Ice Cube: Raiders will always belong to L.A.

By Jon Becker
Tuesday, May 11th, 2010 at 11:08 am in Oakland Raiders.

Don’t forget to check out ESPN at 5 p.m. PDT today for the showing of “Straight Outta L.A.,” Ice Cube’s documentary about the Raiders in Los Angeles.
Our Chuck Barney has seen the piece and here’s what he thinks.
Chuck points out that Ice Cube has this to say about Oakland’s NFL team: “The silver and black might call another place home, but the Raiders will always belong to L.A.”
What do you guys think?

It is no coincidence that Al hired Hue, a coach that comes from a well run professional organization and suddenly we have a draft that looks like it was done by a well run professional organization.

There is a reason Hue Jackson turned down the Bears OC position for the Raiders…he has been given some enticement to get him to come to Oakland…Al knew he could get Hue on as OC on the cheap and then not have to fire Cable and pay two HCs this season. Hue knows Cable is on thin ice and that in all likelihood Cable will be out after 2010 and Hue will be in the catbird’s seat to take over.

Cable is a better fit for this team than any coach since Gruden.
    +++++++

First, that is not saying much, even if it were true and second, just because we are on a down turn the past seven years doesn’t mean we should look for a coach that is also a good fit because of his perchance for losing (20-44 record as a HC).

  10. lefty12 Says:

Pure conjuncture on your part,Dakota-and wishful thinking I believe.

  11. DMAC Says:

    OAKLAND RAIDERS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. Dakota Says:

    Ice Cube is right.

The Raiders belong in LA. Oakland fans can’t afford to go to the games. At least those who show up in LA have a buck or two to buy a hotdog. And once Al is gone and Marc sells the team and the team is moved into the new LA stadium we will finally be an attractive destination for quality free agents, not these mentally unstable or injury riddled losers that are simply looking for one last sucker to give them a contract that we get in Oakland.

  13. RaiderRockstar Says:

Agreed. the Raider belong in Oakland

    … or Podunk!

    HAHAHA

KC & STL have NFL teams already.

  18. 24 Says:

I’m happy the Raiders have history in L.A. because it grew our fan base in socal and for that, we dominate California in fans and its great because the Charger/Raider games in San Diego become Oakland South…thats awesome.

Once again Dakota speaks out of his a$$.While they may move back to la-la land when Davis dies, they SHOULD remain in Oakland.

    ++++++++++++

Wrong. Al ran out of the money he got for selling a portion of the team in 2007. That is why we haven’t signed any big money loser FAs the last two seasons.

  27. JustWinBaby Says:

Since when has Cable became the GM? He has a say but lets get real here…

  28. JustWinBaby Says:

The Raiders should just kick the Chargers out of San Diego and take over the city. I’d be happy with that. The Chargers could go to Arizona or something.

  33. lefty12 Says:

  36. cfrylopez Says:

I repect and have love for the LA Raider fans after all we’re all one nation. But the Raiders belong in their birth place Oakland CA. Home of the counter-culture, Black Panther, Hell’s Angels, Ebonics, the Free Speech movement, Crack, Medical Marijuana,Barbara Lee (the only Crongress person to try to stand up to Bush after 911). When I grew up and the Raiders where in LA I still whore Oakland Raiders Gear, I use to listen to all the Jake the Snake stories from my dad. After Our first game back in Oakland in 95 Magic Johnson said, ” The Raiders belong in Oakland”

  41. Dakota Says:

I’ll believe Cable had something to do with this offseason the day Al calls a presser and praises Cable for his contributions and gives him credit for everything.

Until then Lefty is just speculating.

  42. JustWinBaby Says:

No becuase he is changing the losing ass culture. The players believe in him. He had the worst fn quaterback over half the season etc etc. He is doing ok. This yr there are no excuses i must admit. Average schedule, pieces in place…Who would u rather have as coach?

  43. Dakota Says:

    GOOOOO LA RAIDERS!!!!!!

  44. Seymour Bush Says:

LA was the demise of the Raider franchise.

  45. JustWinBaby Says:

Since Cable has came along there is something different. I think he is one person that can actually fit in Oakland with Uncel Al.

