Campbell on Russell
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, April 27th, 2010 at 2:09 pm in Oakland Raiders.
If only JaMarcus Russell had taken Jason Campbell’s advice.
On Dec. 9, Campbell was on a conference call with Bay Area writers the week the Raiders were hosting the Washington Redskins.
The subject of Russell, who Campbell knew as an SEC competitor as quarterback at Auburn, came up.
Russell had lost his job to Bruce Gradkowski, who had directed a 27-24 win over Pittsburgh going into the Redskins game.
“I would tell JaMarcus just to continue to work hard . . . don’t take this offseason like, `man, things just haven’t worked out,’ ” Campbell said. “He’s still young in his career. He still has a lot ahead of him and a lot of opportunities to turn it around.
“He’s got to stay positive, study more, put in the work in the weight room, put in the work on the field, after practice. Do the extra things to get ahead as a quarterback in the NFL. The room for error for quarterbacks is so small, but at the same time, you can overcome anything. He’s young, he has a strong arm and he just needs to believe in himself, keep that confidence and turn things around this offseason.”
In a game in which Gradkowski was lost at halftime with MCL tears in both knees, Campbell was 16 of 28 for 222 yards, two TDs and no interceptions in a 34-13 win by the Redskins _ ruining any chance for the Raiders to build off the Pittsburgh win.
Russell was 10 of 16 for 74 yards in Gradkowski’s absence. The collective sag in the Raiders’ performance was so in evidence Tom Cable went with Charlie Frye the following week in Denver, and then went back to him again to in the final three games of the season even though Russell came off the bench to lead a comeback win over the Broncos after Frye left with a concussion.
Cable said Saturday Russell was expected at this weekend’s minicamp and even said there was no reason he couldn’t be the starter if he was the best quarterback.
ESPN’s John Clayton reported Tuesday the Raiders were preparing to cut Russell _ possibly before the mandatory minicamp.
Common sense says the Raiders will not pay Russell $9.45 million this year to watch Campbell play quarterback
Asomugha chats on NFL.com
Will the Raiders turn up the defensive pressure with the addition of strong side linebacker Kamerion Wimbley and Trevor Scott getting a full year on the opposite side?
Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha will believe it when he sees it.
Alan from Florida asked Asomugha during a chat on NFL.com, “Last year the raiders had some success blitzing but got away from it; fans have been screaming for a more aggressive less vanilla style; do you see that coming this year?”
Asomugha’s response?
“Not necessarily. I think it’s going to depend on how well we can practice that stuff in camp and how confident the coaches are with that scheme. It’s never really been something that we’re heavy on, so I can’t say that will change now.”
No confirmations on undrafted FAs
The Raiders still have not confirmed the signings of any undrafted free agents, nor is there any confirmation a reported signing of running back Rock Cartwright.

People are talking about the Raiders like they’re an NFL franchise. They’re not. Their Al Davis’s bizarre project. And that means that nothing is certain on Russell. I wouldn’t be surprised if he stays. Al has admitted he likes chaos. So those of you suggesting Al would get rid of Russell to let Campbell know that he is the guy? Ha ha ha!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Maybe Jason Campbell can buy Jamarcus’s home on the Oakland Hills. It will be a win-win situation for both. Campbell will get a nice home at a great price and Jamarcus won’t lose as much as he was destined to lose based on today’s Real Estate economy. Maybe Kool Kell can get the listing.
JaMarcus Russell, selected by the Oakland Raiders as the 1st pick overall of the 2007 NFL Draft out of LSU, definitely owns a home fit for a king (or the top pick of the NFL Draft). Russell, while undergoing intense contract negotiations with the Raiders, negotiated the purchase of real estate to the tune of a $3 million home in Oakland. The home offers over 5800 sq. ft., 6 bedrooms, 6 full bathrooms and 2 half bathrooms, 4-car garage, 4 fireplaces, large game room, wet bar, and bay views.

I read a really disturbing article on the Bleacher report about Russell being given a DVD to take home & review from a poor game performance on a Sunday, when one of the coaches asked him if had learned anything from the video he said he had learned a lot from it,,but he was given a blank dvd just to see if he’d actually view it. I dont know how true that is but if it is, I couldnt have any sympathy for him if he’s released even though I was hoping he’d finally turn it around. I will say that Im really comfortable with the signing of J. Campbell but Im not gona scream playoffs yet. 9-7 would be a huge success for us. The only way the Raiders win 8 games is if Al Davis dies before the season starts, and whoever takes over the team fires Cable immediately and brings in Gruden. Anything short of those events: 5-11.

