UPDATED: OTAs, Kiffin-Cable and `30 for 30′
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, May 17th, 2010 at 8:27 am in Oakland Raiders.
Back at it this week, with Raiders’ OTA’s scheduled Tuesday through Thursday.
If form holds, the media window will be Wednesday (awaiting confirmation), with the Raiders opting for the NFL minimum of availability rather than build on a what has been a very good offseason in terms of positive vibes.
UPDATE: Indeed, media availability will be four of the next five Wednesdays _ May 19 and 26 followed by June 9 and 16.
A couple of items until then:
– Lane Kiffin’s interview with HBO’s “Real Sports” airs Tuesday. Haven’t seen an advance copy, but the Orange County Register reported Kiffin denied he was insubordinate and CNN-SI’s Peter King had a Kiffin quote regarding Al Davis and the coach’s defense about leaving Tennessee after a single season in his “Monday Morning Quarterback” column.
“How many Raiders coaches ended real great? It’s all Al Davis. He’s gonna run the whole thing. What’s going to happen is whatever he feels like that day,” Kiffin said.
Contrast that approach with how Tom Cable described working with Davis following the draft.
“When I first got this job, one of the things I asked him to do was teach me (the business side of it), free agency, putting a team together through the draft,” Cable said. “We’re connecting that way, and it’s a good thing. The field stuff, the coaching, that is easy for me. That’s what I’ve always done. But there’s another whole side of this that’s just as important. That’s where as an organization, we’re able to do it together.”
Cable may not ultimately succeed, and we’ll have a good indication it’s a lost cause the moment Sebastian Janikowski lines up for a 76-yard field goal attempt (not that he’d be insubordinate in any way). If the offense improves, and the Raiders still struggle in terms of wins and losses, Hue Jackson could be next man up.
But Cable is operating in a way that gives him something Kiffin didn’t want _ a chance. You either look to succeed and survive or look to get out. So far, both Cable and Kiffin got what they wanted.
– Is this supposed to be tongue-in-cheek and I’m too clueless to get it?
In Mike Lombardi’s weekly Sunday column he writes “According to sources I’ve talked to in the NFL, former Raiders first-round pick JaMarcus Russell apparently is running out of options. Cincinnati isn’t interested, and several teams are exploring the possibility of Russell playing another position. Russell needs to be more proactive to get back in the NFL, and if that means turning to the CFL, he must explore that option. Waiting for his phone to ring from an NFL team is not going to happen.”
Playing another position?
Putting aside the jokes about Russell playing nose tackle or on the offensive line, what other position could he possibly play and exactly how long are these teams spending on someone whose sole strength at present is a strong throwing arm at a position other than quarterback?
– Lots of angry reaction on Ice Cube’s “Straight Outta LA,” the ESPN “30 for 30” film on the rapper’s youth and the influence of the Los Angeles Raiders.
Growing up in the East Bay during the Raiders’ Oakland glory years, my own point of view was expressed much better in HBO’s “Rebels of Oakland,” the documentary about the championship seasons of the A’s and Raiders. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t interesting to see things from a different frame of reference.
Most striking _ the Los Angeles Raiders represented style over substance, attitude over production. The Oakland Raiders were true iconoclasts, quirky individualists who became a team every Sunday.
Davis was right in that he’ll ultimately be judged by history, and make no mistake _ if the Raiders actually turn things around, considering the change in media since they last won anything _ he’ll be a bigger story than he ever was while presiding over three Super Bowl champions and railing against the perceived injustices of the NFL.

I think the Raiders made the right move cutting Russel, but I would not be surprised if he went to another teeam and performed well. Russell was just a part of the problem, a dysfunctional franchise was dysfunctional before Russell go there. So for all of you Raider ahters who are tricking yourselves into thinking he was the only problem is fooling yourselves. If this team is successful it will be because they decided to focus on team need and ability.

kind of a mute point to discuss Kiffin and JaDavis.
At the end of the day, Al Davis brought both of those guys in on his own. No one was clamoring for either of those guys.
The good news is that Davis learned from his mistakes and swallowed some pride.
Hopefully they move on.
Kiffin, JaDavis and Al all had their responsibilities for the mess the Raiders are trying to dig themselves out from.
Thank goodness that Jason Campbell was available. Now we have a chance!
May 17th, 2010 at 9:19 am

Darrelle Revis is seeking an average annual salary that exceeds $20 million per year, according to Michael Lombardi of the National Football Post.
In other words, Revis wants to be one of the highest paid players in NFL history, quarterbacks included. The Raiders signed Nnamdi Asomugha to a record three-year, $45.3 million deal last offseason and Revis wants to blow that out of the water. As Lombardi says, “this will not be an easy contract to get done, especially anytime soon.” May. 16 – 8:56 am et

Cube’s NWA 30 for 30 documentary was enlightening, now ESPN just needs another 30 for 30 ABOUT THE RAIDERS and NOT the connection between the Raiders of LA and Ghangsta Rap. If anything Cube Raider merchandising belongs to LA, but that lone LA Super Bowl had too many Oakland transplants to claim the team as LA’s, a team that was primarily built in Oakland with the never ending sell out games that came to an end with the move to LA.
Davis may have wanted luxury boxes and a new stadium, but i bet he would have loved to keep all the sellouts he passed on for the promise of Hollywood.
May 17th, 2010 at 9:46 am
should we sign undrafted DT Desmond Bryant to a 7-year $50.5 million contract?
that would probably make him play better. it worked wonders for Tommy Kelly.

