Cable reverses field on lead back
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, June 9th, 2010 at 7:18 pm in Oakland Raiders.
On second thought, a Darren McFadden-Michael Bush tandem could be the plan in 2010.
Raiders coach Tom Cable’s postseason stance until Wednesday was he was hoping to identify a lead back which could upgrade a running game which sagged in 2009.
Now?
“I think they’re both doing something exciting each day, whether it’s running the ball or pass protecting,” Cable said. “Each one of them has their own strength but they both show up every time we come out here. I actually think their both (No. 1s) and I think it’s a great deal we got going here.”
Bush remained diplomatic saying, “My motto is, `You call it, I’ll haul it,’ so I don’t have a preference as long as I get the ball.” He said he had no idea what the coaches had in store for him but that competition has been stressed.
“We’re two different guys, two different backs, two different players, hopefully they just use us the best we can,” Bush said.
Bush, despite his 240-pound plus payload, chuckles when he is referred to as a power runner, saying, “It’s just me being a bigger guy that makes it seem like that.”
So there’s Bush, the big back who thinks of himself as something else, and McFadden, the supposed breakaway threat who averaged 3.4 yards per carry and has too often gone down too easily.
Asked about the perceived weaknesses in McFadden’s game as a scrimmage runner, Cable acknowledged the Raiders’ top pick in 2008 still has to prove himself in that area.
“I think it’s a mentality thing. I think that we do talk about it,” Cable said. ` I think we’re doing some things (during practice drills) that actually help him a little bit in terms of ball security and having to get down near the ground and keep your balance, those kind of things. But I think he hears it and he’ll do something about it. I believe that.”
Walker has elbow surgery
Neglected to mention earlier today that right tackle Langston Walker missed practice after having elbow surgery which Cable said was not serious.
“(Walker) had some elbow clean-up surgery, taking out some loose bodies, some things like that,” Cable said. “Nothing big, just so we’re ready to go to camp. Felt like it was the right time to do it.”
Erik Pears took the first team snaps at right tackle.

Notice the nice stats from Campbell, but no points until he puts up the meaningless TD at the end of the game.
And fumbles for a TD.

Schilens on Campbell:
“He’s smart, intelligent, throws a good ball,” Schilens said. “He works hard at learning the offense. I’m happy.”
I can’t believe this guy talking like he is the man. What has Schilens done except get hurt. The only reason he is out there ahead of schedule is because Murphy can ball and now DHB is cathing everything.
Plus I really think Schilens reads these blogs and all the T.O. support here. He might be 7th rounder but he’s no Colston.

Just pick up Marshawn Lynch and let DMAC & Bush compete to see who wants to be #2. Maybe both of them will knock off the bullschit and start packing the rock for a meaningful YPC. IMO, Bush can be an up the gut player. DMAC will never be a between the tackles runner. He just doesn’t have the lower end for it. He’s built for speed not for delivering pain. Get him the ball in the open or around the edge either as a run or swing pass and he can deliver some hurt. Short of that, DMAC is a 2.5 YPC when attacking the middle. He’d be a great slot receiver on a permanent basis.

Kind of a trend going here. A couple first half turnovers from Jason, than a TD or two late to make it look better and his stats better. Although the last TD is a sweet azz throw.

Bottom line is I’ll take his 19-26’s all day long.
I can envision those 19 completions having a bigger impact here in Oakland. DHB, McFadden, JLH, Miller, and Schillens will do a lot more with those completions!
June 9th, 2010 at 8:25 pm
19-26 is certainly better than anything we have seen here in awhile.
Not trying to be a hater, well at least too much, I just have never been a fan of Campbell, and to me, his stats are somewhat of a fraud. Lots of meaningless scores at ends of games, and lots of turnovers at beginning of games.
But I’ve been wrong before, and the season is a few months away, and it is a long season.
Go Jason Campbell and go Bruce Gradkowski.

