Lakers, Asomugha, bowl over Celtics, Cable

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, June 18th, 2010 at 12:14 pm in Oakland Raiders.

A few notes during the lull before the Raiders begin to sign their draft picks and in between filing stories and preparing for the Allan Green-Andre Ward WBA super middleweight title fight Saturday night at Orcale Arena:

– According to EGA Sports, Raiders cornerback and avid Lakers fan Nnamdi Asomugha won a bet with coach and longtime Celtics fan Tom Cable after Los Angeles beat Boston in seven games Thursday night.

As the loser, Cable will treat the entire team to dinner and bowling at some point during training camp.

– Had the Raiders opened their final organized team activity to the public, sentiment among the players probably would have been similar to that of the Jacksonville Jaguars, the latest team to be docked a couple of OTA sessions.

“We’re looking to push the envelope,” safety Sean Considine said. “If you do that, you’re going to come close to breaking those (OTA) rules. If we pushed it too far, then we’re going to suffer the consequences. I don’t think anybody’s worried about who called the (player) union or turned us in.

“Losing those last two OTAs isn’t going to have anything to do with how we do this season. There’s a message behind that (NFL ruling) that you can find a positive out of it.”

Baltimore and Detroit were the other two teams besides Oakland and Jacksonville to lose OTA time.

It’s no coincidence that player complaints appear to be on the rise given the status of negotiations between the union and ownership for a new collective bargaining agreement.

– The Web site “Cold, Hard Football Facts” analyzes the stunning decline of the Raiders passing game since Super Bowl XXXVII.

Their conclusions? Part of JaMarcus Russell’s problems was the organization he played for and that Al Davis has clearly lost his fastball.

– Profootballtalk.com is reporting Russell could end up in the UFL with the new Omaha franchise. And then later reported Russell woudln’t be going to the UFL after all, instead staying in Arizona to get in shape and refine his mechanics.

Too bad. Raiders fans wishing to relive the good ol’ days with Russell could have traveled to Sacramento to see him Nov. 13 against Daunte Culpepper, Dennis Green and the Sacramento Mountain Lions.

– The wheels of NFL justice are turning regarding Vince Young. A one-game suspension for Young means he won’t face the Raiders in the regular season opener.

Watching fans celebrate over the Lakers was crazy. Imagine if the Raiders won a Super Bowl. The entire state of California might be declared a state of emergency immediately after the game

  6. SilverAndBlackBleeder Says:

Being I was only two years old when the Raiders last won in ‘83, can anyone tell me what the post game celebration was like? I can only imagine if we were to win one now, that an official real riot would happen somewhere in Cali (probably both in Oakland and LA)!

  7. aig Says:

why do people want to destroy things during a celebration? One would think that you want to get a few beers and end up with a woman at the end of the nite rather than destroying things and end up being someone’s b in the city jail.

  8. SilverAndBlackBleeder Says:

yeah, boggles my mind too Aig. The funny thing was seeing Laker fans do it of all people. And they aren’t even that diehard as far as on the extreme end of showing emotion. In today’s age, a Raider celebration would probably result in a death or two from some of the knucklehead fans.

  10. JB Says:

Young’s suspension is a big plus for the Raiders in game one. Collins, the likely replacement, is not a run threat so we can focus on sacking him on a regular basis. Now, if Chris Johnson is still holding out, we should be able to log a win in Tennessee. Starting out the season 1-0 is a god thing.

Probably same thing but with a different wallet. When up in Napa, the BIG dinner usually ends up at Cole’s Chop House ($$$$). The dinner check will be a monster, easily 4 digits. Figure $2-$300 per person when all said & done.

Magic is a greater all around player than MJ. MJ dominated an era when the NBA was a water-down league with little to no competition. Magic went up against the Celtics, 76ers, and Pistons….all of which were much better teams with better players than the Sonics, Jazz, Suns or Blazers by far.

  36. JB Says:

Time for Cable to slap some sense into some of our players. I wonder if Henderson (DT) will have Cable get him started before each game. That would make for some great film. Of course, as soon as the commissioner sees it, Cable will probably be suspended for action unbecoming a NFL coach. LOL

JaMarcus Russell could be joining the UFL
Posted by Mike Florio on June 18, 2010 8:38 AM ET
Last month, Jason La Canfora of NFL Network reported that former Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell won’t be playing in the AFL or the CFL.

