Raiders should resist urge to trade for Merriman

By Steve Corkran
Friday, May 14th, 2010 at 10:48 am in Oakland Raiders.

The thought of San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman wearing a Raiders uniform would have seemed preposterous as recently as two years ago.

At the time, Merriman was fresh from a season in which he recorded 12 ½ sacks and in the prime of a career that seemed destined to culminate with his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. There was no way the Chargers would part with the league’s premier defensive player.

Now, 11 days shy of Merriman’s 26th birthday, the Chargers are trying to dump Merriman, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. The paper reported that the Chargers had three failed attempts at unloading Merriman last month.

The snag reportedly resulted from the Chargers insisting upon a first-round draft pick in exchange for the five-year veteran. The New Orleans Saints reportedly were one of the teams interested in acquiring Merriman.

Merriman still hasn’t signed the first- and third-round tender of $3.27 million that the Chargers offered him as a restricted free agent. The Union-Tribune said the Chargers still are working on moving Merriman.

This is where the Raiders come in. They haven’t had a game-changing player on defense since the days of free safety Rod Woodson, with apologies to cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha.

When Merriman was at his best, teams devised game plans that included ways to steer clear of Merriman and provided for maximum protection against his frequent incursions into the backfield. No more. Merriman is just another guy in the Chargers defense.

In years past, Raiders managing general partner Al Davis would find it hard to resist the urge to trade for a high-profile player such as Merriman, regardless if it was obvious to most that the player’s best days were behind him.

However, Davis has resisted such urges the past two years, with the notable exception of trading for defensive lineman Richard Seymour just before the 2009 season started. At least Seymour still bears a resemblance to the dominant player he was for eight seasons with the New England Patriots.

As for Merriman, he recorded only four sacks last season, including none in his team’s final seven games. This from a player who averaged more than 13 his first three seasons.

Merriman said in an interview on NFL Network that he wants to remain with the Chargers. He also said that his drop in production last season owed more to injuries than anything else.

“Yeah, I had a rough year,” Merriman said. “Yeah, I had a groin and a foot injury that really slowed me down a whole lot. I came back from something that was tough for many guys to do, and right now, I’m more concentrated on getting back on the field 100 percent and performing like I do.

“There’s nothing more important to me than going out there and providing the things that I’ve been doing for my team for five years now. That’s the most important thing going on in my life and how I can get back and play great football.”

The Raiders still have a need for players who can change the complexion of games. Merriman once was that kind of player. Davis would be wise to let the phone go to voicemail if Chargers general manager A.J. Smith calls.

There are 13 linebackers on the Raiders roster. It’s likely that none will ever reach the level of play that Merriman displayed his first three seasons. However, it’s also likely that rookie Rolando McClain and a few others will surpass the play of Merriman next season and beyond.

What can it hurt to sign him to a 1 year incentive laden contract? He will either make the team or he won’t.

  4. W B Says:

Merriman hasn’t been the same since he got caught with the juice. I believe it was a couple of games after his suspension they played in Jacksonville. I went for the express purpose of rooting against the Chargers. Merriman came into the backfield and Maurice Jones Drew BLEW HIM THE EFF UP!!! It was a thing of beauty. It might still be on YouTube. “Lights Out” had his lights put out.

And that’s my favorite Shawn Merriman memory.

  5. JaMarcus Boucher Says:

He is the type of player that has come to the Raiders in past history and excelled. I believe he would be worth a shot. Not at a 2nd round pick though. If the Price is Right, why the f not?

  6. inonewordraider Says:

They’d ask more from us than they’d ask from other teams since we play in their division and he hasn’t shown anything recently to garner much

I would trade next year’s 3 RD pick for him. He can be our RDE! Make it happen Al.

    Al,

Trade for Merriman, and sign J Henderson. That will make our Defense better than the Jets, Ravens, and Vikings IMO.

I believe Al and the coaches want to wait until camp and cutdowns to resolve DT/NT needs. Waufle has not seen these boys play for real, and especially needs to gauge Bryant. Our well-connected staff may also be eyeing a few players who might become available later.

Second…….Ice Cube’s documentary was a pitiful attempt to upstage “Rebels of Oakland” from HBO a few years ago. Cube is a punk for sure having Snoop Dogg pose as if he is a Raider. Remember Snoop on NFL network a few months ago saying he never liked the Raiders? Cube is a fake gangsta never put in work or shot a gun in his life. He went to TAFT High in the Valley. He is a b!tch!

I really feel bad for the LA faction now after seeing that. The few good Raider fans down there should be ashamed to have people like that represent the city. They glorified that gang banging BS that took lives of many! Kicking people’s ass in the stands and tailgates is not what being a Raider is about. Snoop is a damn liar saying NWA put Raiders on map. Al Davis put the Raiders on the map and had 3 superbowls before them jeri curl n*ggaz made an album.

