Russell out, Bennett (and McFadden) in

The Raiders officially confirmed the release of quarterback JaMarcus Russell Thursday on the “transactions” on Raiders.com, while also announcing the signing of running back Michael Bennett.
A nine-year NFL veteran, Bennett had an impressive minicamp (considering there was no tackling) and appeared to be at least the equal of Rock Cartwright as the Raiders look to replace Justin Fargas in the running back rotation behind Darren McFadden and Michael Bush (or vice versa).
If the Raiders’ Web site is any indication, Bush is the leader to be the starting running back.
In the upper left-hand corner (while facing your computer) on the lead page of Raiders.com, a McFadden figure has replaced Russell above that of quarterback Jim Plunkett.

Bush averaged just under FIVE YARDS A CARRY!
Averaged 5 yards a carry and 50 yards at halftime of Cleveland…and the offensive coordinator gives him 1 carry the rest of the game while allowing Charlie Frye to heave the ball 40x
The running game…hell the entire offense…will be back to competent now that we have a real coach teaching them

Fargas is the only one of the three that has decent pass protection skills. Bush blocks like he’s 180 lbs and DMac doesn’t seem to get the scheme yet to adjust to blitzes quickly. I don’t see Bennett fixing this either since his specialty is more of a 3rd down back.
If you focus on nothing but rushing numbers to evaluate RBs, then you could use a little more football analysis in your diet. Bush gets all his carries in situations where coach decides they’re going to run the ball. The other team picks up on that pretty quickly. And he comes out of the game when the team needs to come from behind, further limiting his uselessness.
My hope is that the release of Fargas is a show of faith in the maturation of at least one of Bush or DMac in their complete RB package.

It is now apparent the JaBustus was not willing to restructure his contract. That’s just one more thing that demonstrates that JaBustus really is a dumb-schit. He’s not Southern slow he’s just a DUMB SOB who has just tossed away any future he might have had in the NFL. I have to believe that had he been willing to restructure, AD would have kept him around one more year.

The Raiders have to get out of the business of STARTING players that are fringe players….Fargas and guys like him are either out of the league or trying to get it on as a backup.
as for pass protection…coach those guys up to pass protect….if the coaches can’t get BOTH of them to pass protect…get new coaches.

What a GREAT day for us Raider Fans. We’ve gotten rid of a fat, lingering, cancer which had “no cure in sight.”
Al, we all make mistakes and picking JaMoron at the time seemed the correct pick…the future John Elway. No way of knowing that he was too dumb and too lazy to exploit his potential, if he had any. The money went to his fat head and his desire for triple cheeseburgers and chili cheese fries couldn’t be controlled.
Thank you Al for taking the hit and cutting our loses. We can only go upwards from here. Go Raiders…9 and 7.

Ya, piss on Russell’s agent. He screwed us with his long greedy contract issues and it results in that late start for JaMoron (which on hindsight wouldn’t have mattered much as fat-ass showed that he only wanted to eat and spend more on fur coats and diamond earrings).
I don’t believe in what goes around comes around. It just sounds good but in reality the good die young and the bad seem to get the breaks. However, a little bad “karma” going their way (JaMoron and his piss face agent) would be welcomed.

Louis Murphy is showing signs of that on O, Zach Miller a good spokespearson, J Campbell needs to be the leader Bruce was not neccesarily in the the same fiery way. On D is Mike Mitchell can stay on the field long enough he definately has the fire as does Branch. Mcclain is a leader at LB, Seymour on the DL, Houston has the right nastiness, Nnamdi is a good role model

Once the JaDavis comparisons became a moot point….everyone realizes that Bruce is a good team player…..but is not a 16 game starter…
I actually think its the workout injury that brought reality to the assessment of Bruce…

I am not against the T.O. Pickup. Seems that the NATION is going in a diffrent direction, decisions based on thinking, and logic… Doing whats best for the team and not one idividuals idea of how things should/ used to be….

You guys need to read this – an article written on April 25, 2007, BEFORE the 2007 NFL draft, on a site called blogcritics.org. The author writes the article from the perspective of the future, the year 2011, looking back at the biggest bust of the draft that year, JaMarcus Russell of the Cleveland Browns. Sounds like a gimmick, but it’s amazing how many of the things came true:
CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Browns, ending an era of missed opportunities and frustration for fans and players alike, released JaMarcus Russell today. The third pick of the 2007 draft never met the lofty expectations placed on him by a desperate community.
When Russell first shook hands with Phil Savage and Romeo Crennel in front of the assembled Cleveland media in 2007, his potential was as massive as his frame. Even Crennel, a former defensive lineman, stood in awe of Russell’s body. “He’s a biggun, isn’t he?” joked Crennel.
Russell’s arm was legend before the draft. He showed off before the 2007 Sugar Bowl by throwing the ball nearly the length of the field and then sitting on the turf to throw another ball 40 yards. Lesser men tried to catch a Russell Express and earned broken fingers for their trouble.
Stuart Scott, carefully keeping his distance from the demonstration, noted to an ESPN colleague that Russell was fully capable of bettering Daunte Culpepper’s best days. Scott creatively nicknamed Russell the Brown Cannon. While Russell was somewhat inexperienced compared to Brady Quinn, a fellow 2007 draftee, his athleticism provided a future previously unimaginable for Cleveland fans: a positive one.
The first hint of trouble came only two days later. The press conference introducing Russell came after a contract was agreed to but before it was formally signed. While both sides blamed the other, sources from both sides suggest Eric Metz, Russell’s agent, encouraged Russell to press his advantage. Minor contract requests regarding entourages, locker room amenities, and a request for a steady stream of Vanilla Oreos turned into an extended holdout.
While Russell did eventually report to camp, it was far too late to learn the playbook in time to play more than a few downs in the last preseason game and observe for most of another miserable Browns campaign. His first start as a professional in Week 17 ended in a cascade of boos as he failed to complete more than half his passes and was sacked four times in a 42-14 loss to the Packers.
From there, Russell walked a well-worn path to failure. Hurt feelings from Browns fans that expect their stars to understand the privilege of playing in Cleveland never truly subsided. Perhaps the lowest point came when a snowball that hit him in the helmet at Paul Brown Stadium led to a verbal confrontation with a fan in front of the fan’s four-year-old girl that required numerous half-hearted apologies to finally move on from. A false positive for a controlled substance (implied to be marijuana) leaked to the press only confirmed stereotypes for the angry Browns fan.
On the field, Russell never improved his college style of play, holding the ball much longer than feasible for a pro quarterback and relying on his cannon. He never mastered the playbook, which was trimmed back numerous times to give more opportunities for mastery. He spent most of his last two seasons looking up from either the turf or a trainer’s table. His oblique injury in Week 12 this season was almost a relief, knocking him out for the rest of the season.
With his athletic build and rocket arm still intact, a few teams are believed to be interested in Russell. His new agent, Leigh Steinberg, insists his client has turned over a new leaf and has been working out with a new trainer this offseason. The Chicago Bears, looking at their fourth new Week 1 starting quarterback in five years, are expected to be the lead suitor.