In the end, Russell could be landing in the UFL.

A source with knowledge of the situation tells us that the expansion Omaha Nighthawks could be signing Russell, who would team up with running back Ahman Green in the team’s backfield.

There’s still a long way to go before Russell would actually join the team, the internal discussions have begun, and they will continue.

He’d become the second former first-round NFL quarterback to join the five-team league for 2010. Recently, Daunte Culpepper agreed to terms with the Sacramento Mountain Lions.

Russell presumably is holding out hope for an NFL job. But he ultimately needs to ask himself whether it makes more sense to hold a clipboard on game days — or actually get live reps against guys who are good but not great football players.

Or maybe he just wants the steaks

    Kevin Mawae rips Albert Haynesworth
In case you haven’t heard enough people ripping Albert Haynesworth, let’s listen briefly to Kevin Mawae, who’s not only the NFL Players Association president but also was Haynesworth’s teammate in Tennessee from 2006 to 2008.

Mawae, currently a free agent, appeared on Sirius radio with Bryan McGovern and Gil Brandt Thursday night and didn’t hold back.

“You talk about someone putting a mask on and going in backwards to get his paycheck,” Mawae said. “I mean, if you don’t want to be there, don’t take the $21 million contract. How things turned out, it’s no surprise to guys that have played with him in Tennessee. You know, what do you say?

“I mean, you’re getting paid a ton of money to play less and you’re complaining about it,” he continued. “At the end of the day, it’s one thing to be a football player and get paid lots of money, but there’s a whole lot more to be said about being a man. You know, he’s a [inaudible] player when he wants to be and he can be one of the best in the league and I’ve said that to him in his face before. But to this point he doesn’t want to do it on a consistent basis.”

“At some point in time in the game, you know, you got to do what’s right for yourself and what’s right for you and your family. I think $32 million guaranteed in one year pretty much takes care of those issues. I think the other issues go beyond the football field.”

Dogg: I am a Celtic fan from Ma, and I have to say there were games I would blame the officals and last night wasn’t one of them. It pains me to say it but it’s the truth. 90% of the fouls were legit. One major foul missed at a crucial time was when Gasol travled and it wasn’t called. Dakota you’ve obviously forgotten when MJ torched Bird and the Celtics in the playoffs for 63 points, which prompted Larry Bird to refer to Michael as “God in basketball shoes.”

The comment I referenced in my post #82 was made by Dakota of course.

  86. Just Fire Baby Says:

I thought the officials were on point until about the last 4 minutes of the game.

The Pau shot was a travel, or at worst a jumpball. His feet were clearly on the ground prior to the shot.

Than there was two 50/50 charge/block calls I thought that both went the Lakers way. The Kobe one that was ‘Sheeds’ 6th foul, and the block on PP by Gasol when he was hurrying it over the halfcourt line to avoid an 8 second call.

Either way, Celtics get a couple more boards and make a couple more shots and it doesn’t matter. Plus, that’s what home-court is for, you are going to get those calls at home.

  87. jwiggle Says:

    Haynesworth getting released ????

    I can’t see that happening.

As for looking him looking for a payday, he was a free agent who was the best DT on the market. A LOT of teams wanted him, including Tenn. Washington set a record for $ paid when they signed him. That’s not his fault, is it?

MJ dominated an era when the NBA was a water-down league with little to no competition. Magic went up against the Celtics, 76ers, and Pistons….all of which were much better teams with better players than the Sonics, Jazz, Suns or Blazers by far.
    _________________________________________________________

Dakota you’ve obviously forgotten when MJ torched Bird and the Celtics in the playoffs for 63 points, which prompted Larry Bird to refer to Michael as “God in basketball shoes.”

MJ is a Bentley Continental GT. Kobe is a Chrysler 300E. From a distance they look similar, but when you look closely, they’re not even close to being the same. Dakota you should know better.

I thought the officials were on point until about the last 4 minutes of the game.

