OTAs resume this week

After taking the week off, the Raiders meet for organized activities Tuesday through Thursday this week, with limited media availability on Wednesday.

Limited, by the way, means all the players coming off at once and heading into a closed locker room, with interview times severely impacted because they happen in five or 10 minutes before coach Tom Cable is available. Since Cable is the only person who divulges information regarding injured players, those who attended and those who didn’t, etc., player interviews end once he starts.

The 49ers, meanwhile, sent out the a media schedule that includes open locker rooms which occur after sessions with coach Mike Singletary, as well as days when offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye and defensive coordinator Greg Manusky are available.

Repeated requests for Raiders offensive coordinator Hue Jackson, one of the most interesting stories of the Raiders offseason, have been denied. Defensive coordinator John Marshall, who might have a few interesting things to say about new middle linebacker Rolando McClain, isn’t available, either.

They’ll be worthy of the spoken word in Napa.

Instead of adhering to the NFL minimum of once open OTA per week, the 49ers are open for media business Monday through Friday this week and Monday through Wednesday next week.

So if you’re wondering why on balance there will be much more written about the 49ers than the Raiders over the next two weeks (although not here, of course) . . .

Raider links

– The Quarterback Whose Name Must Not Be Spoken is working with the Jets Mark Sanchez.

– Surprise! McClain wants to quickly sign for his $20 million or so guaranteed rather than hold out.

(If you’re reluctant to become a subscriber to the Decatur Daily, trust me, there was little else to the story).

McClain said negotiations haven’t yet begun, which isn’t surprising. The starting gun for rookie contracts in most cases, for reasons I’ve never had adequately explained, is around the Fourth of July.

– Cable is is interviewed on Raiders.com, where he says OTA attendance is “the best the Raiders have ever had” and “I like our defense a lot We have a chance to be very good on that side.”

Below the interview is a link which says “Fathers Day Promo. Get 20% Off The Polo Coach Cable is Wearing.”

If I were in the market for a Raiders shirt, I think I’d want more than 20 percent off if Cable has worn it first.

Why is it soooooo necessary to muzzle Hue Jackson and not let him speak to the media?

  • http://www.car.org KoolKell

I guess we can expect Davis to pick a contract fight with Rolando McClain as well, keep him out of the first weeks of camp, perhaps.

and that is what Tom Cable gets paid for these days. to be the puppet, fall guy (if neccessary) and media spokesman

He’s obviously no longer coaching. just giving rah rah speeches, watching and when the games roll around he’ll be our Time Out Coordinator (as Dakota points out)

Cable is the voice of Coach Davis.

Herrerra is the voice of Owner/GM Davis.

    get it?

easier to run the team this way, with 1 guy in each dept toting the company line to the media. less damage control that way.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) After an inaugural year of in-your-facemask screaming, Kansas City Chiefs coach Todd Haley has vowed to be a bit more mellow.

For someone who coaches with the intensity of a linebacker bearing down on a quarterback, it figures to be a tough transition.

Taught by one of the great screamers of a generation, Bill Parcells, Haley has filled his coaching career with fire. He had an ongoing feud with Terrell Owens in Dallas, a confrontation with Anquan Boldin during the NFC championship game at Arizona and numerous outbursts his first season as Kansas City’s head coach.

Haley has lived up to his word and kept his cool, for the most part, during offseason workouts, but it might be hard to maintain once the season starts.

Brock Williams was drafted by the New England Patriots in the third round of the 2001 NFL Draft.

He was a member of the Patriots during their 2001 Super Bowl championship season and received a championship ring, which he later famously pawned for $2,000 at the pawn shop that is now featured on the TV series Pawn Stars and never picked back up. Williams was offered $15,000 to sell the ring but declined. It is listed for sale at the pawn shop for $100,000.

    First stint with Raiders
On October 24, 2002, Williams was signed to the Oakland Raiders practice squad. But after suffering a knee injury, Williams was released from the practice squad on November 19. He was re-signed by the Raiders during the 2003 offseason. On August 28, 2003, Williams was once again released by the Raiders.

    Second stint with Raiders
Williams was re-signed by the Oakland Raiders on October 20, 2004. He was waived on October 27. He was re-signed to the Raiders active roster on December 21, 2004. After spending the 2005 offseason, Williams was released at the end of training camp on August 29, 2005.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) Quarterback Daunte Culpepper is still playing professional football, albeit in the United Football League.

The 33-year-old Culpepper, who made five starts and appeared in eight games last season for the Detroit Lions, has signed with the Sacramento Mountain Lions. Culpepper will be reunited with his former Minnesota Vikings coach Dennis Green when the season begins this fall.

Culpepper says he wants to get back on the field and be a regular again and insists this opportunity was something he couldn’t resist.

In 11 NFL seasons with Minnesota, Miami, Oakland and Detroit, Culpepper threw for 24,153 yards and 149 touchdowns.

His new team begins minicamp Thursday – held in a high school stadium – and Culpepper is expected to be in uniform.

why does it matter how the Raiders go about thier business in the offseason?

all that matters is WINS and LOSSES. does Jackson’s media availability have anything to do with that? no

if anything, it would be a distraction. he’s trying to run the offense – not Cable, and the players reaction and response should tell you all you need to know about that. so far so good
