Raiders a national story

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, April 30th, 2010 at 10:21 am in Oakland Raiders.

The press room is filling up with camera crews and reporters, awaiting a Raiders minicamp practice.

The biggest story, moreso than a critically acclaimed draft, is the status of quarterback JaMarcus Russell in light of the acquisition of Washington quarterback Jason Campbell.

I’ll be filing Twitter updates from the practice field and blog entries in between practice and interview sessions. Practices are at 10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. (Pacific time), with interview availability in between practices.

If someone can post Jerry’s tweets, that would kick arse. I can’t get them here at work.

Getting rid of Morrison was crap. The guy could of been a great back up at all three LB positions. The Raiders got rid of him for a bag of chips, that is not right. I hope he dose well in Jacksonville.

  12. raiderbaum Says:

Russell´s weight = 299, then comes out and says “I knew yall would be shocked to know that I´m not at 300″

RaiderO, Jews were originally settled in Canaan (roughly what is not Isael) and left for Egypt due to disease and famine…then they came back, then they were kicked out, now they are back for good.

I don’t know who were there 4000 years ago…probably monkeys yes.

  14. RNOraiderFan Says:

I would start OT Campbell at guard and see what the guy can do.

  17. BART Bridge Blues Says:

I heard Shoelace Russell was at 290 a few weeks ago, but he was probably forced to go on Jenny Craig by his agent, so I bet he weighs in at 280, but the company line is 275.

The Egyptians racially profiled the Jews and enslaved them. But the Jews drafted Moses as their no. 1 QB and he led them back to the promised land.

Agreed. I’d rather have Morrison to back up McClain than Ricky Brown or Travis Goethel. However, that may have caused him to be disgruntled and Capt Kirk seemed to be a solid guy and leader in the locker room. Now there is no division amongst the players here. Rolando and only Rolando at MLB.

I’m curious to see if Thomas Howard stays after Trevor Scott ousted him at WLB and we traded for Wimbley & Groves.

  22. Raider O Says:

    Dakota,

Great Logic!! Give back native Americans their land back!! You are talking about 4000 years ago, but you ignore Native Americans from 100’s of years ago!!

  23. L.A. Raider Dave Says:

Hey RaiderO & Dakota, exchange emails so we dont have to read your lame post that have nothing to do with MiniCamp.

  24. Dakota Says:

The Raiders just posted this picture of Russell doing squats as proof that he is working out and probably as justification for not cutting him:

  25. RaiderRockstar Says:

if Russell stays on the roster as 3rd string QB and Al Davis pays him $9.5 million to hold a clipboard & eat Skittles we’ll be a bunch of hurtin’ eunuchs!

even if he plays the same?

    ——————————————————-

    Whoa there young man!

Were talking about MAYBE working your way up from 3rd string at this point.

In that context ONLY, it matters that he would be somehwere near the weight he was when we drafted him as oppossed to 300lbs after a summer of G4′ing all over the country.

  97. El Tato Says:

Working offense vs. no defense. Frye, JaMarcus, Campbell, Boller throw swing passes to left . . .that’s your depth chart, minicamp style

  100. El Tato Says:

NO!!!! I hope we havent drafted the 2010 version of DHB

  101. El Tato Says:

    Losman is a FA

  102. RaiderRockstar Says:

Jhill: so you would keep Russell as 3rd string (even if his play doesn’t improve) at $9.5 million as long as he lost some weight during the offseason and doesn’t weigh anything close to 3 bills???

cut Frye & Boller to make room for JaFranchise?

  103. Bo Schembechler Jackson Says:

    No Southwick?

  104. El Tato Says:

I dont think we will resign Losman, maybe he didnt show enough last season in practice.

  105. edward teach Says:

It’s quite simple, really. The number 12 was meant for the passing end of a pass play, not the catching end.

They’ve just got it all backwards.

  128. ny-raider Says:

DHB can’t catch a cold, but has great work ethic. It’s like a chick who’s ugly, has a great personality. I still don’t want any of that.