The Pau shot was a travel, or at worst a jumpball. His feet were clearly on the ground prior to the shot. (might have a point there, but just moments later the Refs made it up by not calling the clear Rondo travel)

Than there was two 50/50 charge/block calls I thought that both went the Lakers way. The Kobe one that was ‘Sheeds’ 6th foul, (Yeah right, I have heard that sometimes the hand is part of the ball, but I have never heard that the forearm is part of the ball, he CLEARLY hacked Kobe’s forearm)and the block on PP by Gasol when he was hurrying it over the halfcourt line to avoid an 8 second call (PP was clearly not set….that means it is a blocking foul).

  98. Just Fire Baby Says:

    Dakota,

The point being, they were all very close calls, and they ALL went in favor of the Lakers.

But I do say, you win the most games in the regular season, you should get something, and the prize is game 7 at home, with the well-known bias that NBA refs always have for the home team.

  99. jwiggle Says:

Bottom line is the Cs lost because Garnett and Wallace were gassed about halfway through the 3rd qtr. That is why they were fouling so much to end the game. You could clearly see them sucking eggs. Surprised Garnett didn’t throw up on the court.

Agreed 100 percent. Fat Albert probably could have signed with a number of teams for big money

if that team didn’t switch to a 3-4 defense, there wouldn’t be an issue right now …

a switch from 4-3 to 3-4 or vice versa can ruin a players career, or at least season. Remember what Sapp looked like as a 3-4 DE? a huge waste of money. If we stayed with the 3-4 defense we would have ended up cutting him imo or watching him struggle game in & game out

Albert wants to be a Pro Bowler. a dominant force inside and difference maker. who can blame him? thats what Snyder promised him (so we’re told) 1 year into it a new system is put into place and he’s asked to do somethign he’s never done before and theres a chance that could make him look like a bad player on the field and show up in his next contract (if there is one)

rather get a bad wrap as a selfish player than stink it up on the field imo. look at Brandon Marshall

First your dominate argument….um, most people equate dominating with winning lol. By scoring 63 in a game and losing Jordan only dominated the box score.

Secondly, why are you arguing Kobe and MJ with me, I already said I think MJ is a better player than Kobe.

Thirdly, Magic did benefit from a good Jabbar early on, but by the mid 80s Jabbar was not a dominating presence, while MJ had a top 50 player in his prime in Pippen the entire time he played in the 1990s. Magic going to 9 finals and winning 5 against the competition he faced is so much more impressive than MJ dominating Shawn Kemp and Clyde Drexler, and the one trick pony Utah Jazz. Magic took down Dr J in his prime, Isaiah Thomas in his prime, Larry Bird and the rest of the Celtics….not even close.

  123. Just Fire Baby Says:

    J,

Jordan won NBA defensive player of the year, Kobe never has, and Jordan was never torched in the finals like Kobe was by PP in 2008.

And I don’t see Kobe playing 75+ games a year ever again. The miles are adding up, and since he came out from HS, he will start his decline at a younger age than Jordan did.

And he hasn’t scored 28 points a game in 3 years, and only 5 of his 14 years in the league. You think he will just start it up again? Not likely.

  124. jwiggle Says:

Mike shot a higher percentage because he was more atheltic and physical = more layups and shots closer to the rim.

I hated Jordan when he was playing. Loved the highlights, but couldn’t stand the ball hogging. Same things a lot of people say about Kobe now, and I agree. If Kobe didn’t play for the Lakers, I probably wouldn’t have much positive to say about the guy. I don’t like how he’s clearly trying to be Jordan, or the man instead of letting it all come to him.

But I’m glad he’s on our team, lol!

  125. inonewordraider Says:

Kobe guards fast point guards (rondo) and big 3’s (lebron), Jordan couldn’t do that he also has a better long range game however Jordan had a better post game and was a better finisher at the basket and I can’t imagine Jordan ever having such a horrific game 7 for all the marbles

  126. Just Fire Baby Says:

Kobe has been in the top 10 in turnovers in the league 7 times, Jordan only twice.

Kobe already has more turnovers than Jordan and has played in less games.

I don’t see one area where Kobe has a statistical advantage over Jordan.

And the rings thing? Jordan tossed away at least one more by going to go wiff at changeups.

  127. ottocrat Says:

How much did he get per effective double team he drew allowing someone else to make a play?

Jwiggle your facts are way skewed.

Kobe went through a Kendrick Perkins-less Celtics team and got pushed to the brink in a game 7.

