Pre-minicamp notes
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, April 29th, 2010 at 4:26 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders hold their mandatory minicamp starting Friday with practices at 10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. the first two days and a single session at 11:15 a.m. on Sunday.
There is no confirmation on the signing of undrafted free agents, and as far as anyone can tell, the company line given by coach Tom Cable that JaMarcus Russell would compete in minicamp after the acquisition of Jason Campbell hasn’t changed.
Last year, when Derrick Burgess reported to minicamp but was angling for a trade, the team said he missed workouts because of the “stomach flu.”
Last season’s mandatory camp had some early warning signs of what was to come as Darrius Heyward-Bey had trouble holding the ball and ended the weekend with a hamstring strain, second-round Mike Mitchell also had a hamstring pull. Russell struggled to complete even the most routine pass routes.
During the first minicamp practice, there were 10 fumbled exchanges on center snaps.
The camps are “non-contact,” with no tackling or full-on blocking. It’s most choreography, teaching footwork and timing.
EXTRA POINTS: It appears Rock Cartwright is serious about being the new Justin Fargas. He was issued No. 25. Still no number given to Jason Campbell, who may be negotiating with Jonathan Holland for No. 17. (UPDATE: The roster on Raiders.com has been updated with Campbell wearing No. 8 ) . . . Holland is back at wide receiver after moving to cornerback last year . . . locker rooms are not open during minicamps and it remains to be seen who will and will not be made available following practice sessions. The Raiders usually bring rookie draft picks into the media room on the first day of minicamp, a practice that precludes the possibility of talking to certain veterans . . . got a mobile Twitter feed up and running Thursday and the plan is to post updates from the field . . . players began arriving Thursday for medical checks.

I know the Russell drama is taking everyone’s attention, but I’m curious, has anyone heard of any statement from the NFL network about Sapp and his recent run in with the law? Guilt has never been a factor in levying a punishment of some sort. Ex player or not, he still represents and works for the NFL. If anything, he should be held to an even higher standard. All I see is he’s out for a few months and then he’s back, with nothing said. Why the silence?

Henderson gave up by the time they played the Browns, you sign the guy for a one year contract, he will be motivated. Also we could sign him for two year contract filled with incentives, thats how you motivate a big man. Henderson is a wall when it comes to run defense and thats what this team needs.
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Raiders4eve,
My comments earlier to Bri@n, are the reasons I would like to see someone else as the DT, next to Kelly.
You have some valid points, as you stated. I just believe, if Henderson was able to dominate his gaps as he should in Jacksonville system, there would be no reason to release him.
Henderson was a dynamic duo with Stroud next to him in their Defense a few years back. Stroud signed that FA contract with Buffals and Hendeson has been exposed since. He has slowly been giving up his gaps and has shown no dominance as he once did.
So the question is, did Stroud make him the player or did Henderson just get worn down.
Finally to your point. I don’t know about you, but to say your out of the playoffs and there is no motivation to play hard, I just can’t understand that logic. Henderson should play hard for his next contract, no matter what the circumstances are of his team. That would worry me, is he motivated by his play or his lack of pride and team.
I’m off to the gym, comment back and I’ll check back later.
April 29th, 2010 at 4:33 pm
I like your optimism RR. lol
April 29th, 2010 at 4:48 pm
Henderson has a chance to be good. we all know that Russell himself was to blame for many of the sacks last year. Holding the ball so damn long made all of the o-linemen look bad, not just Henderson. Campbell, at least, is more decisive and gets the ball out quicker. The stats show that he is also much more accurate. So theoretically we should improve in these catagories, but who the hell knows what’s going to happen with these guys.
It’s always something with this team. We always seem to find a way to implode. An the only thing constant about this team is Al. Hmmm.
April 29th, 2010 at 4:49 pm
RaiderDell,
comment as per post #6.
just because Henderson once was a large player means nothing in the NotForLong. It is as simple as that.
fans fixate on player names because of what they once were or might have been whether they can still be a force or not.
wouldn’t trade the spot of a draftee or a UDFA for him.
time for the big name FAs to find a different home than Oakland where they have so often come to make one last big paycheck and nothing more.
treacherous currents, Kauai, pay heed.

I hear bro. It could be that Henderson was motivated playing along Stroud. Yet, Henderson played well all of last year with the exception of the season ending game in a cold weather against the Browns. I have seen many teams who give up the end of the year, the Broncos did it two years in a row. To base the whole notion that he doesnt play hard for a meaningless game at the end of the season is totally wrong. Another point is that when Stroud was there, henderson played the three technique position and thats why he posted good numbers. He clearly was getting double teamed as he was the best DL the Jacs had. I dont think Henderson was exposed but rather that the talent around him didnt fit Henderson capabilities. You could say Seymour did shine last year and he was exposed but yet everyone knows Seymour is a great player. Henderson playing along TK/Houston and Seymour would be a dynamic force to reckon with. I think a good contract based on incentives would be the best way to go about it.

Actually he didn’t. He was terrible last year. And the year before. That’s why they gave up on him.

I also supported the drafting and development of Russell. The play of the QB probably cost us being at least a .500 team last year. While still not good, even being .500 would be something to build on around here.

The interesting part about this FB Tonga from BYU is how old he is.
He left school for a year, maybe two.
He is 26, and about a year and a half older than Jamarcus, as a rookie.
I don’t know if he is stout enough, but he is a decent runner and catcher, played in the BYU, high-scoring spread offense. He probably is great in pass protection.

Less than a year ago, I was a proud Jamarcus Russell jersey-wearing fan.

He still believes that he is the next Elway.
He would rather waste 6 million than let him fall into enemy hands.
Al will always screw things up!
April 29th, 2010 at 5:39 pm
Something tells me if we cut Russell today Indy, New England or Denver would pick him up, let him sit for two years, watch him mature and then he would win 10+games a year for the next ten years.

stats may lie, but once again -
Albert Haynesworth
2009 – 29 solo tackles, 37 total tackles, 4 sacks
John Henderson
2009 – 26 solo tackles, 36 total tackles, 3 sacks
Tommy Kelly
2009 – 37 solo tackles, 55 total tackles, 1 sack
read ‘em and applaud kids. the Raiders already have a tackle more than equal to Fat Albert or Slacker John.

Jamarcus deserves a second chance. Perhaps he accepts lower contract, and competes for the job; then he could make the position even stronger.

JaBustus doesn’t deserve a damn thing! If he can’t get it done in 3 years, it’s not going to happen. He wasn’t some 6th round pick who may need to grow. He was the #1 pick which should be able to compete coming out of the chute. Aside from his lack of basic NFL skills, he has an attitude problem that’s not going to change. What he deserves is a kick in the ass and a overhead projector press conference showing him the friggin door. He’s worse than a locker room cancer. He’s the world’s biggest loser and we don’t need his big ass in there contaminating all the new kids coming in. He was a bad decision. AD is now “getting over it”. He can’t afford not to.

Raider fan has been attached to too many plodding players. I am very thankful that Davis/Cable removed their intense attraction to certain players. I am also thankful that the coaches weren’t blinded by one exceptional game by Gradkowski. That they realized that JaDavis made him look like a world beater. They realized that an upgrade was necessary.
With Fargas gone, now the Raiders can get Michael Bush and DMAC their carries
That Cornell Green is not a starter in this league
That Gerard Warren and Kirk Morrison were just not getting the job done
I am still concerned about the lack of a space eater up front, and that will limit the effectiveness of the defense…I also hope that Louis Murphy is allowed to compete against DHB and that they don’t “force” him the lineup to prove a point…..
Wonder if Sam Williams will have to compete for a roster spot with all theses linebackers and extra DBs

Al wants to be known as the maverick. Unpredictable, unconventional and a risk-taker. Ironically, just the opposite behavior played out in the draft and media is a buzz. You don’t hear much about the last 7 year debacle.