  46. lefty12 Says:

Cable slapped his wife over 20 years ago, admits he made a mistake and Dakota holds it against him forever.Yet he defends someone who sexually assaults/rapes someone like Bryant and Ben.

  47. Dakota Says:

    JustWinBaby,

Well, Cable has certainly painted himself into a corner by claiming we would have made the playoffs if he didn’t have to deal with Russell…now Russell is out and his excuse is gone, so if we don’t make the playoffs Cable should resign the day the season ends.

It doesn’t matter to me where the Raiders play. Just as long as it’s a nice stadium without any infield cut-outs.

Perhaps twenty years ago, Cable’s wife told him Dakota’s Greatest Lie…

  51. the_big_one_of_83 Says:

this shtt started in oakland and they came back home for a reason

  52. SilverAndBlackBleeder Says:

I can’t lie, being an 80’s baby, it was Tim Brown, Marcus Allen, Howie Long, Bo Jackson, the fact I loved playing with the Raiders on Tecmo Bowl, their colors, their mystique, and their place in the hip hop culture that made me fall in love with the Raiders myself as a youngster. And I grew up in the NorthEast where everyone was either a Giants/Jets/Pats fan. Even though I’m sure Cube is gonna have a lot of bias being from LA, I still can’t wait to watch tonight’s documentary.

  53. Oaktown Hustler Says:

Ice Cube is a punk ass b*tch! If that L.A. pansy ever comes up to Oaktown, I will be the first to get gansta on his fat ass.

  54. Dakota Says:

Lefty, only someone who has hit a woman before defends wife beaters…you fit that bill huh?

Show me one example where I ever supported a convicted rapist….oh you can’t can you! Sorry bro.

  55. JustWinBaby Says:

I dont know about resign but i do believe that this yr if we dont win at least 8 or 9 games its a total dissapointment and that will start with Cable. ‘The AFC is so tough i wanna start preaching playoffs but imma start with saying they need to win 8 or 9 games

  56. crister Says:

Being from Oakland, I’m glad they came back home. Whether it has or will work out in the end who knows,…

About 6 years ago while visiting my wife’s family in the Eastern part of Germany in a small town of about 30000 that was 80% destroyed during the war, I came across a Los Angeles Raiders cap in a rinky dink CD store in the main town sqquare. Of course I had to buy it. And on another trip to Naples Italy, I road the local subway and sitting across from me was a older man with a Raiders jacket.

Oakland or LA, one thing is for sure, the Raider brand is in fact global.

  57. raideredoutL.A. Says:

raiders could stay in oak for all i care. no blackouts here, plus i can always go to games when i want in oak or sd and arizona this year.

  58. DMAC Says:

I was born and raised in Oakland, and have to admit growing up an LA Raider fan. Don’t hate LA Raider fans, it just made us a stronger nation. Just glad the Oakland Raiders are back where they belong!

  59. Zymurge Says:

Is this article even worth the virtual paper that it’s written on? Now we have Jerry playing troll and adding fuel just to stir crap up.

Does anyone give a crap what Ice Cube has to say anyway? Let’s throw his ass in a cage match with MC Hammer — a proud OAKLAND Raiders supporter — and let Cube know that he can’t touch this!

  60. SilverAndBlackBleeder Says:

And moving to Louisville, KY made it even worse, ’cause there ain’t nothing but Colts, Bears, Browns, Rams and Titan fans there. I’ve been a Silver&Black loner my whole life until I finally moved out here to SoCal after college. And a lot of what Cube is gonna say tonight should be right on the money, ’cause it’s that Raider mystique that made me proud as a fan and felt like I was always stronger than the rest of the bunches around me throughout my life.

I doubt Ice Cube is saying that the Raiders truly belong to L.A. and NOT Oakland. I think he means that even though they’re gone and Oakland is their home, L.A. remains a part of their history & vice versa, so they will always belong to L.A. just as they belong to Oakland.

After all, isn’t that what Raider Nation is all about? I grew up in So. Cal while the Raiders were in L.A. and moved to San Jose in 2001, but the bottom line is that I’m not an L.A. or Oakland fan, I’m a Raiders fan.