Jordan dominated an era of Big Men who make today’s big men look pathetic.

Dave Robinson, Patrick Ewing, Hekeem Olajuwon, Shaq. You forget the year the Bulls went 72-10. That means Jordan dominated the league with all of those dominant centers in the league, including Shaq in his prime. And not one of them could stop him.

You have to win playoff series to get to the Finals, and Michael obviously went through teams with much better big men than Kendrick Perkins to get his 6 championship rings.

Some of the comments that some of you make in here prove that you just started watching basketball last week.

  130. SilverAndBlackBleeder Says:

Thats because Jordan never let any Finals games go to game 7. Let Jordan play in the post handcheck era, and his numbers would have been even more ridiculous. Kobe has earned his way into the conversation (obviously, since everyone is talking about this right now), but he’s still 2nd on the totem pole.

Kobe’s fake personality is sickening too. Last night was the first time the guy was honest with himself his whole career. He’s always tried hard to be liked instead of just being himself. Saying he “had one more than Shaq, and that you can take that to the bank” is the true Kobe. He is a vengeful, me first, well skilled basketball assassin. I wish he was this entertaining his whole career with quotes like that instead of faking the funk for 14 years. He always acted like his only motivation is winning, but just like Mike, he’s motivated by a lot of petty stuff and just wants to shut people up. But he never coordinated himself that way, and was a baby about it. Now, maybe we’ll get to see last night’s Kobe more. I think he’s like “F it, I’m about to retire in 4 or 5 years, so I might as well start being me”.

In all fairness Jordan never had to face a zone defense. Teams would have crowded Jordan’s side with defenders and cut off the lane forcing him to shoot way more from the outside than he ever had to against man defenses…Jordan would still have gotten the job done somehow, but his shooting percentages would have been affected.

Also, the degree of difficulty Kobe often has on his shots brings hios shooting percentage down, but Kobe made shots that Jordan couldn’t dream of making. That being said, I still take Jordan over Kobe, but not by as much as the Jordan sycophants would like.

If my team is down by 5 with one minute left I and most GMs would pick Kobe over Jordan in a heartbeat…but overall Jordan was better. Take away Kobe’s baggage and that might be a different story, but you can’t discount the Colorado issue, the trade demands (though it spurred the Lakers to pick up Pau) and the spat with Shaq.

  132. jwiggle Says:

    JFB,

Kobe avg 27 pts a game this year with a broken finger and a bum knee. Like he said last night, he’s not slowing down, he was injured. I think he will avg more than 27 the next 2 years while playing healthy, and at least 25 the next 7 years. AT LEAST! Ball hog that he is?

2009 season avg of 27 pts a game was when he initally hurt that shooting hand and played with the injury.

Jordans the best I’ve seen, Magic is better than Kobe because he coulda played that game last night and been more effective being used to those wars but people should recognize his greatness

  140. SilverAndBlackBleeder Says:

People always say zone defense, but it really isn’t zone defense if you can’t stay in the paint for longer than 3 seconds without being near your man because of a defensive three. Mike would have still dominated. Whereas, the ability to handcheck while guarding totally changes the physicality of the game. That’s why today’s point guards who are athletically supreme just thrive and thrive. No one can stay in front of ‘em without being allowed to put a hand on ‘em.

Also, Kobe has been making difficult shots his whole career. I’ll give him that. But he takes difficult shots way too often too. Like the one he took last night on the baseline when he hit the side of the backboard after Paul came to double team him with Ray already on him. Mike isn’t even going to take a lot of those shots. Most of Mike’s shots were good shots because he created good space for his shots and still played within the offense. His shots hardly seemed outside of the flow of the game, whereas when it’s Kobe time, everyone knows it.

Don’t get me wrong; Kobe is the man, but his teams have been filled with either multiple all stars or allstars and fellow Olympians. All Mike had was an overrated Scottie Pippen and bunch of decent role players (no legit big man – Horace Grant was a good 4 at best, but not great).

  141. jwiggle Says:

And next, no,Jordan didn’t play against Shaq, Olajuwon, or Robinson in the playoffs, but in order to get to the playoffs you have to win your regular season games first. Lebron had never won a championship, but it is clear that during the regular season he was the most individually dominant player in the league.

