First day in the books

The Raiders concluded their second minicamp sessions Monday with minimal media intrustion, with most everyone bailing out ofter updating the JaMarcus Russell situation.

Defensive end Trevor Scott was not at practice, his place taken by Quentin Groves.

All media availability takes place before practice.

Practice highlights included a lot of snaps by quarterback Jason Campbell, some good, some not so good.

A couple of first impressions:

– Campbell throws some truly awful looking passes that still find their target, and find it with good timing.

– For a quarterback who is not supposed to be mobile, Campbell gets outside on a rollout pretty quickly.

– Defensive tackle Lemarr Houston and cornerback Walter McFadden, both rookie draft picks, had their NFL welcomes in the afternoon session.

Houston didn’t know he was supposed to be on the field, raced to left end, then had both his helmet and jersey ripped off in a neat move by right tackle Langston Walker.

McFadden found himself victimized in coverage often by a number of different receivers.

Those and other practice observations can be found on my Twitter page.

This is the first time EVER I’ve heard Raider fans talk about “pocket awareness”. lol. We had Gannon, you guys hated him because he relied on things like pocket awareness and timed throws.

    ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Ignorant remark. Five, and especially seven step drops rely dar more on timing. Gannon got rid of the ball so quickly that pocket awareness was mainly for busted plays or missed blocks.

OK, Chris, so that’s their plan for Russell. How do they jump start the rest of the team?

    ———————

If you start to get good QB play your fortunes usually take a dramatic turn for the better. I still believe that if we had say Peyton Manning at QB last year we’d be 12-4 rather than 5-11. So I think they’re rightly figuring that good QB play will jump start us into being a winning team.

The other big changes would include riding Bush and McFadden in the running game. Mixing things up and hopefully improving the o-line. Counting on the extraordinarily young WR corps to come into its own. Hope Hue Jackson can finally get this offense going. Keep Cable in more of a traditional HC role rather than a guy who’s tackling a million different roles. Revive our return game which may have been the best in the league in 2008 and the worst in 2009. And hopefully mixing it up and throwing out some more exotic defensive looks/blitz packages.

You mistaken, read my earlier post, no way in the world Campbell and signs an extension to backup Jabust. Campbell was promised the starting job, Guarantee.

What would you say if we end up with 8-8 or 9-7? I remember Arizona used to be a bad team and they went to the Superbowl two years ago. Anything is possible and you should hope so if you are Raider fan.

  • Chris in NY

I think Campbell is fully expected to start. But if JaMarcus restructures his deal and somehow comes out and lights it up in the preseason while Campbell struggles, they’ll go with JaMarcus until he flops. Again, I expect Campbell to start but it’s not written in stone. JaMarcus and even Gradkowski could still win that job. Campbell isn’t making outrageous money where he has to start. He’s making cheap starter/high backup money.

  • the_big_one_of_83

if we can get that vetran wr problem fixed we are this yrs sleeper team

  • RaiderFanFrom Jersey

Peyton Manning is great partially because of his tireless preparation & work ethic. We could use a bunch of that. However, don’t discount the stability he’s had at OC & organizationally. That makes all the difference in putting your qb/team in the best position to succeed.

  • Raiders4eve

    Chris

Too many ifs there my friend. If JR who clearly stated today again that he wont restructure his contract until Anderson interfere in the press conference. Again, if JR plays better in preseason, another if Campbell struggles. Thats three counting while reality is clear, AL wouldnt have traded for Campbell and give him an extension and Campbell wouldnt have signed an extension and come to Oakland if he was to be a backup. He could have stayed in the Redskins and play behind Mcnabb who as everyone knows is an injury prone.

  • Chris in NY

If Schilens stays healthy, we get good production out of either DHB or Murphy on the other side and one of Ford/JLH/Nick Miller stands out in the slot — all of that in addition to Zach Miller’s presence mind you — we’ll be in good shape at WR.

    …………….

I would say, “Not that I wished death on Al, but it was perfect for him to die in August and leave the team to Madden just on time for the season.”

  • Chris in NY

    Raiders4eve,

It wasn’t up to Campbell to stay in Washington behind McNabb. He was traded. Doubt he would’ve wanted to stay anyway after feeling so disrespected for so long. He has a much better chance to play with the Raiders than he would’ve in Washington. And I fully expect him to start. I’m just saying if JaMarcus shows commitment and significantly outplays him between now and September he could still be our opening day starter. Yes, that’s a lot of ifs, which is why I still expect Campbell to start in Week 1 at the Titans.

