreements, I can’t even remember what they were over, something about wife beating maybe, but anyhow, the Marcus Allen thing was when I was a 14 or 15 year old kid and I just remember sitting there watching Raider games and there for some unexplained reason was my second favorite Raider (second only to Howie Long) riding the pine while the team struggled.
And then he became a KC Chief and killed us over and over again.
Al will always be a fool to me for that situation. And he hasn’t done much since to disprove my opinion of him.
The curse of Marcus Allen….in 30 years it might be up there with the Cubs/Goat thing.

NVM he has played his whole career in DC

Forgive me, I don’t understand what you mean by CY and CJ?
I want McClain studying what the Chragers, Denver, KC and everyone else we play did last year…
McClain was basically a coach in the field for the Crimson Tide and one of the reasons I’m optomistic about him.
No offense Kirk but I think he was miscast and over whelmed.
I watched the Raider run D carefully pouring over their games since Morrison took over MLB and the fact is McClain appears to be everything he simply was not.
Thats good and bad.
Kirk had the speed and skills to play better man cover and get sideline to sideline, McClain not as much.
But, through study and understanding McClain’s got “elite instincts” and through his preparation will help his brother Oakland defenders in their assignments should the athlete in them take over more than the football player.
These were all things Morrison simply wasn’t capable of in Oakland and a major reason why the run defense during his time at the helm gave up so many long runs and TDS.

======================
IF he takes a pay cut Russell can stay. I really think the balls in his court.
Look, I’m a man, same as anyone and I’ve been weak and made mistakes but I for one simply could NOT take the money and run.
$30 million, $300 million, doesn’t matter.
I couldn’t live with myself and the eternal “might have beens”.
He’s young, perhaps selfish and lazy. I’ve been there too. Maybe its my age, maybe not, but never in my life but I could not walk away without trying.