Something tells me if we cut Russell today Indy, New England or Denver would pick him up, let him sit for two years, watch him mature and then he would win 10+games a year for the next ten years.
====================================
You’ve made some dumb comments in your time..I mean some REALLY REALLY dumb comments…from stating JR was a “bonified NFL starting qb” to “Simms beat out Staley” to “Niners will never sign Crabtree..GUARANTEED” to “Clayton was the leading rusher the last two years (even though he never had one snap) to “Montana never showed any passion when he played” and a whole slew more…but NONE OF THEM WERE AS IGNORANT AS THIS POST.
Yes, another “OakDork Idiot-Ism’s” that will no doubt be brought back numerous times…for it’s laugh value.
Think about it…you’re saying Belichick is going to PICK UP RUSSELL, AND HIS CONTRACT? And PAY HIM TO SIT TWO MORE YEARS, THEN BELIEVE HE’S NOW GOING TO ALL OF A SUDDEN GIVE A DAMN?
You are one of the dumbest cotton balls on the planet, lol…and you just proved it.

I get the feeling that Al makes his selection off of the one big bowl game he watches.
Micheal Huff had a huge game for Texas in the national championship game years ago, and he was taken by the Raiders.

To be fair, I thought russell was the best choice for the Raiders with their first pick.
Physically he was imposing, he had great efficiency numbers in college, had a rocket arm, and filled an obvious need. My only concern was who was the better QB? Russell or Quinn?
The final bowl game, Russell was clearly superior to Quinn in all aspects. In fact I wouldn’t even have drafted quinn until a later round.
Russell was not a superstar prospect like an Aikman or Manning, but he was the best available QB that year. I had concern with the way he talked, and that it might be a problem for his team-mates to understand him in the huddle. Also he seemed too relaxed and not a firey type leader who will inspire his team, but other than that, there were no huge red flags.
The Raiders however, should have known better. They have access to the full history of JaMarcus and should have known all aspects of him. They should have employed a psycologist to probe him and determine if any of his current faults were present at the time.
They should also have mentored him, and provided him with assistance in becoming a better person and helping him grow up. Considering the overall investment, it would be a small price to pay to ensure he develops properly.
I’m not removing fault from from JaMarcus, just saying that the Raiders could have done more to ensure the first selection in that draft was a sound decision.

Yes, Russell should be the biggest bust of all time if he gets cut. It won’t all be because of his play on the field which was horrible last year, but tolerable and improving in 08. It will be because he had many chances to be successful but just didn’t care enough and ate himself out of his job.

That doesn’t mean people are distracted from it. Everyone knows Al Davis has ruined this franchise, and that the Raiders are in the midst of one of the worst free falls in pro sports history. It’s common knowledge. The news doesn’t report that the sky is blue, either. Does that mean nobody knows it? Does that mean the sky has effectively distracted humanity from the fact that its blue by leaking stories to the media? This notion that Al Davis is rope a doping the press is more delusional kool aid bombing from the “Al’s still got it” camp. If anything, it’s the other way around. Al was probably going to get rid of Russell and start anew until Clayton reported it, before he’d completely made up his mind.

Davis supporters,
Al Davis has lost it, completely. He brings nothing to the table anymore in regards to building a winning NFL franchise. Whatever games he tries to play with the press do nothing to better his team, or even make him more money. Merely getting attention does not help your brand sell. Making your brand a winner is what sells, and in pro sports, there’s only one way to do that. To win. Al Davis offers absolutely nothing to the Raiders anymore as far as financial and on the field success goes. Nothing. If you want to tell me how great Al was in the past, knock yourself out. The object of the game is to win, and from the late ’60s to the mid ’80s, Al did that, alright. More so than anyone else in the game. But today he is worthless. And all arguments to the contrary just come off as pebbles being shot via sling shot in a nuclear war. It’s a fruitless mission. But if you want to keep trying, go ahead. I can’t stop you. I can only emphasize to you just how much I’m NOT convinced.

So is JaBustus gonna have a cold or a touch of the flu tomorrow? No way AD or TC lets him do anything on the field as long as that contract hasn’t been renegotiated. The big Dummy is probably too stupid to renegotiate. He’ll just take his riches and by a couple hamburger stands.
Some fool from another team may pick him up as a novelty or payback in the case of Shannahan, just to rub AD’s nose in it. The long & short of t is JR is past history in the NFL. He WILL go down as the biggest bust ever.
Let’s just cut his ass and get him outta here. He brings nothing positive to the Raiders or their locker room. Adios azzhole.

Al loves USC almost as much as he hates Lane/Lance Kiffin. And yet, suddenly, shockingly, Kiffin is the King of USC, the last place and last job Al would’ve ever wanted Kiffin to land.
And Al knows that he was the one who–by accident–started Kiffin down this road. He knows. That can’t feel good.
Al knows that Kiffin used his battle with Al to heighten his own persona (OVERHEAD PROJECTOR!), and that there is no way Kiffin is the inheritor of Pete Carroll’s throne if Al had never hired him three years ago.
This is what Al said the day he fired Kiffin “for cause” and whipped out the overhead projector: “He conned me like he conned all you people.”

Al Davis Vindicated? Lane Kiffin Bolts for USC All the dust is settling right now and there are too many mixed messages from every party involved. I never felt Al was crazy in that press conference, and a lot of what he had to say about Lane Kiffin is evidently true.

Lane Kiffin: Amateur Coach, Professional Liar
by Michael Schulze Correspondent Written on February 13, 2009 Let’s face it. Lane Kiffin is going to need to pull off a historic turnaround to avoid becoming one of the most ridiculed coaches in college and professional sports.
Make no mistake, what Kiffin does at the University of Tennessee will impact his reputation as the coach of the Oakland Raiders. However, all Kiffin has done with his time at Tennessee is validate Al Davis’ judgment. Lane Kiffin is an amateur coach and a professional liar.
Raider fans were already far too familiar with Kiffin when he was hired by Tennessee. He quickly wore out his welcome by throwing anybody and everybody under the bus to make sure no blame fell on him. He was the Savior, and no one would listen to him. Never mind that kid’s résumé was as padded with fluff as a high schooler who joined every club at school.
He was a master recruiter. Big deal. Who wouldn’t be a master recruiter at USC? He was an offensive guru. With the talent USC has, that offense would be successful running the wishbone.
As far as his real talents? Who knows? It appears his real talent is angering his team, its fans, his superiors, and pretty much everyone else.
The Raiders offense became worse under Kiffin. Of course, that wasn’t Kiffin’s fault, since as he pointed out many times, the Raiders just didn’t have enough talented players. That didn’t sit well with the team.
Kiffin’s already broken out the blame game at Tennessee. Earlier this month, Kiffin had this to say while announcing the 19 players who committed to Tennessee: “Understand this class is far below the standards we have here and what will be here in the future.”
No word on how well those comments sit with the players who committed that day.
Kiffin’s ability as a liar knows no bounds.
Kiffin instructed a recruit to lie in the paper and to the school the recruit was supposed to be committed to. While that it isn’t unheard of, the fact that Kiffin would brag about it shows lying comes as naturally to him as blaming others for everything.
As he did in Oakland, Kiffin is now also lying to his own players. Janzen Jackson was weighing his options on where to sign. Kiffin convinced Jackson to sign with Tennessee since LSU already had two other safeties committed for the incoming class, including Darren Myles. Even though he’s a natural cornerback, Jackson wants to play safety.
Kiffin convinced both Jackson and Myles to sign with Tennessee, not telling either of them of his intent to sign the other. Now both kids are upset and feel misled because they both signed with Tennessee and are in a class with three incoming safeties.
Lying is Kiffin’s specialty. Now he has two players who already feel lied to and a whole recruiting class that has been publicly criticized by the coach as not being talented enough.
Kiffin is already dead in the water.
Now Kiffin has to face the SEC. He’s already publicly accused Florida’s coach Urban Meyer of cheating and was summarily slapped by the SEC since he was completely wrong. He’s also criticized Georgia by saying Georgia had fallen asleep in its recruiting efforts.
Expect Kiffin’s face to be rubbed in it when Florida, South Carolina, and Georgia run up the score on the Tennessee team that already hates its coach.

