Raiders a national story
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, April 30th, 2010 at 10:21 am in Oakland Raiders.
The press room is filling up with camera crews and reporters, awaiting a Raiders minicamp practice.
The biggest story, moreso than a critically acclaimed draft, is the status of quarterback JaMarcus Russell in light of the acquisition of Washington quarterback Jason Campbell.
I’ll be filing Twitter updates from the practice field and blog entries in between practice and interview sessions. Practices are at 10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. (Pacific time), with interview availability in between practices.
[You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site.]

If someone can post Jerry’s tweets, that would kick arse. I can’t get them here at work.

Stanford Routt’s been around, I hear. Must have signed 1st-3rd tender . . . why wouldn’t he?

April 30th, 2010 at 10:28 am
Russell´s weight = 299, then comes out and says “I knew yall would be shocked to know that I´m not at 300″
April 30th, 2010 at 10:29 am
RaiderO, Jews were originally settled in Canaan (roughly what is not Isael) and left for Egypt due to disease and famine…then they came back, then they were kicked out, now they are back for good.

April 30th, 2010 at 10:30 am
I would start OT Campbell at guard and see what the guy can do.

April 30th, 2010 at 10:31 am
I heard Shoelace Russell was at 290 a few weeks ago, but he was probably forced to go on Jenny Craig by his agent, so I bet he weighs in at 280, but the company line is 275.

The Egyptians racially profiled the Jews and enslaved them. But the Jews drafted Moses as their no. 1 QB and he led them back to the promised land.

Agreed. I’d rather have Morrison to back up McClain than Ricky Brown or Travis Goethel. However, that may have caused him to be disgruntled and Capt Kirk seemed to be a solid guy and leader in the locker room. Now there is no division amongst the players here. Rolando and only Rolando at MLB.
I’m curious to see if Thomas Howard stays after Trevor Scott ousted him at WLB and we traded for Wimbley & Groves.
April 30th, 2010 at 10:34 am

Great Logic!! Give back native Americans their land back!! You are talking about 4000 years ago, but you ignore Native Americans from 100’s of years ago!!

Gotta run. Rockstar, wish I had more time to talk draft with you, but I’ve gotta run. Whoa there young man!
Were talking about MAYBE working your way up from 3rd string at this point.
In that context ONLY, it matters that he would be somehwere near the weight he was when we drafted him as oppossed to 300lbs after a summer of G4′ing all over the country.

DHB can’t catch a cold, but has great work ethic. It’s like a chick who’s ugly, has a great personality. I still don’t want any of that.
Sure he’s fast, but that ain’t helping if he don’t have the ball. Schilens and Murphy should have excellent seasons now that we have a quarterback who can throw deep with a modicom of accuracy.
I think Zach’s produciton will pick up too with an upgraded OL, now that he doesn’t have to stay home to block for the biggest sloth on the face of the earth.

All the coaches have been raving about Bryant, I think there is little doubt he will be starting. He was pretty svelte for a DT last year, maybe he has packed on some weight. They should just bunk him with JaMarcus in Napa.
April 30th, 2010 at 11:24 am
I bet Rolando McClain is excited!
starting DT’s:
Kelly – undrafted
Bryant – undrafted
woohoo! 29th ranked run defense solved!
April 30th, 2010 at 11:24 am
DHB is for real until you put a defender in front of him.
April 30th, 2010 at 11:24 am
Jerrymcd Russell throwing with authority in routine drills, lots of clean DHB catches . . . vs. no D, but you got to start somewhere
April 30th, 2010 at 11:24 am
#8, huh? Maybe it’s because he is 4 times better then #2.
April 30th, 2010 at 11:26 am
Chaz Schillens watching in baseball cap, not practicing
——————————————————-
What a surprise!
Over under on how many games Chaz plays this year?
I think I’m about to move on from Chaz man.
I like DHB and Murphy as our long term solutions. Maybe we should just hold Chaz out the first 7 or 8 games of the season and save him for the second half.

Hmmm…reports of Jruss being 300 pounds? debunked already.
Throwing with authority in drills? At least Jerry isn’t tweeting he sucks already.
Gotta start somewhere…
April 30th, 2010 at 11:27 am
get John Henderson!
start Kellen Heard and see if he can dump Samson Satele on his can!
April 30th, 2010 at 11:27 am
I sure hope DHB has it figured out now.

****************************************************
Seriously. I have no idea why he was even projected first round. Just because he played in a pro offense in Maryland? Come on. Reports were rife that this guy couldn’t catch and the proof was in the pudding when we watched him last year. Guess he was just “Pressing” every single game. Maybe this mini-camp catchgin clinic he is putting on right now is probaby just beginner’s luck. Hope I am wrong. We already shelled out enough for fat boy and dmac with little (DMac) to no (JMac) return.