I’m not sure if you can teach patience and how to read blocks but DMC is f’ing horrible at it. Seen him several times run up the backs of his linemen and roll their ankles.
He’s ALMOST as bad as Justin Fartgas was at it. ZERO field vision.
Frankly, said it b4, say it again, DMC needs to be untouched in order to maximize his gifts so we’d better have our run blocking down pat or line Pears up at TE again all year.
Man, that ONE drive against Denver where we did that was AMAZING.
Can’t recall seeing us do it again and it showed.
I can see why we may not have what with so many O line injuries last year, but with some depth maybe this year.

Campbell is a SERIOUS upgrade from JaMarcus, and I’d like to think at least better than Brad. Considering all the turmoil in Washington, we HAVE to be WAY better off with him as starter. If not, we still have Brad, who was good for us last year.

The University of Southern California has lost 20 scholarships and will not be allowed to participate in a bowl game for the next two seasons, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times. The news was first Tweeted by Bruce Feldman of ESPN.
The reported punishments applied to the Trojans stem from a four-year NCAA investigation into allegations centering around the relationship of former USC Heisman Trophy winning running back Reggie Bush and an agent. The allegations were that Bush’s mother and stepfather were provided a San Diego-area home in exchange for Bush signing on with the owner of the house (a would-be agent) as a client.

I think it’s good news that Bush and Dmac will be used as a tandem instead of one being designated as the fulltime starter. It means ( I think) that Hue has looked at their relative strengths and weaknesses and come up with ways to them to divesify the offense and be more effective situationally.
At least I hope that’s what it means.

Pete Carroll never tried a 73 yard FG as a Raider coach, while trying to sabotage the season.
Thus, the free pass to Carroll. I hate USC so I am kind of happy he did it, and even more happy Lance has to lay in his bed of crap.
June 10th, 2010 at 6:53 am
JFB,
That saying is old-school, man. The game is different now. Unless you have a superstar you have to have two good ones, and even the teams with the all-pros have good backs spelling them from time to time.
The days when one back gets all the carries are over, at least for now, and it makes sense. When you have a guy that can take 10-12 carries and give the main back a break it can extend the main back’s career another three years, probably. Also reduces the chances of a tired back getting injured, and keeps the defense dealing with fresh legs for the whole game.
June 10th, 2010 at 6:54 am
Barnes is not the snitch
Campbell WILL beat out Cooper Carlisle
And Walker is just fine.

Nick Miller released.
——————————————————
The Oakland Raiders completed their third out of four organized team activities. The offense was the better of the two units, which is something that is in complete opposition to the year before.
Players who were absent: Nnamdi Asomugha, Issiah Ekejiuba, Chris Johnson, William Joseph, Langston Walker, & Sam Williams
Both Nick Miller and Chaz Schilens were healthy and practicing. Miller looked like he was shaking off some rust. Schilens looked sharp.

JFB,
The jammers (The ones with the stars on their helmets) are the smaller, more nimble ones whose job is to navigate through the pack to score points. They are plenty physical (one team’s main jammer used to be an MMA fighter), but it’s the blockers and pivots you have to watch out for.
Just to give you an idea; my daughter is 5′10″ and weighs around 165 pounds, and she is primarily a blocker but also jams from time to time.
She is considered small for a derby girl.

I expect he becomes like the current Westbrook. Out of the NFL.

It is okay to hate Kobe. I hated Michael Jordan. He was overhyped to an amazing extent, playing and winning championships in an era of expansion teams and only after Magic, Bird and the Pistons were old and there was no one else to contest with. MJ was great, but he isn’t the best NBA player ever…his last three championships were dependant on the refs calling fouls every time he missed a shot. MJ, only man in history that could be fouled on a fade away jumper…

BSJ: Cable said we were only keeping 2 TE’s
he lied to me!
Tony Stewart did have more playing time and receptions than Myers …
but I’d rather have a #2 TE that can block. give me Myers (even if we’re only keeping 2 this year)

and if Zach gets his brains scrambled again? then what?
June 10th, 2010 at 7:55 am
You and I go at it for fun and we can walk away and talk civilly afterwards. There is a difference. With Jhill and Rockstar I could just feel a permanent animosity building in their conversation and since they are both great contributors I thought an intervention was necessary so that it didn’t escalate to the point where they both had to snipe at each other 24/7.
As you know, I am all for a good argument…especially with socialist Euros who think the Soviet Union saved the day…