Redskins signed DE Vonnie Holliday, formerly of the Broncos.
Holliday is 34, but was one of the most productive per-snap 3-4 ends in the game last season, so he’s certainly worth a look as a rotational body. He also has experience in the 3-4 as a five-technique with the Dolphins and Broncos. The more interesting aspect of this addition is that it could be a sign the ‘Skins are still trying to trade Albert Haynesworth. SI’s Ross Tucker is hearing that talks between the Vikings and Redskins are still alive. May. 17 – 8:40 am et
Source: Adam Schefter on Twitter

Fat Albert is clearly unhappy w/ the Redskins. Let’s make a move for him and watch this D be dominant. Fat Albert will be happy in our 4-3.

me too. after the last mini-camp we signed 2 vets
RB Michael Bennett & OG Daniel Loper. depth (basically)
Loper will compete for a backup guard job with Barnes, Rodd, Parsons & Morris (who also has value at center)
Bennett will compete for 3rd RB with Rock Cartwright (who also has value on kick returns)
I think Henderson, Veldheer, Walker and Barnes/Pears will be the 4 tackles
Gallery, Campbell, Carlisle & Loper will be the 4 guards
Satele & Morris will be the 2 centers
..if we keep 10 guys for the O-Line

Pretty interesting/unusual background…..and COULD prove to be a big plug in the middle of the D…..heavy emphasis on COULD. If I shoot my mouth off he might get cut before the next OTA’s are over….but kinda fun to think of a 6-6 355lb monster plugging up the middle. Gotta take a double-team. And must be pretty mobile – having played both O and D in college. He apparently plays with a team-oriented mean streak that has college opponents’ fans hating him….esp. Texas…..

The real key to this year will be our running game. Will Michael Bush or Darren McFadden stup up and be the guy? Which one will take on the task? Can Bush last a full 16 games as the man? This is McFadden’s year to prove himself. Focus is and should be our running game, everything else will fall into place.
May 17th, 2010 at 10:29 am
10-12 guys on O-line a very good bet. Couple of Raiders’ greatest problems on O-line have been injuries and lack of depth.
May 17th, 2010 at 10:29 am
I too hope Heard works out for us. I think that bryant will work out for us. He has bulked up from what they r saying.. gained 20 lbs..hopefully the gameplanning and scheme can take us to another level against the run..u still gotta tackle and make plays regardless who the dt is. If u look at the stats henderson doesn’t fair as well as tommy kelly or dez bryant. Shonasty has a lot of promise as well. Everyone on the line has to produce not just who is on the opposite side of tommy kelly at the other dt position..but most importantly the offense needs to score and keep the d off the field period.
May 17th, 2010 at 10:32 am
Frank: I’d like to see what Heard can do with some coaching from Marshall & Waufle.
hopefully he’s another diamond in the rough like Kelly & Bryant. but this time a run clogger (unlike Kelly & Bryant)
I don’t want to get too excited just yet. Terdell Sands was huge and he couldn’t play NT.

All hope the answers to all your questions are, “Yes”. Over-focused on passing game last year in the effort to “polish a tourd” (AKA JaMarcus) to mitigate the embarrassment he had become for the franchise. As a result, did not prepare the O-line well enough for the running game and gave up on the run too soon in games.

IRVING, Texas (AP) Offensive lineman Corey Procter has been released by the Dallas Cowboys.
Procter started only 13 games in five seasons with the Cowboys. Eleven of those starts came at left guard in 2008 for injured Kyle Kosier.
The Cowboys originally signed Procter from the Detroit Lions practice squad in November 2005.

I was on this blog yelling for us to draft a NT from TN about 2 or 3 months before the draft …
Dan Williams (Vols – Knoxville)
we got an undrafted guy instead:
Kellen Heard (Tigers – Memphis)
I guess I should have been more specific :/
Thanks AL!!!

Gonna be fun, ROG, gonna be fun!
About the RB thing……
Problem we had in past was, IMO, #25.
We had Bush….not yet really in shape and taking himself out to the extent Cable got upset with him.
We had DMac – a wonderful one-cut runner….with no hole opened for the one cut!
Then we had #25 – a 0-cut runner. Lotsa guts and speed….but not quite enough power. Bush has both!
I don’t think DMac’s lower body will allow him to carry the whole load or even the greater portion of it over a season.
Bush and DMac need each other – just like Dmac NEEDED his alternate back in college.
Together….THEY CAN BE DYNAMITE!!!!!
(But it all depends on improved run-blocking by the O-line).