This is what I would anticipate too, but I’d guess Seymour will play RDT…it was his college position, after all.
Not a lot of beef on that starting line, but all four of them are very strong and everyone but Kelly is very quick. It just might work.
April 30th, 2010 at 11:36 am
Hmmmm …
Lots of cameras and reporters at mini camp, and not one word of Russell being fat?????
Not even Schefter, lol!
April 30th, 2010 at 11:36 am
Seymour is not 350 pounds, but 2 linemans are needed to block him
April 30th, 2010 at 11:36 am
Seymour Kelly Houston all push the pocket and get natural pressure on the QB, although small Bryant looked good last year fighting the double team at NT
April 30th, 2010 at 11:37 am
Jhill,
Where the hell did the reports that he was three bills come from anyway? It’s so strange to me. There’s this crazy push to get JR out the door. Complete BS!
April 30th, 2010 at 11:37 am
He’s only grunting cuz he has a little schit turd stuck in his fat azz.
April 30th, 2010 at 11:37 am

April 30th, 2010 at 11:38 am
thats the starting D-line I have envisioned since the draft:
Seymour, Kelly, Houston, Bryant
with heavy doses of Shaugnessy, J-Rich, Joseph and hopefully Heard. I dont think position will matter as much as reps. They are all probably gonna place inside and outside, with constant rotations.
All 4 of those starters are best described as 3-4 DE’s; its an interesting strategy anyway.
April 30th, 2010 at 11:39 am
Priest !!!!!
Where are you bruh ??????
Debo ??????
Russell is not the reported 300lbs and it seems as though Willie may have been correct.
Hey, even seems like Cable wasn’t lying saying he was there all this time working on his game and bonding with his teammates.
Feel free to jump back in guys!
April 30th, 2010 at 11:39 am
If Russell is able to play well when the nation debates whether he’s a bigger bust than Leaf, he’ll be a tough minded muthaf with a rocket arm
April 30th, 2010 at 11:39 am
J.L Higgins is as good as gone. That big hit he took last year knocked his balls off.
April 30th, 2010 at 11:39 am
I’ll say this also, when they bring the 3-4 look, I actually like the idea of Houston at NT. He’s “only” 305, but he’s powerful as all bejeezus and fast…he’s almost a Jay Ratliff clone and he’s one of the most effective nose guards in the game.
Dallas plays a 3-4 system that requires the NT to be disruptive and not just fat and eat up blocks…I hope that’s what we use.
April 30th, 2010 at 11:40 am
Johnny Lee Scary might be done.
April 30th, 2010 at 11:40 am

April 30th, 2010 at 11:42 am
Good post @180..
Having a quick athletic nice could be dangerous! That line upo could push the pocket and put pressure on the QB.
The bigger question is…will they be effective at stopping the run..

I was done with him Kiffin’s last year. Running OOBs on punt returns, giving up on routes, just LUNCHING around out there?
And did I mention that ridiculous flat top he was rocking last year?
April 30th, 2010 at 11:43 am
Schilens and Murphy won the receiver comp last year by default, Ford DHB and JLH will all push for reps this year which is nothing but good
April 30th, 2010 at 11:43 am
Higgins does have a nice doo tho. Rockin that Kid n’ Play flat top throwback..
April 30th, 2010 at 11:43 am
JLH better make some plays this preseason or he may be on the outside looking in.
Ford will be on the 53 unless he is hurt.
April 30th, 2010 at 11:44 am

I’m rooting for the kid, you know that!
But hard to argue that he wasn’t on his way to bustville in a lot of people’s mind, and articles on various sites.

6 drops? Really? That’s the total count for him last season? FInd that hard to believe. Maybe they just stopped throwing to him. I don’t want to put teh B label on him either, but I don’t see him as our #1. Passion, no doubt. Great route runnig, sure. But what good does it do if he can’t catch. I’m all happy for him having a great first practice and hope he can really produce for us. I think Jacoby replaces JLH as our returner. The boy’s got wheels.

Starting to wonder if Campbell wasn’t brought in specifically as a 2 year solution to let JR mature. i.e., he sits, learns and grows up for 2 seasons, then takes over the starting job once, hopefully with his head out of his ass this time. He would only be 26…
That’s my theory anyway. Personally, I have no confidence he’s ever growing up, but would be happy to be wrong.

They tried that experiment last year. It was called Jeff Garcia. Until of course he realized JMR was goingto start no matter what he did and he had to fake a calf injury to get outta town.
April 30th, 2010 at 12:11 pm
It will by funny as schyt when Russell pulls up lame today and Davis will have to pay the POS another $10 million.
Pure comedy.

1) Not restructure contract, and that leads to be released and being considered the biggest bust of all time.
2) Restructure and be the #2 (or even #3) QB and try to get better and win the job, learn the playbook, be in shape,…

From the Crypt Keeper’s Top 5 surprise teams of next season:
3. Oakland Raiders: The Raiders might not be playoff contenders, but the addition of Jason Campbell at quarterback and an improved defense should end their rut of being a 5-11 team. Campbell was part of a disappointing offense in Washington that averaged 16.6 points a game, but that low number is 4.3 points better than what the Raiders averaged last season. Campbell completed half of his passes to wide receivers. JaMarcus Russell could consistently hit only tight end Zach Miller, and no wide receiver caught more than 34 passes in either of his two seasons at quarterback.
The Raiders’ schedule goes from .527 to .500. That should add at least one win to their record. My guess is that Campbell will be able to get about 18 points a game, so the Raiders could get to between seven and nine wins. Hue Jackson, the Raiders’ new offensive coordinator, will try to use Darrius Heyward-Bey on more bubble screens to take advantage of his speed. Having Campbell behind center improves the Raiders’ chances of winning division games. If Campbell plays with more consistency than Russell, a 3-3 or 4-2 record in the AFC West isn’t out of the question for Oakland.

Wait, I get it. Al Davis will be the first to pay QBs in reverse order. He is an innovator like that. This will revolutionize QB play in the NFL.