Basketball is a TEAM sport, so when these debates come up, one must separate a players individual performance, from their TEAM accomplishments. Are we debating the Chicago Bulls vs the LA Lakers, or Michael Jordan vs various players in the league?

Pistol Pete was individually one of the top 5 greatest offensive players EVER in the league, but he wasn’t a champion.

So yes the Bulls lost the series to the Celtics, but that wasn’t the debate. Michael Jordan, as an individual player, DOMINATED Bird and the Celtics. They could not stop him and even reduced Bird to referring to him as “God.”

But you argument about Jordan not having as much talent is rediculous. Jordan never had a Shaq, but he did have Pippen, Kucrotch, Grant, Harper, Rodman, and a cast of sharp shooters that Kobe only had once in Glenn Rice…if the teams Jordan played with had no talent why did they go to Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals without him the year after he retired?

    Jwiggle,

    Please demonstrate some logic.

No,Jordan didn’t play against Shaq, Olajuwon, or Robinson in the playoffs, but in order to get to the playoffs you have to win your regular season games first. And judging by the Bulls 72-10 record in 95-96 I think it’s safe to say that Jordan played against and dominated every single big man in the league that year, while he had Luc Longley, and Bill Wennington as his center. Case closed.

  154. Dakota Says:

The 72-10 season was a joke…the NBA just expanded with the Grizz and the Raptors…which meant even less competition for Jordan to deal with. The central division was a complete joke that year.

Jordan didn’t dominate the NBA until the NBA added 6 expansion teams robbing 42 or so decent players from the rosters of the rest of the NBA and he also had to wait until Magic, Bird and Thomas were at the end of their careers to get his first ring. Magic had to deal with the Sixers, Celtics, Pistons and others great teams while Jordan filled an era with a talent black hole.

And back to the 72-10 Bulls, we all know the 2001 Lakers would have destroyed that Bulls team and any other Bulls team…Phil Jackson even said as much last night.

  155. Dakota Says:

    Gotta run….GOOO LAKERS!

Back to the Raiders next week…well, maybe not since NBA free agency is around the corner….

  156. SilverAndBlackBleeder Says:

Kukoc, Grant, Harper, and all those sharp shooters were all interchangeable pieces on the roster. Yea, they balled and played their role, but whether it’s Craig Hodges, Armstrong, Kerr, or Paxson, all those players were just guards who could hit an open shot and could be replaced. Grant was nothing more than Udonis Haslem. A big man with a lot of heart who wasn’t afraid of the moment, who could grab a ton of boards. Kukoc was nice, but he’ll never be a hall of famer, neither will anyone other than Pippen and Rodman (whom Mike didn’t get the benefit of in his glory years). Mike made all of them look good though. In fact, made all of them better.

Kobe has had tons of folks come thru there. Being he’s an A-type personality mixed with a little bit of the d!ckhe@d syndrome, he’s run off every other A-type personality, until he surrounded himself with legit B-type personality players. Everyone on this roster kisses up to Kobe and is scared to even tell him anything other than Fisher. The fact that he has to be the only A-type dude on the roster is already a detriment, but the fact he ran all the vets and other A’s outta there shows even more. From Payton to Fox to Malone to Shaq to Van Exel to Ariza to Horry to whoever…..No one wanted to play with that kid for real, and I’m sure they all can’t stand him off the court. Kobe has had a huge list of great players to get the job done. Heck, he didn’t even want Bynum there (wanted him shipped out for J. Kidd) and is lucky that he stayed. If it wasn’t for Jerry West trying to hook up his old team by “influencing” Memphis to part with Gasol, Kobe would have never gotten his fourth. He’d still be pouting and going attempt-less like the 2nd half in game 7 against the Suns when he wanted to prove a point and they got blown by 30. Kobe has always had a crew. The times he didn’t is because he ran everyone away. And the only person Kobe truly made better that I’ll give him credit for is Pau Gasol, because he showed him how to be tough and win when it matters.

  162. SilverAndBlackBleeder Says:

    C’mon JWigg,

We both know Fox had a couple more left in him, and the reasons all the others left were because they didn’t want to be there so you ask to be traded or let go (or Kobe asks for you to be traded or let go – more likely).

