Honestly guys, it doesn't matter in the end how many QB's show up at mini-camp. The final roster will only have 3 (4 at the very most). It is those 3 or 4 that matter. What do we care if Uncle Al wants to shell out more money to Russell, it is his cash. As long as Russell is not one of the QB's that makes the final roster who cares? And you know if he DOES make the final cut he will be the guy holding the clipboard.

A happy week is starting to look lie it's going to end sadly. Please, please get rid of Russell. The sooner, the better. It's time to move forward without him. A great draft weekend will mean nothing as long as that turd is still on the team.

I'm so glad someone in the front office had the stones to say they made a mistake. JR did have a lot of chips stacked against him when he came into the league. But we should have seen a problem when the first thing he did as a raider was hold-out! QB is not our only problem but its the MOST pressing. You do not win (consistently)in the NFL without a true #1 taking snaps. Campbell is not the long term answer but he might be able to get us to 8-8?
Can't be much worse than what were getting used to.

While cutting Russell would certainly be a defensible decision, so is keeping him an easily defended idea. Actually MAKING decisions is a bit tougher than sitting behind a keyboard and honking on and on, back seat driving.
Going on, and on, and on about his draft pick being stupid is stupid. He was a top 10 - probably a top 5 pick in EVERYBODY'S book. That said, how does picking him high (whether #1 or #5, or #10) make Mr. Davis look stupid? Draft picks flop. A whole bunch of them flop.

Why keep him? Simple. He's an awfully young guy with a ton of talent. He's been a screwup beyond imagination. But, at third string, his slothfulness can't hurt team attitude, etc. like it did when everyone was painfully dreaming he would wake up.

If you can forget about the money, letting him sit there at third string hoping for a miracle isn't that bad a deal. I think it's super-critical to that comment that the guy is third string. That's a totally different atmosphere for both him and the team. And - you CAN forget about the money. Big deal. Players routinely wind up getting paid too much or too little. Overpaying Russell will not keep Davis from signing anyone he wants to sign. Money has never kept Davis from signing anyone he wants.

I don't know if I'd keep him if he doesn't restructure, just on principle. But, he'd be crazy not to restructure. The press is having a field day talking about how Russell once said he wouldn't restructure. Big deal. That comment doesn't - by a long shot - mean he won't restructure. He will restructure.

Keep the guy and see what happens. Maybe he wakes up. He wouldn't be the first young kid to wake up and get his act together. It's all upside, and so long as he is not poisoning the team, and if you can just hold your nose and ignore the money, there's little downside.

Raider17 Says:
April 28th, 2010 at 3:09 pm

....JR needed more stability than anyone on that team. Peyton Manning has had one OC his WHOLE career. I’m still pulling for this kid. He’s a Raider!!! I thought that’s what being a fan is all about, supporting your team. I would redo his contract, but no way should we cut him. Now back to your tired fat jokes!

------

I totally agree with you Raider17, however, it has been WELL documented in the news media as well as the Raider staff themselves....Jacarcus DOES NOT WANT TO RESTRUCTURE HIS CONTRACT!!!!!!! I am getting tired of naive people saying Jacarcus needs to restructure this Al needs to restructure that, the Raiders' need to redo this....Jacarcus is selfish, he only seems to care about himself! If he had wanted to help out for the good of the team, he would have ALREADY restructured his contract!!!! SO PLEASE ENOUGH OF THE CONTRACT STUFF!!!! ITS GETTING A LITTLE ANNOYING....Now back to the tub of lard........

Russell won’t increase any competition… he’s not as good as Campbell or Gradkowski… he is a detriment.
This is bad news.

Exactly! Well said.