Usc has been irrelevant since they lost too texas in the national championship. Imo dominating the big ten in the rose is no big deal. Lane kiffin has been completely unsuccessful as a headcoach. However the one thing he has proven to be good at is recruiting, something his predecessor pete carrol was excellent at. In the world of college football recruiting year in and year out is the biggest factor when it comes to success.

Anyone want to predict the hour that the axe falls tomorrow? I’m taking the 1 – 2 PM slot.
If he doesn’t get cut, it’s because of only a few things:
1) Russell has a mystery ailment that keeps him out of practice. As Jerry said, they have a medical tomorrow. Maybe the doctor will fail to detect any heart . . .
2) He has a contract modification put in that waives any injury settlements should one occur in camp. That should be reasonable to Russell with a little speech around how he can be cut now, or he can have a chance to show that he’s worth an additional $6M gamble this year. Some clever lawyer in the Raiders camp will show him a graphic that illustrates just how many fried chickens that buys.

I would like to share this excellent blog from RaiderNation on Tony Washington. I really think this guy deserves a chance and, given his agent is Vann McElroy, the Raiders could/should be the team to offer that chance:
“I’ve advocated Abilene Christian offensive tackle Tony Washington via my blog and twitter. Washington is a registered sex offender and is required to register for life. He was convicted of having consensual sex with his 15-year-old sister, when he was 16. Seven years ago.
This is no doubt a disgusting act, for which Washington pays a price. He will carry a stigma for the rest of his life.
Below is an excerpt from the original report from SportsFanLive:
“The fact that the offense was committed as a juvenile means the odds are in his favor. According to a report published by the National Center on Sexual Behavior of Youth, adolescent sex offenders have a 5 percent to 14 percent chance of sexual re-offenses.
Dr. Fred Berlin, Associate Professor of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and founder of the Sexual Disorders Clinic, believes that unlike adult offenders, juveniles are “highly treatable” and “rarely go on to become adult offenders.”
According to Berlin, who has treated juvenile sex offenders, in some cases a young offender must simply accept the consequences of his mistakes and learn how to behave differently in order to move on. Other times, more intensive treatment, such as medication, is needed to ensure they are not a threat to others, or even to themselves.
Berlin has been an advocate for shielding juvenile sex offenders from the harsh stigma and even humiliation that accompanies placement on local and national registries.
“We want adolescent sex offenders to go on and become productive members of society, but they can’t do that if we’re constantly throwing barricades in front of them,” Berlin said.
Berlin cautions that each individual must be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. But he says the fact that Washington’s wasn’t a forced act, that there was just a one-year age difference, and that he has not had any reported run-ins with the law since, suggests that as long as Washington has had the appropriate counseling, “the likelihood is very high that he’s going to go on and live a good, responsible life.”
Washington hasn’t had any issues in the six years since the act. While some will find it hard to move past Washington’s horrible act, he has been given chances and hasn’t squandered them.
Washington now has a son and was admitted to and played for a very conservative Christian university in Abilene Christian University. I would know, it is my alma-matter. Washington isn’t a child molester, he didn’t force this act and he has the full support of his ex-coaches and the university.
A CNBC article got Washington’s agent, Vann McElroy’s thoughts on the matter, “We spent hours of our time, providing letters, testimonials from people to tell this kid’s story,” McElroy said. “It isn’t like he’s some pervert hanging around in the bushes. He’s a good kid who screwed up, who since then was accepted by the board and admitted to one of the most conservative colleges out there.”
McElroy is an ex-Raider, having played with the team in Los Angeles from 1982-1990. He is also the agent of Stanford Routt.
Both his former coaches are willing to stick their reputations on the line for Washington, “I have no fear in my mind of anything like that happening with Tony again,” said college coach Chris Thomsen. “I wouldn’t have brought him here if I had that fear. And I have no reservations about anything like that happening again in his future.”
For a guy who registered the best broad jump at the 2010 NFL Scouting Combine and didn’t allow a sack during his college career, Tony Washington deserves a shot in the NFL.
He has owned up to his mistake and faced all the consequences. In my opinion, don’t punish this kid for a mistake he made when he was 16. Al Davis, if you read this, give your ex-player a call and give Tony Washington a chance.”

USC “irrelevant”? Wow. The Davis kool aid drinkers have been known to reach, but this is bad for even them.
Ask ABC how irrelevant USC is.
Ask the companies that plan on buying spots during USC’s games this year.
Ask just about every single high school standout west of Notre Dame.
Want to talk about irrelevant, Tennessee is a lot closer to it than USC. And Kiffin’s employer before that? Well, thanks to Al Davis, they’re probably the closest thing the NFL has to an irrelevant team.
Kiffin is riding high, and you know it. USC is one of college football’s crown jewels, and you know it. Kiffin got the last laugh in a major way against Al by getting the USC job, and you know it.

Exactly the same thing???? Campbell completed 65% of his passes while getting sacked like 48 times with a bad OL. Campbell completed his season while everyone was trying to replace him all year long. Russell was given the keys in camp and even though he was terrible was not replaced until week 9. This is then kind of JR apologist crap that drives me crazy. Please face reality the guy sucks!!!! Look at game replays of last season – he is absolutly a horrendous QB. He looks lost out there. Yes he has a strong arm but that is about 10% of what needs to be considered here.
This is a waste of 6 more million that could be used to sign a FA DT or interior OL that will be wasted if we don’t cut him. He is the type of person that will fake an injury to get the extra 6 million.

As the last remaining Raider fan still supporting JRuss…hoping today is a new day for the kid. Here’s to JRuss going out on the field this mini camp and proving that one should not give up on a young 24 year QB for having 1 horrible season(One in which he played behind a terrible O-line nad had two rookiw receiver starting).
Im curious, has there ever been a team in the NFL that started 2 rookie wide receivers? If so, I would be curious as to how the QB of that team performed. I’m willing to bet that there has never been an NFL team that started 2 rooks at wideout for the first 7-8 games.

You are not the last Raider fan. There are plenty of them out there. I “love” the two rookie wR excuses. Did you watch the games? He was locking down on WRs – even the analysts on TV were showing this. He was not reading a progression and hiding his intentions like even a below average NFL QB can do. He could of had Moss and Owens out there. I mean they guy could not complete a screen pass! Have not we suffered enough with this dope. He has set back the franchise for 3 years with his nonsense.
Enough is enough! AD please surprise me again this offseason and cut the guy already!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He can be cut between now and the begining of the season but everytime he is on the field he is an injury risk because if he is hurt he gets an the 6 million. Plus he is a huge distraction considering his poor performance.

YOu call it an excuse, but seriously Im curious, has it ever happened in the NFL before? Having 2 rooks at wideout start for the first 7-8 games? If it has, what was that teams record? How did the QB perform. I agree with all of the flaws you stated JRuss showed last year(locking onto primary receiver-not reading progressions-pocket awareness). All of thos flaws are correctable. And don’t give me if he hasn’t learn in his first 3 years he’ll never learn crap. Thats bull. He’s only 24 and has plenty of time to improve on his game.
I will never bring up starting 2 rooks at wideout again if someone can show me if its happened before and that team had success. If it has never happened before, then that makes it a valid excuse.

re: cutting Russell now or at final cuts (53 man roster)
here’s how I look at it…
1. he’s been rather durable in his first 3 NFL seasons and most off-season activity is non-contact
2. we’ve paid him LOADS of money for the past 3 seasons with nothing in return. make him work an extra 4 months!
3. if it truly is an open competition, let him compete. if he’s not one fo the Top 3 QB’s – let him loose (Campbell, Gradkowski & Frye were all better than him last year)
4. it’s not my money. I don’t care what Al Davis dishes out, as long as we start winning football games. If next year is uncapped, cut him then. If it’s this year only, then Davis has a tough decision to make (easy for us fans!). I wouldn’t care if Al Davis went on a spending spree this offseason, but when we have a cap in place it affects our ability to make a run at other players who might help us achieve our goals

Good post @193! Agree with all 4 points..especially the money issue. It amazes me how people talk about cap money and how much we pay a player..how much a player makes. Who cares? Its not our money, its big AL’s. AL had deep pockets and always overpays players. I can see if the extra 6 million a player make would prevent us from signing some FA. But thats not the case. If Al really wants a player, he has the dough to go get em.
This mini-camp and pre season camp should be very interesting!
April 30th, 2010 at 6:48 am

If Al can get him to renegotiate his contract to protect against injury losses — and if his lethargy is not infectious to the team — then give him the chance to make the other QBs look stellar.
I’m sure Southwick is telling JR’s agent to take a pay cut, and in return get one last chance at putting good film together to seduce a new team/sucker.

