Raiders top-10 draft busts since 1970

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, May 6th, 2010 at 3:15 pm in Oakland Raiders.

A list of the top 10 Raiders’ first-round busts since the start of the merged draft in 1970:

1_JaMarcus Russell, QB, LSU, 2007 (No. 1 overall)

The new standard-bearer for his position, league-wide. Al Davis loves tradition, but this isn’t the kind of history he had in mind.

Who else was available: WR Calvin Johnson, Georgia Tech (Detroit), No. 2; RB Adrian Peterson, Oklahoma (Minnesota), No. 7; LB Patrick Willis, Mississippi (San Francisco), No. 11.

2_Todd Marinovich, QB, USC, 1991 (No. 24 overall)

Probably unfair to rate a No. 24 pick this high, but take a look at who went No. 33. Marinovich was beset by drug issues which plagued him long after he was out of the league.

Who else was available: DT Ted Washington, Louisville (Buffalo) No. 25; QB Brett Favre, Southern Mississippi (Atlanta), No. 33.

3_Bob Buczkowski, DE, Pitt, 1986 (No. 24 overall)

Played in a grand total of two games and had one sack for the Raiders in 1987. Was arrested for running a prostitution ring in 2005.

Who else was available: RB Neal Anderson, Florida (Chicago), No. 27; LB Pepper Johnson, Ohio State (New York Giants), No. 51.

4_John Clay, OT, Missouri, 1987 (No. 15 overall)

Started nine games as a rookie, and the Raiders shipped him to San Diego along with two high draft choices for Jim Lachey. Clay played one year and was out of the league. The Raiders eventually sent Lachey, a dominant left tackle, to Washington for Jay Schroeder in one of their worst all-time trades.

Who else was available: OT Harris Barton, North Carolina, (49ers), No. 22; QB Jim Harbaugh, Michigan (Chicago), No. 26.

5_Patrick Bates, safety, Texas A&M, 1993, (No. 12 overall)

The 1993 version of Taylor Mays, Bates looked the part, but walked away from the Raiders the week before their season opener for reasons never fully explained.

Who else was available: RB Robert Smith, Ohio State (Minnesota), No. 21; DT Dana Stubblefield, Kansas (49ers), No. 26.

6_Matt Stinchcomb, tackle, Georgia, 1999 (No. 18 overall)

Considered a `safe’ pick for a team needing a tackle, Stinchcomb arrived with a serious shoulder injury. He was unsuccessfully tried as a starter at tackle, center and guard.

Who else was available: CB Antoine Winfield, Ohio State (Minnesota), No. 23; DE Patrick Kerney, Virginia (Atlanta), No. 29

7_Marc Wilson, quarterback, BYU, 1980 (No. 15 overall)

Measure his 31-19 won-loss record against Raiders QBs of the last seven years and he’s a wild success. In the era of great Raiders teams, he was reviled.

Who else was available: WR Art Monk, Syracuse (Washington), No. 18; RB Joe Cribbs, Auburn, Buffalo (No. 29)

No. 8_Derrick Gibson, safety, Florida State (No. 28 overall)

Another look-the-part safety, who, like Bates, didn’t have the instinct or coverage ability to excel. Coach Jon Gruden wanted and scouts wanted Todd Heap.

Who else was available: WR Reggie Wayne, Miami (Indianapolis), No. 30; TE Todd Heap, Arizona State (Baltimore), No. 31; QB Drew Brees, Purdue (San Diego), No. 32; DE Kyle VandenBosch, Nebraska (Arizona), No. 34.

No. 9_Phillip Buchanon, cornerback, Miami (No. 17 overall)

Provided big plays and touchdowns as a cornerback and return man, but gave up even more, then mysteriously lost his punt return ability. Was eventually traded to Houston.

Who else was available: S Ed Reed, Miami (Baltimore), No. 22; DE Charles Grant, Georgia (New Orleans) No. 25.

No. 10_To be determined . . . but with Russell gone, the pressure is on running back Darren McFadden (No. 4 overall in 2008) and wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey (No. 7 in 2009) to perform.

