Raiders sign Porter (not Jerry)

The National Football Post is reporting the Raiders have signed cornerback Joe Porter, citing a league source.
An undrafted free agent out of Rutgers in 2007, Porter spent time on the practice squad of the Green Bay Packers in 2007, during which time the secondary coach was Lionel Washington.
He spent last season with the Las Vegas Locomotives of the UFL.
He apparently has “Raider speed,” winning the indoor and outdoor 200 meter championship in the Big East.
Following the UFL season, Porter spent the last month of the NFL season on the practice squad of the Cleveland Browns but was not signed to a “futures” contract.
The Raiders have announced no transactions on their Web site since signing defensive tackle Ryan Boschetti on May 17.

I think they have all the games on NFL.com if you buy them. Direct TV pretty much rapes you for NFL ticket but cheaper than flying to every game.
CB depth is still a concern so is FB imo.

There was an absolute DEARTH of cornerback talent in the last draft. Davis made that tender to protect his team, in the fact that if one of his corners went down, it would be a HUGE disaster. The NFL is now a passing league. You HAVE to have three to four VERY good corners. We have two. Not counting Routt, who is not a very good corner.

CJ is a better nickel candidate, while Routt does better on the sideline routes. CJ is excellent and jumping on slants and crossing patterns. Routt gets too many PI flags though.

Tyvon Branch had the most tackles of any defensive back in the entire NFL last year (his first year starting) = 124 tackles
1 sack. 2 forced fumbles
0 passes defensed. 0 INT’s
is this a good thing (yay. awesome job TB!) or a bad thing (shouldn’t our safeties be focused more on coverage?)
the Packers had the #1 run defense last year and thier top tackling safety was Pro Bowler Nick Collins with 53 tackles. why ??? because thier front seven gets it done

Stanford Routt is a VERY SELFISH player. You will hear coaches talk about athletes being selfish and Routt is a prime example. Let me give you a couple of instances: Routt is highly penalized and sometimes he takes penalties when he shouldn’t. Then there was the game in San Diego last year where Routt was lined up over the slot receiver and decided on his own to come on a blitz. Rivers hit Routts uncovered man in the endzone and the Raider defense was looking around at each other going, what just happened? Routt is out there free lancing. Cut his ass.

Great analysis. I’m not sure the tender needed to be as high as it was, but (including free agency) there just wasn’t much to choose from to replace Routt. He’s familiar with the scheme and the other DBs as well, and that’s no small thing come gametime. Maybe one of the rooks will step up because we could use some more depth, but we’re in better shape than a good number of teams at that position. Wait until Denver’s pint-sized group has to defend all those big WRs in the West.
Just because we’re not the Jets doesn’t mean it’s a disaster at corner in RaiderLand.

There was an absolute DEARTH of cornerback talent in the last draft. Davis made that tender to protect his team, in the fact that if one of his corners went down, it would be a HUGE disaster. The NFL is now a passing league. You HAVE to have three to four VERY good corners. We have two. Not counting Routt, who is not a very good corner.

Great analysis. I’m not sure the tender needed to be as high as it was, but (including free agency) there just wasn’t much to choose from to replace Routt. He’s familiar with the scheme and the other DBs as well, and that’s no small thing come gametime. Maybe one of the rooks will step up because we could use some more depth, but we’re in better shape than a good number of teams at that position. Wait until Denver’s pint-sized group has to defend all those big WRs in the West.
Just because we’re not the Jets doesn’t mean it’s a disaster at corner in RaiderLand.

I agree that Routt hasn’t been starting material, but I still maintain there isn’t a whole lot we could have done about it this offseason (so far, anyway).
I too would like to see one or more of the rookies show something. McFadden looks like he definitely has some skills and could contribute in the slot, and I really like Ware’s agressiveness.
Not easy to be a corner for the Raiders. Ask DeAngelo Hall.

Speaking of secondaries, I’m really hoping that DHB can get a payoff on all the hard work he’s done this offseason. Denver’s secondary, aside from Champ Bailey, is small, and San Diego’s is slow, especially at safety. Our WRs are bigger and faster than the guys in our division that will be tasked with covering them, and this year it looks like we will have a quarterback that can actually get the ball to them.
Get those big, fast young Raiders the ball in the open and we could have some fun this year.

he’s garbage as a starter. his stats are due to the simple fact that nobody throws at naamdi.
tackles as a corner are not what you want, considering hes not any help in run suppoprt. all it means is hes making the tackle after somebody catches it on him.
however if we get a strong pass rush this yr, which is realistic, him and routt should be fine for the time being.
but i’d say next yr a definite need in the draft.