I don’t want to hear anything about Jason Campbell splitting reps with Russell.
Russell was third string last year and unless he’s drastically improved this offseason and Bruce & Charlie haven’t – he’s still 3rd string (well, maybe 4th or 5th now with Campbell & Boller in the mix)
I would like to see JR light it up late in preseason games throwing to Bodiford, Hubbard, Figurs, Watkins, Miller and that undrafted kid. with Barnes, Pears, Rodd, Parsons & Morris protecting him

I know everyone is over the draft, but I’m still stoked with the McClain pick, found a nice article biut him from last season:
from espn.com:
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — If the Big Defensive Coordinator in the Sky wanted to sculpt the modern middle linebacker, No. 3 Alabama junior Rolando McClain just may be his prototype: He is 6-foot-4, 258 pounds, and the way his cable-like limbs are connected by a strong torso, he could be mistaken for a small forward. Senior cornerback Javier Arenas described what it’s like as a tackler when McClain arrives to finish off the guy with the ball.
When Rolando McClain sizes up a running back, that ball carrier is going to feel the impact.
“You black out for a second,” Arenas said, “and try to figure out what truck hit you. You see him walking away. OK, it’s him.”
Crimson Tide H-back Preston Dial makes room for Heisman candidate Mark Ingram. Dial knows how to open holes. It is his station in life to block McClain three days a week. He’s considering an easier line of work, like being Brock Lesnar’s sparring partner.
“Not only are his legs real strong,” Dial said of McClain, “but he’s so physical with his hands in shedding blockers. He never stays blocked. You have to stop the linebacker’s charge and switch his momentum. He’s so violent when he comes and meets you in the hole, all you hope for is a stalemate. Instead of the running back picking his hole, Ro makes the decision for the running back which way he is going to go.”
Yet McClain’s physical skills are not the main reason he leads one of the nation’s best defenses with 57 tackles. His ability to deliver a blow isn’t why he’s a semifinalist for the Lombardi Award.
There are moments on the practice field when McClain takes a play off. That’s not to say that McClain would ever line up and not give everything he can possibly give, whether it’s Saturday in Bryant-Denny Stadium against No. 9 LSU, Tuesday on the practice field or a July Wednesday in a 7-on-7 drill. McClain would take his uniform off before he would take a play off.
But there are times in practice when the coaches take McClain out of a drill to give a younger guy some work. McClain takes the play off. On those occasions, more often than not, McClain will not trot over to the sideline, grab a water bottle and chat up his teammates. McClain will walk to the middle of the field to stand alongside head coach Nick Saban.
Saban will watch the drill with his arms crossed. McClain will watch the drill with his arms crossed.
When McClain, consciously or not, adopts Saban’s posture, it is physical confirmation of what everyone within Alabama football already understands. Ro McClain is Nick Saban writ large — and fast and explosive. “Coach on the field” may be a cliché. With McClain, it fits. He may have a football-hot body but McClain is loved by his coaches and his teammates for his mind.
“It’s unbelievable how much he understands the game,” fellow linebacker Cory Reamer said. “The second part is how well he knows the defense. He really knows what Coach would like to go to in the situations we get it and he really does a good job communicating it.”
On offense, when quarterback Greg McElroy calls an audible, the center changes the blocking scheme for the offensive line, and the backs and wide receivers signal one another their changes. On defense, when McClain calls an audible, he makes the changes for the defensive linemen, the secondary and the linebackers.
“Some guys understand their position. But I would venture to guess Ro knows what every player is supposed to do on every play on defense.”
– Alabama coach Nick Saban
Clemson defensive coordinator Kevin Steele, who held that position at Alabama the previous two seasons, has coached linebackers on the major college level and in the NFL for more than two decades.
“He’s got that gift of being able to analytically process information and react to it as fast as any guy I’ve ever been around,” Steele said. “There are a lot of ways to teach players — in the classroom, on the board, with video, practice reps. Some guys have to do it full speed. You can pass Rolando in the hall and say, ‘In this formation, in this defense we need to do this,’ and it’s done.
“I’ve never coached but two like that,” Steele said. “One of them was Sam Mills, who played 12 years in the NFL and was All-Pro several times. And Rolando.”
Sitting at his desk on a recent hectic, game-planning Monday, Saban paused to explain what makes McClain’s grasp of defense different from most players. If his defensive playbook were a math text, it would be calculus. McClain knows it like a Tuscaloosa first-grader knows that two plus two equals 3rd-and-6.
“Some guys understand their position,” Saban said. “But I would venture to guess Ro knows what every player is supposed to do on every play on defense, and he knows like I know who didn’t do right, and when he didn’t do right, sometimes immediately.”
Asked to define McClain’s football intelligence for an audience that hasn’t played, Saban used baseball.
“You can teach a hitter where the strike zone is,” Saban said. “You can even teach him how to swing a bat. But you really can’t teach him [how to judge] a ball or a strike from the time it leaves the pitcher’s hand until it gets to home plate. The guy’s got to figure that out on his own and make an” — Saban snapped his fingers — “almost athletic intuition decision, that this is a good pitch to hit.
“Even though we’re not playing baseball, from a football-playing standpoint, Ro would be … ” Saban thought for a second.
“Albert Pujols?”
It would be a great story to say that McClain sought out Saban, that he came to Tuscaloosa from his hometown of Decatur, Ala., to scratch an intellectual itch. It would be a great story. It would be fiction.
“When I came here, he told me if I wanted to play my freshman year, I had to learn the defense,” McClain said. He began to laugh. “I wanted to play.”
That they came together at all is a happy accident. McClain committed to Alabama to play for Saban’s predecessor, Mike Shula. All McClain knew about Saban was that he had won a national championship at LSU. Saban knew McClain had been one of the nation’s top high school linebackers at Decatur High. But he didn’t get to know him until the freshmen reported to campus in the summer of 2007.
Saban met a young man ready to compete. As McClain helped lead Decatur High to the state Final Four in basketball, he also continued working out for football.
“He understood when he committed to Alabama that, ‘Hey, I have a chance to play early,’” Decatur High head football coach Jere Adcock said. “He and Caleb Thomas, who’s a guard at UAB now, would come up here after basketball practice and lift weights.”
Adcock said he has had players who pushed themselves as hard as McClain. “They’re undersized,” he said. “To see a kid of that size and that ability push himself to that level is why he has elevated himself.”
McClain beat out a returning starter, sophomore Prince Hall, and started the opener as a true freshman. The season had its bumps. McClain started eight games. Saban, who drives his players and coaches as hard as he drives himself, learned not to yell at McClain.
“It didn’t do any good,” Saban said. He recognizes the obsession.
“I’m so competitive,” McClain said. “I want to be the best at everything I do. Growing up, I wanted to be the smartest, wanted to be the best swimmer, whatever it was we were doing. Against everybody, anything I did. Whether it was in the classroom or whatever, I always wanted to be the best. I’m hard on myself. I know I’m not perfect and I know I’m never going to be perfect. At the same time, I can always work and be better because I want to get there. Coach says I’m too much of a perfectionist.”
If Nick Saban thinks you’re too much of a perfectionist, you might think about taking it down a notch. When McClain comes off the field distraught after missing a tackle, Saban is the one who tells him to let it go.
Saban wouldn’t have McClain any other way.
“That’s a tremendous asset, as long as you can keep channeling it in the right direction,” Saban said.
In McClain’s case, that direction is usually toward the line of scrimmage with ill will on his mind.

