First day in the books

The Raiders concluded their second minicamp sessions Monday with minimal media intrustion, with most everyone bailing out ofter updating the JaMarcus Russell situation.

Defensive end Trevor Scott was not at practice, his place taken by Quentin Groves.

All media availability takes place before practice.

Practice highlights included a lot of snaps by quarterback Jason Campbell, some good, some not so good.

A couple of first impressions:

– Campbell throws some truly awful looking passes that still find their target, and find it with good timing.

– For a quarterback who is not supposed to be mobile, Campbell gets outside on a rollout pretty quickly.

– Defensive tackle Lemarr Houston and cornerback Walter McFadden, both rookie draft picks, had their NFL welcomes in the afternoon session.

Houston didn’t know he was supposed to be on the field, raced to left end, then had both his helmet and jersey ripped off in a neat move by right tackle Langston Walker.

McFadden found himself victimized in coverage often by a number of different receivers.

Those and other practice observations can be found on my Twitter page.

After spending a few weeks here, my impressions are that there are, surprisingly, quite a few really smart fans on here and then there are a select few, like Richocet and Real Madden Raider, what ever that means, who are just complete tools. lol… Not fans of the team, just here to stir the pot up to see if they can get a rise. Why do you people even bother interacting with them? They are the Rush Limbaughs of the site. Only here for entertainment purposes. why don’t you people get that? lol

After you spending a few weeks here, it’s obvious to all you’re a cross posting piece of crap..hoping to not be noticed.

    Everyone DOES get that.

Now shut up before you hurt yourself…again.

  • Sweep The Leg.

    Skidmarkus Russell, just go away.

    Go quietly, without a whimper.

Shrug your shoulders one more time.

“It ain’t the end of the world”, right?

    You are the weakest link…goodbye.

Peyton Manning is great partially because of his tireless preparation & work ethic. We could use a bunch of that. However, don’t discount the stability he’s had at OC & organizationally. That makes all the difference in putting your qb/team in the best position to succeed.

    ——————–

Guess what one of the biggest drivers of stability is in terms of coaching and systems in professional sports? Time’s up. It’s success. While that’s usually measured in wins, it’s also measured in progress occasionally despite wins.

In Manning’s case, it was pretty obvious right out the gate that he was something special. Even though the wins weren’t always there (Indy defense was really bad before Dungy arrived) the offense was potent. No need to fix what ain’t broken, so they kept the OC and system in place and refined it around Peyton.

Contrast that with the Raiders. The offense has been inept ever since the end of the Gannon era. They couldn’t find the same kind of QB to replace him with when age caught up to him. While Impatient Al was messing with the mix of players, he also kept trying to fix the problem by changing the coaches and the system all at the same time. To me, that’s been the biggest issue. You need to pick your leaders and a system and then build your personnel around it.

The good news is that we’re seeing some continuity with Cable now. It started when he was OL coach and installed the ZBS and then started to tailor the run game around it. As HC for what will be his 3rd season (counting fractions) we’re starting to see him put his signature on the players that he needs to run the system. If this season brings noticeable improvements over the last few, then we can hope that Al will leave it alone and let it grow from there.

So yeah, had Peyton landed in Oakland there’s a good chance that we would’ve seen more stability in OCs and systems as well. Even with Al.

And for the record, a No. Cal team did take him a “trophy” just last year. The Sharks won the President’s Trophy, awarded to the team that “wins” the regular season with the most points.

Other than getting them a new banner to hang in the rafters it didn’t them much good though, since I assume that the gist of the question was around championships and not just trophies. Instead, they were handed a first round knockout in the playoffs.

But this year is looking better. They’re up on the Red Wings 1-0 in the second round. Right now I’d say that they are the Bay Area’s best chance to for a championship in the immediate future.

Sharks in 2010, Raiders 2011. That works for me!

You actually consider it a big accomplishment for a qb to complete passes to someone NOT defended?