******************************************************
LOL such a fukin scum punk! Hope you USC lovers are excited to have a guy with zero character leading those kids. How can anyone believe him after he ditched those Tennessee kids after one season.
So what if Al runs the show….you’re job is to coach the team. If not for al you wouldn’t even have a name. What an ungrateful punk. See Gruden never bashing Al? Gruden knows who made him!

Couldnt agree more with ya brother!!! The combo of Dmac and Bush is what Al envisioned with Bo and Marcus in the late 80s….but Allen was such a diva his ego couldnt take it. Al knew his body was battered because we use to run him alot and the life of an NFL RB is short. Being the highest paid player Marcus showed what kind of a b!tch he was. When Al needed him most vs Buffalo in 90 AFC title game Marcus b!tched out!!!

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Donovan McNabb apologized to the fans of Philadelphia for not winning a Super Bowl title for them.
“I look back – the things that I set out that I wanted to accomplish and bring back to Philadelphia I wasn’t able to, and I apologize more than anything to the people of Philadelphia, not bringing that Super Bowl to them,” McNabb told Philadelphia radio station 97.5 The Fanatic.
McNabb was traded to division rival Washington last month after 11 seasons with the Eagles, who drafted him third overall in 1999.
He led the Eagles to five appearances in the NFC championship game and a spot in the Super Bowl after the 2004 season. The Eagles lost that game 24-21 to New England.

NEW YORK (AP) A woman has come forward as a defense witness in the sexual assault case against Lawrence Taylor, saying the 16-year-old girl who accused the NFL legend of rape never had sex with him, according to a statement from the woman confirmed Friday by Taylor’s attorney.
The 23-year-old woman said in a sworn statement that she accompanied an alleged pimp and the 16-year-old girl to a hotel outside New York City where Taylor was staying. She said the teenager returned to the car with $300 in cash and said: “It was weird … we didn’t even have sex.”
“He’s innocent. She’s lying. She wasn’t raped,” she said in the statement.

One of the big criticisms of Terrance Cody was he was off the field a lot! I think one of the ESPN analysts did a comparison last year and found he only played 120 out of 280 plays during one four game stretch. That ain’t good. We want HIGH MOTOR guys here! Don’t we?
May 17th, 2010 at 11:58 am
every year there are 1 or 2 “can’t miss” DT’s in the draft and at least 50 percent of those guys bust out …
I predict McCoy will be a player. Suh will not (for the Lions anyway)
maybe after his contract is up he’ll join a good team as 3-4 DE or he’ll be a 4-3 UT with an awesome NT next to and have a chance to succeed

One of the big criticisms of Terrance Cody was he was off the field a lot! I think one of the ESPN analysts did a comparison last year and found he only played 120 out of 280 plays during one four game stretch. That ain’t good. We want HIGH MOTOR guys here! Don’t we?

==========================================
I think Suh is going to be one tremendous Dlineman for many years to come. Suh is a three down player who can play both the run and pass, plays with a high motor and he loves the game. He is not just a run defending DT. I love Suh. I would be VERY surprised if he didn’t have an EXCELLENT career. Of course I wanted Sedrick Ellis not Dmac too. Sedrick Ellis has played VERY well for NO, and has a World Championship ring. Dmac coughs it up every twenty touches. But what do I know?
May 17th, 2010 at 12:04 pm
Anyhow, Jerry, I don’t know how you came to the conclusion that one blogger represents all of the fans, but the Raiders’ success, style of play, or attitude did not change in LA. It changed when Al started drafting the players as opposed to Ron Wolf. Even in the documentary they talk about how for so many years the Raiders were able to replace good football players with other good football players, and it was amazing how they were able to do that. Kind of like how Green Bay was able to do it in the ’90s…don’t ya think? Has nothing to do with LA or Oakland, or anywhere the Raiders played. The Raiders had great fans in the ’70s. The east bay was truly a blue collar place then, lots of good union jobs, and the Raiders were their team. The east bay is no longer blue collar. It’s a two class system now, rich and poor. And most Raider fans can’t even afford to go to games. Basically, you’re getting the same thing in Oakland today with Raider attendance as you’d get if they were still in Los Angeles. Spoiled rich kids whose daddy pays for their tickets (Norco), and poor people using plastic they got from sub prime predators to pay for their tix (bri an aka return of drunkeness). Anyhow, that’s all neither here nor there. On the field, it’s all about who builds the teams. And when Ron Wolf was building them, the Raiders played hard nosed football. Since Al Davis started building them, they’ve been playing hard nosed flag football. lol.
May 17th, 2010 at 12:04 pm
I am not sure what our record will look like this year but I like the logic going into the draft and free agency. They are not rushing in to grab what ever name is out there and they have more privalaged information to why I guy is still on the market (TO for example)and not picked up by another team.
You know we don’t look like the desperate girl trying to get a date to the prom. Not to say we still are not desperate for some W’s but we are playing it real coool! ; )

Johnson skipped the team’s first voluntary practice of the offseason Monday and no one is sure when he’ll join the team.
General manager Rick Smith says he isn’t “real worried” about Johnson’s status. Johnson has five years left on an eight-year contract worth $60 million that included a $15 million in guarantees. The Texans restructured his first contract with two years remaining.
Johnson, who is entering his eighth season, has had more than 1,500 yards receiving in each of the last two years for the Texans.