I wouldn’t care if Al Davis went on a spending spree this offseason, but when we have a cap in place it affects our ability to make a run at other players who might help us achieve our goals

The interesting thing about the Russell saga is Coach Cable has been saying at every opportunity that Russell has been at the facility working on his game and working with his team mates. Even last weekend, he reiterated the same thing.
From that other guy’s blog …
“Quarterback JaMarcus Russell has been working out at the Raiders facility all week and is expected to be at the team’s minicamp today.”

i’m not surprised that Jason Campbell is making an early attempt to connect with his coaches & teammates. thats the way it should be.

*******************************************************
===============================================
The last team to start two rookie receivers were the 2000 Cinny Bungholes I believe. That was the “Heistman” Peter Warrick/Dugan receiving tandem QB’d by Akili Smith. Smith regressed badlythat year completing less than 50% of his passes, the “Heistman” had a decent season as a rookie WR. The team finished 4-12. So if anything it confirms your post.
On an interesting note, it looks like Raheem Morris the HC of Tampon Bay is going with the Al DAvis 2 rookie WR’s this year. Might as well get the pain out of the way the theory goes.

Hear me out: The Browns should sign JaMarcus Russell
by Bernie19Kosar on
“Trust me, I thought the same thing you are thinking right now.
No way freaking way do I want JaMarcus Russell as a Brown, unless it is as a LT. But I couldn’t shake it the thought of it. Should the Browns take a chance on signing the greatest draft bust of all time?
Yep, and here is how I got here.
First of all, why did JaMarcus fail in Oakland?
I am not going to make excuses for his lack of conditioning and overall apathy towards his job as a NFL quarterback. That is troublesome. Could he fix this? Sure, and he wouldn’t be the first QB to need a fresh start in order to start taking his job seriously. Hell, Brett Favre couldn’t stop partying and drinking in Atlanta. He needed someone to turn his career around. See where I am headed?
I am not expecting JaMarcus to show up at training camp at 225lbs, but I think that we may see a young kid who got a cold dose of reality. Oakland is going to cut him and he is going to have to go begging for a job in the NFL. He will be on his last chance. I have a hunch that could be what wakes JaMarcus up.
If he looks at this situation and doesn’t get his fat ass in shape, then he will be out of the NFL in under two seasons.
As for the rest of his situation, I see it like this; It wasn’t all his fault.
Peyton Manning had Marvin Harrison and Edge.
Carson Palmer had Chad Ochocinco and TJ Houshyourmama.
Eli Manning had Plaxico Burress and Tiki Barber.
JaMarcus Russell had Darren McFadden and DHB.
What number one pick got a complete shaft job?
What about his offensive line?
His LT’s have been Barry Sims, Kwame Harris and Mario Henderson.
His LG’s has been Robert Gallery
His C’s have been Jereme Newberry, Jake Grove, Samson Satele
His RG has been Cooper Carlise
His RT’s have Paul McQuistan, Cornell Green
In three seasons he has had 10 different starting offensive lineman. Not only have the been 10 different guys, but for the most part, they suck. So no weapons, no offensive line and the QB sucks. Chicken or the egg? Of course JaMarcus failed. He was in freaking Oakland. Who has done anything there since Rich Gannon? What Raider, other than Nnamdi, has done anything in Oakland? Are we really going to blame Russell for playing with garbage around him? Did his back-ups do that much better than him?
What about the coaching that Russell has played under?
Russell has never had any coaching. His offensive coordinators have been Greg Knapp and Ted Tollner. Not exactly the greatest passing minds there. Two offensive coordinators in three seasons? How is that even remotely fair to him? So a consistently fluctuating coaching staff and a horrendous supporting staff.
Of course, maybe he just sucks. Good thing he will be cheap.
Why should the Browns sign him?
•Mike Freakin’ Holmgren. I know he said that he is no longer a coach. But wouldn’t this be his greatest test? Wouldn’t this be the capper on a HOF career? He could take Russell under his wing for two years, teach him how to play the position the correct way. Actually try and give this kid a shot.
•You are probably saying, “Hey moron, we already drafted a QB”. I have already gone over why expecting anything out of a QB drafted after the first round is a really bad idea. Colt McCoy may be the best QB ever to pick up a football {closes eyes and prays}, but the odds are that he is going to be nothing special. Russell would give the Browns a plan B. Best case scenario, Russell lights up preseason and actually makes a trade market for himself. We are talking about a league where Tyler Thigpen was traded for a draft pick.
•Signing Russell would give the Browns four QB’s on the roster. Even with the emergency roster spot of the third QB, carrying four QB’s is a crazy thought. Good thing the Browns have a QB on the roster that can play WR. Let Wallace play some WR while he is the back-up. Sure it is a gamble, but its not like we are really going to be winning very many games this season.
•No one has ever doubted Russell’s tools. He has an arm that could be the best ever to be on a NFL field. He has the frame (minus the tonnage) that GM’s dream of. He struggled at times at LSU, but his junior season was on par with Jimmy Clausen’s junior season. Shouldn’t that count for something? He has the talent, he is just waiting for someone to help him find it.
•JaMarcus Russell is one month older than Colt McCoy. That’s it. 25 days. Russell is still a baby. We have no idea what kind of QB Russell can be. He still has 12 years left in this league. Are you willing to put the nail in his coffin before his 25th birthday? Look at how many QB’s struggle early in their careers just to have the light bulb go on later on in their careers? Wouldn’t Holmgren be the best person to try?
•Who cares if he shows up lazy and fat? If he comes in and keeps up with the slack ass ways, cut him. Send him packing. Adios. No skin off our back. We go into the season with Delhomme, Wallace and McCoy. You could even structure his contract in a manner that he doesn’t get paid unless he makes the team. No pressure on the Browns, make JaMarcus earn it. It would give us a good idea on whether or not he plans on busting it.
I’m not saying that it would be a good signing. It could be a Maurice Clarett like blow-up. But the talent of Russell and the genius of Holmgren is, in my opinion, to powerful of a possible combination to pass up.
What do you think Brown fans? You in on Russell?”

It’s a GREAT day to be a Raiders fan! Isn’t it?
JaMarcus will either re-do his contract in a hurry, or he’ll be gone in a hurry. Do NOT be surprised if JaMarcus is on the roster on Monday. Now way he’s a backup for $9+ Mil this year…but quite possible if he makes a smaller salary with a smaller bonus than the one he was expecting.
JaMarcus on the “cheap” is worth hanging onto…he may have some fight in him yet. My money’s on the team getting the vibe they want from Campbell and Grads…the vibe a real pro QB brings with him. If so, and JaMarcus hasn’t grown in a hurry (and shrunk!), he’ll be getting his $3 Mil walking papers pretty quickly.
McClain’s going to excite this Defense — he’s going to excite everybody!
Johnny Holland should’ve never been moved to DB, he’s as good as JLH. And JLH better get it in gear in a hurry this year, because more than Holland want his job.
What a great weekend!