The depth and competition at CB/DB is just fine IMO.
I would still sign Hendu to a bargain basement 2 year deal to bring in a rotational situational DT. He would add much needed depth and leadership to that DT spot.
Same goes for a pros pro like L Coles to add depth and leadership to the WR spot.
TO is BO and is old, slow and if things get bad he would cause the team to implode IMO.

PHOENIX (AP) The Suns held a team meeting on Sunday, then spoke of the joys of the season and the hopes that it was only the beginning. Whether that future includes Amare Stoudemire is the big uncertainty.
Stoudemire said only that he would begin his evaluation process on Monday. Team owner Robert Sarver and general manager Steve Kerr wouldn’t address the issue. Suns coach Alvin Gentry said “you would expect” Stoudemire to opt out of his contract and test the free agent market.
“If you’re asking me, ‘Do we want him back?’ Yeah, we want him back,” Gentry said.
Stoudemire, who has spent all eight seasons with the Suns after coming to the NBA directly from high school, is due to make $17 million in the final year of his contract. He can opt out, and he wants a maximum deal.
“This year’s been amazing for us,” he said. “We’ve done a lot, we’ve grown a lot. We’ve improved so much within one year. It’s definitely been one of the most exciting seasons I’ve ever had. We definitely want to continue that, so if that’s possible that would be great.”
Sarver said he wants the emotion of the playoffs to subside before he, Kerr and the rest of the front office begin to address the Stoudemire issue and others facing the team.
“The only thing I know is this was obviously his last game for this season,” Sarver said. “I don’t really have any thoughts beyond that right now.”

No-help All Stars
Raiders defensive lineman Richard Seymour still hasn’t signed yet (and why would he before training camp?) but he got some love yesterday from the guys at Football Outsiders. He is on the No-help All-Stars, as one of the team leaders in hurries in the NFL who got the least amount of help from a teammate up front.
Seymour had 17 hurries, with Gerard Warren second on Oakland with 11. Warrren, who missed a lot of tackles last season, was released in March and signed with the Patriots.
The Colts’ Dwight Freeney led the NFL with 34 hurries, while the Vikings’ Ray Edwards came in second with 33. I almost typed in ‘underrated’ for Edwards, but with Jared Allen, Kevin Williams and Pat Williams getting all the attention in the trenches, I almost picture Edwards skipping into the backfield on occasions.
The Niners’ Justin Smith had a nice season last year and came in fifth with 28.5. The Chiefs’ Tamba Hali had the highest percentage of his team’s hurries, with 33 percent (or 26 of 80).
As for Seymour, he is likely to sign the exclusive franchise tender — which will pay him just under $12.4 million this season — and be in camp on time. He is not sweating missing any summer practices.

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) Minnesota head coach Brad Childress said Wednesday he is not concerned with the trash-talking Twitter tussle going on between Vikings tight end Visanthe Shiancoe and Saints safety Darren Sharper.
Shiancoe and Sharper have been sniping back and forth with tweets for the better part of two weeks, a feud that started when Sharper implied New Orleans would go after Brett Favre’s surgically repaired ankle in the season opener in September.
The latest exchange happened when some Vikings visited the Minnesota National Guard on Tuesday. Shiancoe posted a photo of a target used for shooting practice. The target had a picture of Osama Bin Laden saying, “I’m Darren Sharper,” with Sharper’s No. 42 on his chest.
“Before target practice a soldier suggested a custom target for me,” Shiancoe tweeted before posting the picture. “Guess he wanted to start my engine early for the SAINTS game!”
Childress was on the same visit with Shiancoe and said he saw him taking the photos of the target and “knew exactly what was going on.” But the coach didn’t seem too worried about the cyberspace jawing, saying that “there will be somewhere we will reel it in.”
Shiancoe was one of several Vikings veterans who was not at Minnesota’s optional practice Wednesday.
Sharper and Shiancoe grew to be friends when they played together in Minnesota. Sharper left before last season to join the Saints, who beat the Vikings in overtime of the NFC title game en route to winning their first Super Bowl. The Vikings and Saints kickoff the regular season on Sept. 9 in New Orleans.
The smack talk has been playful throughout, though Sharper appeared to take exception to the photo of the target.