Young kid slipped, thats why rookies usually arent allowed to talk to the media

I am not a conspiracy theorist but there has been horrible officiating both ways. Kobe was called on a lot of “ticky tack” fouls as well as Pierce and Allen in diffrent games. I hope the games aer decided by the players not the refs. If Ray Allen would have shot even 30 percent from the field last game the Celtics would have won. It is the truth. Lakers were not shooting the ball well at all. I am sure Kobs will not miss 19 shots tonite, but on the other hand neither will Pierce and Allen. Looking foward to the game. GO CELTICS!

I read through all the opinions here about the draft and I must say that most comments have valid reasoning whether they are in support of d-line help or taking the RB at #4.
IMO the Raiders are sitting pretty no matter who they end up taking at #4, or in the event of a trade-down there are many very good options. The Raiders are in a no-lose scenario this draft. Absolutely fantastic!

This is certainly a taxing situation for new USC coach Lane Kiffin, who is widely regarded as one of the most respected and honest coaches in college football*. Kiffin has fought considerably in his career to climb the coaching ladder** by working diligently in building strong winning records*** and establishing legacies at every stop along the way****. However, with only a two-year ban, Kiffin should have more than enough time to continue rebuilding and help return the Trojans to national title contention when the ban is lifted in 2012.

If Kiffin keeps it up, soon the Al-loving portion of Raider Nation will turn on Kiffin for telling the truth about Al and then Al can fire Kiffin without as much of a fan backlash as he would have experienced back in January. Al will claim insubordination as grounds for the firing and refuse to honor the contract. Good luck trying to collect your money Kiffin.

Cable also said the team is working with McFadden on breaking tackles and developing a “mentality” not to go down upon contact. That’s the rap on McFadden and “he hears it and wants to do something about it,” Cable said.

I saw your comments on the camp out, truly a bad experience.
I saw your comments to Rich about the fishing trips.
I went fishing twice with my dad, never again. He swore the whole time and when I mentioned how relaxing it was and fun, I received a long lecture of fishing. Needless to say I didn’t fish anymore.
After college, I and three other friends went fishing. Two were married and the other two were single. I was one of the single guys and we anticipated how those married guys, were going to go all out and have a great time. The married guys thought we partied hard all the time, and we would party hard all night.
On the Lake in the boat, nobody said hardly a word, they just looked into the water, mesmerized by the water. Maybe the drinking binge caused some of the discomfort, or just not enough sleep.
I concluded to fish with friends, you need an out going group who doesn’t give a dam about catching fish, and to just have fun.
I have a gut feeling Rich would be fun, we know he has strong opinions, so the flow of opinion talk should keep the fishing trip moving along. I bet you would be the same way.
End of my fishing story.

Raiders add new offensive linemen
Written by Bret Armstrong
Wednesday, 09 June 2010 18:49
Tom Cable announced that current starting right tackle, Langston Walker, had some elbow clean-up surgery, but said it was, “Nothing big, just so we’re ready to go to camp.” Possibly in response, the Raiders added two new offensive tackles to the preseason mix, Allen Smith and Elliot Vallejo. Neither player has been added to the team’s online roster yet.
The addition of tackles suggests that the Raiders understand they still have a need for depth on the offensive line. Adding rookies Jared Veldheer and Bruce Campbell will be very helpful, but it’s also good to see even more faces come in and create competition amongst the offensive line.
Vallejo was actually added to the Raiders practice squad at the end of last season. He is a two year-pro from the University of California-Davis. A 6′7″ 312 pound tackle, Vallejo was a star on the field but he also excelled in the classroom as an engineering student. After the 2008 draft, Vallejo was picked up by the Arizona Cardinals as a free agent. He was under the tutelage of legendary offensive line coach Russ Grimm on the Cardinals’ practice squad. Now he’ll be under the tutelage of two great offensive line coaches in their own right, Tom Cable and Jim Michalczik.
Smith (6′4″, 300lbs.) played his college ball at Stanford under highly coveted Cardinal’s head coach Jim Harbaugh. He started seven games as a left tackle during his sophomore year, earned 12 consecutive starts during his junior year, and suffered a torn patella just three games into his 2007 senior year. He missed the entire 2008 season as a fifth-year senior while recovering from the patella injury. As a sixth year-senior in 2009 (received a medical hardship and sixth year of eligibility), Smith suffered a sprained ACL in his right knee; tough goings for the young man, but he looks like he has an upside if he can manage to stay healthy. Levi Damien told me that Cable singled Smith out as playing great in his first couple of OTA practices.