I’m a Jason Campbell fan. I think he and Hue Jackson breathe new life into this inept offense. plus 2 or 3 new starters on the O-Line and another year of maturity for the young WR’s
Titans have a weak secondary. bring it!

May 17th, 2010 at 1:02 pm
I really like JC’s short and intermediate passing ability. His deep ball can sure use a little more work but it surely is better than anyone we have had since Collins. Seeing some games from last year I imagine a healthy Zach Miller gets a good shot at a pro bowl bid. With the speed we have at the other skills positions the field will present many options for Hue to take advantage of defenses.

If you would have saw them together at Kincaid’s the day after we traded for him you can hear and feel the excitement from them both. JC is excited to work with the guys we have. All humans want to have the feeling of being appreciated and JC was appreciative of the support and glass raising I did for him. You can see the guy wants to win and he is very humble and down to earth as Chris Cooley said in a recent interview

LOOK Seymour…..we lack a run stuffer…its ridiculous to believe Tommy Kely or Des Bryant will do that job at 300 lbs. Why not get proven players at that position. I dont want all high character guys on my team….then they are too soft. I need one maybe two deranged crazed individuals on my defense. Fat Albert or Big John take your pick but we need one of these guys. We are one guy away from a championship defense. I dont care what anyone says…maybe we need a real RDE but Shaughnessy/Houston can be that. We are closer than you think. A real Run stuffing NT puts us there and teams will fear coming to Oakland again

The people who are content with tommy Kelly posing as a NT like 06 or smallish Desmond UDFA Bryant trying are lost….Seymour get out of the matrix and call morpheus and take the other pill. High motor guys with no talent mean what? John Henderson is a guy with actual talent and you wanna just dismiss that? I keep telling you he hast played NT since 2007 but yet you refuse to listen. The guy played a position he never played in the pros. I mean bruh you gotta lay off of the meth crack or coke(well gimme a line) cuz you are a smart guy but you are trippin my brother

Sorry but Jacksonville cant think he was that bad if they moved him to UT after Stroud left…..use your brain man….UT is the guy who doesnt do the dirty work and is apass rushing DT…also they did some 3-4 and he play DE which was stupid. ROG,
You are absolutely right to work these guys over. Anyone who goes in thinking Kelly and Bryant (290lbs) will keep McClain clean is drinking that Kool-Aid morning, noon and night.
People in here are DREAMING of an Internet rumor that an Undrafted Free Agent from Harvard who played spot duty last year gained 20lbs.
One player away from a no-compromise defense.
Haynesworth or henderson….someone in here to plug the middle please!

Yes Mario is the worst T by leaps and bounds according to the “stats”.
I know stats aren’t the be-all-end-all, but I am sure this guy didn’t create his study to show that Mario Henderson and Kevin Mawae are the worst starters at their positions.
That’s just how it ended up, and is probably more truth than fiction.

It takes Davis and Cable a little longer to understand the change that is needed. For example, they realized the disaster at base end by the end of training camp….hence the last minute trade for Seymour
We will also realize the gaping hole in the middle around the same time…and at that point a trade might be made for Haynesworth….who will be a holdout by that time.
Raiders are run by visual people. They have to see something work or fail a few times before acting on it.

And don’t think for a second that Haynesworth wouldn’t hold out here. He got his big pay-day, and one year later, he wants another one. Being he has played 16 games once his entire career (contract year, no suprise there) I think Washington got completely hoodwinked when they signed him.

Definitely applies to the O-Line. From Kwame Harris being signed despite his prior performance, to force feeding him all season…to Cornell Green being allowed to START year after year….all the way to not even taking an O-Lineman in the draft last year. Definitely applies….cable thinks he can turn any player into a good player and Al Davis would just as well not spend any money on the lines if he could get away with it and focus all his dollars on receivers and defensive backs.

Vegas Raider,
Haynesworth for Seymour would be an excellent pick.
We are about to pay Seymour a ton of money and make him a top 5 paid defensive player…..at 31yrs old…
plus, Seymour doesn’t want to play here…he wants to be closer to his home in South Carolina. Hence the reason why he hasn’t signed yet. Send him on and thank him for his services.
Haynesworth may have an attitude, so be it, we need some players too. I’ll feel a hell of a lot more comfortable with Haynesworth and his attitude, then Desmond Bryant and his 290 lbs of Harvard High Motor.
We are trying to win games here. Not build a “do-right” team for the kids!