We should have kept Morrison, drafted or traded for a real NT and selected Anthony Davis in round 1. Instead we replace Morrison, a guy that had trouble shedding blocks and didn’t make many big plays with a MLB that Charlie Casserly claims has trouble shedding blocks and doesn’t make many big plays….and we still don’t have the decent NT or a decent RT.

Davis & Cody in the first 2 rounds would have been SOLID.
I’m fine with Houston & McClain as long as we get a starter quality nose tackle on the roster sometime before Preseason. O-Line is still shaky at best, especially if Veldheer & Campbell can’t beat out Henderson & Carlisle for starting jobs.

Here’s a Kellen Heard update:
The Oakland Raiders defensive tackle issues appear to be solved following standout performances from Kellen Heard and Desmond Bryant during last week’s OTA practices at team headquarters in Alameda.
On one supposedly non-contact play, Heard used his right arm to drive Robert Gallery into the backfield while intercepting the shotgun snap with his free left arm. Quarterback Jason Campbell deftly stepped out of the way on a play that would surely been a defensive touchdown during the season.
Teammate Desmond Bryant had the other two interior linemen occupied, leading coach Hue Jackson to berate center Samson Satele in Polynesian dialect.

Don’t get me wrong, I think Bush should be the starter, but let’s not froget that Bush got the majority of his yards on long runs in a few games. He’s still unproven. Plus he got to run when we finally had somewhat of a passing game w/ Grads. We absolutely had no chance to run w/ everyone loading up in the box, because of Jacraptable unable to make a simple pass and completion.
Bottom line is that both our RB’s should be better under our new and improved passing offense.

Downplaying Ron Wolf’s impact here with quotes is not going to change the fact that he was was here pretty much throughout the entire run of Raiders’ success in the late 60’s to early ’80s, and then was GM at Green Bay when they won a Super Bowl. Al Davis couldn’t get the Raiders off of the ground in the 1990s while Ron Wolf put Green Bay into the elite of this league. Those facts stand out just as far, if not further, than the lip service that you source to make your case the Wolf was nothing more than a Davis flunky. Little trivia for you, Bob. One of these two people has gone 7 years straight losing 11 or more games as a top personnel guy in their organization, Ron Wolf or Al Davis. Which was it?

#1 Morrison was here for 5 seasons (4 as MLB) with crap for DT’s
#2 vets change teams fairly often. even if Capt Kirk gets the job done in JAX, he may not be there 5-7 years (see Henderson, Stroud, MLB Mike Peterson, Donovan Darius, etc) it all depends on the young up & comers and price tags
if McClain has guys like Kelly, Warren, Sands and a 36 year old Ted Washington at DT I expect the same results …
Napolean Harris was a 1st round MLB who only spent 3 years in Oakland before getting traded. We haven’t seen McClain play yet, but he’s already been questioned in pass coverage. doesn’t have “Raider speed”

If memory serves, McFadden started the year behind an o-line lacking Robert Gallery, and Russell was the QB, and DHB was being run out there and we didn’t even have Chaz. McFadden did not get the benefit of running behind our best o-linemen and with a QB and WRs that provided at least a decent passing game.
Of course you will ignore those facts.
But the important thing to know is that Bush and McFadden will both be great now that the Cable guy has been cut out of the offense. With Cable in charge his butt buddy Fargas got 13.35 carries per game while Bush only got 7 carries per game and McFadden only got 8.7 carries per game. Hue Jackson is going to make sure Bush and McFadden are properly utilized in 2010 baby!

