Boschetti back for another try

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, May 17th, 2010 at 7:06 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Defensive tackle Ryan Boschetti, a defensive tackle thought to have a good chance of making the Raiders roster last season only to be a training camp casualty on the final cut, has signed a contract, according to Raiders.com

Boschetti earned positive reviews from coach Tom Cable when he signed in April of last year. Boschetti played at UCLA when Cable was the Bruins’ offensive coordinator and the coach spoke in glowing terms of Boschetti’s ability to defend the run and play with necessary energy on the defensive line.

Now Andre Johnson is a no-show at Tesans OTA’S….wants a new contract.

What do you guys think about players doing this?

My feeling is that, if you sign a contract in good faith you honor it and play FOR THE TEAM (which includes teammates). The team cannot re-structure (lower) for lack of production…so why should a player demand more money early because he had a better season than HE thought he would be when he signed???!!!

  • CJ Legend 34

I hate agreeing with ESPN but this would be one FA pick up I think we should sign to a 1 yr deal. I hate his attitude at times but he does come to play and we need a veteran WR in the worse way. He is not the TO of old but he can move the chains when he is in rythm. Our WRs get hurt way to much and are to inconsistant to count on this year.

    Wow, 4eva!

I never even considered that. So many guys have recently demanded new contracts and held out of training until they got them…..I just figured this was another.

Do you REALLY think Texans would let him go ???!!!

Common practice in the NFL today.

Teams cut players all the time before their contracts are up.

I disagree with this completely. Teams do not honor contracts if the player isn’t living up to it. The raiders just released russell. Are you saying that since the team signed him to the 6 year deal, they should have honored it and kept paying him?

Look at Chris Johnson on the Titans. He led the NFL in rushing last year and he is scheduled to make less than the 3rd team rb on that team. His only leverage is to hold out for a better deal because he’s earned it..

  • SinceFrankYouellField

    Good point, CJ.

Guess I was too focused on contracts not being built to account for both production and lack thereof. There are often fiscal “incentives” built in….but not penalties.

  • CJ Legend 34

As a matter of fact Stars seemed to hold out more in the late 80s and 90s.

Guess the whole JaMarcus thing still has my goat.

Makes me sick to think a dumb kid can take that kind of money…then just laugh at those who trusted in him enough to agree to pay it…with him having to do virtually nothing to earn the money. 5.6 million per win….over 100,000 per completion.

How can that not make Raiders fans sick?

The ought to be some accountability built in. Hopefully, this all gets fixed next year without a strike!

    ———————————-

Yeah, i really think the contract structure in the nfl needs some re-tooling.. Like sign players for a shorter time but give the team more options with franchise tags or option years. like sign a rookie to a 2 year deal, and then give the team an option to pick up another 2 or 3 years at an average of the top 5 players at that position. That way, the rookie comes in and works hard to develope the first 2 (or 3) years and then gets a payday for the final 2 years before he can hit free agency and get another pay day. that way the team hasn’t committed big money to an unproven player, and the player can still earn good money in year 3.

WR on the trading block patrick crayton

  • M Lonetree

It is understandable for players to seek to use their leverage for more cash when they produce as have Andre and CJ28 as they know two things full well; 1) NFL careers are truly not for long – especially in the case of RBs; 2) NFL owners are going to make money hand over fist regardless of what players are in da house because of the guaranteed TV revenues.

that said, CJ28 is underpaid by his professional standards but Andre Johnson already makes a king’s ransom for a few hours work on Sundays. Two wholly different scenarios in their hold-outs.

  • SinceFrankYouellField

    I like your plan, Sac!

I agree with your premise, but i don’t agree that football players only work for a few hours on sundays. Andre Johnson didn’t get to be where he is at today by only putting in a few hours work on sundays.. Thats why russell is where hes at..

Maybe not. Raiders don’t have an exhorbitant amount of money invested in only one WR’S. Only relatively large amount is DHB’S…..

    SacRaider,

what players do during their off-seasons are their own individual choices.
they are paid weekly game checks for their work on Sundays.
which actually amounts to only a few minutes of realtime work.
essentially, Andre Johnson could train 7 hours/day during the off-season or he could smoke weed and chow on glazed doughnuts all day.
whatever he chooses as long as he produces on Sundays.

But a lot of teams also build workout bonuses into contracts so that players will work out with the teams. I do know that they get game checks and i understand your argument. My argument is just that a football player works a lot more that just a few hours on sundays if he wants to be the best.

  • M Lonetree

    BoSJack,

did you catch that NewYorkDailyNews article about drugs in the NFL? I posted a link a couple of days ago.

A current NFLer, writing anonymously, related that only once in either May or June are players tested by the league for “street drugs”. The player wrote that the training staff will give ‘em a heads up when the time is coming.

Otherwise players are only tested by the league for PEDs.

They can smoke and snort and shoot all season long if they want to and the league doesn’t care.

  • the_big_one_of_83

  • http://www.blogcdn.com/www.fanhouse.com/media/2008/04/desmond-howard-425-sm.jpg Bo Schembechler Jackson

    Lonetree,

Are the penalties for weed the same as a PED? Looking back at the Ricky Williams saga, it appears so. Why would the NFL test them in the dog days of offseason? They want them cleaning up for camps?

  • M Lonetree

    BoSJack,

in Williams case it was because was caught in the inital test and then more testing was mandated.

the player writing the article said that everyone knows they just have to be clean that one time in May/June and that the players regard anyone who tests positive during that time is an “idiot”.