I’ll say it right now if DHB continues this into the regular season, this team can do a lot of damage. There is no way you can defend that kind of speed if he has confidence in himself. That kid is to big and way to fast to defend.
If DMC can bring some lightning out of the backfield to match it we can win some games. The way Campbell is throwing the football makes those two indefenseable. Again it’s the regular season that counts but you can’t get good during the season without gaining that all important confidence now.
IMO Bush is a given, I’m not at all worried about what he can do. He is as skilled a runner at that size that you can possibly ask for. He will perform it’s the speedsters that need to step up. I’m not even counting on Chaz if he’s healthy it’s a major plus but the key is Murphy and what DHB can get done. No team can defend that.

This team has so many holes that debating over what position to draft is such an exercise in futility.
Guess what, we drafted a RB, QB and WR, and we still need one of each. I’m sure if we drafted Adrian Peterson, Percy Harvin and Matt Ryan nobobdy would be wanting “beef” and we would be division champs.

No, if we had drafted those guys Bo would be pissed at AP because he fumbles too much and wouldn’t be getting near the yards behind our POS o-line, Ryan would have been injured because of the POS o-line, and Al would have converted Harvin to a DB.
June 10th, 2010 at 2:20 pm
Priest
The magic word in your first sentence is “IF” And yes cover two can defend the passing game,”IF” the players fully know the concept of their roles. A good Tampa Two can really shut down a deep driven window passing game. As well a cover “o” or one.
A running game is how to defeat a Tampa Two, so your directive of Bush or Mcfadden can be a big help in the drop backs of the linebackers will be limited so smaller windows can be available.
June 10th, 2010 at 2:22 pm
AP fumbles way too much, but he buys himself a little leeway by playing hurt and banging out 1,500+ yards.
Not as easy to overlook a fumbling problem when you rush for 350 yards and miss one out every 4 games.
June 10th, 2010 at 2:22 pm

We may not have those three but if what we’re hearing now continues it will be just as good. DHB is a phenom if he can produce and DMC playing well is nothing to sneeze at. IMO Matt Ryan is nothing extraordinary. I think Campbell has the chance to be as good if not better. AP is where we come up short.
June 10th, 2010 at 2:24 pm

June 10th, 2010 at 2:26 pm

June 10th, 2010 at 2:27 pm
Priest,
I am on record as saying DHB leads all non-QB’s on this team in TD’s next year. That Dallas TD last year was fairly impressive, just smoked that guy and boxed him out with his size. He may only catch 40 balls, but he might have 7 TD’s.
It sounds funny, but he did everything really, really well last year, except that one little bug-a-boo catching the ball. Besides that he had an arena league worthy QB throwing him the ball, and an awful play-caller.
June 10th, 2010 at 2:27 pm
Priest
My comment back to you is give me examples or tell me players who can out run a two deep zone, and please don’t call me a dummy.

June 10th, 2010 at 2:29 pm
Speed will always 100% of the time dominate any defense you can’t stop unadulterated speed. Have you ever seen a cover2 stop Randy Moss? he’s seen a TON of them his entire careeer.

