Can Kiffin coach? Now we’ll know

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, June 10th, 2010 at 7:07 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Nobody was quite sure when Lane Kiffin received the overhead projector treatment courtesy of Al Davis if he could coach or not.

It was no more clear when he surfaced at Tennessee, where things remained muddled with a 7-6 record after a single season before leaving for what he called his “dream job” at USC.

After winning 12 of 33 games as a head coach in the NFL and the Southeastern Conference, Kiffin has a chance to go well beyond his words and prove himself.

If he keeps USC afloat with the loss of 30 scholarships over the next three years and survives the two years of bowl exile to return the Trojans to their rightful place atop the whatever-they’re-going-to-call-it conference, there will be no more doubting young Lance.

(To review, because I’ve received this question a time or three, Davis called him `Lance’ at his introductory press conference, and to Davis-watchers and Raider-watchers everywhere, he’ll never be known as anything else)

Former USC coach Pete Carroll, Kiffin’s coaching mentor other than his father, said he is shocked by the sanctions imposed by the NCAA. Kiffin did his best Sgt. Schulz routine before the media, saying he saw nothing and knew nothing regarding any improprieties.

Never mind that Kiffin started coaching at USC in 2001, became recruiting coordinator in 2004, and that the recruiting coordinator knows everything that has gone on in their program well before they take over the role.

And disregard the fact that Kiffin had issues with the NCAA during his short-lived stay in Tennessee.

Who knows, he may be longing for the days where the worst that could happen was losing a couple of OTAs for working the guys too hard.

They’re probably wondering at 1220 Harbor Bay Parkway and in Knoxville if Kiffin will be once again on the move, leaving wreckage in his wake.

What if the Trojans can Mike Garrett and bring in an A.D. who thinks all vestiges of the Carroll era _ of which Kiffin was a major player _ should be erased?

Early indications are the Trojans will appeal and stand their ground, with Kiffin shrugging his shoulders and separating himself as much as possible from a fate he likely helped create.

That may not be enough to satisfy Davis or the Knoxville hordes, but at least we’ll find out if Kiffin can coach.

  • jhill

    I see it now …

I’m really happy for RRS, Dakota, and ROG!

They got their NT so it should be pretty peacful around here amoungst us.

I got my DEs and LBs so I’m good, and my boy DHB is on track.

JFB, Lefty, and the rest of you got your wish to get Russell outta here.

    Is there anything left?

  • DMAC

    Jhill,
    I still have my wish.
    See post 449^^^^^^^^

  • jhill

    Campbell will start at RG!

  • RaiderRockstar

I was so nervous that scrubs like Joseph, Boschetti, Cooper & Heard were going to make the team!

Henderson, Kelly, Bryant & Seymour will be the rotation.

Shaughnessy, Houston, Richardson & Groves at DE.

Seymour & Houston can flip flop on occasion

Serioulsy, how many teams out there have elite LB’s, stout DE’s and a rotation of active 330 pounders in the middle?

Not too many, and they certainly didn’t build it in an offseason or two.

    ***************************************

LOL….so much for that bit of genius.

We do, and we did it in two years!!

  • jhill

That a pretty solid 8 RRS.

And when you factor in Scott and Wimbley dropping down to DE in passing situtions, I’d say that’s a pretty nice upgrade from last year!

  • DMAC

    Walker will be back.
He’s definetly an upgrade at RT over Corn.
    We need our RG now!

  • RaiderRockstar

the offense is clicking and the defense just got a whole lot better all the way around

don’t expect to see McBush prancing through the middle of the D-Line with contact during training camp!

. Now we have two guys Seymour and Henderson that can play inside and outside , that’s going to lead to multiple formations and schemes Marshall can use.

  • MistaBrown

Dakota are you swinging your purse in anger?

    I’m gonna tell Jhill..

  • DMAC

    ?????????????????????????????????????

    Who made this move happen??
    Uncle Al

    Cable guy

    Waffle

    Marshall

    I got your response Lynn

    Agreed! feels strange, doesn’t it?

    run defense = solved

I’m calling it now. Top 5 overall defense if Al Davis butts out

    He’ll be fine.

Even Barnes at RT and Campbell at RG is an upgrade over what we had last year.

  • niceguymoe

Now we just need a center and we’ll be competitive every week

    What does it say Lynn???

  • Jonesy941

our d is looking nice kind slow in the LB area coverage is going to be exploited.

It’s still early in regards to the O line with the rookies and how they bode but, yes protection for Campbell will be key especially when we go “VERTICAL”

  • Just Fire Baby

LMAO at Huff clowning guys with mo-hawks!!!!

  • RaiderRockstar

i’m not sure. I haven’t seen enough out of either player yet

it’s not hard to imagine somebody being an upgrade over Carlisle/Green though … I’ll give you that!

be sure to pick up the Raiders defense!

  • Jonesy941

hahaha we’ll see about that one.

i had new orleans saints defense last year and they were surprisingly good

  • RaiderRockstar

even with OTA’s being a little too physical, McFadden was busting out 100 yard runs and Bush was looking like Earl Campbell or Jerome Bettis.

you think this had anything to do with adding a starter quality nose tackle ???

  • SD_Raider_619

Hey Raider Ron chupa la verga de tu jefe pinche culero de mierda. If you want to get it out of SAP, I just said you are a straight up Biatch (I always like to paraphrase) hahahahahaha!!!!!! Come to SD anyday and I will show what a dirty mexican can do!!!!!! Other then that when is the Raiders next OTA???

  • DMAC

    I don’t know…
Many of you won’t agree w/ me, but I think Coach Cable has had alot to do w/ this nice off season.

  • ELWAYs TEETH

    +++++++++++++

Lol, so Cable winning 5 games and then left out swinging in the wind for the first several months of the offseason by Al Davis and then being emasculated and busted down to Assistant O-line coach/Timeout Coordinator and the fact that nothing like this happened last year when Cable was here makes you believe that?

    Yes sir!!

  • 310 Raider-scum

I am starting to really like the D-line vesatilty, coupled with outside pass rushing LB’s. They are going to destroy our O-line when they put pads on in Napa. I’m still a little worried about coverage abilities of some of our LB’s. But, if you have pressure on the QB and sure tackling on screens, we should be ok. Trevor Scott’s cover skills are going to be the wildcard, he looks to have pretty good instincts of the position. Also, should we be concerned with the league or media response when Cable slaps the hell out of Henderson before the Tenn game.

  • DKnight007

    Yeeeaaahhhhhh!

Raiders FINALLY sign the guy I wanted…. BIG DT JOHN HENDERSON, to add depth, strength, experience and leadership to that D-Line!

Yeah, baby it’s going to be nice to add him to that DT rotation to help stuff the run!

He will bring alot of leadership and character to that locker room as well!

    Good bargain basement signing!

    Screw Albert Haynesworth!

to answer the NASCAR question. Phoenix Racing is a little fish in a mighty big pond. Hendrick, Roush, Gibbs and other big names are the players.