  66. Braveheartraider Says:

first NFL game I saw was SB XVIII. Loved the black uniform cause it kinda reminded me of the Mean Machine. They were the LA Raiders then but you always heard about the old days in Oakland. Seems like Oakland is the wife and LA’s the mistress. Sooner or later you have to make a choice. I thought the choice was made but with the new stadium being built LA is hitching up her skirt again to see if the Raiders take notice.
I’ve got no alegience to either city so I don’t care. One nation I suppose.

  67. Oaktown Hustler Says:

Just don’t be coming up in my hood sporting any L.A. Raider gear.

  68. Bo Schembechler Jackson Says:

The Raiders should play a game or two in Dodger Stadium just to acknowledge their disparate fan base. But they are home in Oakland. The LA Colisseum was just SO DAMN WEAK!

  69. raideredoutL.A. Says:

raiders should have one game here in L.A. once a year, but oh wait, we have the charger game in sd where we always outnumber them.lol

  70. SilverAndBlackBleeder Says:

Well said Dokie……..I moved to Cali about 4 years ago, but I grew up back East (CT, Long Island, and Kentucky – hell of a trio huh? Lol), and I’ve always been proud to see other members of the Raider Nation out and about….Raider road games out that way were so much fun ’cause you know Raider fans are fans that really give a crap about each other so you always feel at home.

  78. Legacy510 Says:

Dakota you have no say so in this at all. You can argue about Mt. Rushmore or something, but leave Raider history alone.

Bottom Line… The Raiders have been in existence for 50 years.

LA Raiders-13 years, 1 superbowl appearance resulting in 1 Championship.

Oakland Raiders-37 years, 4 superbowl appearances resulting in 2 championships.

You do the math. Nuff said.

  79. PDXRaider Says:

In 92′(in L.A.) four gangbangers told me to shut up while wearing their Cowboys gear. In Oakland that would never happen. In Oaktown, everyone in any section would have stood up and had my back. L.A. sucks in every way, so does ice cube.

  80. A.B. Paine II Says:

From 17 years of sellouts with the Mad Bomber, Snake, the Mad Stork, etc to a half emtpy stadium with the likes of Jay Schroeder and Bob Buckowski… PUH-LEASE!! LA is also where the organization lost it’s blue-collar Eastbay roots and turned into the Halloween freak show which continues to this day because of the clowns who travel north for games. I do appreciate and like the idea that Ice is a Raider fan, but c’mon homey, when you’re up visiting the Bay just enjoy you’re brief respite from the the Third World.

The post-1982 Raiders were outlaws?? You coulda fooled me. The 1968-1980, or so, Raiders were outlaws, renegades, colorful, and interesting. The Raiders were the best at it, but other teams had really interesting guys like that – and really interesting owners too. Those guys in LA were plain vanilla choir boys compared to the earlier teams. Maybe a guy here and there since then could have hung with those earlier guys, but they were (and are) few and far between.

The league legislated parity, they got it, and the NFL has been full of boring teams (and boring owners) ever since.

It also shows the need for Hue Jackson.

Oakland has run big plays and it seems like you never see them again and you see plays that don’t work over and over.

    What up NATION????

Was the only one on this blog to say that we would have a logical draft.

How logical was the pickup of campbell, which I was the first to pop off about that, and took much heat.

The good thing is most of the league thinks the raiders are going to be business as usual.

    Its not just about having Mr. Davis ear, it may be that;

    1. Heat from the league to clean up the mess.
    2. Heat from a potential hostile take over.
    3. Premptive strike by the NFL.

Like I have been saying “other forces” are at work here.

  148. Thec07 Says:

I admit a bias to the Raiders being named Oakland Raiders, but the Raiders are not just a local team.

The Riaders are actually their own Nation….

the first and only Nation in all of sports….

So if Mr. Davis chages the name to Raider Nation
    That would be more fitting…

  149. Thec07 Says:

The most telling thing about the change in dynamics of the org will be the play calling on offense and defense. Like most here would suggest MR. Davis will have zero impact on play calling offense or defense.

Other forces are at work here….

  150. RaiderMight Says:

I’m happy the Raiders have history in L.A. because it grew our fan base in socal and for that, we dominate California in fans and its great because the Charger/Raider games in San Diego become Oakland South…thats awesome.

  151. On the beach in Cancun Says:

I grew up in LA and became a Raiders fan before they moved to LA.