Raider O, here is some information on law you are crying about.
It simply adopts current federal law as state law. It does not allow racial profiling, it only allows a search into a person’s immigration status when there has been contact by law enforcement with the individual in the course of investigation a crime or trafic stop. Yes, if a cop sees you driving with your top down and your keffiyeh blowing in the wind and you are going 56 in a 55 they can pull you over and deport your ass…I LOVE IT! Here is the info:
“Understanding Arizona’s Immigration Law
Source – Center for Immigration Studies :
The new law recently signed by the governor of Arizona, SB 1070, makes it a state crime to violate some federal immigration statutes. While the law is extremely popular in the state, with 70 percent of Arizona voters approving of it and just 23 percent opposed, it has raised controversy. Below is a brief summary of the relevant information on illegal immigration in Arizona, followed by a short analysis of SB 1070’s major provisions.
Illegal immigration in Arizona:
•The federal government estimated that Arizona had one of the fastest growing illegal immigrant populations in the country, increasing from 330,000 in 2000 to 560,000 by 2008.1
•Arizona has adopted other laws to deter the settlement of illegal immigrants in the state in recent years. The federal government estimates that the illegal immigrant population dropped by 18 percent in the state from 2008 to 2009, compared to a 7 percent drop for the nation as a whole.2 This may be evidence that the state enforcement efforts are having an impact.
•The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office has found that 22 percent of felonies in the county are committed by illegal immigrants.3 Illegal immigrants are estimated to be 10 percent of the county’s adult population.4
•Analysis of data from State Criminal Alien Assistance Program showed that illegal immigrants were 11 percent of the state’s prison population. Illegal immigrants were estimated to be 8 percent of state’s adult population at the time of the analysis.5
•Approximately 17 percent of those arrested by the Border Patrol in its Tucson Sector have criminal records in the United States.6
•The issue of illegal immigration and crime is very difficult to measure, and while in Arizona there is evidence that illegal immigrants are committing a disproportionate share of crime, it is not clear this is the case nationally.7
•In 2007, the Center for Immigration Studies estimated that 12 percent of workers in the Arizona are illegal immigrants.8
•In 2007, the Center estimated that illegal immigrants and their U.S.-born children (under 18) comprise one-fifth of those in the state living in poverty, one-third of those without health insurance, and one out of six students in the state’s schools.9
•In 2007, the Center estimated that one-third of households headed by illegal immigrants in Arizona used at least one major welfare program, primarily food-assistance programs or Medicaid. Benefits were typically received on behalf of U.S.-born children.10
•The new law (SB 1070) is extremely popular among Arizona voters. A Rasmussen poll found that 70 percent of voters approve of the new bill, and just 23 percent oppose it.11
Among the new law’s provisions:
•The new Arizona law mirrors federal law, which already requires aliens (non-citizens) to register and carry their documents with them (8 USC 1304(e) and 8 USC 1306(a)). The new Arizona law simply states that violating federal immigration law is now a state crime as well. Because illegal immigrants are by definition in violation of federal immigration laws, they can now be arrested by local law enforcement in Arizona.
•The law is designed to avoid the legal pitfall of “pre-emption,” which means a state can’t adopt laws that conflict with federal laws. By making what is a federal violation also a state violation, the Arizona law avoids this problem.
•The law only allows police to ask about immigration status in the normal course of “lawful contact” with a person, such as a traffic stop or if they have committed a crime.
•Estimates from the federal government indicate that more than 80 percent of illegal immigrants come from Latin America.12 Thus, there is concern that police may target only Hispanics for enforcement.
•Before asking a person about immigration status, law enforcement officials are required by the law to have “reasonable suspicion” that a person is an illegal immigrant. The concept of “reasonable suspicion” is well established by court rulings. Since Arizona does not issue driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants, having a valid license creates a presumption of legal status. Examples of reasonable suspicion include:
◦A driver stopped for a traffic violation has no license, or record of a driver’s license or other form of federal or state identification.
◦A police officer observes someone buying fraudulent identity documents or crossing the border illegally.
◦A police officer recognizes a gang member back on the street who he knows has been previously deported by the federal government.
•The law specifically states that police, “may not solely consider race, color or national origin” when implementing SB 1070.
•When Arizona’s governor signed the new law, she also issued an executive order requiring the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board to provide local police with additional training on what does and what does not constitute “reasonable suspicion.”13″

We get the begining of the soap opera that is an Oakland Raiders season. A couple of sweet game 6’s tonight, going to see Joel McHale at the Mandalay, and than a closed-circuit viewing party for the fight tomorrow.

*******************************************************
Preciate the info Seymour…just as I thought. The guy was set up to fail. If the Bucs do start two rooks at wideout, expect their young QB Josh Freeman to regress from the progress he showed late last year.
Post 268 is telling! Hey hate JRuss all you want. There are players in the league and on the Raiders that I just do not support no matter what they do(Thats any player that plays for the Donks…players like Fargas and Gradkowski..just cant get behind them). So if Jerry reports that JRuss has slimmed down and looks sharp..completing all of the passes he missed on last camp, people are still going to hate on him. Thats cool…but damn the kid is only a few months older than Colt McCoy??He’s still young…he can turn this around.
I for one thinks if given a fair chance by the coaching staff, he will out perform every QB on our roster..including Campbell. Campbell will have to adjust to a new team and once again…a new offense. If Russell put in the work this off-season, he will be the best QB in camp.

I’ve seen a lot of statistics showing that what illegal immigrants pay in taxes and social sec without getting social sec benefits outweighs the costs taxpayers inccur for schooling of immigrant children and emergency room visits which is a major reason why states don’t enforce already in place strict immigration laws. The law will be struck down for being unconstitutional as it was just a political ploy to satisfy consertative constituents who applaud such a hard-line stance. GO RAIDERS!

Tyrone: No! Shut up! I will recite my latest poem that I wrote about you bougie white trash scum. It’s called “I Hate White People” by Tyrone Green.
I hate the sunlight and I hate the night.
I hate white people because they is white.
Their hair is wavy, their lips is thin,
But worse than white women, I hate white men.

Jhill,
I am in NO WAY condoning slavery. However, the slave trade was in full force WAY before any white europeans put the first African on a boat. The whites didn’t go a-conquering and make slaves, they bought the slaves from African tribes who conquered and enslaved their neighbors. The whole concept is screwed up and I am definitely not in favor of it, but one has to admit that it wasn’t just white people who were responsible for black slaves being here in the U.S.
The TREATMENT of the slaves when they got here: All whitey’s fault. The slaves being slaves in the first place: That’s on the people who conquered and enslaved them… other African tribes. That practice goes back to LONG before the first European boats landed in Africa.

“The Growing Racism in Denmark
Something Rotten in Denmark?
Submitted by David A (Denmark), Dec 17, 2005 at 04:30
I myself am a Jew. My mother is Danish, Jewish of origin, 4th generation immigrant from Russia/Poland. My father is an Israeli, Yemenite Jew of origin. I’m quite dark skinned, and as so could go for being an Arab (Muslim).
The last couple of years I personally have felt how racism can strike you like a sledgehammer. I am constantly reminded that I’m different, by comments from people. Few days ago a lady looked at me in the street a said to me “you are all the same”, not knowing that I was Jewish.
So I quite understand the frustration of Muslims in Denmark. It is obvious that they are not welcome. Or you may say that many Danes judge people by their color, as seen in my example. It is becoming more and more acceptable both among Danish politicians and by the public, to make statements that are thoroughly encompassed by racistic means.
I believe that if this will continue and racism towards Muslims or for that sake any dark skinned groups in this country, it could create such radicalism, both among Danes but also among Muslims, that could lead to heavy violence. This is surely not the way to integrate people, but a way to create segregation, and undermine the present welfare state. The Danish politicians should think about that. As a Jew and in my case dark skinned person, I therefore truly understand what it means to be stigmatized, and considered to be “like all of them”, and can understand why deep hate are created among different cultural groups, and what this can do to a society, Danes should think about that.”

What’s good, Nation. The JaWhale watch continues…I assume they will make him a proposition- either take a pay cut (which his agent should advise him to, since he wouldn’t get anything more than the league minimum if another team were to pick him up, yet somehow the Raiders would still be willing to give him a little more than that) or take a hike (and be assured of the league minimum). Hopefully we will know more by this afternoon.