May 17th, 2010 at 2:46 pm
SnB,
Seymour doesn’t want to play here but Haynesworth does? LOL….Albert is ten times the headache Seymour is.
How many playoff games has Haynesworth ever won? Zero. How many playoff games has he played in? One. How many years has he played 16 games? One (contract year). How many years has Haynesworth been a huge disappointment? More than a handful including last year.
Compare those to Seymour, and if we did make that trade, Washington would have to throw in a pick, at least a 2nd rounder. Especially when you conisder Seymour gets paid less and produces more.
May 17th, 2010 at 2:48 pm
SnB,
My belief on the NT situation is the same as yours for TO.
Let the young guys play and develop, and not bring in a horses-azz who will quit as soon as trouble looms and will take snaps from our youngsters.
May 17th, 2010 at 2:52 pm
i liked fat albert whenever he acts right… but when he starts poutting and acts like a lil dik wad– well start kicking ourselves.. “why didnt we just keep seymour” man we need to role with what we got right now…
May 17th, 2010 at 2:52 pm
Vegas Raider,
Seymour is 31 years old….
Haynesworth is 29 years old
We would have to give Seymour a brand new contract at 31 years old.
Haynesworth is already signed to his mega deal and most of the dollars already paid off by Washington.
Seymour probably has 1 to 2 decent years left and won’t be worth a top 5 salary.
Haynesworth may have 3 to 4 good years left and is a financial bargain.
Haynesworth wants to play in a 4-3…badly enough that he wants out….we play a 4-3 and have a HUUUUUUUUUGE need for a NT.
Seymour plays 3-4 and LaMarr Houston could be the young version of Seymour anyway.
Make the deal.
Since when are the Raiders afraid of taking on guys that are rough around the edges
May 17th, 2010 at 2:52 pm
Seymour doesn’t want to play here but Haynesworth does?
***
Fat Albert already got paid after being tagged.
Richard Seymour is about to. Seymour never said anything about a 3-4 or 4-3 defense. Just wants one last payday. said he’ll play for anybody but the Pats
Fat Albert (before hitting FA) said he’ll go to the highest bidder. That highest bidder was Washington. He’s no longer asking for money. He’s got that. He wants to play NT on a 4-3 defense. He’s not a 3-4 DE
how many other 3-4 DE’s do you see around the league that weigh 350+ and completely dominate?
Skins signed Holliday & Carriker to play 3-4 DE. plus they have holovers Jarmon & Daniels from last year
Jarmon 277. Holliday 285. Carriker 296. Daniels 305.
May 17th, 2010 at 2:55 pm
Vegas Raider,
At receiver we have viable options
At NT we have William Joseph and Desmond Bryant. Bryant weighs 290lbs and is a penetrator. I doubt he can beat his man 1-1 enough times to command a double team, nor do I think he’s big enough to be a load for an O-Lineman to move out of running lanes.
William Joseph is a fringe NFL player who is often cut and re-signed during the year by 1 team in the NFL.

Vegas Raider,
No one thought for a second that Javon Walker could play. deAngelo Hall was a bad fit for the defense we ran. JaDavis Russell wasn’t a malcontent, he was just lazy as all can be. Plus, as a draft pick, he never proved anything.
Haynesworth can play and play well. And on his worst night will be a better option than Desmond Bryant, who at 290 lbs will be playing out of position (a typical Raider trait). I have no problem bringing on attitudes that can play. Those are good risks to take.

You guys are so gullible with this “he just wants to play in a 3-4″ notion.
Haynesworth has been about one thing and one thing only his hole career, money. When asked about his love for football, his exact words were, “if the money is right”. His exact words!!!
Well guess what, this year, the money isn’t right. I think he blatantly signed his deal last year to set himself up for this, after one year, wanting a new deal or extension.
Like if the Redskins just announced tomorrow “we are scrapping any notions of going to a 3-4″, Haynesworth would just show up the next day with a smile ready to work.
LMAO!!!

Vegas Raider,
1st of all…every player, coach, owner, and citizen in a capitalist society is about the money. I am about money and so are you. Only people that are not are folks working in non-profit and the military.
Haynesworth is not holding out for more money. He is the highest paid defensive player in the NFL and he just signed his deal last year.
Acording to the AP, he does not want to play the 3-4. He said as much earlier in the year.

