Raiders could get stationary target
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, June 15th, 2010 at 9:00 am in Oakland Raiders.
Ordnarily, a first-time offender in the eyes of the NFL gets the benefit of the doubt.
However, it’s conceivable Tennessee quarterback Vince Young could ride Ben Roethlisberger’s coat tails and be slapped with a one-game suspension _ meaning he’d miss the season opener against the Raiders.
Young was 8-2 as a starter after replacing Kerry Collins for the Titans last season, reviving a career that appeared dead in the water because of personal issues and poor play. An alleged assault caught on film at a strip club at 3:30 a.m. may be enough for Commissioner Roger Goodell to follow up the six-game Roethlisberger hammer and put Young out of action.
Collins is a more dangerous medium range and deep thrower than Young but much easier to prepare for considering the Raiders will have an entirely new corps of linebackers. They can play run or pass, and not be concerned with a quarterback which can get them out of position with his feet.
Add to that the status of running back Chris Johnson, the 2,000-yard running back who could sit out much of training camp in a contract dispute, and the Raiders timing appears good.

LMN,
dude, i always mix you up between Copenhagen and Amsterdam. Maybe I am obsessed with the red light district. Anyways, is Winston Reid really a Dane?
_________________________________________________________
Winston Reid (21yo) was born in New Zealand, but at age of 9 he came to Denmark, all his schooling (football as well as books) have been provided by us Danes, he has Danish citizen-ship, he played on the Danish National U-teams..
but in March 2010 he decided to play for New Zealands National team, because the road to the Danish team was too long, so he became an instant starter, where as he would have to wait 2-3 years to be a starter on the Danish team..
He of course say its because his ties to New Zealand is stronger than his Danish ties, but he has been here for more than 12 years, and we all know ones teens are way more important than the baby years..
so he is totally blacklisted IMO, but he is good, had he just have had the patience, he could have gotten a deal like Daniel Agger or Simon Kjær..

For all their remarkable success over the past three seasons, including the 2008 title and another finals run this year, the Celtics have converted just one of their eight chances to finish a playoff series away from home.
They’ve got two opportunities at Staples Center, which could be the fifth building in which the Celtics have won a title at the expense of their longtime rivals – or the site of a remarkable Hollywood ending for the Lakers. If Los Angeles survives Tuesday, a champion will be crowned Thursday in Game 7.
“They’re playing at home. Home is always where your heart is,” Garnett said. “With the severity of the game, it’s all-out on both ends for both teams. This will probably be the hardest game of the season, if not of the series, if not of everybody’s career, this game coming up.”
Even after winning three of the series’ last four games, and even after compiling the NBA’s second-best road record in the regular season (26-15), the Celtics can’t be lulled into thinking they’ve got the Lakers on the run.
Although Boston narrowly won Game 2 at Staples Center on the strength of Ray Allen’s historic 3-point shooting binge and Rajon Rondo’s late-game poise, Boston knows the Lakers are 9-1 at home in the postseason, with everybody from Kobe Bryant to the Lakers’ bedraggled bench playing with much more passion and confidence.
“The Lakers … got homecourt advantage, but we’ve played the best all year on the road,” Boston coach Doc Rivers said. “We’re going to have to beat them at their best, because they’re going to be great there, and we can’t expect anything else.”
While the Celtics have ample reason to be confident, Lakers coach Phil Jackson and Bryant also didn’t seem particularly worried before the grand finale. For all their struggles in the past four games, the Lakers realize they’ve usually risen to important occasions over the past three seasons – notwithstanding that 2008 finals blowout loss in Boston’s clincher.
“If you look at it, they’ve come home and carried the 3-2 lead back,” Jackson said. “It’s basically home court, home court. Now we’re going back to home court to win it. That’s the way it’s supposed to be, isn’t it?”
Sure, on paper. In real life, two straight losses in Boston led to a dire series deficit for the Lakers, who hadn’t even trailed in any playoff series this season. Yet Jackson even described the Lakers’ locker room as “spirited” after losing Game 5 in their lowest-scoring performance of the postseason in the 92-86 loss.