Furthermore Bill Plaschke is a b!tch and better not ever come up to the Bay Area. Heartbeat of LA my ass!! Lakers are the heartbeat of LA and that isnt up for debate.

Steve Bartman said it best when he said after 83 title they lost their edge and became Hollywood which is not Raider at all. Hollywood isn’t underdog at all, its mainstream popularity. The Raiders aren’t pop culture WE ARE COUNTER CULTURE!

Al Davis did say LA can come knock on his door but look deeper into people. He still owns rights to area and that was just a business move. He will never go back to LA and going to LA was what ruined this franchise. Had they stayed up home the Raiders would have 6 SBs at least. They lost their identity. and those who say it doesnt matter can look no further than how the team hasn’t been tough since the Oakland bravado left the franchise. We still are struggling to get that back to this day.

Ice Cube is a liar as well….Al Davis wanted to move back before the LA riots. He is a self serving Hollywood punk who never was real. That’s why Cam whooped his fake ass!

Raiders will always belong to LA? He will pay for that comment when he comes to Oakland next time! You think I’m playing? Many people are lining up waiting for him. He will have to answer to the OG Raider people who were down with this team from day 1! You can never compare to someone who was down since it started.

Fukin punk is bandwagon as hell anyways. He was 11 going on 12 when he so called became a Raider fan after they won a title. Typical! Who was your team before O’shea?

As I said he will have to answer and it is gonna be ugly this year when he shows up. He better have his bodyguards in full force. People wanna get at him solid about this blatant disrespect.

I know there are some……just some not alot of people in SoCal that dig the Raiders and I’m down for that but this documentary was a joke on so many levels and many lies were involved.

We surely don’t need a dischargers castaway. Especially, at DE. I don’t see that position as a major problem. If Al is going to spend money, then spend it on a “CENTER,” which is a position of need, great need.

Jake Grove, who was less than average as a player, looks good in comparison with Satele & Morris. Satele & Morris are at the bottom of the junk pile and they bring down the rest of the line. When Barrett Robbins freaked out in Mexico and went on his drug binge, his loss at center changed the whole dynamics of our offence from run to no-run and we got our butts kicked by Gruden and company. I’m not saying that’s the reason we loss but it sure contributed.

PS: So where was Labron last nite, he surely wasn’t in Boston. The true MVP is Kobe. He’ll take over a game and will his way to victory. You Kobe & Lakers haters need not comment, just go suck on your fzck stick.

He’s still young, so I could see gambling a 3rd or 4th round pick in the hope that he’s able to return to near the form of those first few seasons, but the Chargers are dreaming with that current asking price.

Shut the F up Laker haters. Celtics are just a played too much injury away from ugliness. And as for Wilt, Shaq could not handle his athletic jockstrap. Wilt at the Univ of Kansas ran the 100-yard dash in 10.9 seconds, threw the shotput 56 feet, triple jumped more than 50 feet, and won the high jump in the Big Eight track and field championships three straight years. Also was a world class pro volleyball player after he was forced to retire by Jack Kent Cooke in the ABA. One of the greatest athletes of all time.

  168. exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

From Wiki: Last about the Big Dipper,
Even far beyond his playing days, Chamberlain was a very fit person. In his mid-forties, he was able to humble rookie Magic Johnson in practice, and even in the 1980s, he flirted with making a comeback in the NBA. In the 1980–81 NBA season, coach Larry Brown recalled that the 45-year-old Chamberlain had received an offer by the Cleveland Cavaliers. When Chamberlain was 50, the New Jersey Nets had the same idea, and Chamberlain declined again. Chamberlain however participated in several marathons instead.[ He would stay an epitome of physical fitness for years to come, until his health rapidly worsened in 1999.

At 45 beat up on Magic. WOW!

Yeah, the disChargers are really going to trade Merriman to a division rival. What a fukken waste of an article. Good thing I didn’t read it.

u still here whats the point in being a charger fan on a raider site
    ————————————–

i’m not a chargers fan… silver and black for life

  178. Raider O Says:

We did well in the past with players that other teams thought were done.
If the prce is right for Merriman (a 3rD RD pick), then I would trade for him, but I wouldn’t sign him to a multi year deal till after next season. He has to earn it.

  179. The Big Banana Says:

San Diego wanted a 1st rounder for Merriman? LMAO!

funny how old timers still think the guys in their day were better when athletes are and will continue to be much more conditioned and better coached from an earlier age. A great players a great player in any era and can’t really debate Wilt Shaq since I never saw Wilt but can’t imagine he would overpower Shaq as he overpowered the centers of his era

  183. memo Says:

SD is out of their minds thinking Merry-man is worth a 1st rounder.