Mike would have never pouted in a big game 7 like Kobe did in 2006 when he gave up on his team to prove a point to the media that his teammates aren’t that good and this is why he doesn’t pass the ball more. That game was close at half and the Lakes wound up getting busted by 30, and Kobe showed his true colors and pretty much started the crying right then and there until it landed him Pau Gasol.

  163. SilverAndBlackBleeder Says:

I’m not arguing that a championship team has lacked a crew, but I bring that up because Mike never had multiple all stars at the same time (call Kukoc and late career Rodman all stars if you want), but all Mike had was Pippen (who I still believe was overrated). Kobe has another Olympian on his team, and Artest and Odom. Thats 4 all stars at one point in time on the same squad. Should have never went to game 7.

Anyhow, I just like playing Devil’s advocate. Kobe is the man. I just hate the effin’ Lakers! Growing up in Louisville KY, my only true Cali allegiance is to the Raiders. Now that I live out here though, I do enjoy watching all the LA teams play. Good debating with ya’ll JWigg and Dakota. It’s quitting time though. Hopefully, we can talk Raiders next time around.

You and Dakota both jump around the topics when it suits you and avoid the ones that disprove you. You made an erroneous comment that MJ didnt have to play against top centers to win his championship. I brought up the 72-10 season as ONE example because clearly you dont have that record over the course of a season without playing and defeating the other good teams in the league.

So then you weasel your way back in here with stats from two games against Shaq. But you didn’t mention Olajuwon(who embarrassed Shaq the year before by the way, Robinson, or any other Centers who were way more dominant than any Center on the Celtics roster who the great Kobe defeated to win his titles.

You’re a switch hitter who plays both sides of the fence when it’s convenient for you to prove your silly little, groundless comments.

I suggest the ancient Mayan ballcourt game as a better test of manliness than either of the aforementioned “men in shorts” contests, as the victor, the man capable of getting the ball through the ring mounted on the wall of the ballcourt was then deemed the most worthy and was put to death as a sacrifice to the gods.

Nikolai Bonds entered the plea Thursday as part of a deal with San Mateo County prosecutors. Three additional misdemeanor charges were dropped.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe says Bonds was sentenced to four days in jail but given credit for time served.
Authorities say Bonds threw a doorknob at his mother, Sun Bonds, spit in her face and stopped her from leaving through the front door of her Menlo Park home on Dec. 5 after she suggested his friends may have taken jewelry.

Republican Joe Barton (R-TX) apologized to BP CEO Tony Hayward for being strong-armed into putting 20 billion dollars in an esrow account he called a ‘slush fund’ to help compensate victims of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

Barton’s remarks came in the opening statements of Thursdays hearings by the House Energy Committee. He said, “I am ashamed of what happened in the White House yesterday” because a ‘private corporation was subjected to what amounts to a 20 billion dollar shake down.”

Yet Barton is not alone in his open-mouth support of oil giant BP. Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (R-MN) inferred that the oil spill victims escrow account was yet another Obama socialist plot.

Bachmann called the escrow account a “redistribution of wealth fund,” according to TPM.

Barton was quickly reprimanded by House Minority leader John Boehner (R-OH), under threat of being removed from his committee position. Barton’s public apology soon followed with the hope that his remarks would not be ‘misconstrued.’

I know some in here get mad at the non-football talk at times in here, but seriously, debating the D-line rotation for 4 weeks straight might get a tad stale.

Jerry needs comments to pay the bills and keep getting big names like McDonalds, Levi’s and others to advertise.

    So…….soccer it is!!!

  231. Plunketthead Says:

This is my third WC and I enjoy the heck out of them, however yesterdays game took some wind out of my sails.

A little too blatent for me, proof that USA will get hosed harder and faster, the closer they get to the finals, which means they wont get close to the final 4

    Best Offensive Lines in football:

    32. Oakland Raiders: Wow, this is bad. Mario Henderson and Cornell Green shouldn’t be the answers to: “Name the Raiders starting offensive tackles from 2009.” Yikes. It doesn’t get much better in the middle and the sad part is that the Raiders didn’t do much to upgrade the personnel this offseason. Say a prayer for Jason Campbell. He’s going to need it.

i have no beef with Tiger the others however do belong on that list, can’t hate a guy for having a crazy wife!
