No news is, well, still news

Yes, I’m spending most of this weekend watching a 13-and-under baseball tournament, but I’ve got a cell phone and a computer in case anything happens with the Raiders . . . which it hasn’t.

The business has evolved into one that is as preoccupied with projecting a sequence of events as repeating them.

With that in mind, here’s what’s going on with the Raiders until further notice:

– Jason Campbell is a huge upgrade from JaMarcus Russell, but things will get very interesting when Bruce Gradkowski takes the field in Napa. He built a lot of support after taking over for Russell, but it won’t take more than a few Campbell successes for teammates to surmise that anyone was going to be an improvement.

– The most important metatarsal in the NFL belongs to Chaz Schilens.

Sorry, but coach Tom Cable’s enthusiasm of the corps of wide receivers comes off as whistling in the graveyard without Schilens.

For a fourth-round draft pick, Louis Murphy was a revelation. But other than Schilens and Murphy, it’s a crapshoot. DHB and JLH? Unproven in capital letters. Jacoby Ford is at least a year away from racing under rainbows consistently. Todd Watkins, Jonathan Holland, Shaun Bodiford . . . . need I go on?

Cable can say all he wants they haven’t considered Terrell Owens, but if there is any real concern about Schilens or the longer term, some kind of incentive-laden one-year deal with Owens is worth considering.

– Hue Jackson is the man.

Argue amongst themselves how it transpired, but common sense says Al Davis told Cable the only way he was staying on is if he turned over the offense to someone else, and Jackson is that person.

Lot of buzz amongst the players regarding Jackson. He’s bringing back a good practice mentality in which he wants the offense to get after the defense, and will let the defense know about it when they’ve been had.

– The Raiders (and this is purely a Davis thing) don’t exclude the media for the sake of secrecy. They do it because they can.

As Monte Poole points out, it doesn’t make a lot of sense with regard to Jackson.

– Speaking to Poole’s point about fans seeing enough good things this offseason to return to the fold, a retired Oakland police officer I see occasionally told me he sent in his season ticket money the moment he heard about the release of Russell. I’m sure he’s not alone.

– Any talk of going to a predominantly 3-4 defense remains just that _ talk _ until further notice.

It’s possible the Raiders are going heavy on 3-4 on the days the media can’t watch organized team activities, and equally as possible they’re doing the same old stuff.

– Heavyweights ought to look elsewhere.

Other than undrafted free agent Kellen Heard, a 354-pound nose tackle, the Raiders have been (other than JaMarcus Russell) watching the scales closely the past few years. Terdell Sands was eventually sent packing because of it.

– Gradkowski has no intention of settling for being a backup quarterback.

Which is precisely what makes him an ideal backup quarterback.

– As time goes on, the most relevant and interesting drills, seven-on-seven’s and team sessions will be when Darren McFadden is sent into a pass pattern on the outside guarded by either Kamerion Wimbley or Trevor Scott, and how the Raiders’ defense responds. The far-too-early-returns show McFadden having his way.

– Teams will continue to inquire about running back Michael Bush, but there is no chance he’ll be traded because he’s still working for the salary of a fourth-round draft choice and Davis would insist on first-round compensation.

– Given the limitations of the offseason, the Raiders can speculate they’ve fundamentally improved (specifically with the pick of Rolando McClain) but have no hard evidence they can dominate the two areas which marked the great teams of the franchise’s distant pass _ blocking and tackling.

The Supreme Court disagreed in American Needle v. the NFL and ruled the owners can sometimes be sued if they conspire among themselves to restrict competition. “Each of the (32) teams is a substantial, independently owned, and independently managed business,” wrote Justice John Paul Stevens. “Decisions by NFL teams to license their separately owned trademarks collectively and to only one vendor are decisions that the deprive the marketplace of…actual or potential competition,” he said.

Hey BOY!! tell what predictions you’ve made that came true?

All you that want to call others rauds and what not, what are you positions on the Raiders that came to fruition.

Most o ypou spend large parts of your life in here rtalking crap that makes no sense at all. Yet have the unmitigated gall to attack someone else.

I had very high hopes or Russell that were not fulfilled, I expected him to eventually act like a pro, he never did. Maybe someday he will. All I can talk about is his skillset I can’t read his mind and motivation. It appears some in here if you don’t agree with their assesment, they have an issue with you.

I make my own assesment and stand by them I don’t run and change identities. So if you can’t deal with that…………tough.

I still think the kid is very talented he just needs to get his lie together and become a real pro. I he does he can be great………..there’s no question in my mind. But HE HAS TO WANT IT!!!…………..period

That’s true in any fanbase, have you seen the Oakland Coliseum lately? If they start winning the stadium will fill. That’s what a lot of fans are, they’re front runners when things go bad they disappear when it’s good, they pledge all kinds of allegiance.

Report: Dolphins were contacted about a Crayton trade

Posted by Michael David Smith on May 24, 2010 12:09 PM ET

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Patrick Crayton is probably going to end up getting cut before the start of the regular season. But before that, the Cowboys would like to at least explore the possibility of getting something for Crayton.