The move to LA was great, especially after winning the 1983 Super Bowl. The Los Angeles fans (most) embraced
the Raiders and the love affair began. Why not, the Raiders were a great team then and won their fair share of games. Most fans (including myself) got tired of the lies from the politicians and we were not surprised when Al finally gave up on the 2nd biggest market (LA) and moved back to the smaller Oakland base. Al just needed to move and Oakland got lucky. If they had to leave LA, most LA fans were happy they went back to Oakland.

As for you Oakland fans who are happy that the Raiders returned to Oakland, you can thank the “political, Los Angeles Coliseum Commission,” which was made up of politican appointment from the Mayor. The Coliseum Commission had promised Al Davis renovations and executive suites, which they never delivered on. It was broken promise after broken promise with politicians more interested in re-election, and re-appointment, rather than spending tax-payer money on renovations. After 13 years and some law suits, Al gave up and came back to Oakland.

Note: as you all know, Oakland broke numerous promises as well and Al has taken the city to court more than once. And, for that reason, Al is “OPEN” to moving again in the future should the opportunity present itself. Obviously that’s my opinion only.

  197. GhostofDaveCasper Says:

The Raiders will always be associated with Oakland, Ice Cube’s bravado and an L.A. fanbase notwithstanding. Their roots are in Oakland, their greatest years took place in Oakland, and they are back in Oakland, where they belong and will hopefully remain. The move to L.A. was (yet another) mistake by Davis, who seems to get bored when he doesn’t have a controversy swirling around him. The litigation with the NFL, the mostly empty, massive stadium down there, the gang associations, the threats to move again to Irwindale (your Irwindale Raiders, everyone!) was embarrassing, even though they won a Super Bowl. “L.A. Raiders” always sounded too Hollywood. But the OAKLAND Raiders. Now that has a nice ring to it.

  198. fat kidd Says:

the raiders never belonged To L.A. you just borrowed them

  199. Coach on Wheels Says:

I’ve been a Raiders fan since I was a kid watching Snake, Tatum, Hayes and Hendericks. One thing I keep reading from younger fans that the move to LA “grew the fan base” is flat-out wrong.

In the 70’s and early 80’s the Oakland Raiders were the winningest franchise and the #1 merchandise seller. Home games were sellouts in the frenzied Coliseum where to team had a HUGE home field advantage.

Al got greedy and arrogant. He wanted to be Jerry Jones before there was Jerry Jones and build a 100k seat stadium. Problem was he couldn’t so he moved to LA into a 90k+ stadium. It blew up in his face. LA fans were fickle and they couldn’t even draw the 60k they did in Oakland.

In 95 Al came back with a couple thousand loyal LA fans but he had lost over half his Oakland fans. Now they are one of the lowest attended teams in the NFL.

Raider Nation? Those of us old enough to remember the early 80’s remember when almost every blue collar guy in the Bay Area was a fan. The Raider Nation of today is a shell of its old self. You have the LA experiment to thank for that.

Ochocinco claims that the Bengals are bringing in JaMarcus Russell

Posted by Mike Florio on May 11, 2010 3:37 PM ET
    OCNN strikes again.

Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco, who launched the Ocho Cinco News Network last year as part of a brilliant personal marketing campaign, has dropped a very strong hint regarding the next destination of former Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell.

Ochocinco says to Russell, “I’ll see you at minicamp” and then, “Oops, did I just leak that info?” (Which is dangerously close to, “Did I do that?” . . . which makes us think that Chad perhaps should be doing the Urkel on Dancing with the Stars.)

In response, ESPN’s Adam Schefter claims that the Bengals and others have called Russell, but that “there are no plans for him to be at any minicamps now.”

If the Bengals sign Russell, it fits with their M.O. of finding bargains. Though the Bengals have a franchise quarterback in Carson Palmer, some think that an elbow injury that plagued him in 2008 was still bothering him in 2009.

  201. 24 Says:

You have to wonder how Jamarcus would do with Ochocinco and Antonio Bryant as his WR’s along with Cedric Benson as his RB if he had to come in for Palmer.

