I thought russell looked pretty good in his relief appearances.
Except for the 2nd half Redskin fiasco. But, all I can remember is Orakpo sacking him every time he dropped back. That’s like a repressed memory. Been blacked out.LOL.
==========================================

If you remember that Redskin game in the Coliseum, the Raiders were playing well behind Grads. On a 3rd down and 11 late in the lst half, Grads hits Murphy for what appeared to be the lst down. The Raiders lined up and ran over RG for three yards, and they reviewed the PRIOR PLAY! We were all up in arms! And then they OVER TURNED THE PRIOR PLAY!! We were outraged! No first down, so the Raiders had to punt, which they did. On the coverage Hiram Eugene breaths on the Skins returner and they gave us a 15 yard penalty!! At this EXACT moment the entire staff went nuts, and John Fassel ran onto the field to express his justified displeasure. ANOTHER FIFTEEN YARD PENALTY!

The team gave up right then and there, the Skins drove down the field and scored. Needless to say, we were all unbelievably pissed off and upset. Turns out Grads has torn ligaments and can't start the 2nd half, and as usual, everyone blames Jamarcus Russell.

JR was amazing in H.S. and college because he never had to apply himself then. He was a lean and fast 6'5" in H.S. and was a man playing against boys. At LSU, he wasn't the focal point of that offense, so there was no pressure on him to make plays. Defenses were trying to stop their vicious ground attack, so his receivers were usually single-covered and were very good at getting open. JR's amazing natural gifts for the QB position allowed him to excel without having to apply himself. He can't get away with that at THIS level, though... and he has never awoken to that fact or adapted to the situation. He should have realized that he has to WORK in the NFL by now, but he hasn't. He still thinks that he is the chosen one and that his failure to progress is the fault of everyone but him.

I hope he turns it around in Oakland, but if not, I hope he gets a shot with another team, but has to convert to DT... and fails at that, too.

Steve,
How ya doin? You've sold me on the movie. I'm gonna check out Superfan. What plays are you referring to?Where Russell struggled to hook up with his receivers later in the year. I thought russell looked pretty good in his relief appearances.
Except for the 2nd half Redskin fiasco. But, all I can remember is Orakpo sacking him every time he dropped back. That's like a repressed memory. Been blacked out.LOL.
I thought he looked good in the game winning drive against Denver, however. Thought he was even better against Baltimore in the season finale. Until the strip and fumble. My heart sank. I knew his critics were going to have a field day.
Even on that play, he was doing what his critics say he can't. Going through his reads. You could see him look deep, check down, and just as he was going to dump it to the fullback, wham.

Thank you Buckeye Raider. I saw Elways lst game as a pro from the sideline and I still don't believe what I saw now 25 years later. And Russell should be able to be THAT GOOD. If any of you really want to know something about Jamarcus Russell, ask some LSU boosters about him. They all say the same thing: he is the closest thing to an otherworldy Q that they have ever had down there, and they all wonder what the hell we did to him.

Just a few rambling thoughts on Jamarcus. I have a pet peeve. It's not with one person. But a lot of people, who say "all JR has is a big arm. Thast's it." Inevitably somebody says "who cares if he can throw it eighty yards, or sixty yards on his knees, through the goal posts." Something along those lines. Drives me crazy. It's not about that.

The best way I can describe it is watching old NFL Films footage of my all time favorite Raider, "The Judge", Lester Hayes. He is sitting on the sideline shaking his head in digust, disbelief, and awe of facing a young John Elway. talking to anybody who would listen."It's unbelievable. You turn your head, and the ball is just there. UnBelievable." Jamarcus can do that. He can thread the needle. He can throw the football like nobody's business.

Now, there is obviously a lot more to playing pro QB than the physical act of throwing the ball. Besides his off field problems, Jamarcus has holes in his game. He needs to utilize pump fakes, and learn to look off safeties. Those are the finer arts of playing QB that most young QB's struggle with.

Remember, Jamarcus came out early. He is raw, and still very young. He is roughtly the same age as incoming rookies. With all of Russells trials and tribulations, many of them brought on by himself, I can understand fans being disapointed. Some even to the point of being disgusted. But the level of vitriol and even hatred directed at this kid, by Raider "fans", I find puzzling. And a little sad.

Watch the link to the highlight someone posted on here. You can see the potential is there. Now he has to hone it. Hopefully, the kid has heard his wake up call. Early indications are, according to Jerry, looking encouraging.
Fair, and open competition. I hope these guys push each other to the limit. Let the best man win.

Seymour,

That’s why I specifically stated the end of the year in there, too… because there were still inaccurate throws to WRs at the end of the season when JR came in as relief for Frye. This is after the young WRs proved that they know the routes playing with Grads and Frye… yet the ball and the WR end up in two different places.

Did the WRs regress and forget their routes whenever JR was in the game? Did the WRs intentionally run the wrong routes when JR was in the game? Or does JR just have a problem with knowing where the WR will be/not able to control his throws?
================================================

I would probably say a little of "A" and a little of "B". Russell has GOT to play faster. If he played faster, he would be NIGHT AND DAY better.
That was the lst thing Gruden worked on when he got here. He got the players to practice faster, get the plays in faster, execute faster. He wanted that play off with 25 seconds left on the play clock. Remember, not only was Russell a rookie, but Kiffin was a rookie HC and play caller at the same time, who got replaced by another rookie HC and playcaller. Rookies are going to make mistakes whether they are players OR coaches. To some extent the plays coming in were probably fukked up, or did not get in on time. The difference might be that Grads or Frye were more prepared to just call a play if that happened.