I hope the dis Chargers keep doing what they’ve done in recent years (aside from LT) and pay guys like McNeil and Merriman big bucks.
McNeil’s injury prone and Merriman’s on the down hill side with one knee.
Pay them huge long terms like you did for Shaun Phillips, Stephen Cooper, Nick Hardwick, Anotnio Cromartie and Luis Castillo.
NOT that Oakland has the best signings on earth thats for sure, but SD’s made some errors that are coming home to roost…

If you were to divide the NFL by eras, you’d have to say the Raiders haven’t won a Super Bow, either, at least not in the modern day era we’re playing. Heck, the Raiders haven’t even won a Super Bowl in the previous era. True, San Diego has never won one. But we only won Super Bowls in a different time, and in a different league, for all intents and purposes. How much of the NFL today is similar to the NFL of 1983? Not much. Oh, and we didn’t win the Super Bowl 2002. We just got there. If you’re going to brag about that, then SD fans have every right to brag about getting there in ‘94.

We can quibble over the definition of an “era” all we want to, FLA. The bottom line is it’s been over a quarter of a century since the Raiders have won a Super Bowl. Many of you weren’t even alive the last time the Raiders won a Super Bowl. So I don’t know if Raider fans really have the high ground they once had to mock the Chargers for not having won the Super Bowl. In fact, with each passing season, Raider fans lose more of that right. In 3 years it will have been 30 years since the Raiders have won a Super Bowl, and you and I both know they’re not winning one before then. When the 30 year anniversary of the Raiders’ most previous Super Bowl victory hits, San Diego fans will have some pretty solid ground to stand on when arguing with Raider fans about Super Bowl victories, because they’ll be able to say it’s been 30 years since the Raiders have won one. Oh, for record, hasn’t it been nearly a decade since the Raiders have even beaten the Chargers?

So, shouldas count, now? If Raider fans can claim that the Raiders “shoulda” won more than 3 Super Bowls, don’t fans of every team have that right? The Chargers were never screwed in a playoff game? Almost every team has been at one time or another. The bottom line is that the Raiders have only won 3 Super Bowls, and the most recent one was ages ago. It’s gotten to the point to where the 3 championships only serve the purpose of saving fans’ face in arguments. It’s not helping Al. A Super Bowl he won 30 years ago isn’t making him any money today. No free agent is going to come here for less money because the Raiders won a Super Bowl 30 years ago. It does nothing for the team and organization. It just saves your guys’ asses whenever in a heated debate with fans of other teams. It’s all you have to fall back on. And with each passing year of Raider mediocrity, the foundation becomes weaker and weaker. Using championships from 30 years ago to explain modern day mediocrity is very unconvincing. It was once a knockout blow. It’s now a hug against the ropes.

Florida Pete, so what if I’m not a Raider fan? I’ll be honest, I try to be one. I have trouble having faith in such a horrible organization. And it doesn’t help that so many of the fans are such azz holes. I’m too much of a realist to just put my chips on a team that’s still run by someone who’s failed the past 7 years. What organization keeps a GM with that kind of failure? Al Davis can retire any time he wants. He doesn’t have to sell the team. It’s simple. Just retire, and hire a GM. If the GM doesn’t win, you fire him, and hire another. It’s very simple. So don’t act like it’s some complicating process. The bottom line is that Al doesn’t want to leave because he still wants to be involved, which means he’s still meddling. And this meddler has lost at least 11 games the past 7 seasons. Forgive me for may lack of fanaticism. But I will say this, I’d love to see the Raiders get back on top again. Why do you think I wanted Kiffin to stay?

Since when was playing the game a requirement for watching it, and understanding the object of it? How hard would it be for a lay person, who’s never played to game, to simply look up the standings? To simply watch a game, and understand that the object is to get into the end zone? To understand that the team in silver and black just can’t seem to do it, or stop other teams from doing it? Al Davis’s biggest error the past 7 years is being too impatient to get back on top. He made the consensus picks at the top of the draft…he willingly spent the money in the Free Agent market….and it didn’t work!
Now he is playing the slow but steady build from the draft route…all smart football moves, plus the added impetus of doing it as a Raider to the right players who will undoubtedly become attracted to the most attractive team, with Al Davis’s personna to close the deal.

I know this is a little late, but I had to laugh when I read Charged Up’s Super Bowl prediction.
First of all, he’s pi**ing in the wind about his powder blue-clad heroes, and he knows it. The window has closed on those boys (it actually closed the day they fired Schottenheimer and hired Norval) and all they have now is wishful thinking. Won’t be long before that stadium’s empty, too. Notorious bandwagoners.
Second, no team coached by Jerry Jones will ever win the Super Bowl, much less get there, and you can print that.