Well, seeing as how it’s his team and he’s publicly taken the blame for the last seven years, I would say that his taking the credit if it does turn around would be completely justified and appropriate.
………….
Unless of course it’s not true, and we only win in spite of him. If Cable has to undermine Al at every turn in order to get wins, the way Gruden had to, why should Davis get the credit? This logic that because Davis gets the blame when we lose he would deserve the credit when we win is not necessarily true. If the coach has to in in spite of Al, Al shouldn’t get an ounce of credit for the team winning. But have no worries, Al’s not going to let Cable win anyway.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) Disgruntled Buffalo Bills running back Marshawn Lynch is participating in his first voluntary practice after missing the team’s first 12 sessions this spring.
Bills spokesman Scott Berchtold said Monday that Lynch was on the field during a practice that is closed to the media. It’s unclear whether Lynch will speak to reporters at the conclusion of the session.
Buffalo’s 2007 first-round draft pick is unhappy being in Buffalo, believing he needs a fresh start elsewhere after several run-ins with police over the past two years. Two weeks ago, Lynch spent two days working out at the Bills facility but skipped practice and did not meet with coach Chan Gailey.
The Bills have insisted they have no intention of trading Lynch.

Best since Gannon based on what? He hasn’t done anything for the Raiders yet. If you’re going to go by stats coming in, without having taken a snap yet for the Raiders, Kerry Collins was a much bigger acquisition. Campbell was error prone in Washington and their system is 20 times more organized and simpler for the QB than ours. I wouldn’t be surprised if he were as bad as Russell in Oakland.

We need our QB to be the 2nd best QB in the division to have any consideration of winning it. We don’t just need an upgrade over Jamarcus.

And the Chargers current win streak vs. the Raiders goes a long way toward settling any post season superiority the Raiders have, especially considering how long its been since the Raiders won a Super Bowl. The last Super Bowl the Raiders went to, they got destroyed. SD did the same in ‘94. In this modern era, I think SD’s got the Raiders locked.

And who knows, maybe he can be another of Al’s successful reclamation projects. It’s just that people don’t think he is a reclamation project, as if throwing 20 TD’s to 19 turnovers for a 4-12 team is going to just carry over here and zip us into the playoffs.

They had a different coordinator every year Campbell was the QB…so which SYSTEM are you talking bout….

And every single one of those years under all of those coordinators, their system was more QB friendly than the Raiders have ever been since Gruden’s left.

Just pointing out the significance of the streak. It’s a long time. The Chargers own the Raiders. Period.

in that case so am I. And Grudens system was not QB friendly at all. Ask all the QBs in Tampa
June 15th, 2010 at 12:06 pm
It takes an NFL offensive expert to recognize how impossible it is for a QB to play in Oakland? Didn’t know THAT.
June 15th, 2010 at 12:08 pm
Gruden’s a hard ass, but a QB is 20 times better off in his system than they are in Al Davis’s vertical offense. Ask Rich Gannon.
June 15th, 2010 at 12:08 pm
Campbell’s rookie year, the Skins made the second round of the playoffs.
So it’s not like other QB’s , in this case an old-azzed Mark Brunell, couldn’t succeed in this “broken” system. Hell, they scored 30+ four times that year, including a nice 52 spot they hung on the Niners.
June 15th, 2010 at 12:10 pm
I hope the Raiders beat the Chargers 3X this year!
Yes, I am a Raider fan and I hope my team will win, even is it is statistically against the odds (which it never is, because AL is a good GM).
Once again da’ Raidahz’ look good on paper – AL has done his job – now it’s up to the coaches and the players.