SnB,
It is about the money, he made something like $16 million last year, and is only set for around $6 million this year. Bump that back up to $16 and guarantee that 3-4 sounds pretty good to him.
IMO, from reading about this guy for years, the 3-4 is just a smoke-screen excuse for him to ask for more money. Could be wrong, but his past remarks and actions make this sound a little like crying wolf to me.
May 17th, 2010 at 3:12 pm
30 year,
The Raiders rarely outscheme anyone. I am skeptical when I hear about different looks, moving players around etc..etc..
That’s not the M.O of the Raiders and you all know it. Its a base 4-3 with a lot of man2man and minimal blitzing.
So, Desomnd Bryant (290 lbs UT) is going to have to take it to the LG and C on those running plays. Otherwise one of the lineman get free and mug McClain…if Bryant is not beating his man 1-1, then look for those gashing runs again
May 17th, 2010 at 3:14 pm
Vegas,
Haynesworth, or his agent, isn’t stupid. they have no leg to stand on to get more money after just signing a 100 million deal with 40m guaranteed.
Just last year. Highest paid defensive player.
Its not money that’s deterring this guy, its the scheme.

30 year,
Cancers or not…we still need players.
Desmond Bryant as the starter next to TK is not going to get the job done. We all know it deep in our collective souls.
Do you really see Desmond Bryant (290lbs) full-time inside beating his man enough times to command a double team?
Do you really see him in their full-time clogging running lanes and forcing the RB to go in a different direction?
I want to believe he’s going to be the man. I just can’t. Not a 290lbs UFA from Harvard who played spot duty.
And don’t kid yourself into thinking that Rolondo McClain will just shed all the blocks and be a missle into the gap. he needs freekn help! And the opponents are professionals too.
I would much rather spend money and time on receivers and defensive backs….but he truth is, if this defense is going to truly succeed, its going to need 11 starters. Not a few starters and a couple of “get me bys”
The opponent will continue to run the ball until the Raiders demonstrate they are going to stop it.
So what is your recommendation?
Also, Seymour is NOT coming inside. He’s the RDE…Houston is the LDE. Cable said it himself…so forget the idea that Seymour is manning the middle.
May 17th, 2010 at 3:38 pm
The whole Haynesworth talk is fairly moot because we aren’t dealing for him. No way no how.
Now John Henderson? That could be a match potentially, and as long as we didn’t overpay him, I would be cool with it.
Give him 2 years/9 million, with a few incentives.
But you know what, there were 3 teams worse than us stopping the run last year, and they haven’t jumped at Henderson yet either. If he was such a sure-fire solution to stopping the run, he would already have a nice new shiny contract.

That’s no strategy. Just can’t play mix-n-match with these guys. They are going to line-up at their primary position most of the time given down and distance.

30 year,
I hear you in giving people a chance. Maybe I am cynical…I know I stopped drinking the kool-aid with this franchise.
The Raiders have a nasty penchant for bringing in great talent but neglecting the talent around them to make them successfull.
For example, sign Randy Moss but have no Line or QB to throw him the ball.
Sign Robert Gallery and move him around every line position.
Sign Michael Huff and put him out deep in no-mans land forced to cover the entire field sideline to sideline
Sign JaDavis and give him no discipline, no stable coaching, no O-Line and No receivers (Although JaDavis was a tool and a lazy good for nothing)
Now we bring in McClain. And we are just going to plunk him down there with Tommy Kelly and Desmond Bryant in front of him.
Very risky

LOL, you included.
I tried to tell you DE was the weak spot and you pumped up Scott to justify wanting Raji.
Seymoure, Kelly, and Bryant will get the majority of the snaps at DT. It is what it is. Henderson, or no one else is going to come in a change that. The coaches have a different idea than you do about how to fix the run.
May 17th, 2010 at 4:12 pm
Shaugnessy and Bryant are two 2nd year players that are going to see a lot of time on the field based upon how they played last year.

