Raiders a national story

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, April 30th, 2010 at 10:21 am in Oakland Raiders.

The press room is filling up with camera crews and reporters, awaiting a Raiders minicamp practice.

The biggest story, moreso than a critically acclaimed draft, is the status of quarterback JaMarcus Russell in light of the acquisition of Washington quarterback Jason Campbell.

I’ll be filing Twitter updates from the practice field and blog entries in between practice and interview sessions. Practices are at 10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. (Pacific time), with interview availability in between practices.

on his way to bustville ?

DHB is a good blocker & route runner. got injured last year. 6 drops. fellow rookie Louis Murphy had 9 drops!

hard working humble kid with a passion for the game.

he’ll be just fine. so will Higgins

  • JB

    Per Jerry twitter:
Russell throwing with authority in routine drills, lots of clean DHB catches . . . vs. no D, but you got to start somewhere

Hue Jackson: You gotta grunt when you throw that son of a gun. Grunt when you throw it!

Still no team session , Jared Veldheer taking dummy reps as an left tackle, Bruce Campbell as a right guard

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

    LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lonetree says: “McFadden injures his leg attempting to pry himself off the ground”!!!

    LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • jhill

It was the 80’s Gumby cut.

    My bad …

    You’re right about that!

  • SilverNBlackPA

I wanna hear how Henderson looks. Can’t figure that kid out; dominant in stretches and pathetic in others.

Case in point: in the game against the Steelers he shut down James Harrison. The very next week, Brian Orakpo humiliates him. I don’t get it.

Thats all well and fine, throwing hard hasnever been russels weakness its his accuracy thats the problem, and throwing hard isn’t always a good thing. Don’t nobody like catching them hard ass rocket finger breakers all the time. thtas why murphy and them claim its hard to catch his balls already now as it is.

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

It’s damn time those little punk recevers got used to it. Catch the damn ball or see ya later. Elway’s receivers figured it out. Quit complaining and catch the damn ball!

I think all of this media hype about Russell made everyone think he was gonna implode out there or something. The guy is and always has been an elite practice QB, but we all know he is still gonna suck when it comes time to read a defense.

Its actually a smart play by Al, if he still thinks he can trade him. Let all the reporters see that he is only 270 and still has a rocket arm, and let all the other teams re-evaluate Russell’s talent. Somebody might bite, stranger things have happened.

Off topic.. just flippin thru the channels and came across the Blazing Saddles fart scene. Best laugh I’ve had in a long time… lmao.
“How about some more beans Mr. Tagert?”
“I believe you boys have had enough…”

Tom Cable seemed very confidant in how immediate he was to declare Campbell a RG.

He may be on to something.

    ***

players play for Bruce Gradkowski. didn’t for JaMarcus Russell

isn’t that what JR said ???

  • El Tato

Barnes was an above-average LT in Jax, and a powerful run-blocker more suited to play RT.

Last year was his first at RT and was injured most training camp and preseason, I hope he can stay healthy.

  • jhill

hard working humble kid with a passion for the game.

    he’ll be just fine.

    ——————————————————

    I agree.

Did you get a chance to log on to Raiders.com? If you click on any of Janette Thompson’s videos they run a promo of DHB at the Raiders camp for kids or something like that.

I really like that guy. I like all the underdogs, lol!

  • DMAC

What about Henderson or Walker at RT?

  • inonewordraider

I sure hope Veldheer and Cambpell crack the starting spots, Barnes is a large man and if he figures out RT can open up some running lanes

  • DMAC

Campbell might turn out to be a beast at RG.

  • El Tato

Barnes was drafted in the 2nd round after playing RT in College, I believe he can be a good RT, I just hope that last season strugles were because he was injured

If I have to hear “hard working humble kid” again, I think I’m gonna throw up. The guy was terrible last year and it contributed to JR being benched. The offense improved when HE got hurt (benched). He should have been benched before JR. Sounds like he might be coming around, but the jury is out.

  • DKnight007

    SIGN DT BIG JOHN HENDERSON!!

