ESPN feels strongly both ways

A day after John Clayton reported the Raiders were preparing to cut JaMarcus Russell, Adam Schefter is reporting through his Twitter account that Russell is expected to attend this weekend’s minicamp and compete for his job.

I’m pulling for Schefter on this on this one.

An interesting minicamp becomes even better if Russell takes the field.

How does he look? Is he throwing the ball better than he did at last year’s minicamp? How many snaps does he get as compared to Jason Campbell, Charlie Frye and Kyle Boller?

My understanding is that Russell is in the building today, working out. That make sense. He’s still employed by the Raiders until told otherwise and stands to make at least $3 million.

    1st of course.

Who cares, cut his stupid fat azz.

  • JaMarcus Boucher

Simply the WORST pick in the HISTORY of the NFL.

    CUT HIM

  • JaMarcus Boucher

He’s probably to stupid to realize his own teammates don’t want him in the building.

Your understanding that he is in the building working out today eh Jerry? What is he working out on? Lunch?

  • SD-Raider

why are we keeping this tub of lard around? get that cancer out of the building so we can start rebuilding this team with people who want to work hard and win games.

How can you play football and not be in the gym at least 3 to 4 times a week!

Football is a physical sport, and you need to be physical. If he doesn’t like being in the gym then he should do something else like Golf.

  • JaMarcus Boucher

He likes to eat more than he likes to play football or workout. So he just needs to leave, be a chef, or work at McDonalds… Just fn leave.

  • RaiderSteve

We could use a replacement for Run Run Jones…

  • Damn They Suck

anyone think that maybe, just maybe, he is clinically depressed?

    Restructure to the league minimum…

When its all said and done bspn will be able to say they had the story right!!!!!!

This is awesome news!!!!!! This guy has been made the scapegoat for everything that’s wrong in the world. It’s complete blsht!! He had the worst supporting cast in football last year. His crime is that he didn’t work miracles. Why fix the supporting cast and then cut him after paying him $40 million? And Jason Campbell failed in Washington. He doesn’t deserve to be handed anything. I want to see JR compete with him just like he had to compete with Ryan Perriloux and Matt Flynn before his junior year. We know how that turned out. And I can’t wait to see all these “sources” backtrack when he’s not pushing three bills.

  • Seymour Bush

The best thing to do is hold onto him. That gives Campbell someone to compete with in addition to Gradkowski. Competition is what makes teams better. The more, the merrier.

Lol, I hope Russell fakes an injury and bilks Al out of another $10 million dollars…Al deserves it for keeping that cancer in the locker-room.

    New post up

  • SteveAlford21

When I lived in Cali, I was building custom computers and selling them on Craigslist or through friends spreading the word about a guy who could build an awesome rig. I had plenty of money and got lazy. I ballooned up to 218 pounds before reality set in and I realized that I had to do something. I know how JR feels. When you can put in minimum effort and still come out way ahead, it’s easy to deteriorate. I, however, did NOT have coaches and team representatives telling me what I needed to be doing, giving me fines for being overweight and late to meetings, or just being on my case in general. I see how JR could have gotten this way, but I don’t understand how it could happen with all the attention he gets… unless he really just doesn’t give a sh-it AT ALL. Maybe he paid one too many visits to Bella Vista (it’s up in the mountains near Methusela Trail… and I highly recommend it. Order a glass of milk with dinner, then a glass of Jameson and check out the wine steward’s reaction as he looks back and forth from whiskey to milk… it’s priceless. Their NY Strip is fantastic, btw… it’s great to find a place who knows what “Rare” truly means)

    JaGreatness workout regimen :

5:00 a.m. – alarm goes off, hit snooze button
    5:30 a.m. – hit snooze button again
    6:00 a.m. – unplug alarm clock
8:30 a.m. – crawl outta bed and order one of the entourage to pick up 15 sausage McMuffins.
11:00 a.m.- turn off the video game, pick out correct earrings, adjust stocking cap, head for practice
    12 noon – lunch
1:00 p.m. – watch some game film of teammates not making plays for oneself.
2:00 p.m. – stare into space as passing drills take place.
    3:30 p.m. – drive away from practice.
4:00 p.m. – begin ten hours (would be more but allowances must be made for training) of eating, drinking, smoking, gambling and chasing tail.

    Brilliant!

Dust off those JamCarcass jerseys fellas. The big boy is back for another round. I’m sure he’ll have slightly better camp than last year–how could he not–and that will cause some sort of a QB controversy, thus spoiling the momentum of Campbells arrival, etc. Could be another implosion if Al doesn’t cut bait.