Gosh I freaking hate the Chargers…and the DOnks, and the Cheaps, and every thing outta of Boston

  184. Raider O Says:

I know Dakota wants King James to sign with the Lakers, but that will never happen!
Keep King James in Ohio, and get him more talent. West & Shaq are not enough!

You’re right. But relying on facts to make up an opinion is far more desireable than just spouting b.s. Pasting to inform others who don’t take the time to read is no crime. Yes, I had the fortune to see Wilt play, and to be able to compare him to the players that have come since. He was a super athlete. Pasted facts to support my view.

  186. memo Says:

The only way the Lakers can get James (and they could, Its the Lakers) is if they let go of Bynum, Lamar, and maybe Artest. Still, a lineup of Kobe, Lebron & Pau and fill the rest with scrubs; it would just be unfair

so then if your argument is correct then Jim Thorpe would have ran all over modern NFL defenses right? Or DHB a great track would be an elite receiver? Or Ronald Curry former North Carolina b baller would run circles around defenses right?

  188. exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

inonewordraider, no disrespect is meant but it’s easy in this tech age to view film of other eras and determine greatness. Not just from my day. 193. exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

Jim Thorpe would not have made an NFL team nor would other early NFL players due to the fact like baseball, it was mostly a white pro game and equipment and rules have changed and so has skill level and player size. With the infusion of the great black players in the 60’s it’s easier to compare that era and onword. Like comparing integrated baseball.

  194. A.B. Paine II Says:

  201. inonewordraider Says:

Orland has a big man, outside shooting, plays D, and is the deepest team in the league 1 thru 12 but what they don’t have is a go to guy in the clutch which is why I prefer Hedo over Vince Carter although Magic are better now because they’ve added depth and Jameer is healthy. They may overcome this fact but I think Lakers and Celtics will meet in the finals

  202. JaMarcus Boucher Says:

Lakers and Suns have mismatches all the way around on both teams. This should be a good competitive series, probably and should go 7 games. Advantage Suns.

Richardson has been on fire all year bro, I think Artest will handle him, but he won’t stop him in his tracks. Richardson is too fast and too good of a shooter for Artest to complete shut down in a series. Amare will not struggle, he will tear up the inside, Gasol and Odom are way to slow, Amare will have his way.

  206. raideredoutL.A. Says:

going back on topic, merriman sux and so do the chargers and their fans, we’re loaded at linebacker, we still need a NT, IMO, and lets see what next week’s OTA’s bring. good weekend to all.

  207. JaMarcus Boucher Says:

I disagree man, I think Merriman would be worth a look, we are loaded at linebacker, but we are young and inexperienced. Wouldn’t hurt to take a one year flyer on him. Incentive laden contract. Worth the risk imo.

  211. raideredoutL.A. Says:

we need a NT not another LB, even if its a 1yr. flier.

  212. inonewordraider Says:

Al is a hall of famer for a reason, here’s to hoping he hits it big again in his gamble to allow four 3-4 DE types man the line in a 4-3 defense. They’re interchangeable which will allow you to exploit missmatches if for instance a particular guard can’t handle Seymour you keep lining Seymour up inside against that guard. Continually rotating our Dlineman inside and out will also keep Olineman on their heels as they’ll have a hard time figuring out how to block our Dlineman if they keep lining up against a differnt one. These type of Dlineman will also stay fresher because they are more athletic than your typical NT or UT’s and because of the depth and interchangeable parts. Hopefully having bigger, more physical Lb’s will also help overcome the absence of having a big NT in the middle without losing a step in the passing game. So hopefully Al our D is able to stop the run and shut down the pass and the league begins to copycat your idea because if not it could be another long season with no 1st round pick next year.

    good observation…

i’ve been saying the problem with the Raider run D is that we were not running a 4-3… we were running a 2-5

2 legit DTs, 2 tweener ends, and 3 lightweight linebackers with speed… two of whom could have tried out for safety…

now we’ll be running a 4-3 with DE types along the entire line and 3 heavyweight linebackers to back them up…

message to opponents… if your QB is not really really good… you’re not gonna do well against the Raiders… ’cause nobody’s gonna be running on this group…

Merriman’s best days are behind him. Without the juice, he’s not the same player he once was. I understand that the juice has a way of making athletes excel – no schit Dick Tracy. We now have better talent already on board. Getting Merriman would be going backwards. We’ve already mastered that trick and need to head the other direction. Adios Merroids. We’ll see you next year below our new O-line.

The fact is Oakland is a Trasheap of athletic players with no skill. Us charger fans know who runs the west, we prove it to you two times a year. Half of the players the raiders try and claim had better years somewhere else. When’s the last season the raiders have been in the top 15 in run d? U guys are soft, all talk no substance.
