Jumping to some Raiders conclusions

Jumping to some conclusions before enjoying a family Mother’s Day outing heading into a week where I’m prohibited from posting (it’s technically called a vacation, although I’m not going anywhere):

– It’s come to my attention that a lot of people have a difficult time comprehending the written word.

To summarize:

JaMarcus Russell may have been a bust anyway. Probably would have been one, in fact. I believe I duly noted his deficiencies. We may learn at some point his issues go far beyond simply being, as Gary Peterson put it, lethargy addicted. Or perhaps not.

But anyone who doesn’t understand Russell walked into the absolute worst situation possible with the Raiders ought to sit back and order another Kool-Aid.

And make it a double.

– Yes, putting Russell on waivers was a good thing (hard to believe no one picked him up at the bargain price of $9.45 million). The very definition of addition by subtraction, it followed a sensible offseason free agency plan and a widely acclaimed draft as perhaps the best Raiders offseason in years.

Fan groups were calling for the head of Al Davis and even putting it on billboards around the Coliseum. Read some of the national press of late, and if there was an award for comeback executive of the year, Davis would be the leading candidate.

Can’t say I disagree, but there are still some major areas of concern.

The two biggest issues are the most important in the sport _ blocking and tackling. Love what they attempted with the latter (Rolando McClain, Lamarr Houston), but am wondering how much they did with the former in terms of immediate help (Jared Veldheer, Bruce Campbell).

– A third are of concern _ the corps of Raiders wide receivers were woefully thin with the absence of Chaz Schilens (recovering from foot surgery) and Louis Murphy (sprained ankle).

Terrell Owens, anyone?

Offer him an incentive-laden contract and cut him at the first sign of trouble and there’s considerably more reward potential than risk.

– Another break for the Raiders in an offseason that just keeps on giving. Houston linebacker Brian Cushing, the NFL’s defensive rookie of the year who was suspended for violating the league policy on performance-enhancing drugs, will serve four-game suspension. The Texans’ fourth game is in Oakland.

– Baltimore tackle Jared Gaither has been officially moved aside in favor of Michael Oher and would seem to be available by trade. Gaither will likely start on the right side for the Ravens but could be available by trade. Since the Raiders blew the chance to have Oher as their left tackle, instead drafting Darrius Heyward-Bey, might they inquire about Gaither?

It depends on how much of a hard sell Hue Jackson gives to Davis. Jackson was on the Ravens’ coaching staff and knows Gaither well, and by all appearances at the mandatory minicamp, has taken control of the Raiders offense.

– Condolences to former Raiders linebacker Kirk Morrison, who has made repeated poignant references to the death of his grandmother on his Twitter account, traveling back to the Bay Area for funeral services.

– An e-mailer sent along statistical evidence to support the contention that Darren McFadden goes down too easily, while advancing the cause of Michael Bush.

According to profootallfocus.com statistics, Bush ranked second in the NFL behind Kansas City’s Jamal Charles with 3.4 yards per carry after first contact. McFadden was ranked 38th out of 61 qualifiers at 2.4 yards after contact, which was actually a slight improvement from his 2.1 figure as a rookie.

Situations change with down and distance and other variables, but it’s at least worth noting . . .

– More evidence that nothing is at it seems in the NFL _ in this Los Angeles Time article, Mike Lombardi supports the Raiders and Lane Kiffin supports JaMarcus Russell . . .

– Loved columnist Gary Peterson’s take on a rookie cap and the JaMarcus rule . . .

– Here’s Monte Poole writing in today’s paper about Al’s fixer-upper being more intriguing to potential minority partners.

– Be back in a week, with Steve Corkran chiming in from time to time in my absence . . .

    BoSJack,

when interviewed after the game, Senhor Perfecto Dallas Braden said that the Hall of Fame had already called about items from the game but they will be left will what they can find as Braden is going to donate his cap, glove and spikes to his hometown’s (Stockton, Ca.)HOF and the game ball is going to his grandmother who helped raise him.

    NeilB,

once the oil spew in the Gulf of Mexico hits the right current sweeping past Florida Pete’s house and then swings northward it’ll eventually come toward the British Isles. The volcano should still be spitting as well. Soon you’ll be surrounded! (Hope you don’t own stock in BP.)

There should be a poll: What team is going to pick up jaMarcus Russell, if any?

  • RaiderRockstar

trade Nick Miller & Marcel Reece for a cricket!