Being that it was from the Bleacher Report,,thats why I kinda questioned the authenticity of it, because a lot strange sh#t comes from the B.R. Eitherway it looks like J-Cam is now our QB so he has my support & I hope the O-line can block for more than 2seconds.

In ‘03, Al Davis had a bunch of aging stars at the end of their careers who couldn’t recover from the Super Bowl disaster, while losing Gannon to injury. I would hardly call that a Pro Bowl roster.

JaMarcus Russell could go down as biggest draft bust ever
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 27, 2010 6:37 PM ET
When NFL Network compiled its list of the Top 10 draft busts in league history, Ryan Leaf came in first.
Some day they’ll update that list, and JaMarcus Russell may just supplant Leaf in the top spot.
If the reports out today that Russell will be released are correct, the historical record will show that the Raiders spent the first pick in the draft on a player who provided them with 25 starts and completed 354 of 680 passes (52.1%) for 4,083 yards, with 18 touchdowns and 23 interceptions. Russell was sacked 70 times and fumbled 25 times.
For the most part Leaf’s numbers with the San Diego Chargers were even worse than that, which might lead some to conclude that Russell can’t be a bigger bust than Leaf (even though, if reports that he weighs 300 pounds are true, he has a bigger bust than Leaf).
But Leaf was the second overall pick in 1998. Russell was the first overall pick in 2007. There have been quarterbacks picked first overall who turned out to be bad, but none so spectacularly bad as Russell.
Leaf recently told the Los Angeles Times, “I used to go to bed at night hoping somebody else like Heath Shuler might magically leapfrog me on those all-time bust lists. It never happened. Why? Because I am No. 1. I can’t even think of anyone else in the ballpark that might be close to my combination of disappointment and failed expectations.”
Russell is in the ballpark now.

ITS FUNNY YOU KNEW WHO I WAS TALKING ABOUT
April 27th, 2010 at 3:45 pm
And the reason the ‘03 team started losing is because Gruden’s presence had completely worn off by that time. Al Davis ruined that football team, consisting mostly of Gruden’s players, when he traded Gruden. It was one of the best teams in football. And if Gruden had stayed, we would have had better talent than what Al replaced those veterans with. The transition would have been better, and we probably would have had a couple of playoff appearances afterward, just as Tampa BAy had a couple with Gruden after the ‘02 season.
April 27th, 2010 at 3:45 pm
Regardless, if the team was the same in ‘03, how is Davis responsible for ruining the team?
April 27th, 2010 at 3:46 pm
And Gater fan, when I say fake Raider fan, I’m talking about the kind who are really Al Davis fans. If Al Davis sold the Raiders tomorrow and bought the Broncos, you’d be out buying a Tebow jersey. THAT’S a fake. I’m Raiders till I die, with or without Al. You’re not. You’re going wherever Al goes.
April 27th, 2010 at 3:47 pm
I agree that Davis should have kept Gruden, but your argument seems like a stretch.
April 27th, 2010 at 3:47 pm
Paine, who traded Gruden? Did he trade himself? Most of the ‘03 team was Gruden’s players. Unless you can come up with a name of someone other than Al DAvis who is responsible for Gruden’s trade, you haven’t even begun to put up an argument. This is why I accused you earlier of being a stupid kool aid drinker. Now you’re acting like it again.

Deuce Deuce, maybe Gruden isn’t good enough for any other teams in the NFL. But he’s good enough for the Raiders, and far better than our current head coach. Then again, half of the fans are better than Cable. They could just show up and take orders from Al, too.

No, I didn’t know that the team would fall apart. No one did. Why, because you can’t predict that. The Miami Heat were swept in the first round of the playoffs the year after they won the championship because they were old. But no one would have predicted that before the season started.

And that speaks to my point, AB. Al Davis had arguably the best team in the NFL, and then turned to a losing team in a matter of ONE YEAR. The Raiders 4-12 season after the SB loss is the worst season any team has ever had after being in a SB. That’s exactly what I’m talking about when I say that Al has ruined better teams than this one. And you’re saying age? BS. That same team went to the SB a year earlier. Age gets you 9-7, something around there, maybe barely missing the playoffs. Complete organizational chaos, courtesy of Al Davis, gets your 4-12 following 11-5 and the AFC crown. That’s my point. And this same guy is running the team now. We had a decent draft that makes us a little bit better on paper than the past few years, and you guys want me to think playoffs, considering recent history? You guys are NUTS!

I don’t agree with Smith. Leaf was in a better situation. The Raiders have been a dysfunctional franchise since Gruden left. I think Russell does better on the Charger team that Leaf was drafted on. Peyton Manning would have been a bust in Oakland. No QB will ever succeed here while Al’s here, not since Gruden left. And that includes Campbell or the perpetually injured Gradkowski.