Reality check: 1) our new defensive captain is a rookie. don’t expect the defense to jell until mid-season at the earliest. 2) Campbell isn’t much better than Gradkowski. 3) all we got on O-Line is two tackle prospects.

Having said that, just by replacing soft players like Russell with hard workers like McClain, the Raiders can still get to 8-8 this year. If Campbell has a big year, 9-7 is even possible.

Jason Campbell was told not to come to the facility once McNabb was acquired. The Redskins unsucessfully tried to trade him for the last 2 months. They’ve been trying to get a QB to replace him for the last 2 years.

NO ONE ELSE WANTED HIM !!!!!!!

Your insisting that a QB would be assured a starting spot after what we went through with that last year is surprising.

You mean to tell me if Charlie Frye is the best QB on the field, Jason Campbell is going start?

If Jamarcus Russell is the best QB through camp, Al is going to start Campbell over his prized pet?

    I think not.

Almost pathetic reading some of you celebrate basically nothing.
You actually consider it a big accomplishment for a qb to complete passes to someone NOT defended? that it’s “AMAZING” to some of you?

    ——————————————————-

    Yeah, Rich …

Figured you’d have a take along those lines.

Bottom line is Russell was no where near the National Enquierer reported 300 lbs, and was the best QB on the field today according to noted Russell hater Cam Inman.

I guess the real story is how did the other 3 QBs out there get outperformed by such a slug?

  • jhill

The quarterback that looked the best in Friday morning’s practice? Bulletin: It was Russell.

If that makes you feel queasy, well, head for that north goal post.

Russell was supposed to be gone thanks to last Saturday’s trade for probable starter Jason Campbell. Russell’s exit, three years after the Raiders drafted him first overall, would have been celebrated as “Raider Nation Liberation Day.”

Instead, Russell came out to play, and he outperformed the Raiders’ four other veteran quarterbacks, although incumbent Bruce Gradkowski is sidelined until training camp with a torn chest muscle.

“My thing is to keep coming out to work until they tell me not to,” Russell said. “Today I’m going to keep coming out, compete for the job, work my tail off.”

“Let’s not make something out of a ghost here,” Cable said about Russell’s often-questionable conditioning. “The kid’s working his tail off.”

    Cable, sticking up for Russell?

    From Cam Inman’s report

  • Rhino

Theres no way Steady Eddie babysits for nothing..he will restructure and be 2nd/3rd QB

  • Coach on Wheels

    JaRussell 52.1 Comp% 2.6 TD% 3.4 INT% 65.2 Rating (all career stats)
    Donald Hollas 53.9 Comp% 3.4 TD5 5.6 INT% 61.8
    Jay Schraeoder 50.8 Comp 4.1 TD% 3.8 INT% 71.7

I’m excited. Russell is just about even with Donald Hollas when you add in JRs fumbles. If Eddie Anderson keeps babysitting him, someday, with a LOT of work, he may reach Jay Schraeoder level. Won’t that be special?

    ==================================================
    Who mentioned weight?
Again, is it a major accomplishment that a professional athlete, in a CONTRACT YEAR who’s been made clear he’s likely on the way out didn’t gain weight?
is that supposed to be impressive?
The fact he was already a fat slob, and didn’t gain more weight isn’t exactly a noteworthy moment.

so what you’re saying is Russell did good playing catch, with no defenders?

    Well…I’m sold.

    Yeah…that’s easily worth 35 mil.

    Where do I sign?

  • http://www.nataliegulbis.com Richochet

Like it or not, Russell is STILL the worst starting qb, in the league, in both of his full seasons.

how odd is it that some of you think that after YEARS AND YEARS of throwing the ball, badly, that now, all of a sudden, he’s now the guy? He’s now going to go from worst to first?

    I’ll say it again…playing catch? I’m easily a 95% passer…easy.
Doesn’t mean I can handle a 350 lb guy barreling in on me…

Nor does it mean Russell can.

Admit it..some of you want the smallest thing to hang on to..considering how long you’ve backed this “slug”. How long you’ve made excuses. How long you blamed everyone but JR’s lazy ass.

Point is it’s catch, nothing more, so why make something out of nothing, considering JR’s last 3 years?

Called setting yourself up for a fall…big time.

obviously I don’t think JR deserves squat. The fact Al the Idiot is considering it just means Same-O Raiders.