  202. Nnamdi21 Says:

    201. Nice 24. Thanks.

I tend to believe Schefter this time (Even a garbage can gets a steak now and again) the Benglas have become a harbour for the Leagues criminal element and I’d think likely a possible landing spot for Jamarcass but not sure if its a done deal especially since OCho tweeted basically the same thing about T.O.

  203. Coach on Wheels Says:

Ocho’s 31 goal is no get attention. First TO now JR.

  204. 24 Says:

Speaking of T.O. Could we just sign him already? We desperately need someone reliable at the WR position. Its possible that Campbell could make these guys look better than our other QB’s have but still. Is anybody comfortable? The team has tried to fill this need through the draft and I applaud them for that but theres not enough experience and production here.

    DHB – 1st Round
    Murphy – 4th Round
    Schilens – 7th Round
    JLH – 3rd Round
    Ford – 4th Round
    Nick Miller

    Bodiford
    Figurs
    Holland – 7th Round
    Hubbard
    Watkins

  205. 24 Says:

Not that JR is worth anything but J.T. O’Sullivan is the backup QB in Cincy. I’d rather sign JR to the minimum and let him sit behind Palmer and possibly learn something that have Sullivan. You’d hope that JR could do more with his ability and the talent on the Bengals in that scenario. At least Bryant and Ocho can chase down balls unlike any Raiders WR’s with the exception of Schilens and Zach Miller.

  206. 24 Says:

If we signed T.O., we should keep these guys in order of starting.

    1 – T.O.
    2 – Schilens
    3 – Murphy
    4 – DHB
    5 – JLH
6 – Ford (Ford could very well replace JLH as the 5th WR if we go with 5 and he would also take over kick/punt return duties. Nick Miller could possibly stay but he becomes expendable if Ford has any success. JLH is not a terrible receiver but terribly hot and cold.)

    Without T.O.

    1 – Schilens
    2 – Murphy
    3 – DHB
    4 – JLH
    5 – Ford
    6 – Nick Miller

If Schilens gets injured again which is almost a guarentee, we’re screwed once again.

When I drive back from Oakland there’s hoards of faithful Raider fans taking the trek back to LA or Fresno or other stops along the way. We spend our hard earned dollars to make it up to Oakland even during hard times to have grumpy individuals like yourself bash us faithful followers. I recall big crowds in LA even though we weren’t perrenial playoff contenders. And now your blaming the fact that Al moved the Raiders to LA for the lack of big crowds in Oakland? Then don’t attend anymore either. The Raiders aren’t Oaklands team it’s Al’s team and he’ll move the Raiders wherever the hell he pleases and I’ll still follow them and you can cry about it

  213. the_big_one_of_83 Says:

If we signed T.O., we should keep these guys in order of starting.

    1 – T.O.
    2 – Schilens
    3 – Murphy
    4 – DHB
    5 – JLH
6 – Ford (Ford could very well replace JLH as the 5th WR if we go with 5 and he would also take over kick/punt return duties. Nick Miller could possibly stay but he becomes expendable if Ford has any success. JLH is not a terrible receiver but terribly hot and cold.)

    Without T.O.

    1 – Schilens
    2 – Murphy
    3 – DHB
    4 – JLH
    5 – Ford
    6 – Nick Miller

If Schilens gets injured again which is almost a guarentee, we’re screwed once again.

if T.O comes schilens or JLH has to go and T.O dosnt have to be a num ! reciver but has to play alot

Inoneword – the word is WRONG

It’s not about being grumpy. It is reality.

Reality – The LA fans aren’t enough to offset the losses or there’d be sellouts. Period. Fact.

Pre LA = Sellouts 60k every game

Post LA = Blackouts 30-50k every game

It isn’t about your loyalty. The FACT is there aren’t enough of you to offset the lost fans.

I guess the Oakland fans aren’t as faithful as LA fans because when the Raiders left Oakland alot of fans jumped ship yet when the Raiders left LA back to Oakland the LA fans remained faithful

no the oakland fans were mad that we had to watch so much 49er football due to the move

  218. 24 Says:

The big one of 83 – Why would Schilens have to go? He is our best WR. His problem is that hes injury prone but without him, we’re even more worse off. JLH can easily be replaced by Jacoby Ford or Nick Miller if he can stay healthy. If you want a good WR core, you’d have to have Schilens AND T.O. on the field at the same time because T.O. and any other receiver would put majority attention on T.O. and we need to spread the ball. Murphy is the wild card because he could very well have a breakout year. DHB is a mystery at this point.