I hate the concept of racial profiling and think it’s B.S. that they will ask someone who looks Mexican for their documentation when they stop them for speeding, but won’t check the white guy to make sure he isn’t an illegal Austrian immigrant. However, I can KIND OF see their point… the illegal immigration problem is mostly caused by illegal hispanic immigrants, not people of other races. I doubt that they’ll be checking docs for chinese people at traffic stops, so while it IS profiling, it’s profiling targeted at a particular problem.
If a white guy has raped a woman in my neighborhood and he’s being searched for… and the cops see me walking the streets at night and stop me for I.D. and ask me why I’m walkin around at night, I wouldn’t consider that to be racial profiling, but it is… it’s just racial profiling with a purpose to try to solve a crime or prevent more crime… same as asking a hispanic for their docs. I would be pissed that I got stopped, but that’s better than stopping NO ONE and letting the rapist roam free without even trying to stop him.
Stopping every black guy you see because you think he might be a criminal, with no evidence: BAD racial profiling.
Asking for docs from every hispanic who has been stopped for something else already: Not really that bad of an idea in a state where illegal mexican immigration is a HUGE problem. It’s not like they’re randomly stopping people… yet. The idea is good, the problem is that it will be abused and will turn into a major ordeal.
As a former citizen of Maricopa County, I know… Joe Arpaio is a moron, a racist, a dirty, rotten crook, and needs to be removed from office ASAP.

That bastard of an ass-hole didn’t understand that it violates the fourth amendment to the U.S. Constitution. He is the worst law-enforcement official in the country and should be removed from office, then handed over to the public to be dealt with.
He has also embezzled, lied, stolen, and generally screwed over the county for YEARS… and the morons keep re-electing him because he’s “tough on crime.” Putting guys in pink boxers and making them camp out in 120 degree heat isn’t being tough on crime, it’s being a dick. Russell inspires ill-will in Oakland By Mark Fainaru-Wada ESPN
It’s the parking lot of the Oakland Coliseum, and the Raiders have lost again. Badly. A 23-3 home loss to the hated Denver Broncos on an unseasonably warm, late September afternoon. Raider Nation is trudging out of the stadium in a too-familiar scene, and one player’s performance overshadows all others.
The fans have just witnessed quarterback JaMarcus Russell pass for 61 yards, throw two interceptions and tally a meager 22.6 passer rating. So, in the aftermath, one Raiders devotee unburdens himself of his No. 2 Russell jersey, douses it with lighter fluid and burns it in effigy. Soon, 25 to 30 fans have gathered around, cheering wildly and shouting epithets.
“Burn it!”
“F— JaMarcus Russell!”
“You piece of s—!”
“You punk!”
“You’re a piece of garbage!”
The last rites of Russell finally are halted when a police officer stomps out the flaming jersey, eliciting a chorus of disapproval from the frothing mass.
Don Staben Jr., a 28-year-old lifelong Raiders fan, sees the commotion as it is just beginning, pulls out his cell phone and records the act for YouTube posterity.
“I just happened to be in the right place at the right time,” recounted Staben Jr., a union plumber who lives in Antioch, about 40 miles northeast of the Coliseum. Staben said the only thing that bothered him about the scene was that it was a Raiders jersey being torched. “Being a Raiders fan, I don’t like to see our memorabilia getting burnt.”
Did it seem at all excessive?
“No, it didn’t strike me as excessive,” Staben said. “In the context of that game, you had to have been there or at least seen the game to understand the way he was perceived on that particular day.”
There’s hatred, and then there’s sports hatred, a bastardized version that is largely accepted as harmless because, well, you know, fans will be fans. The sports zealot is readily dismissed as an amusing, face-painted, screeching sort who’s merely indulging his passions to escape the real world.
There are either glorious heroes or bitter enemies, with little room for nuance.
But there’s something about how Russell has engendered such loathing within Raider Nation that it has become almost frightening to watch. So embittered is the fan base at this point that the team’s recent trade for former Washington Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell — which could lead to the release of Russell — has to be viewed not only as a possible upgrade for the team but also as a potential escape from hell for Russell.
Randy Novelli was at that same Broncos game, toting along his video camera. A local, part-time disc jockey and radio host who goes by the name DJ Kazzeo, Novelli had decided to record what random fans thought of Russell and then share their responses through YouTube. Like a lot of the faithful, Novelli had harbored huge hopes that, after the Raiders made Russell the No. 1 overall pick of the NFL draft in 2007, the franchise finally would emerge from a sustained bout of badness.
Raiders fans haven’t exactly been enthralled with quarterback JaMarcus Russell.
The Raiders were coming off a 2-14 season and had four consecutive years of at least 11 losses when they chose Russell out of LSU. After a prolonged holdout, the 6-foot-6, ever-widening quarterback (he was listed at 252 pounds in college but arrived in Oakland reportedly pushing 270) signed a six-year, $61 million contract — $32 million of which was guaranteed. In December, when Russell entered his first game of what would be a 4-12 season, he received a standing ovation from Raider Nation.
Weak in many areas, the Raiders finished the 2008 season 5-11, with Russell as the starter. And though he had a respectable year, the No. 1 draft choice and self-described “chosen one” was becoming a lightning rod. He had weight and work ethic issues, and to many fans and teammates, he appeared neither to care nor feel he bore any responsibility for the team’s continued woefulness.
Russell declined to be interviewed for this story but issued a statement through his agent acknowledging he has areas to improve upon and saying he is working to get better.
By September of last season, the 38-year-old Novelli and seemingly every other Raiders disciple had turned on Russell. Novelli thought it would be enlightening to solicit opinions about Russell at the stadium. And so, as a sea of Raiders fans exited the Coliseum following the Denver loss, he simply pointed his video camera and asked, over and over again, “What do you think of Russell?”
Oakland police officer: “I think they should have got Michael Vick.”
Smiling fan, making peace sign, then changing tune when asked question: “He sucks, that guy is bad.”
Very large, face-painted fan, wearing sombrero: “F— Russell.”
Random guy, with arm around his girlfriend: “Sucks, sucks, sucks.”
Ultimately, Novelli turned the camera on himself and said, “There you have it, I proved my point: JaMarcus Russell, you f—ing suck!”
Novelli didn’t catch the burning of the jersey in the parking lot, but he did see it on YouTube. Did it seem excessive?
“I guess I would have to liken it to Al Qaeda burning American flags. They hate us and we as Raider fans hate JaMarcus,” Novelli said, laughing.
Two and a half months later, on the other side of the country, about a half-dozen guys gathered in the basement of Dan Vassalluzzo’s New Jersey home. The group of Raiders faithful once consisted of 25 to 30 members who would convene every football Sunday in a local bar that, despite being in the heart of Eagles country, set aside a back corner for the gang in silver and black.
By 2009, though, thanks to marriages, kids and consistent ineptness by their beloved Raiders, the group had dwindled to maybe six die-hards, meeting on game days at Vassalluzzo’s pad. Their 35-year-old host, a Raiders fan since childhood, has two tattoos honoring his team and a roomful of memorabilia: figurines, painted plates, flags, banners, a model team plane and several bobbleheads.
On Dec. 13, the New Jersey branch of Raider Nation came together in the basement to watch its team play the Redskins. Oakland, with Russell finally benched in favor of Bruce Gradkowski, had won two of its three previous games and fans had embraced not just Gradkowski but anybody other than Russell.
At the half, the Raiders trailed just 17-10, and hope persisted. But Gradkowski left the game with a knee injury, was replaced by Russell, and that was the end. In the second half, Oakland’s offense gained just 39 yards, and the Redskins won 34-13. Russell finished 10-of-16 for 74 yards, with one interception. He was sacked six times.
Afterward, admittedly alcohol addled, the New Jersey bunch turned on Russell.
“All at once, we looked at the bobblehead, and it was just smiling at us,” said 31-year-old Brett Triantafillou, one of the die-hards. “We grabbed it and ran out back. At first we were gonna just stomp it, but we thought fire would be better.”
Triantafillou recorded the scene on his cell phone, and, using a can of bug spray as an igniter, the Russell bobblehead was set ablaze.
Over raucous laughter in the background, the men derided Russell.
“Light him up!”
“JaMarcus, you f—ing suck!”
“Your goddamned f—ing overpaid contract!”
“Burn baby burn!”
Asked months later whether the group might have gone too far, Triantafillou, a freelance videographer, said, “We figured there’s worse things on the Internet. If you take it so seriously, there’s something wrong with you. It’s football. It’s not like we were gonna go across the country and find the guy.”
There are 333 members on the JaMarcus Russell Sucks Facebook page. There is a JaMarcus Russell Sucks blog. There are thousands of pages that reference Russell in the same breath as Ryan Leaf, arguably the biggest bust in NFL history.
“He’s almost despised here,” said Gary Peterson, a columnist with the Bay Area News Group who has covered sports in the area for 31 years — from the legendary Bill Walsh San Francisco 49ers teams to the consistently bad Raiders teams of the past seven seasons.
Peterson has watched Russell’s tenure in Oakland devolve into the Theater of the Absurd. In early March, as homage to Tiger Woods’ reported stint in sex rehab, Peterson made a joking reference at the end of a column that Russell had entered a clinic for treatment of “lethargy addiction.”
Within hours, a local TV station reported Russell’s alleged affliction as fact, and soon the Internet was awash with stories about the quarterback’s malady. Peterson had picked the word lethargy after turning to dictionary.com in an effort to ensure he selected just the right term. How did “lethargy” speak to him about Russell?
“Basically everything you would characterize his career as being,” he said. “A lack of will, a lack of energy, just someone who won’t apply himself.”
Peterson said that feeling persisted not just among fans but also throughout much of the organization.
“Oh, you get that message all the time,” he said. “It’s either inside the locker room or out, it’s either off the record or spoken in code, but the unrelenting message is: He does not work hard at it and he’s not fully invested in the outcome, and if the check’s cashing, he’s happy.”
And therein, Peterson says, lies the root of the extreme bitterness directed at Russell by Raider Nation. It’s not just that the team has had three more double-digit losing seasons, making it seven in a row for the organization with a self-proclaimed “Commitment to Excellence.” Nor is it just that he doesn’t seem to be getting better. Or even that he seems to fumble with ridiculous regularity.
No, it’s the apparent aloofness — real or imagined — that stands out.
“I think people are angry that he doesn’t seem to get it,” Peterson said. “… Maybe he doesn’t understand that he’s supposed to work harder or he is content not to work harder, and I think that just adds, that just takes the fans’ discontent and it just explodes exponentially. They can almost abide a guy who can’t play well, but fans here will not abide a guy who doesn’t play well, maybe in part because there is a limit to how hard he will work at it.”
.