A linebacker in Al’s man coverage system? I dunno. Only corners seem to be happy here. It’s frustrating to everyone else. Being a defender in Oakland means being scapegoated for an outdated system that isn’t your fault.
June 15th, 2010 at 12:23 pm
Here is Campbell’s tenure in Washington:
2005- rookie year, doesn’t play, team goes 10-6 and into second round of playoff.
2006- team struggles under Brunell, 3-6 when benched in favor of JC, and he goes 2-5.
2007- Joe Gibbs last of his 4 years there, team goes 5-7 with Campbell starting, he gets hurt, than goes 4-0 with Todd fkn Collins at QB and sneaks into the playoffs.
2008- Campbell plays all 16 games, team starts hot going 6-2, but they limp to the finish and go 8-8.
2009- Plays all 16 games, team goes 4-12.
Looks to me, that Campbell was the problem, not the Redskins.

Who said Gannon passing 50+ times was a good thing? I know going to the Super Bowl is a huge feat, but I still believe the 2000 team was Gruden’s best here. The balance was perfect. Smash mouth with a west coast passing game. If Al Davis wouldn’t have started running Gruden out of here after the 2000 season, just because Gruden wanted to be paid like a real coach, that 2000 team and system would have only gotten better.

………..
It’s not my equation. It’s the truth. Al can’t be fired. He’s a mainstay only because he’s an owner, otherwise he would have been ran out of the league 20 years ago. Coaches have to win in spite of him. His system and style of management is detrimental to winning, period. A Raider coach’s first job is to undermine Al and clean out his dead wood. That’s why coach’s should get all of the credit when we win, because he’s the one who deserves it.

The point I was making is that once Gruden bombed after the Tampa SB win, it became apparent that his Raider success came because Gannon was excellent and Davis got him the right players.
The Raiders got immediately better offensively after Gruden left. Tampa got worse offensively as Gruden molded the team to his system. Al was right to trade him – Gruden just aint that good as an offensive coach.

Dakota it’s not necessarily how long it’s been since we’ve won a Super Bowl, it’s just Al’s style of management. His stubbornness and overall stupidity. Didn’t someone once say that the difference between a genius and an idiot is that if a genius were an idiot he’d admit it and try to become smarter? Al is just so stubborn and stupid it’s really impossible to get behind him unless you’re a fan of stubbornness and stupidity, which may be the case for some of these guys in here. As far as stats go, the 7 straight years of failure is a lot more glaring than the time since the last SB victory. They’ve grown so much these past few years…you’d think they’d have grown out of diapers by now.
LMN — I see you continue to paint all of the USA with your wide brush of ingorance and distaste…even though you’ve never stepped foot on her soil. Your “absolutes” are some of the most uneducated and presumptuous statements on the blog…usually just to show how superior you are. With laughable effects, actually. Did you really say “we all know ones teens are way more important than the baby years?”
LMN — The ages of 0-9 years-old are as important (and in many ways MORE important) as the teen years are in terms of developing healthy bodies and minds. And the way you speak of that kid from New Zealand, you make it sound like he was raised by wolves and didn’t know how to walk upright before he somehow was saved by the miracles of life only available in Denmark. You are one stubborn know-it-all for a 30-ish guy without a car.

What you’re not getting HayesDaze, is that the Raiders did not “survive” that loss. 7 years later, they still haven’t gotten on their feet. They haven’t won more than 5 games in a season. Gone through countless head coaches and quarterbacks. They haven’t even won 3 games straight. So, the truth is, not everyone bounces back from tough losses. Some people stay down, forever. And Al is one of them, it looks like.

And…yes, even at that fateful Super Bowl, I probably did walk around saying, “It’s a great day to be a Raiders fan. Isn’t it?”
Like all in the Raiders family, I was numb…but not numb in the brain (or heart) enough to let it change my loyalties. Honor and pride last a lot longer than 60 minutes of football played on game days.
Proud to be a Raiders fan. Proud of Al Davis for NEVER GIVING UP. Proud to see MY Oakland Raiders rebuilt…and anxious to see all their hard work pay off.
It IS a great day to be a Raiders fan! Isn’t it?
June 15th, 2010 at 1:27 pm
The misinformed have sadly coupled Al Davis to the Raiders. Al Davis is nothing but a temporary owner who will eventually be gone and the Raiders will move forward without him.
If Al Davis was a CEO he would have been ousted years ago. If he was the GM of another team he would have been fired in the 1990s.
Al is nothing but an impediment and someone for you old guys to look fondly back on and remember him for his great run more than a quarter century ago…good for you, now just get Al out of our way please.