And, Fat Kidd, that response is indicative of the Raiders mindset, as well, unfortunately. The organization doesn’t view the Cable incident as just the type of chaos that makes it impossible for a team to develop in today’s fast paced NFL environment, they think it’s cool. They’re talking about how he won the fight. More proof as to how out of touch they are. This isn’t the ’70s. In today’s pro sports environment, concentration is key. In fact, what Cable did wouldn’t have even flown in the ’70s. Who did Madden ever punch? I think Madden has the best winning percentage of any coach in history, doesn’t he?
April 27th, 2010 at 4:34 pm
Russell could land with the Redskins!
April 27th, 2010 at 4:35 pm
kiffen no longer at oakland, gruden no longer at oakland, madden no longer at oakland,al davis im still here baby!!!
April 27th, 2010 at 4:36 pm
Cable needs to start punching his players. And he needs to stand up to his boss. He doesn’t work in a factory. He’s the head coach of a pro sports franchise. He’s in a position to really leave a profound mark on sports history. Instead, he’s taking orders. Now that’s the true definition of a pu s s y. More so than Randy Hanson could ever be. In fact, if Cable would stand up to DAvis the way Hanson stood up to Cable, Cable might actually walk out of here with a winning percentage somewhere near .500.

Afternoon Fellas,
Hey Pete how’s it goin?
Leaf and Russell are 1a and 1b in my book.
JaMarcus has not been able to demonstrate the most basic of tasks for a pro athelete. Be in shape.
JaMarcus has what is acknowledged as one of the better QB coaches in Paul Hackett.
He was provided with the facility, the coach, and the play book.
All that was required of Him was to put in the work.
The trade for Campbell demonstrates that JaMarcus is not regarded as the “Future of The Franchise”
April 27th, 2010 at 4:38 pm
MR ???
did you really accuse Hanson of being an assistant coach ???
April 27th, 2010 at 4:38 pm
I just want to the Raiders to win. simple as that. My deep thought of the day.
April 27th, 2010 at 4:39 pm
Al Davis is only here because he owns the team, Fat Kidd. This whole comeback of “where is he now?” by Davis loyalists whenever one of DAvis’s enemies is brought up is so stupid, because if Davis didn’t own an NFL team, he would have been in a nursing home 20 years ago. Al Davis is not still employed in the NFL because of his talent or smarts. He owns a franchise. Nobody can get rid of him. His longevity is not based on merit. Get a clue.

in its daily triumphal return to the Raider blog MR/KiffinRaider attempts once again with insincerity to insinuate itself into the world of Raider fans.
MR/KiffinRaider as a jellyfish withering upon the sand in the tropic sun, its life force diminished and waning, in its tiny voice it says “harrumph.”
there was a quotation in a movie I remember, I believe that it went something like…”MR/KiffinRaider is as MR/KiffinRaider does”.

Ha! Cable is a YES man. No backbone. Hanson is the template of all things manly.
Cable is still standing, and the Raiders have had their best draft in years.
Al made the picks. Cable and staff provided input.
I don’t think Hanson was in on any of those meetings.

Pete, get a f’n clue before you jump into a discussion and start blurting dumb shyt. I was talking about Raider fans who make fun of former Raider coaches, etc., for no longer being in the league, like Jon Gruden, and I was responding to them by saying that Al Davis is only in the league because he owns the team. Of course, in order to understand the context of a discussion, you have to have an attention span of at least a beetle, or a skunk, anything higher than that of the average Raider fan.

MR, name calling is so beneath you…right?
It was one of the best drafts for the Raiders in years. Yes.
And compared to the other 31 NFL Teams that drafted in 2010, It has been acknowledged by Raider Critics to have been better than most all of those teams in 2010.
So, COMPARED to all other 31 teams in 2010 NFL Draft…Your Oakland Raiders kicked ass.

Maybe Jason Campbell can buy Jamarcus’s home on the Oakland Hills. It will be a win-win situation for both. Campbell will get a nice home at a great price and Jamarcus won’t lose as much as he was destined to lose based on today’s Real Estate economy. **Maybe Kool Kell can get the listing.**
If Jabustus is reading this I hardily recommend Kool Kell to him. He defended him throughout this process and probably still thinks he could be the next Warren Moon if only he was coached right or the line was fixed or it was not foggy in Oakland etc…
April 27th, 2010 at 9:03 pm
Ah well its kinda sad and predictable that Russell would fail. He had no oline help, a bunch of rookie wideouts and some of the worst playcalling this side of Detroit.
But whatever, he should have applied himself. That much money and he could’nt come in in-shape? And the fumbles…every time he took a hit.
Im just saying its gotta be 50/50 on the demise of the Russell era in Oakland
