So, pete, are you on the same page now? Do you now realize that I never said the other owners didn’t have the same power as Al does? Do you understand that my point was in response to idiots here making fun of Gruden for not being in the league? Or are you still confused?

Seymour, Al DAvis would not be in this league if he wasn’t an owner. He wouldn’t have been in the league 20 years ago. Gruden won a Super Bowl 7 years ago. When did Al Davis win his last Super Bowl? Before you were born, probably. Davis can’t touch Gruden when it comes to success in the modern day league.

    ==================================================
You are correct in stating the obvious with respect to Gruden. He won a Super Bowl.

Gruden took Tony Dungee’s roster to the Super Bowl and won.

I give Gruden credit for taking the same roster and winning it all. Something Dungy did not do in Tampa.

The team that Gruden’s Buc’s beat was whom? The Raiders?

So what really seperated Gruden from AL in the Modern era?

    One Game.

    ====================================

exactly. Gannon was a veteran QB developed by Hackett. he came here when KC opted to go with Elvis Grbac after Gannon went 5-2 down the stretch to get them into the playoffs. Behind Grbac they promptly lost their lst round playoff game. Gannon promptly came here. Can’t really give Gruden credit for developing Gannon.

In Oakland, it’s Jason Campbell’s job to lose
Posted by Mike Florio on April 27, 2010 9:31 PM ET
Raiders coach Tom Cable says that quarterback Jason Campbell shouldn’t assume that he’ll be the starting quarterback in 2010.

Still, a source with knowledge of the situation tells us that, absent a complete meltdown by Campbell, he’ll be the Week One starter for the Raiders.

So why is Cable throwing water on the anointment of Campbell? The likely explanation is that Cable is trying to instill a sense of competition in the offseason program and coming training camp. It’s also possible that the Raiders want JaMarcus Russell to think that he’d have a chance to keep the job if he agrees to restructure a contract that currently pays him $3 million in guaranteed salary and $6.45 million in non-guaranteed salary.

Regardless, Campbell currently is in line to become the next starting quarterback — and hopefully to provide the kind of leadership that the offense hasn’t enjoyed since Rich Gannon retired.

Jake Locker is a lock to go No. 1. That kid is the real deal. I didn’t realize Luck would also be draft eligible next year. Hopefully we’re so good this year that we wouldn’t have had a shot at either anyway, but I’ll be extra pissed if we have another top-10 pick and would’ve had a shot at either of those guys. They’re both going to be damn good QBs.

  47. Guy Says:

Chris we have no 1st next year, remember Seymour? Hopefully there are some quality C’s in the 2nd and some good nose tackles and guards later on. We will probably see a new WR if we slack there too, wish we didn’t have DHB.

Schilens and Murphy on the outside with Ford in the slot would be perfect. higgins may fit there too if he is not shell shocked.

  48. buckeyeraider Says:

    what’s happenin Raider Nation?
Everybody still “Geeked” over last weekends events?
I damn sure am. I think you can feel the aura around this team starting to change. Things are starting to look up, fellas.
Cable has talked about changing the culture of losing that has envbeloped this team over the last seven years. I think initially many fans, especially on here, scoffed. The general perception was that the guy was a buffoon.
However, I feel the tide is starting to turn. People are buying in. This didn’t start last thursday people. They have been bringing in some good young football players for awhile..Branch, Shaunessy, Mitchell, Murphy., and more.
I know I’m a glass half full kinda guy regarding the Raiders, But better days are right around the corner. I can feel it.

  49. Kirk Says:

    Sign DT John Henderson

  51. buckeyeraider Says:

    YoungAmerican,
Sounds good to me. I was pushing for Haynesworth trade prior to the draft. If he is unavailable, Henderson would be next best option. IMO. This roster seems loaded at LB and DE, but still too thin at DT.
I heard he was visiting KC. Has anybody heard an update? Did he sign? Hopefully his agent has him playing the field, and listening to all offers. He needs to get his big butt to Oakland.

Maybe Jason Campbell can buy Jamarcus’s home on the Oakland Hills. It will be a win-win situation for both. Campbell will get a nice home at a great price and Jamarcus won’t lose as much as he was destined to lose based on today’s Real Estate economy. **Maybe Kool Kell can get the listing.**

If Jabustus is reading this I hardily recommend Kool Kell to him. He defended him throughout this process and probably still thinks he could be the next Warren Moon if only he was coached right or the line was fixed or it was not foggy in Oakland etc…

Jason Campbell was the best QB coming out of the 2005 draft.

Alex smith came from a spread offense.

Aaron Rodgers had a lot of question marks cuz of tedford’s past QB production in NFL.

    ————————

That was the whole point of my post (46) which you were responding to: We don’t have a No. 1 therefore, barring throwing a ton of stuff at one of the teams at the top of that draft, we’ll have no shot at Locker or Luck. I still like the Seymour trade, but probably not if it cost us a shot at one those two QBs. However, I’m hoping that we do so well this year that we wouldn’t be slotted to pick until the end of Round 1 anyway and would never have got those guys.

Campbell was considered a minor reach by the Redskins at the end of Round 1 that year. In retrospect it’s clear Rodgers was by far the best and there was a lot of debate about whether Smith or Rodgers would go No. 1.

    —-

It’s not all black and white. There’s an awful lot of cause and effect involved. A QB can make an OL and the WRs look really good or really bad, and vice-versa. A medicore QB with tons of time will find open WRs and a Pro-Bowler behind a seive will get mauled. Rookie WRs can be made to look like world killers with a good QB (see Indy), while a bad QB can make great WRs look horrible with passes in the wrong place, wrong time, the wrong touch. When it comes to play calling, if the play is not executed as it is called, is the issue the call itself? As a corollary, if the playbook must be dumbed down so far to fit the limitations of the personnel and the defense can easily guess what’s coming, is that more of an issue with the play calling or the personnel itself?

One semi-scientific way to find the root cause of a problem is to change only one variable at a time and try the same experiments. The closest that we have to this is seeing how the team fared with someone not wearing #2 at QB. The results were pretty clear improvement. The fact is that a supposedly super talented franchise QB was outperformed but not one, but two journeyman QBs that couldn’t keep backup jobs on other teams. When either of those two were in the game, the facts are that the line played better (not awesome, but they gave up less sacks and the running game was improved), the WRs made more plays, and the play calling seemed goog enough to move the chains.

With lack of decent evidence it’s easy to conject that the situation was the root cause. But the evidence pretty clearly said otherwise. The only experiment left to prove otherwise is to see Russell on a different team and measure his success there. But that’s dependent on someone actually wanting to give him a shot. If he doesn’t get one, that’s pretty telling too, unless you propose to know more than 31 other sets of professional evaluators of talent at the NFL level.

I can’t think of any other QB I rather see in the opponents backfield. We’d only have to cover 1/2 the field and when putting pressure on the QB, being prepared for the recovery of the sure fumbles. Been there & done that when we were on his side of the ball – it’s simply not fun or the right place to be. He’s gotta be worth 7-14 points for every opponent he faces.

I agree with you that there was better production when the QBs changed…but look what happened they did get in there (injuries). In terms of development of a rookie/2nd year did not have the play calling that a Mark Sanchez benefited from in NY. A lot of runs limited passing out of the play-action to help get a rhythm. Instead there was 1st down bombs(Denver game).

We probably could have established the run with the talent that we had.

But in the end if he did not want to learn the playbook, be in-shape, and accept accountabilty…no one could have helped him.