According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, the Dolphins have been explored as a potential destination for Crayton.

Per Jackson, the Dolphins were contacted about a Crayton trade. However, the contact apparently didn’t go beyond gauging the Dolphins’ interest.

It seems unlikely that the Dolphins would trade for Crayton, and for that matter, given the $2 million he’s slated to earn in 2010, it seems unlikely that the Cowboys would be able to trade him at all. Or to justify keeping him.

Kris Jenkins on Rex Ryan: “His body fat percentage says pudding”

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on May 22, 2010 10:22 PM ET

Jets defensive tackle Kris Jenkins’ interview with NFL Network’s Rich Eisen is technically four days old, but it’s new to me. (Plus it’s Saturday night, I ran a half marathon this morning, and I’m too tired to look for something new.)

The four-time Pro Bowler says his weight loss competition versus Damien Woody and Rex Ryan is unfair. After the group weighed in, Jenkins knew he had the most muscle in the group.

“I know with Rex, his body fat percentage said pudding,” Jenkins said. “I’m really with some guys right now, that are a lot of mush.”

Despite that, Jenkins says his experience losing weight will pay off, and he’ll drop 50 pounds and win the competition.

“I think I have the work ethic on this one,” Jenkins said.

But he theorizes that his job will be tougher because his chubby friends have more fat to lose.

“Damien Woody can tell you,” Jenkins said. “Half of his body composition is Maryland crabs.”

AFC West mailbag By Bill Williamson

    Weekend mail call:

Mike from Livermore, Calif., wants to know if I was running the Raiders would I trade Richard Seymour for Albert Haynesworth of Washington.

Bill Williamson: It’s a very interesting question, Mike. Both are fine players. Haynesworth may end up being available because he is not comfortable with Washington moving from a 4-3 to a 3-4 defense. Seymour, acquired from New England last September for a first-round pick next year, will be a free agent after 2010. Seymour is a natural fit for the 3-4 defense. Oakland is trying to give him a long-term deal. Seymour will turn 31 during the season and Haynesworth will turn 29 next month. Haynesworth can certainly help Oakland. He’d help turn around the Raiders’ run defense along with rookies Rolando McClain and Lamarr Houston. But Seymour is a key for Oakland. The Raiders really value him. In the end, I’m not sure Oakland would bother to explore this trade because it likes Seymour. I can’t blame the Raiders. Haynesworth is a fine player, but so is Seymour. I’d stick with him.

    Raider O

The Pat’s didn’t have great WR’s but they were established ours are largely unknowns. That does not mean they WONT produce, it means we don’t know if they will or wont. That at least is of serious concern. The only guy I feel confident in is Murphy. In order to run consistently you at least need the threat of the pass.

I o think we have the threat an maybe even a real threat if DHB can deliver to some degree. His speed is a real threat if he can make some plays it changes the dynamics of the entire offense. You cannot defend that kind of speed and effectively stop the run. The key is not so much a great passing game but an explosive one. That’s how the Pat’s did it.

    LMAO!:

Bowe’s story has Chiefs in lockdown
    ESPN.com news services

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City Chiefs receiver Dwayne Bowe caused an off-the-field distraction by describing how his teammates arranged to have women meet them at a hotel during his rookie season.
Now, everyone is in lockdown mode.

The Chiefs were mum on Bowe’s lurid story on Monday, with coach Todd Haley calling it an “internal matter” and players throughout the locker room repeating “no comment” at every turn.

Bowe caused a stir last week when he told ESPN the Magazine about a 2007 road trip to San Diego when teammates “imported” women they found on social networking sites.

“You hear stories about groupies hanging out in hotel lobbies, but some of my teammates had it set up so there was a girl in every room. The older guys get on MySpace and Facebook a week before we go to a city; when a pretty one writes back, they arrange to fly her in three or four days in advance,” Bowe told ESPN the Magazine.

“They call it importing. Younger guys don’t have the money to do it. Anyway, these girls had the whole top floor. They know everything about us — first and last names, sisters and brothers, salary. This one girl was talking to me like she’d known me for years. ‘Hey, D-Bowe, how’s Grandma?’ I’m like, ‘How do you know my grandma?’ She knew that I talk about her every time I’m interviewed for a story. I told her I had a girlfriend, but she didn’t care. She was wearing my jersey, sitting in my lap, making it look like we knew each other. Then she took a picture and put it on Facebook. That almost got me in trouble,” he told ESPN the Magazine.

Bowe’s career has been plagued by dropped passes and last year he was suspended four games for violating the NFL’s drug policy.

The non-profit Friends of Oakland Parks and Recreation organization will receive a $200,000 NFL Grassroots Program grant, facilitated by the Raiders. It will be used to install a synthetic turf field and drainage system at Sobrante Park, a multi-purpose field located in East Oakland, designed to serve more than 14,000 young people in the area.

“The kindness of the Raiders to recognize an area that sorely needs their support will, in no small amount, have a tremendous impact on the lives of these kids,” President Pro Tem of the Oakland City Council Larry Reid said.

Matching funds will be provided by the City of Oakland and Oakland Unified School District.