Raider O,
How is it racial profiling when illegal immigrants come in all colors? They are simply trying to clean up an illegal immigration problem in Arizona. If a white guy can’t produce a valid AZ driver’s license when pulled over then he will be checked too in case he is an illegal immigrant from Ireland.
If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear.
April 30th, 2010 at 9:56 am
Dakota has a point… and I have a solution, based on his point:
We need to put citizenship status in with DMV records. That way, when an illegal gets pulled over and the cop asks for license, it will show his or her status when he gets their DMV info. If they don’t have a valid DMV-issued I.D., then they should be going to the jailhouse anyway… so their illegal status (or lack of ANY status) will show up when they do an identity search on them. Problem solved… without having to profile anyone.

Bo and LMN, here is the answer to your debate from a Rabbi:
“Rabbi Ari Enkin
Question: Is Judaism a religion or race?
Dear Rabbi Enkin,
I always thought that Judaism was a race and a religion. I say race because certain genetic diseases, like Tay-Sachs, are found among Central and Eastern European (Ashkenazi) Jews. Please explain how this does not mean race. I am very confused on this subject.
Thanks,
Mindy
Answer: Dear Mindy,
I wish others would ask and explore the question you raise!
While the full answer is exhaustive – the short answer is: The Jews are both a race and religion.
Our religion is quite clear — see your nearest Biible.
While a Christian is defined as one who follows the teachings of Jesus, a Jew is defined as one born from a Jewish mother or converted according to Jewish Law. That being said – a person remains a member of the Jewish nation for the rest of their life regardless of what religious practices that person chooses to follow/reject. And yes, as a nation we have our own culture, foods, land, and even diseases.
I hope this helps,
Rabbi Ari Enkin”

Jason Campbell, 2 OL and the best MLB in the draft? nice haul. plus I think Lamarr Houston might be a player (even though I wanted Cody at #44)
your thoughts ???

From SFgate:
The 10 JaMarcus scenarios
“One person, Al Davis, is the only person who’s going to make this decision. The organization wants to get rid of JaMarcus Russell, the sentiment within the organization is to get rid of JaMarcus Russell, and the dollar signs are there to get rid of JaMarcus Russell. And it will happen. But it’s only going to happen on the owner’s timetable. Nobody’s going to tell him when to do it, or how to do it. When he wakes up one morning and decides he wants to release JaMarcus Russell, that’s when it will happen.”
– Former Raiders GM and NFL Network analyst Michael Lombardi
I wish you could all be there with me today, holding my breath and waiting to see if JaMarcus runs out on the practice field. I was convinced Oakland would cut Russell long before this minicamp and let teammates get excited about a fresh start with Jason Campbell. But what do I know?
Here’s what I think will happen today, and I am taking 10 shots at it so I won’t be wrong.
The 10 JaMarcus minicamp scenarios (in no order):
1. He decides at the last minute not to take a pay cut and Al Davis cuts him.
2. The matter is unresolved by 10:30 a.m. and Russell does not practice due to a flu.
3. He takes a big pay cut (the veteran minimum of $630,000) and says he wants to compete for the starting job. Birds chirp, and in the distance a rainbow.
4. Not only that, but Russell weighs nowhere near 300 pounds and takes a minute to blast all the bloggers, tweeters and haters out there.
5. Russell goes three bills, does not take a pay cut, Davis lets him run out there, Russell pulls a hamstring … cha ching.
6. The Raiders let him keep the full $6.45 mil more he has coming (plus the guaranteed 3 mil) on one condition. He goes both ways and gives them 10 plays a game at defensive tackle.
7. He takes a pay cut, offers to give some of the $36 million he already collected back and then suggests that maybe Cal football coach Jeff Tedford defray some of the student fee increases by giving half a mil back himself.
8. He takes a smaller paycut, on one condition: Everything he says to the media today has “Lane Kiffin’s fault” in the middle of it.
9. He buys out Davis, cuts Campbell and has a ball as player-owner until the season starts. Then, the owner realizes he needs a better quarterback.
10. Raiders fans wake up. It was all a bad dream. It’s 2002 and Rich Gannon is dealin’. Woo-hoo.

I’m with you, but OG and FB were addressed in UDFA. I don’t think you have to draft a FB or OG, in the Raiders case they should of looked hard at C and with so many OTs we can always move one of them to OG.

That’s not true Dakota!!! They immigrated from egypt to the the promised land, and to had to fight the natives to stay. Who do you think the Natives were? Monkeys?!?

RNO: let me explain. and also add backup MLB to that list
depth is great and every team needs it, but I’m not sold on Satele, Carlisle, Lawton or Bryant as starters.
I think we could have got some guys on Saturday BETTER than those 4 on the current roster.
I hope undrafted rookies Tonga, Moline, Heard & Parsons really step it up and have a legit shot to make the team!

Getting rid of Morrison was crap. The guy could of been a great back up at all three LB positions. The Raiders got rid of him for a bag of chips, that is not right. I hope he dose well in Jacksonville.

Raider O, do you really want to start a discussion on who owns what land on this planet? Human history is a bloody epic of land disputes, conquest, defeat and ever-changing borders, and everyone was involved, not just the whiteys and the jews. This is a completely ridiculous and irrelevant logic-road to travel on a Raiders blog, 4 minutes away from the start of mini-camp. Lets talk football, and get off this slippery slope, before we all end up on wikipedia looking up names and dates.