Sorry to jump in on the discussion so late…
I searched walmart.com for stores in the Bay Area and was supremely annoyed by the lack thereof. I ended up going with my friend Dan to Draegers all the time (he had a hard time getting around on his own and demanded to go to the most expensive places for EVERYTHING that he ever needed). I kept saying, “Why not just go to Safeway?” He’d come up with the whole retarded “Expensive means better quality” argument every time and I finally relented and just said, “Well, I’m already HERE… may as well do my grocery shopping.” If I had to feed a family, it would have been suicide to pay those prices, but I was making really good money and only had myself to feed, so I got over it. Their hot soups by the checkout aisles… ESPECIALLY the Chicken Tortilla with Tomatoes… almost made it worth the cost.

I appreciate the two example given, Moss and Pittsburgh (not defending Branch)
So let me back track here, your sentence seems to indicate that this blazing speed works all game, or is a likely happening.
My defense to you is whether it’s cover 0ne , zone, or Tampa two, touchdowns will be thrown by QB’S to Wide receivers.
The Tampa two defense or any zone is to have limited passing windows for the QB, so a timing routes or short passing game is more effective.
When Branch was with the Raiders, one of my all time favorites, he did score on Pittsburgh, but he was defended alot by a zone. Based on what you just said he should have caught more balls and had more touchdowns than his current stats show.
I don’t count the games in Three Rivers, bad conditions, ice cold, but his playing game stats in Oakland don’t jump out and say what you just said in your earlier comments.

DHB has never been a “phenom”…not in high school, not in college…so how can you call him that now?
***********************************
I don’t know about that, he wasn’t the most touted prospect, but he started as a freshman and was one of the best freshman WR in the country. After his second year he was considered a potential first round pick, and after his junior year he was wildy regarded as a for-sure 1st rounder (just not#7).
+++++++++++++++
Guess we have a different understanding of the definition of “phenom” lol. If 40 catches and 4 Tds per year in college = “phenom” I guess there is a schyt load of “phenoms” in college football.

McGruff never saw this one coming.
McGruff the Crime Dog, the stern but beloved police mascot who teaches children how to stop crime before it happens, became a victim himself this weekend when a Metro bus driver punched him in the face as a stunned group of children watched, authorities said.
McGruff, who is played by D.C. Police Officer Tyrone Hardy, was passing out fliers to children at the corner of 14th Street and Spring Road in Northwest Washington around 2:30 p.m. Saturday when a Metrobus pulled up to the curb.
The bus driver, 38-year-old Shawn Brim, climbed out of the bus, adjusted both side-view mirrors and then slugged McGruff in the face with his closed fist, according to a police report. Because the huge McGruff head offered little visibility, Hardy didn’t see the punch coming, one officer said.
McGruff staggered, children screamed, and the crime dog’s attacker jumped back into the bus and drove off, police said. A call of an assault on a police officer went out over the police radio while passengers on the bus yelled at Brim.
D.C. police working with McGruff hopped in their cruisers and pulled over the Metrobus three blocks away. Brim, 38, later told a supervisor that he was trying “to be funny,” Metro spokeswoman Candace Smith told The Examiner on Monday.
“But nobody here finds it funny, believe me,” Smith said. “That kind of behavior is not tolerated.”
Hardy was left with a swollen right cheek but refused to be taken to the hospital by D.C. paramedics. Hardy called in sick Monday.
“He was in good spirits but seemed more concerned that the attack upset the kids,” police Lt. Alan Thomas said.
Brim was charged with simple assault. His arraignment had not been scheduled as of Monday afternoon.
Brim, who has been employed by Metro since 2003, will undergo drug and alcohol testing by Metro officials, and his future with the agency is under review, Smith said. Brim has a history of arrests in the District of Columbia, including on suspicion of prostitution on Oct. 30, 2006, possession of PCP in 1994 and possession of a gun in 1990, according to court records. In each case, prosecutors declined to file the charges in court.
All Metro transit employees go through background checks when hired, Smith said. Metro applicants are not eligible for hire if they have one felony conviction within the last three years or two within the last 10 years. Applicants with multiple arrests or convictions for lesser crimes will be less likely to be hired, Smith said.