  • Raider17

I’m down with Raiderdebo!!! Amen Brother! Nobody is apologizing for Russell, but it takes a lil more thought to analyze what’s wrong with the Raiders than a bunch of fat jokes. I’m so sick of that nonsense. I support the Jason Campbell trade and think he should be the starter. I think JR’s holdout killed him. Worse thing he could have done, but changing coaches on him midstream didn’t help either. JR needed more stability than anyone on that team. Peyton Manning has had one OC his WHOLE career. I’m still pulling for this kid. He’s a Raider!!! I thought that’s what being a fan is all about, supporting your team. I would redo his contract, but no way should we cut him. Now back to your tired fat jokes!

    Debo are you that dumb?
    honestly?
    i mean HONESTLY?

  • samsam

Russell won’t increase any competition… he’s not as good as Campbell or Gradkowski… he is a detriment.
    This is bad news.

this is sad…..because jbust is a great practice passer!!! when nothings on the line, he’ll give everyone a false hope, please let him go!! even jeff garcia said he’s incredible in drills, but it doesnt transfer over to games!!!

  • E-MAN909

Russell your a complete fck-up! He’s going into training camp with the intention of trying to improve but in reality he just wants to milk big Al for his dough. Al, do us all a favor and cut his fat ass already!

I totally agree with you Raider17, however, it has been WELL documented in the news media as well as the Raider staff themselves….Jacarcus DOES NOT WANT TO RESTRUCTURE HIS CONTRACT!!!!!!! I am getting tired of naive people saying Jacarcus needs to restructure this Al needs to restructure that, the Raiders’ need to redo this….Jacarcus is selfish, he only seems to care about himself! If he had wanted to help out for the good of the team, he would have ALREADY restructured his contract!!!! SO PLEASE ENOUGH OF THE CONTRACT STUFF!!!! ITS GETTING A LITTLE ANNOYING….Now back to the tub of lard……..

darn. was hoping to wake up today and read about JR being cut. guess it’ll have to wait until training camp.

  • tatum31

While cutting Russell would certainly be a defensible decision, so is keeping him an easily defended idea. Actually MAKING decisions is a bit tougher than sitting behind a keyboard and honking on and on, back seat driving.
Going on, and on, and on about his draft pick being stupid is stupid. He was a top 10 – probably a top 5 pick in EVERYBODY’S book. That said, how does picking him high (whether #1 or #5, or #10) make Mr. Davis look stupid? Draft picks flop. A whole bunch of them flop.

Why keep him? Simple. He’s an awfully young guy with a ton of talent. He’s been a screwup beyond imagination. But, at third string, his slothfulness can’t hurt team attitude, etc. like it did when everyone was painfully dreaming he would wake up.

If you can forget about the money, letting him sit there at third string hoping for a miracle isn’t that bad a deal. I think it’s super-critical to that comment that the guy is third string. That’s a totally different atmosphere for both him and the team. And – you CAN forget about the money. Big deal. Players routinely wind up getting paid too much or too little. Overpaying Russell will not keep Davis from signing anyone he wants to sign. Money has never kept Davis from signing anyone he wants.

I don’t know if I’d keep him if he doesn’t restructure, just on principle. But, he’d be crazy not to restructure. The press is having a field day talking about how Russell once said he wouldn’t restructure. Big deal. That comment doesn’t – by a long shot – mean he won’t restructure. He will restructure.

Keep the guy and see what happens. Maybe he wakes up. He wouldn’t be the first young kid to wake up and get his act together. It’s all upside, and so long as he is not poisoning the team, and if you can just hold your nose and ignore the money, there’s little downside.

  • SoCalSwamee

I’m so glad someone in the front office had the stones to say they made a mistake. JR did have a lot of chips stacked against him when he came into the league. But we should have seen a problem when the first thing he did as a raider was hold-out! QB is not our only problem but its the MOST pressing. You do not win (consistently)in the NFL without a true #1 taking snaps. Campbell is not the long term answer but he might be able to get us to 8-8?
Can’t be much worse than what were getting used to.

  • Raiders757

A happy week is starting to look lie it’s going to end sadly. Please, please get rid of Russell. The sooner, the better. It’s time to move forward without him. A great draft weekend will mean nothing as long as that turd is still on the team.

  • tonga

Davis will not be able to pull the trigger, too much $$ involved, he could have potential in davis’ eyes, davis made the pick and his super ego is involved…

Honestly guys, it doesn’t matter in the end how many QB’s show up at mini-camp. The final roster will only have 3 (4 at the very most). It is those 3 or 4 that matter. What do we care if Uncle Al wants to shell out more money to Russell, it is his cash. As long as Russell is not one of the QB’s that makes the final roster who cares? And you know if he DOES make the final cut he will be the guy holding the clipboard.
