Seymour signs tender

The Raiders announced on their Twitter account that defensive end Richard Seymour had signed his exclusive franchise tender, meaning all free agents are present and accounted for and should be to camp on time.

Next up for the Raiders is the process of getting rookies signed and into camp, something they’ve done extremely well with the lone exception of the JaMarcus Russell hold out. Last year’s top pick Darrius Heyward-Bey, missed just one practice while his agents were tying up loose ends.

In a year where restricted and unrestricted free agents aren’t signing tenders in the wake of an uncapped year and an ensuing collective bargaining agreement, the Raiders got all their RFAs in for offseason workouts and now will have Seymour in tow for Napa.

Seymour will make nearly $12.398 million on his tender but can still negotiate a long-term deal.

    Good news!

Hopefully none of the draft picks are represented by any agents, who will try to make a name for themselves by trying to play hardball with uncle Al..

What is going on Raider Nation.

Good news on Richard. Now, let’s work out a fair contract extension.

Try as I might I just can’t get into this World Cup thing. I like to watch the olympics when they come around and get caught up in the wave of patriotism and such.

I guess I still have the opinion, outdated as it may be, that soccer is just a sport for little boys whose mommies won’t let them play football, because they’re afraid they might get hurt. I can’t help it.

By far the best Raider offseason in years. We still need a veteran WR but from Al’s press release I doubt we’ll see anything at this point since DHB’s last two non-contact practices clearly has him on track for the HOF.

Thousands of rubber ducks to land on British shores after 15 year journeyBy BEN CLERKIN
    Last updated at 22:00 27 June 2007

They were toys destined only to bob up and down in nothing bigger than a child’s bath – but so far they have floated halfway around the world.

The armada of 29,000 plastic yellow ducks, blue turtles and green frogs broke free from a cargo ship 15 years ago.
Since then they have travelled 17,000 miles, floating over the site where the Titanic sank, landing in Hawaii and even spending years frozen in an Arctic ice pack.
And now they are heading straight for Britain. At some point this summer they are expected to be spotted on beaches in South-West England.
While the ducks are undoubtedly a loss to the bath-time fun of thousands of children, their adventures at sea have proved an innvaluable aid to science.

I know this is from the last post by Jerry, but here’s why it NOT ok to sign Mawae…

He’s never been a ZBS center. Why sign a guy for one year so he can spend half the season learning the blocking assignments and line calls, just to cut him in training camp (or before) the following year? He also has missed training camp, so will be behind learning Hue’s offense.

One of our main problems at the center position is that the guys we have are too small and not strong enough to handle the big NTs in our division. Mawae is basically the same size as Satele and Morris. No upgrade there.

It’s a waste of a roster spot, and either Morris or Satele would have to go. Morris is a reasonably good backup that can also play guard, and Satele already knows the line calls and has minicamps and OTAs under his belt with Jackson’s offense.

Don’t get me wrong; we need a center. Mawae just isn’t the one.

  • Fear_the_eyepatch

I’m so pumped for this season. I’m pumped for every season but this year just feels like we are ready to truly compete again. RRRRAAAAAIIIIIIDDDDEEEERRRRSSSS!!!

Manute Bol, who became a basketball sensation in the 1980s as a skeletally thin shot-blocking giant with the Washington Bullets and other professional teams, and who devoted his post-basketball life to improving the lot of his fellow natives of Sudan, died June 19 at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. He was 47.

  • Nnamdi21

Good enough. Lets see if he gets more than 4 sacks this year. Bet he does.

Signing this tender gives the man incentives to play for a long term or shop himslef for another team next year. Nice move Al!

  • Nnamdi21

    18. MANUTE!!!

    RIP…

  • Nnamdi21

    16. I tend to concur, but Mawze DOES have like 17 years experence. I’m sure he could figure out blocking asignments. Satele’s had like 3 yrs in the ZBS and still doesn’t get it.

Satele’s all too often got his back turned to the LOS and it gets our QB killed on delayed stunts.

Morris is under powered but CLEARLY played better that Satele at center.

    At guard Morris got creamed.

Mawae may not be the answer but he could be better than what we’ve got…

  • Fear_the_eyepatch

R.I.P Manute Bol. Imagine if that guy had put some weight on his frame. Would have been unstoppable.

    Nnamdi21,

We traded a 1st round pick for Richard Seymour. I sincerely hope he’s going to be an elite talent for the next 4 to 5 years.

What a waste if it turns out last year was the best we could get for a 1st rd pick.

Especially given that the draft picks now have value given how Al Davis is listening to people in the room before making these picks.

  • Kirk

Seymour is overrated and now overpaid. We should have kept the draft pick.

I hope we let him go after this year.

  • Just Fire Baby

Manute is nailing three pointers in the pearly gates as we speak.

  • Just Fire Baby

Four sacks and a stud in stopping the run??

That would be like our best first round pick since Nnamdi!!!

  • Just Fire Baby

Saints trade former Pro Bowl LT Jamal Brown for a mid-round pick.