You’re one great salesman. If I didn’t know any better, and dropped down from Mars, or North Dakota, and met you, and then you described to me how blazing speed could never be defended, I would assume all the games would be scored in the hundreds.
Some times during the course of a game speed matters, yet, if you look at the history of the NFL, more games have been played with less than 35 points scored.
I guess I missed something there. Zones do work and yes, they have breakdowns also.

JustFB,
I agreed wholeheartedly with BHP that JaWasn’t had the potential to be the greatest QB ever for the Raiders. When it became apparent that the kid just didn’t give a rat’s azz about being that I personally saw only daggers aimed at that fat lethargic waste. I have no idea why BHP held onto his notions as long as he did when JaBlob showed he was less than zero.
June 10th, 2010 at 5:06 pm
The quarterback controversy for the Oakland Raiders remains a hot topic amongst every Raider fan that bleeds silver and black.
JaMarcus Russell has all the tools, and yet Bruce Gradkowski has all the desire.
Going into the 2009 season, many Raiders fans and even the sports media believed that the Raiders had a chance to be competitive or at least give NFL and Raider fans alike something fun to watch.
Instead, we were subjected to more of the same anemic offense under JaMarcus Russell, until coach Tom Cable benched Russell in favor of Bruce Gradkowski.
In only a few starts, Gradkowski gave the sports world a reason to believe that the Raiders were close to contention and that coach Cable wasn’t far fetched in claiming that the Raiders would be back to the postseason.
The Raiders were no longer systemically dysfunctional, as has been the narrative since 2003. And dare I say it that Al Davis could ultimately have the last laugh!!!
June 10th, 2010 at 5:08 pm
Priesttj is familiar with the musings of Allen Davis, period.
June 10th, 2010 at 5:09 pm
The issue with Jamarcus was not that he didn’t have talent, smarts or didn’t care. The issue with Russell was he was NOT coachable. He would not listen to Kiffin, nor DeFillipo, he would not listen to Hackett, he would not listen to Tollner, he would not listen to Cable and Davis thought he would bring in Hue Jackson to knock some sense into him. When Jackson found out in four minutes he wouldn’t listen to HIM either, the Raiders let him go.
June 10th, 2010 at 5:10 pm
FatKidd,
It is a good thing that NFL refs never blow a call, or collude with the NFL powers that be to make ill-fated decisions, or intentially screw a certain team, or favor certain teams or favor certain players because then the NFL would give advantages to people like Brady and Elway just like MJ got from the NBA… oh… wait a moment…

I don’t think Jamarcus realized the amount of work that is required of a NFL QB. I think he thought it would kind of be like college, which it is not, ESPECIALLY for QB’s.
Once he saw the work required, it became a burden to him. Had a good friend who has hung out with Jamarcus numerous times, says there was always talk amongst Jamarcus and his crew about life after football, owning businessses and doing things, as if football was just getting in the way.
I hope he still wants to do something good, and who knows maybe he will find a passion in business. Now that he is not our problem, I wish him luck.

‘Sup fellas?
How’s everybody doing?
Here’s my take on the NFL imposed OTA penalties: While it’s a shame the Raiders are going to lose the OTA’s, lord knows this young team can use all the reps they can get, there is a silver lining. The Raiders are working hard, and maybe just maybe, regaining a little bit of their former nastiness and physicality.
Especially Lammar Houston. He sounds like a surly rascal. I think it might have been newly acquired running back Rock Cartright who complained to the players union. Seems like Jerry mentioned him taking exception to Houston slamming him to the ground during a “noncontact” drill. Just my opinion.

Read the previous thread before I logged on. Just wnted to throw my two cents in. Love Tarentino. Pulp Fiction is probably my favorite movie. I like the dialogue in his movies. One of my favorite scenes in Reservoir Dogs is the opening where they’re just sitting around at breakfast talking about tipping the Waitresses.
Kubrick also. Love Full Metal Jacket. The first half of that movie, the boot camp with R. Lee Ermey. Classic.
One I don’t think any body mentioned is Dr. Strangelove. George C. Scott in the War Room with the Big Board. Peter Sellers playing multiple roles including the German scientist with the reflexive Zieg Heils. Very funny movie.