  221. 24 Says:

I don’t want T.O. because of the rebel persona. We don’t need that, we just need talent. What you’d hope for is that T.O. has been somewhat humbled by the fact that nobody has signed him and if the Raiders signed him, he might be more greatful than normal. His attitude wasn’t that bad last year. People say that his ability is diminishing and while that may be true, the Bills were terrible.

T.O. had 1,000 yards in 2008 with Dallas. He still put up 829 yards last year on an inept offense.

    Last year stats…

YEAR TEAM G REC YDS AVG LNG TD FD FUM LOST

The costumed or gang banging fans that followed the Raiders north were never a staple of the Oakland Coliseum prior to their departure in the early 80’s. And as for the “front runner” aspect of LA fan, I was at quite a few Golden State Warrior games this season, and I was just AMAZED at both the number of fans at the games, and their belief in their team as the games got close at the end. Third, LAs “fans” weren’t FOOTBALL fans. Weak-will gangsters, crackheads and losers who thought wearing Raider gear made them “real men”.

Fourth, the reputation of Raider fans as blue collar tough was replaced. Now they’re seen as ghetto thugs and ticket sales have suffered. Especially the corporate sales that help teams like SF sellout even in bad years.

Fifth, once other teams followed the LA Kings in selling black gear the truth of the size of “Raider Nation” was revealed. Now the 49ers, A’s, Giants, everybody sells black gear. Raider sales have took a nose dive.

You want players to improve as the year goes on. Ro McClain is a rookie and he will probably go out there and make some rookie mistakes. He also is not the “thumper” that most here expect. He is more of a “tackler”, which I prefer.
Russell did not improve as last year wore on. DHB did. JLH did not. Satele did. Mario Henderson did not.

    =====================

    Mario sorely missed Gallery.

I think Gallery helps him with assignments in the huddle and on the line.

I forget who played guard while Morris was at center but he did ok then too.

Plugging Satele back in and moving Morris to guard next to Henderson really hurt.

Morris just under powered for the position.

We have more depth this year but hope we don’t need it.

Still have hope for Henderson if not at LT then maybe right.

    QB Rating – 15th – 86.4

    Receiving – 14th
    Returning – 16th
    Kicking – Tied 19th

Some important statistics show that Campbell was a positive on a bad team. They were 27th in rushing. He was sacked 43 times (3rd highest of all teams) yet most of his stats range from the average to above average in statistics. Based on the stats, the biggest problem was the offensive line. Maybe the playcalling was failing this team as well but Campbell got the most out of what was given to him. His defense was ranked 10th but the Raiders were ranked 1st in Defense on the worst offense ever so teams might have chilled against them.

    Redskins Top ranked Position players:

RB Clinton Portis – Rank 44th
WR Santana Moss – Rank 29th

This is a pretty good analysis. Once Campbell lost Chris Samuels his Pro Bowl LT, Chris Cooley his Pro Bowl TE, and Clinton Portis, his Pro Bowl RB, he kind of folded it up. While not a good sign, there is only so much one person can do.

  320. 24 Says:

1 Game with 80+ QB Rating
    Rams
3 Games with 70+ QB Rating
    Bucs, Cowboys, Eagles

13 of the 16 games had a 70+ QB Rating. All but 4 of those games were good teams which made for 9 quality games in a 16 game season against tough competition.

    Worst QB Rating games
    Chiefs, Giants, Cowboys

2 of these games were in Week 15 and 16 against NFC East teams that were battling hard for playoff spots and it showed as the Redskins were crushed in these games. Despite that, they bounced back to play the Chargers hard in a 23-20 Loss with a 101.4 game in Week 17.

The Redskins lost by 42 total points against 9 teams with the Redskins losing by 4.6 per game. Again, thats 9 games that were lost in close games meaning that 9 of their 12 games were competitive with 3 being blowouts with all 3 being against good teams…the Falcons, Cowboys and Eagles.

Good news. 3 out of Campbell’s 5 100+ QB Rating games were against the AFC West.

    Broncos – 100.3
    Raiders – 106.6
    Chargers – 101.4