Man someone please talk to Seymour…..21 million was his roster bonus!!!!! Dan Snyder contract!!!! Roster bonus not his base salary. He is only getting about 4-5 million this season for playing!!!! Come on man!!! Fuk playing for Shannahan he takes the fun out of the game and he is a such a hack and a loser. Haynesworth isnt a 3-4 NT or DE…he is a 4-3 NT plain and simple and he knows what he can do I dont blame him.
=============================================
Sorry but Jacksonville cant think he was that bad if they moved him to UT after Stroud left…..use your brain man….UT is the guy who doesnt do the dirty work and is apass rushing DT…also they did some 3-4 and he play DE which was stupid. The entire defense left after 2007 year. Remember their 12-4 year and how tough that defense was? Look at the defenses the years he was there they had excellent run Ds…..NEXT
==========================================================
C’mon TROG, Why on earth would Dan Snyder pay $21mm to watch Haynesworth go play for another team? He could have done that for FREE by NOT offering THAT BONUS! Snyder had two choices: pay Haynesworth $35mm to play half assed for ONE YEAR, or $40+mm for two years. He opted for the two year deal ONLY so he didn’t look completely STUPID! He tried to trade Haynesworth before the draft and got NO TAKERS. So, if he cut Haynesworth, paying him $30+mm for just one year, he would have looked SO stupid it would make Al Davis’ wheeeling and dealing look like Warren freaking Buffet.
As for Henderson, again, you bring in the team as a whole not him individually. The team as a whole has played up and down over the last four years. They have had good years, they had so so years. Their defense has played decent, their defense played kinda crappy. Henderson has been paid like a four time pro bowl player. Henderson has played like a 5th rounder. No team in the NFL is going to repeat that mistake again.
May 17th, 2010 at 4:14 pm
SNB
TK and Bryant may be the starters inside but Seymour will be spending more than just obvious passing downs inside. Much like last year he will lined up at a variety of spots to cause problems and will be lined up more frequently where there is a mismatch.
I keep seeing people talk about how he was franchised as a DE….thats because the a franchised DE makes more than a franchised DT. It was more about the Raiders wanting to make him as happy as possible having to go through something no player likes; playing without the security of a contract and signing bonus.
May 17th, 2010 at 4:14 pm
SnB,
I’m sure the plan isn’t to have McClain supported by only TK and Bryant throughout his career.
This is year 1 in the make-over. We got rid of Jamarcus, Javon, Cornell, Kirk, Fargas and Warren. We brought in a servicable QB to push the job. We drafted a boss MLB in round 1, an active 300 pounder for the D-line in round 2, and two O-lineman in rounds 3 and 4, and than brought in the fattest DT left after the draft.
What more do you want them to do in a year? Just panic for Henderson or Haynesworth? What if the plan is to draft a true NT in the first few rounds next year? Certainly that is better than a one or two year rental for a malcontent.
A little patience my friend.
May 17th, 2010 at 4:15 pm
Jhill,
I pushed three players that year:
1. BJ Raji
2. Tyson Jackson
3. Jarron Gilbert
Those were the three. In fact, my tag name had Jackson & Raji back before registration.
Yes, I was big on Raji for this team and he would have made a great pick for this team. Especially with the issues with Tommy Kelly and Gerard Warren.
Again, Richard Seymour is NOT a DT in our defense. He will come inside on passing downs…just like last year.
HEre is your lineup
LDE: Houston
UT: Kelly
NT: Bryant
RDE: Seymour
That’s it. Now, if Bryant rips it up in camp, then by all means….I HOPE THAT IS WHAT THE COACHES ARE COUNTING ON AND ARE CONFIDENT IN.
Otherwise, that lineup will be your front four.
May 17th, 2010 at 4:19 pm
Personally I look forward to year 2 of the Marshall Plan.
A total remake of the linebacking corps along with new blood plus sophomores and elders on the line.
May 17th, 2010 at 4:19 pm
How about just moving Seymour inside for most of the snaps and have Houston move over to Seymour’s DE position and leave Shaughnessy out there to be the other end.
That would make sense to me, as a fan speaking from a million miles away.
I am not feeling this D. Bryant at DT thing…not feeling it.
May 17th, 2010 at 4:20 pm
Is Seymour signed yet?
May 17th, 2010 at 4:24 pm
LDE: Houston
UT: Kelly
NT: Bryant
RDE: Seymour
——————————————————
The positive spin to this is there will be NO running to the edges which was the MAIN problem on those big runs we gave up last year.
The 3 BRAND NEW LBs to go with that will do a better job of holding their lanes and gaps.
Did I mention the impact a legitimate offense is going to have on our defense?
Yet you want to keep talking about a fat ass so called “NT” ????
Desmond Bryant was successful on the field as a DT last year. Scott was ONLY successful as a pass rush DE his rookie year. No comparison.

Haven’t been able to post much lately. It was a busy and hectic weekend at the BuckeyeRaider household. Saturday was opening day for my three girls teeball/softball leagues. After that we went back to my old hometown to participate in a Relay for life event. One of my best friend’s wife has been diagnosed with Colon Cancer. Spread to her lymph nodes. Doctors think they caught it early. She’s undergoing Chemo. We were able to raise about $1,500 for The American Cancer Society.
Then I check in here last night and Lynn from Snot posted RIP Ronnie James Dio. Saw in the paper this morning he died from stomach cancer. One of the great voices in Hard Rock & Roll. Two of my all time fave albums Black Sabbath’s “Heaven and Hell”, and Rainbow “Rising”. Saw him live several times. Lil Bastard looked like he only stood about 5′2″, but he could belt it out. What a loss.
I lost my own Father to cancer 5 years ago this August. I miss my Dad every day. I remember sitting here reading Jerry’s post when his Dad died, with a big lump in my throat. It hit close to home.
A cruel and insidious f’ing disease.

Whatever defense you run, 30 Year Raider, you are going to see a lot of Ryan Mathews in the endzone.

If you look closely, you would probably see a bunch of Raider spooge in your GF’s endzone.

Tyson Jackson had zero sacks, zero tackles for a loss, zero passes deflected and almost half as many tackles as Desmond Bryant.
At #3, I would say Jackson was way more disappointing than DHB.
^^^^^^^^
Oh definitely….I was on KC reaching for Jackson last year but the media didn’t want to jump all over KC’s ass like they did the Raiders last year for reaching for DHB.