  • ny-raider

6 drops? Really? That’s the total count for him last season? FInd that hard to believe. Maybe they just stopped throwing to him. I don’t want to put teh B label on him either, but I don’t see him as our #1. Passion, no doubt. Great route runnig, sure. But what good does it do if he can’t catch. I’m all happy for him having a great first practice and hope he can really produce for us. I think Jacoby replaces JLH as our returner. The boy’s got wheels.

  • No Mas Diamante

Campbell is one strong mofo. did you see that sports science show featuring him?

  • inonewordraider

Sadly, Schilens is in midseason form, guy might never play a full season

  • aig

what an exciting time to be a Raider fan right now. Last year we were hoping for the best when we hear these drops and misfires. So far so good nation.

Pittsburgh game, Gallery and Walker were at LG.

Washington game, Chris Morris at LG.

The thing with this guy is he needs so much damn help! Gallery helped him A LOT last year with assignments, etc, and the year before the TEs and RBs stayed in to help him.

  • ny-raider

By any chance are Schilens and Miller related?

  • El Tato

DHB had 6 drops out of 40 targets (source: hosted.stats.com)

My slleper picks are campbell, ford, and number one overall… Walter mcfaddn. watch and see… that mcfadden kid is going to be a player.

  • Tom cables pimp hand

    my bad i mean sleeper.

  • inonewordraider

Between Galler Campbell Barnes we got some serious run blockers

  • El Tato

Murphy had 9 drops put of 96 targets

So that’s 9 catches, 6 drops and the 25 times Russell threw the ball 75 feet over his head.

I guess the REST OF THAT TWEET didn’t help your post, huh?

    Here, let me help you.

Russell throwing with authority in routine drills, lots of clean DHB catches

There you go bruh … LOTS of clean catches by DHB!

  • ny-raider

Murphy was also our leading receiver last year. Imagine if JM was even remotely accurate….

  • JB

    More twitter:

First team sessions, lots of basic runs, short passes, Frye with first team, Russell with twos, Campbell, then Boller . . nothing downfield

Campbell considers going downfield, pump fakes, and drops it . . . tuck rule, perhaps?

Dude, you’ve got to better than this. This take is almost as goofy as the best stuff Mista Paisley Panties has to offer. I’m gonna give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you’re joking.

  • raidergo

seriously. whats wrong w/ chaz and miller

  • lefty12

Post 219-bullsh!t-he was benched because he was stinking up the place and his teammates and coaches had no confidence in him.If we have to read your excuses for him 1 more time,we might all throw up!!!!!!!!!!!

  • JB

Scary moment . . Frye pump fakes, Nnamdi doesnt but it, gets tangled with JLH, they go down in heap but are fine

  • El Tato

Schilens 2 drops out of 52 targets

JLH 3 drops out of 45 targets

  • SilverNBlackPA

    Jezus. Jerry Mac:

“Scary moment . . Frye pump fakes, Nnamdi doesnt but it, gets tangled with JLH, they go down in heap but are fine”

    1) Nnamdi ain’t gonna buy any fakes from Charlie Frye

    2) With our luck, I’m shocked Nnamdi didn’t tear every ligament he had

  • RaiderNate

Agree with the McFadden sleeper pick. After a few years of experience we are all going to be saying how in the world did we get this kid in the 5th round

  • SilverNBlackPA

You know all those things people say Chuck Norris can do? He’s just trying to imitate Nnamdi Asomugha

  • JB

Russell completes back to back passes, to DHB short in traffic, medium depth to Murphy covered by 36, whoever that is . .

  • El Tato

    36… Derrick Gibson for sure

  • SilverNBlackPA

Russell completes back to back passes? First time for everything, I guess

  • inonewordraider

Russell showing all the national media, restructure his deal and we could get something for him or shoot maybe he shocks the world and leads us back to glory!

  • JB

Mike Mitchell, 2nd team safety with Eugene, turns too late on Boller u-throw, JLH makes catch

  • http://www.flickr.com/photos/skew-t/166654980/ BART Bridge Blues

It’s very tongue in cheek Debo, but my point is that the media will be impressed by Russell today, because their expectations going in were so LOW.