Al Davis is to blame for it all. Our team, which once was the model franchise (27 years ago), has now become the standard bearer for the bottom dwellers of the NFL. Outside of expansion teams, the last 7 years of Raiders football has been possibly the worst, most pathetic showing an NFL team has ever had. We have not had the players, the coaches or the leadership that is required to pull us out of this slump.
Who do I think is to blame? Everyone to an extent, I guess, but there is one constant through it all; Al Davis. It is his team, he makes all of the decisions, he is in complete control of this franchise so how can he not take the blame for the current state of his franchise? He IS THE RAIDERS as some of you are fond of stating. Let’s check the facts all of you Al supporters have been touting.
This is his track record since 1990:
Team Record: 132-172
AFC West Championships: 3 in 19 seasons
Super Bowls: 0-1
Coaches: He hired six losers: , Art Shell, Bugle, White, Callahan, Turner, Tom Cable; and one winner: Gruden. Then traded the winner. And don’t forget Al sabotaging the entire 2008 season simply to build a case against Lane Kiffin.
He drafted these losers in the critical first three rounds : Russell, Huff, Routt, McQuistan, Fabian, Gallery, Grove, Schweigert, Brayton, Teyo, Buchanon, Harris, Jolley, Gibson, Grant, Jano, Porter, Ioane, Stinchcomb, Bryant, D. Russell, Kohn, Dudley, Aska, Folston, Calvin Jones, Patrick Bates, Hobert, McGlockton, Skrepenek, Marinovich.
He drafted these decent to good players: Morrison, Nnamdi, Fargas (only recently played well), Lechler, Woodson, Kaufman, Robbins. Only Robbins, Woodson and Lechler have been perennial pro bowlers. No Hall of Famers in this list.
Moves: He moved the team from LA to Oakland and it blew up in his face.
QBs: Schroeder, Marinovich, Hostetler, George, Gannon, Collins, Brooks and Russell: This is one of Al’s strong points. Schroeder, Hoss, George, Gannon and Collins all had decent stats, but did not always lead the team to victory outside of Gannon.
If you check the facts it is pretty obvious that Al Davis has not performed up to expectations, especially his own expectations over the past 19 seasons or so. The game has moved beyond him. He needs to hire a GM to help him with his decision making; it is clear from the FACTS that Al Davis no longer has the ability to run an NFL franchise PERIOD. No super bowl victories, disgusting draft record, poor choices of head coaches, poor AFC West record, poor overall record, poor decision making in terms of moving his franchise…it all adds up. Pull your heads out of the sand and look at the stark, cold reality of the situation.

Al’s done as Al will do.
The Raiders have done pretty well since Al Davis CREATED the Raiders as we knew them, and as we know them now.
As far as I know, in the good old USA (right, LMN?!)…a guy who OWNS his creation, has the right to do with it what he pleases. And what he pleases, is to stay in the mix. He created the mix, he still gets to stir it.
Al Davis is THE Man. Weird? Quirky?? Nutty??? What great man ever WASN’T some or all of those things? What great man ever just rolled over and accepted failure without trying to right his wrongs? Al never quits, and there’s much to be said right there.
Al Davis was, and is, great for the NFL. Long live Al!

BSJ,
Condo is going to be a Raider for anotheer 10 years.
If you don’t see the value in a quality long-snapper, you should watch the Giants-Niners playoff game they are showing all this week on NFLN.
The Trey Junkin fiasco. Snapping killed their chances of winning a Super Bowl.
June 15th, 2010 at 2:20 pm
Vegas,
I have nothing against Condo’s abilities as a longsnapper, I just do not believe it is necessary to devote a roster spot to him. I don’t recall any bad snaps when our scond string center was doing the job (Treu). Morris is a smallish center and should learn the job, giving us another opening on the game day active list.