I would have preferred westbrook as well, although I think Bennett has less mileage on him and he may have been cheaper. I’m sure Al ain’t feelin’ too flush at the moment.

What are people’s thought on Lane at USC?

    ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

    HERE’S SOME THOUGHTS FROM ESQUIRE:

    It’s getting serious.

Former UT football coach Lane Kiffin has advanced to the Sweet 16 in Esquire’s “Sexiest Woman Alive” poll.

Kiffin lapped NASCAR’s Danica Patrick to move ahead in the readers’ poll styled after the NCAA basketball tournament. The new USC coach took down the mannish driver by a final tally of 56 percent of the vote to 44 percent. The obviously sexier Kiffin led most of the way as Esquire posted ongoing results, though Patrick briefly led by the slimmest of margins midway in the second round. The victory was by the same margin as Kiffin’s first-round pounding of curvaceous golfer Natalie Gulbis.

Kiffin is still standing in the poll along with other sexy women such as Jessica Alba, Anne Hathaway, Christina Hendricks and Heidi Klum. Kiffin, competing in the Sports division, apparently will next face Heather Mitts of the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team. Yeah, we didn’t know her either, and after looking her up, we have to say Mitts looks pretty beatable. And when we say “looks pretty,” we mean “looks goofy.”

If you don’t understand why Lane Kiffin is in a “Sexiest Woman Alive” poll, we can’t help you. And if you don’t understand why we think this is funny, no one can help you.

We’ll just say we’re proud to know UT hired the first woman head coach of an NCAA Division I football team. We’ve licked our wounds from her abandonment of us in January, and now we support her in her sexiest challenge yet.

The question now: Kiffin’s sweet, but is she elite? Find out when voting in the Sweet 16 starts Monday, May 10, at Esquire.com.

I think Bennett will be our best back on some weekends.

Once McFalldown is furthur exposed and Bush is in his twinkle-toes mood, it will be nice to see Bennett in there, just like at times it was nice to see Fargas in there.
    =================================================
Stop it! Just stop! Bush didn’t get enough carries to say he was twinkle toes…when they gave him the ball he was a bull…only struggled against the Ravens..but they have a boss run defense.

DMAC has been misused….use him in space or on runs with three WR sets and the defense is spread out…..

Justin Fargas did jack….Bennet is the 3rd string 5 carry max back..

Hue Jackson will fix this here mess real quick. Bush can be a 1300 yard rusher…and DMAC in space will display his quickness….Tom Cable was a baffooon at offensive coordinator.

And no one is missing Fargas’ 2 yard carries.

Bush averaged just under FIVE YARDS A CARRY!

Averaged 5 yards a carry and 50 yards at halftime of Cleveland…and the offensive coordinator gives him 1 carry the rest of the game while allowing Charlie Frye to heave the ball 40x

The running game…hell the entire offense…will be back to competent now that we have a real coach teaching them

    5. Cut Cornell Green
    6. Replace Tom Cable (relieved of OC duties)

    6. Bench Carlisle
    7. Cut / restructure Tommy Kelly
    8. Sign or trade for big NT – (Haynesworth, Henderson, Rogers, Jenkins)
    9. Start Murphy / Schilens, JLH #3…DHB #4 or practice squad

Too much logic taking place to be otherwise.
Was Mr. Davis under attack by the NFL?
Was a potential hostile take over in the mix? unlikely
Did the NFL pressure or strong arm Mr. Davis into
    “cleaning up” the debacle?

More to this than meets the eye…

    =====

Fargas is the only one of the three that has decent pass protection skills. Bush blocks like he’s 180 lbs and DMac doesn’t seem to get the scheme yet to adjust to blitzes quickly. I don’t see Bennett fixing this either since his specialty is more of a 3rd down back.

If you focus on nothing but rushing numbers to evaluate RBs, then you could use a little more football analysis in your diet. Bush gets all his carries in situations where coach decides they’re going to run the ball. The other team picks up on that pretty quickly. And he comes out of the game when the team needs to come from behind, further limiting his uselessness.

My hope is that the release of Fargas is a show of faith in the maturation of at least one of Bush or DMac in their complete RB package.