Regardless, I’d still be happy to see them winning again. You can’t stop me from being happy. But if the Raiders were to figure out who I was in real life, and write me a letter declining me a season ticket account because of what I said when the team was losing, so be it. Have no control over that. As far as the fans not accepting me, that’s fine. I only have one friend that’s a die hard fan and he knows where I stand on Al. He’d still hang with me. I don’t need any others. I’ll be alright. Obviously, if Al Davis won another Super Bowl, it would shoot holes into my theory, because I obviously predicted that they wouldn’t win again under Al Davis. What kind of point is that? What’s next, you’re going to tell a guy placing a bet that if he loses, he’ll be wrong? Duh.
But let’s take another scenario. What if the league forces Al Davis to retire by some legal means. I know they can’t do it, relax (you guys always jump to the defensive when this scenario is brought up), but let’s say hypothetically they did. And then let’s say our new owner, someone Al perhaps didn’t want, winds up winning a Super Bowl in 3 years. Will you give him props, or will you say downplay his efforts? The Raiders will have just won a Super Bowl, I know I’ll be celebrating. The question is, will you? Will you have jumped ship just because Al isn’t there? And if the answer is yes, isn’t it more accurate to say that you’re not really a Raider fan, just an Al Davis fan? Al Davis can sell the Raiders and buy the Broncos, and you’re a Broncos fan, right? Who’s the real fairweather fan?

You know the only time I really thought you were a true Raider fan? Right after they lost that heart breaker to open last season. That tough loss to SD. You were gung ho. I believe that is when you were talking about getting the JR jersey, which people still give you crap about.
I thought maybe this dude really does have a Silver & Black heart, just like the Grinch, it’s two sizes too small. But shortly after that, you went right back to your jaded old self.

The Raiders played a great game that night, Buckeye. I liked the defensive scheme. I’ve always said the Cover 1 is PERFECT for our talent. Just have one safety free in the middle, forces the QB to throw to our corners, which is TROUBLE. It went like clockwork against Rivers. Then we run that prevent at the end. Thanks, Al. The team’s play had me excited, but the ending of that game proved who was still firmly in charge. I was excited after beating KC, too. Really thought we were 2-0. But everything was back to normal against Denver. It’s almost as if they didn’t practice. I could see Al’s team again. Cable had already lost control

Every year, 1 team wins, 31 teams lose. Al doesn’t play the game to be one of the 31 teams, he plays to be #1 or nothing.
Whether you finish 2nd to 32nd doesn’t matter, that’s why you aren’t and never will be a Raider fan.

We really should run the Tampa 2 with our talent, which is really a tight cover 4. Our corners have the speed for it. We would need more run stoppers in the front 7 but it would just SHUT DOWN pretty much any opponents passing game. Problem is Al wouldn’t want it. Too advanced for him? Would Al’s ego be bruised by the DC using a defense he doesn’t get? lol. I really think that’s true.

Honestly, that’s so silly I don’t know where to start. I’ve been a Raider fan since I was about seven. Over 30 yrs. Let’s just say, hypothetically, If Al left the Raiders behind and went to LA to start a new expansion team, I would not be a fan of the new team. No way.
I’m a Raider fan. Al is part of the package. A big part. But, I’ll still be a fan hopefully long after he is gone.

We ran the Tampa 2…with Lane Kiffin. Remember Al’s projector letter to Lane? “We got KILLED!”
Actually, we do run a Tampa 2 “package” on occasion still.
A 3-4 look, a big nickle, a wolverine, a 5-2 all kinds of D sets.
Its a misnomer that Oakland runs a “vanilla” D. Their base is a 4-3 but they show alot more looks than people realize.

No, Nnamdi, it just so happens I don’t remember Al’s projector press conference, other than how much of an ass he made of himself, which is what everyone outside of his loyal fan base remembers about that press conference. It was Al’s worst hour ever. Solidified that he’s lost it. That being said, the Cover 2 did not get torched against Denver in week 1 of ‘08, DeAngelo Hall did.

I’m happy to go into this season and see how McLaine and Houston help our D. See how the 2 OL we got for good value shape up. To see how much better we will be with Campbell at QB and not that albatross Jamarcus Russell who deserves the fans anger. He is the only one in the whole melange of fans, Al Davis, and players that wasn’t trying.
