OTAs resume this week
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, June 7th, 2010 at 8:36 am in Oakland Raiders.
After taking the week off, the Raiders meet for organized activities Tuesday through Thursday this week, with limited media availability on Wednesday.
Limited, by the way, means all the players coming off at once and heading into a closed locker room, with interview times severely impacted because they happen in five or 10 minutes before coach Tom Cable is available. Since Cable is the only person who divulges information regarding injured players, those who attended and those who didn’t, etc., player interviews end once he starts.
The 49ers, meanwhile, sent out the a media schedule that includes open locker rooms which occur after sessions with coach Mike Singletary, as well as days when offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye and defensive coordinator Greg Manusky are available.
Repeated requests for Raiders offensive coordinator Hue Jackson, one of the most interesting stories of the Raiders offseason, have been denied. Defensive coordinator John Marshall, who might have a few interesting things to say about new middle linebacker Rolando McClain, isn’t available, either.
They’ll be worthy of the spoken word in Napa.
Instead of adhering to the NFL minimum of once open OTA per week, the 49ers are open for media business Monday through Friday this week and Monday through Wednesday next week.
So if you’re wondering why on balance there will be much more written about the 49ers than the Raiders over the next two weeks (although not here, of course) . . .
Raider links
– The Quarterback Whose Name Must Not Be Spoken is working with the Jets Mark Sanchez.
– Surprise! McClain wants to quickly sign for his $20 million or so guaranteed rather than hold out.
(If you’re reluctant to become a subscriber to the Decatur Daily, trust me, there was little else to the story).
McClain said negotiations haven’t yet begun, which isn’t surprising. The starting gun for rookie contracts in most cases, for reasons I’ve never had adequately explained, is around the Fourth of July.
– Cable is is interviewed on Raiders.com, where he says OTA attendance is “the best the Raiders have ever had” and “I like our defense a lot We have a chance to be very good on that side.”
Below the interview is a link which says “Fathers Day Promo. Get 20% Off The Polo Coach Cable is Wearing.”
If I were in the market for a Raiders shirt, I think I’d want more than 20 percent off if Cable has worn it first.

From Steve Wyche NFL.com (NFL Rankings 1-32)
21. Raiders — Oakland could emerge as a playoff team, but that’s if QB Jason Campbell shows that he’s that type of quarterback. He’s an upgrade from JaMarcus Russell, but he’s still a question mark.
—————————————————-
I always love when anyone says the Raiders could be a playoff team. (weather it’s true or not remains to be seen)

Decent article:
With the arrival of Jason Campbell in Oakland, I figured Raiders fans would like to learn more about their new QB. All the talking heads and so-called experts have already told you the basic scouting report so I figured you’d like to hear from actual Redskins fans. The serious ones who really watch every play of every game and post about it on Redskins-related websites. They’ve watched Jason Campbell a LOT closer than John Clayton and/or Peter King.
So I stopped by The Warpath message board and asked them to give all you Oakland Raiders fans the real good news and bad news about your new QB.
Mine might be “The good news is Jason Campbell has a very similar rating and W-L record as Jay Cutler who’s an alleged franchise QB and the Bears gave up a lot more for him. The bad news is Campbell has a similar rating and W-L as Jay Cutler.” Or, “The good news is Campbell is tough as nails and is a real pro’s pro who never complains and just goes about his business. The bad news is his quiet demeanor leads some to speculate that he doesn’t have the IT factor people like to see for leadership from the QB position.”
Here’s a sampling of what some Redskins fans had to say about Campbell:
“The good news is that Jason Campbell isn’t going to lose you many footballs games. The bad news is that he won’t win you very many either. If nothing else, the guy is a class act all the way.” -johno
“The good news is Campbell is a major upgrade over JaMarcus Russell and brings dignity and class to an organization that has none. The bad news is the Raiders owner, head coach, offensive coordinator, and quarterbacks coach are all morons, so, in the end, it won’t make much of a difference.” -BigHairedAristocrat
“Good news: Great at intermediate passes. Bad news: Inconsistent with the quick slant. Also has had miscommunications with his top WR(he throws the ball one way and the receiver goes another way).” -SirClintonPortis (no relation)
“Good news: Once he decides to run, JC is an above-average scrambler that can shrug off hard hits from NFL linebackers. Bad news: His inability to breakdown NFL defenses means that this dangerous skill set is severely underutilized and underdeveloped. It’s more of a last resort option for him. Good news: JC throws a beautiful deep out. Bad news: Inside the ten yard line you give up one major WR and one major TE route. JC is incapable of throwing the end zone fade and he will not target receivers on the back line of the end zone.” -wilsowilso
“The good news is that he’s a major upgrade over JaMarcus Russell and he still has some upside that is yet untapped. He should improve some simply due to maturity, if the system around him is stable and he has decent personnel. He is a solid person and has shown he can lead by example, and understands how to act professionally off the field. The bad news is that he has shown a tendency to fold under pressure, throwing crucial interceptions to end games, and he needs virtually all of the pieces in place in order to become a consistent, winning quarterback.” -freddyg
“The good news about Campbell is that he believes he’s a starter in this league. The bad news about Campbell is that very few teams agree with him.” -diehard
“The best insight I can give is that Campbell has a big arm, but lacks consistent deep accuracy, which pretty much neutralizes his big arm benefits. He is efficient and accurate in the intermediate pass game and is an asset in the short run, but as a standup, pocket QB not having the deep threat is an extreme liability. Bottom line…The 2 things most attributed to Campbell are his big arm and big character. Expect one to help and the other to hurt.” – SkinnyTee
“The good news is that Campbell has the physical tools, is a diligent worker, and is committed to getting better. The bad news is that many of Campbell’s turnovers seemed to come late, when a game winning drive was in order. I never got the feeling that he would develop into a great 2-minute QB.” -SouperMeister
“The good news is that Campbell can learn any system. Bad news is that he can’t play in every system. Good news is that Campbell will keep his mouth shut publicly about playing in a flawed offense, but the bad news is that Campbell will keep his mouth shut about playing in a flawed offense. Good news is that Campbell is a very hard worker. He always tries to stay later than everyone else, studying and working with coaches and trainers. He puts in the effort to be the best. Bad news is that Campbell thinks too much sometimes. He doesn’t just do it.” -Miller101
A poster named Ruhskins breaks it down like this:
“Negatives: Campbell tends to hold on the ball too long; Has problem reading some defenses; Will throw a costly INT or fumble the ball at key situations; Accuracy issues when throwing the deep ball; Once again he will be learning a new offensive system; May or may not have been shell shocked here in DC; Can be too quiet at times.
Positives: Great character; Tough as nails; May have been in the wrong system here in DC; Had his best statistical season last year with bad players around him; Can make plays with his feet, pretty athletic; Has a strong arm; A good offensive line that he can trust may fix some of the problems mentioned above; Oakland actually wants him there.”