  • jhill

Houston and Shaugnessy at ends solves the run to the edge problem that a few of you are still struggling to grasp.

I’ll take Seymour, Kelly, and McClain vs. ANY G-C-G combination in the league!

and who says Seymour is playing DT full-time? he got the DE franchise tag – which is way more expensive than the DT tag …

    Off for some dinner.

    Have a great Monday everyone.

  • On the beach in Cancun

With Campbell in control at the helm, look for Zack Miller to have a big year, a pro bowl type year. The kid is a monster with heart, makes the catch and hangs on to the tamale. Go buy you #80 jersey now before they’re all gone.

By the way, GOOD MORNING RAIDER NATION.

  • RaiderRockstar

everybody wanted us to go get C Duke Preston last year, remember?

After 4 seasons with the Bills, they chose not to re-sign him and he became a free agent.

spent some time with GB & Dallas. now has retired

good thing we didn’t make a play for him!

Seymour is NOT going to be blocked one on one by ANY G or C in the league. 2 guys on Seymour leaves Kelly one on one and McClain filling holes. Good luck Mr FB, lol!

Seymour is going to be at all 4 positions.

  • On the beach in Cancun

Looking at our schedule this year, we better improve big time if we expect to go 500 or better. They’re some opponents who are on the upgrade as well. The “key” I believe will be in our on division and how we do, starting with the dischargers. On the plus side there, they have Norv Turner to contend with. He might be all that, but he’s never impressed me, especially when he had the helm here in Oakland.

Jhill: if Seymour was such a force against the run, how come we finished 29th in the league in run defense?

same goes for Kelly, Bryant, Joseph, Shaughnessy, etc.

    Kirk Morrison? LOL!

  • http://www.mailmachineshouston.com mikeschoice

the only one drinking the kool aid is you Jerry. Making excuses for Russell’s bismal performance while Bruce Almighty proved otherwise in the same games with the same recievers, coaches, line etc… puts you with OLD man AL the enabler……. ala Randy Moss “We could’nt satisfy him” screw that you paid him -he’s a pro -he didn’t satisfy us the fans – or Warren THE SAPP-It’s time to quit paying these prima donnas and listening to thier excuses for non performance or letting them bad mouth the organization. I believe Tom Cable finally got AL’s ear and convinced him via last seasons exhibition of Bruce outperforming Jamarcus that ATTITUDE is the problem like he’s been preaching since day one in turning this thing around. This is a team sport and individual CIRCUS acts must go and they won’t work well on any sucessful team. And Randy Moss won’t get that Ring cause he’s another selfish punk!

    :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

I believe it was linebacker play, and some weak play by the ends. Also, line rotation was not deep enough resulting in gassed players late in the game.

    Good morning You People!

  • http://morbidanatomy.com A.B. Paine II

The Chiefs should pick up Russell as a third stringer so they can stick it to the Raiders just in case he ever develops.

  • http://atm Raider O

    We did improve our Defense:

    We added:
1- The Best MLB in this draft.
2- Base End/ DT who was rated as a top 10 DL in this draft, and should be the starter at LE by mid season.
    3- CB (Jhill)

    I like it!

you mean abysmal performance? or bismal as in pepto bismol because watching him play gives you an upset stomach?

Bruce was decent, but he was a world beater. If he was, we wouldn’t have traded for Jason Campbell.

Bruce played against the Steelers, Bengals, Cowboys, Chiefs & Redskins. those last two were half games – so really just 4 FULL games. 1 quarter of a season

threw 3 INT’s and lost 3 fumbles. so 6 TD’s & 6 turnovers isn’t exactly profound, but it’s impressive enough for a 3rd sting journeyman type to basically go 2-2 when called upon

And so do the coaches who actually broke down all the film. We have THREE new LBs this year and 2 new starters on the Dline.

FIVE of the front 7 guys have been replaced RRS. Including your boy Morrison and my boy Warren.

    Let’s move forward!

    Exactly RRS …

The biggest thing about the Russell release to me is the APPEARANCE that things that were allowed when he came into the organization are NO LONGER tolerated.

If one of our rookies came in this year and was sleeping in meetings, I think it would be addressed as oppossed to what was allowed to fester with Russell, Woodson, and all the other players who didn’t respect the coaches because of the “Al dynamic”.

    CB (Jhill)

    Jhill,

I agree that we needed a CB, but I didn’t want us to draft one in the top 3 RDs. I’m very happy with our draft. I give it an A-.