Sure he’s fast, but that ain’t helping if he don’t have the ball. Schilens and Murphy should have excellent seasons now that we have a quarterback who can throw deep with a modicom of accuracy.

I think Zach’s produciton will pick up too with an upgraded OL, now that he doesn’t have to stay home to block for the biggest sloth on the face of the earth.

I like DHB and Murphy as our long term solutions. Maybe we should just hold Chaz out the first 7 or 8 games of the season and save him for the second half.

    ****************************************************

Seriously. I have no idea why he was even projected first round. Just because he played in a pro offense in Maryland? Come on. Reports were rife that this guy couldn’t catch and the proof was in the pudding when we watched him last year. Guess he was just “Pressing” every single game. Maybe this mini-camp catchgin clinic he is putting on right now is probaby just beginner’s luck. Hope I am wrong. We already shelled out enough for fat boy and dmac with little (DMac) to no (JMac) return.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++

This is what I would anticipate too, but I’d guess Seymour will play RDT…it was his college position, after all.

Not a lot of beef on that starting line, but all four of them are very strong and everyone but Kelly is very quick. It just might work.

  169. jhill Says:

    Hmmmm …

    Nah, that’s a chicken bone.

  176. BART Bridge Blues Says:

thats the starting D-line I have envisioned since the draft:

    Seymour, Kelly, Houston, Bryant

with heavy doses of Shaugnessy, J-Rich, Joseph and hopefully Heard. I dont think position will matter as much as reps. They are all probably gonna place inside and outside, with constant rotations.

All 4 of those starters are best described as 3-4 DE’s; its an interesting strategy anyway.

  177. jhill Says:

    Priest !!!!!

    Where are you bruh ??????

    Debo ??????

Russell is not the reported 300lbs and it seems as though Willie may have been correct.

Hey, even seems like Cable wasn’t lying saying he was there all this time working on his game and bonding with his teammates.

Feel free to jump back in guys!

  178. inonewordraider Says:

If Russell is able to play well when the nation debates whether he’s a bigger bust than Leaf, he’ll be a tough minded muthaf with a rocket arm

  179. No Mas Diamante Says:

J.L Higgins is as good as gone. That big hit he took last year knocked his balls off.

  180. SilverNBlackPA Says:

I’ll say this also, when they bring the 3-4 look, I actually like the idea of Houston at NT. He’s “only” 305, but he’s powerful as all bejeezus and fast…he’s almost a Jay Ratliff clone and he’s one of the most effective nose guards in the game.

Dallas plays a 3-4 system that requires the NT to be disruptive and not just fat and eat up blocks…I hope that’s what we use.

  181. DMAC Says:

Johnny Lee Scary might be done.

  182. L.A. Raider Dave Says:

The bigger question is…will they be effective at stopping the run..

  187. RaiderRockstar Says:

Jhill: why would you even think of calling DHB a bust?

  290. BART Bridge Blues Says:

From the Crypt Keeper’s Top 5 surprise teams of next season:

    3. Oakland Raiders: The Raiders might not be playoff contenders, but the addition of Jason Campbell at quarterback and an improved defense should end their rut of being a 5-11 team. Campbell was part of a disappointing offense in Washington that averaged 16.6 points a game, but that low number is 4.3 points better than what the Raiders averaged last season. Campbell completed half of his passes to wide receivers. JaMarcus Russell could consistently hit only tight end Zach Miller, and no wide receiver caught more than 34 passes in either of his two seasons at quarterback.

The Raiders’ schedule goes from .527 to .500. That should add at least one win to their record. My guess is that Campbell will be able to get about 18 points a game, so the Raiders could get to between seven and nine wins. Hue Jackson, the Raiders’ new offensive coordinator, will try to use Darrius Heyward-Bey on more bubble screens to take advantage of his speed. Having Campbell behind center improves the Raiders’ chances of winning division games. If Campbell plays with more consistency than Russell, a 3-3 or 4-2 record in the AFC West isn’t out of the question for Oakland.