That’s pretty funny.

Trade for Patrick Crayton!
—————–
A guy like Crayton would make sense. I wouldn’t trade much for him though because the Cowboys will probably have to cut him before the season starts. The other problem is I think he’s due to make around $5 million on his current deal (could be wrong about that) and that would be about 2x as much as I’d pay Crayton if I’m an NFL owner.
But the idea of getting a veteran WR who still has something left in the tank and can actually play definitely makes sense. Aside from Crayton and T.O. are there any more of those guys available or likely to be available?

I agree 5 mill does seem steep if that is his salary.
I guess are options are limited unless there are some surprise cuts coming coming down the road. I liked him over T.O. because he wouls more than likely be less of a distraction. I think Crayton would like to come to Oakland just like campbell because he has a great chance for a lot of playing time.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) After an inaugural year of in-your-facemask screaming, Kansas City Chiefs coach Todd Haley has vowed to be a bit more mellow.
For someone who coaches with the intensity of a linebacker bearing down on a quarterback, it figures to be a tough transition.
Taught by one of the great screamers of a generation, Bill Parcells, Haley has filled his coaching career with fire. He had an ongoing feud with Terrell Owens in Dallas, a confrontation with Anquan Boldin during the NFC championship game at Arizona and numerous outbursts his first season as Kansas City’s head coach.
Haley has lived up to his word and kept his cool, for the most part, during offseason workouts, but it might be hard to maintain once the season starts.

Brock Williams was drafted by the New England Patriots in the third round of the 2001 NFL Draft.
He was a member of the Patriots during their 2001 Super Bowl championship season and received a championship ring, which he later famously pawned for $2,000 at the pawn shop that is now featured on the TV series Pawn Stars and never picked back up. Williams was offered $15,000 to sell the ring but declined. It is listed for sale at the pawn shop for $100,000.
First stint with Raiders
On October 24, 2002, Williams was signed to the Oakland Raiders practice squad. But after suffering a knee injury, Williams was released from the practice squad on November 19. He was re-signed by the Raiders during the 2003 offseason. On August 28, 2003, Williams was once again released by the Raiders.
Second stint with Raiders
Williams was re-signed by the Oakland Raiders on October 20, 2004. He was waived on October 27. He was re-signed to the Raiders active roster on December 21, 2004. After spending the 2005 offseason, Williams was released at the end of training camp on August 29, 2005.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) Quarterback Daunte Culpepper is still playing professional football, albeit in the United Football League.
The 33-year-old Culpepper, who made five starts and appeared in eight games last season for the Detroit Lions, has signed with the Sacramento Mountain Lions. Culpepper will be reunited with his former Minnesota Vikings coach Dennis Green when the season begins this fall.
Culpepper says he wants to get back on the field and be a regular again and insists this opportunity was something he couldn’t resist.
In 11 NFL seasons with Minnesota, Miami, Oakland and Detroit, Culpepper threw for 24,153 yards and 149 touchdowns.
His new team begins minicamp Thursday – held in a high school stadium – and Culpepper is expected to be in uniform.

The 49ers traded the veteran wideout to the St. Louis Rams today so Bruce could retire with the franchise that brought him into the league in the second round of the 1994 draft. (Both teams announced the trade, though San Francisco seemingly acquired nothing more than a lighter payroll.)

So go interview Jimmy Raye, and quit your complaining. You sound like an eight year old girl.

yet both you and Al Davis read Jerry Mac’s blog! haha
if Jerry’s input means nothing, why come here to read it?
I’m glad we have somebody to be our eyes & ears during the offseason, even if media access is limited …

ET: Agreed
why does it matter how the Raiders go about thier business in the offseason?
all that matters is WINS and LOSSES. does Jackson’s media availability have anything to do with that? no
if anything, it would be a distraction. he’s trying to run the offense – not Cable, and the players reaction and response should tell you all you need to know about that. so far so good

Covering the Raiders is how Jerry puts food on the table. You’d feel the same way in his shoes. Especially when you have fans constantly pestering him for updates. He doesn’t post for a while – fans complain. He explains why there are no posts – fans complain. Can’t win.
I see where you’re coming from too and I’m not too worried about the limited media availability. Just saying is all…