As for Raji, he was injured this year. That limited his reps. Plus, he plays for a team stacked with D-Line talent. Number 1 run defense. I could see calling him out if he were on the..let’s say…29th run defense.
My concern is that right now our answer to DT is Desmond Bryant. I am not comfortable with that. In fact, the competition right now is Desmond Bryant, William Joseph and Kellen Heard.
I am just saying.
As for the scheme. The Raider defensive scheme is pretty much the standard fare. Base 4-3 man2man and not a lot of blitzing. Al Davis still runs the defense. They may throw some wrinkles out there…but this defense is built basically to drive pressure from the front 4.
I just have questions about how effective Desmond Bryant is going to be as our starter inside. Tommy Kelly for that matter too. Who has been unimpresssive.
The team will do what it likes and I am cheering for it to work.
Just not completely bought in to the lineup as presented…and have deep concerns for McClain’s effectiveness if the two guys in fron of him don’t raise the standard of play at that position.

Wonder what the Polish Pectoral Tear is thinking these days. 4th on the depth chart already. That’ll teach him to lift weights like a linebacker. Idiot.
Odds are that five of the starting 22 will suffer some sort of significant injury in the next seven months (DMc is a given and I don’t count him in the 22 anyway).
Depth.
Safety – check.
LB? McClain has to stay healthy or its curtains.
CB. Hope McFadden pans out.
DL – plenty of bodies to rotate.
QB – not much to begin with but better’n the past few years.
RB? – Bennett? Rock?
FB is still an unknown.
TE – looks fine.
WR – no one really knows what the Raiders have with all the drops, injuries and inexperience.
OL – “I just want to hit somebody”, Bruce Campbell

Charged Up,
Why spend time on a Raider blog antagonizing Raider fans?
Kind of juvenile don’t you think.
Why not spend the time on a Charger or NFL.Com or PFT site talking Charger ball.
You guys should be trying to squeeze through that closing window….not worrying about what Raider fans think…..

Lonetree,
DL – Plenty of bodies to rotate…..
That’s not a ringing endorsement. We need 4 starters and depth. Right now I see 1 bonnafide starter in Seymour, a rookie in Houston, the underachieving Tommy Kelly and his big bloated contract and the undersized and unproven Desmond Bryant.
Depth? Richardson and Shaughessy I can endorse…Heard, Joseph and Cooper raises more questions than answers.

Talk to you later. I have a hot date tonight. You should see this girl. She is smoking hot.

I have been handicaping these things pretty well of late (Bruce’s rise last year, Jamarcus being released, the drafting of McClain to name a few) so you are going to have to go with me on this one.
Bruce still has a shot to start week 1. This is not the “Bruce” fan in me, I want the best guy to start, and if it isn’t Bruce I will be the first to say it.
But Gradkowski has the most experience playing with his teammates and coaches as any other QB on the roster, has thrown TD’s to Miller, DHB, Chaz and a few to Murphy. He WILL get a start this preseason (probably game 2 or 3) and if he plays better he will be starting in Tennessee. Don’t think Campbell doesn’t have to throw a TD or two this preseason to keep his job.
Point and laugh all you want, that’s the way I size it up.
May 17th, 2010 at 5:06 pm
SnB,
I think the D-line make-up is fine. with plenty of bodies to rotate.
I wonder if there is a team in the league puts their “starters” out there for more than a handful plays in a row without rotating unless they get caught up in a hurry-up situation. the big fellas just get gassed too quickly (if only they were trained like out-rigger paddlers!)to be of any use after only a short while (fat blobs in the middle most of all).

I was all for trading for Fat Albert during the draft. But it seems obvious by now that is not the route Mr. Davis and Cable are going to go. They’ve been burned by too many veteran free agents. They are not going to bring these guys in, especially ones with questionable character or work ethic.
They are going with a youth movement. Bringing in young guys with high motor and character.
I think the DL will be fine. They have a lot of interchangeable parts. Seymour and the rook Houston will get some snaps inside. Groves, Scott, and perhaps even Wimbley will line up with their hand down at DE in some pass rushing ops.
They are going to rotate a lot of bodies in and out, keep em fresh and ATTACK in waves.
Plus, they signed the wide body Heard to give them some size inside. Let’s see how he looks in camp and preseason before we hit the panic button.

Lonetree,
Speaking of Kellen Heard (and LOCO engineers), I saw your post last night. ‘Bout Heard not wanting to play football, but instead engineer a train like his momma. Man, I hope that’s not the case. The window to play professional football is very small. Sieze the opporunity young man. Both Robert Smith and the TE from the Niners, Franks maybe?, went on to become surgeons after their playing days were over.
This guy has his whole life ahead of him to be like Momma and go play Casey Jones.