You really don’t have any idea what goes on out on a practice field do you? Why don’t you find your little mommies group, and talk about lamaze class.

remember what Kiffin called that injury? an almost career ending injury, and guys here was bashing him for being doom and gloom – well he was realistic, once again realistic isnt the raider way…

  • Raider240

Give me a break this is not the first time Russell has looked good in shorts when he is not facing a real pass rush. Campbell was not going to set the world on fire his first day either. He does not have any timing down with the recievers yet.

If Russell sticks around and plays better then the rest in the preseason then fine he deserves to start…But forgive me if reading that he was the best looking of the 4 that could throw yesterday does not impress me period! Garcia said in a interview Russell is known to light it up in practice lets see him do it when it counts…If he turns into the player Al probably still believes him to be then fine I ll cheer for him so will the rest of the Raider fans.

the wideout article taht nnamdi21 posted on the wideouts is pretty good though and confirmed that dhb caught all but two effant passses, contrdicting cam inmans article saying that he still dropping easy passes

  • http://atm Raider O

    119,

Bo was joking, but he does want us to trade DMAC.

  • SteveAlford21

    TRADE DMC FOR… umm… a jokebook?

  • http://atm Raider O

Or as he calls him, McFelldown.

Damn you Mich!! The OSU > Preppie Mich

  • SteveAlford21

Oh, wait… the team already has one… when JR was horribly playing QB behind last year’s stinky line, the playbook itself WAS a joke.

  • http://atm Raider O

Trade DMAC and Mich to Canada!! We don’t need them!

  • SteveAlford21

Trade DMC for a time machine so that we can go into the future and bring back a mature version of DMC that has better ball security and doesn’t tackle himself!

  • kvnbntly

for having a learining disability bruce campbell has one of the more intelligent sounding post practice interviews wish he wouldn’t have had his hands on the podium though like to have seen just how broad those shoulders really are, gottas be the most rocked up tackle in history/ ford isn’t at a loss for words either,
ps i aopologis for my typing habit of hitting the h key after everything its supoose to be in front of, firggin ridiculous.

  • http://atm Raider O

No Steve. That was The Fat Monkey’s Joke book!

  • SteveAlford21

Can someone bring in the guy who taught ball security to Tiki so that DMC can stop tackling himself and stripping the ball from himself on the way down? I would appreciate that. Also, can someone make sure that Hue uses a lot of two-back sets and sends DMC out to the slot pre-snap and plays him as a receiver or has a lead blocker, a tackle, and a pulling guard lead the way on some sweeps and tosses to the outside so that DMC can get in space where he excels instead of up the middle.

  • kvnbntly

dmc his rookie year after the turff toe injury, i thought it was the injury or shoes keeping him from planting firm enough, but it seems to go on and on, keep him in the slot, except for on artificial turf, damn slipery grass anyways.

What bothers me about this draft is that people are trying to give the credit to Cable. So we blame Al for the bad drafts, and we credit the coaches for the good ones!
    LMAO

  • kvnbntly

atleast thats one thing everyone can agree on, kinda wanted ansah or how ever ya spell it, but i guess ford will have to do

  • 30 year raider

  • 30 year raider

the draft on a scale of 1 – 10… including the trades id give us a solid 8

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

Any updates from camp today. Or is the media only given 1 day?

  • 30 year raider

i thought we could have done a lil better in the undrafted free agency tho… in that id give us a 5.5

  • kvnbntly

campbell may be lean, but he benched like 13-14 more reps than henderson who did low 20′s

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

You guys better hope that undrafted free agent Heard kid impresses the coaching staff.

at 350 lbs..he would be a good guy for those goal line and 3rd short downs for the defense.

    You know.

  • kvnbntly

sateles combine bench was a bit low also, but he was fast.

  • http://atm Raider O

    8?!
    I give it a 9. I would have given us a 10, if we drafted a strong 2 down DT and a C.