For you big O-line buffs, this guy was a Pro Bowler, who got hurt last year and was replaced by a 6th round pick rookie from D-II, and they won the Super Bowl.

LT = most overrated position in football. Not because it isn’t important, but because team after team draft these guys in the top 5 and pay them more than some teams pay their QB.

Last year the Saints started the rookie at LT, and the Colts started a converted TE at LT. Both went to the Super Bowl.

  • Glutten for Punishment

if he signs a long term deal i hope its only a 3 year deal. not a Sapp type deal…..

  • Nnamdi21

I hop[e Seymour DOES take Houston under his wing. Both “under sized” DT’s can benefit.

Houston can help with rotation and Seymour can teach the kid hand placement and hand fighting that makes him one of the best DE’s in the game at standing ground and shedding blocks.

You may be onto something. I’m sure Marcus McNeil of the Chargers would disagree with you but even he was a 2nd rounder.

Word is he’ll probably strike a deal with SD before the season.

Probably not for Wr Vincent Jackson.

Pretty steep price I admit, but we’ve done well with later round picks recently and NOT with our 1st rounders unfortunately.

I like the veteran savvy Seymour brings and attitude. Hope he has a pro bowl year.

I’m sure he does too so he can leverage for a long term after the strike…

I rarely belittle anyone on this blog but this post was IDIOTIC!The trade has been completed. The player is now with the S&B. What would possess you to hope we now let him go? IDIOT!

Seymour will prove, IMO, to be one of the finest defensive players ever for the S&B. And, I go back to 1965. I’ve seen most if not all. Seymour’s acquisition was one of he better things AD has done in a very long time.

  • DudleyHeywardBey

D starting to look good to bad the Offense still has no proven no 1 Wr or No 1. Rb but hey I’m sure with no Russel the Offense will just explode.

You suppose that we gave such high tenders to guys like Routt b/c Al wanted to make them happy signing their tenders and let them go about their offseason. Whereas some other teams rfa’s don’t want to sign their tenders b/c that will make them underpaid.

  • JB

    Midwest fan

AD has almost always overpaid his players. He’s known as a players coach. He’s NOT a coaches coach though. Coaches are usually underpaid, especially due to all the BS they must have to put up with.

Your view of he situation probably has a lot of validity. Besides, lest us not forget, it’s NOT AD’s money that’s being spent. It’s the investors money. AD Football INC. is a contracted entity that gets paid for running the team and NOT paying for it.

  • buckeyeraider

I know I’m biased, but I think you’d be hard pressed to think of another team that’s had a better offseason than the Raiders. We’ll see how it translates in the fall in terms of wins and losses. The Raiders have to be one of the most improved teams in the league.
That is with everything taken into account, an outstanding draft, some nice free agent signings, and maybe the biggest difference maker..the hiring of Hue Jackson as OC.

I can’t even think of a close second. The Jets made some big moves and brought in some big names. But they have some serious unrest on that roster with contract situations.

Washington brought in McNabb as a veteran upgrade to Campbell, but the Fat Albert situation is ripping that team apart.

I know I’m preaching to the choir here, but can anybody think of a team that’s improved themselves more, at least on paper?
    Nobody,IMO.

  • JB

    buckeyeraider

    Couldn’t agree more.

  • buckeyeraider

Hell, in my last post I didn’t even mention Jerry and everybody else raving about how DHB looks light years ahead of where he was at this point last year. Or a big one…the addition by subtraction of the Jamarcus Lethargy addiction distraction, if you will.

Totally different vibe around this years team.

  • buckeyeraider

Try saying that last part three times in a row…
Peter Piper picked a peck of…lol.

  • Midwest Fan

I’m guardedly optimistic about our O-line. If that improves I think that will be the difference in the season.

I also like that Hue is challenging Nnamdi. That is when he was here. Why not have your offense go after your best defensive players. Makes everyone better.

I’m thinking Seymour signs a 4yr deal around the bye week.

  • JB

Let’s see now: Shaughnessy, Kelly/Henderson, Seymour, Houston, Scott, McClain, Wimbley, Asomugha, CJ, Branch/Mitchell, Huff. On paper at least, that’s going to be a bad ass D unit. Minimally a top 10 defense. Realistically, I expect to see a top 5 defense.

  • JB

The O-line is still a work in progress. We need a center badly. The RG & RT position needs to be solidified. I expect that we might end up with Bruce Campbell @ guard and Veldheer at Tackle. I believe Walker & Barnes will be the main Guard/Tackle back-ups with Satele & Morris as the center and guard back-ups.

Bruce Campbell reminds me, physically, of a young Gene Upshaw. I believe he could make that guard position special especially with lead blocking around the right edge. He’s got the speed to make it happen. We are not that far away on the O-line if 1.) Super Mario can continue to develop and become an above average LT and 2.) Robert Gallery can stay healthy. Lastly, we need another Barrett Robbins to takeover at center. IMO, our WR & TE’s are fine for now and will get a lot better over time. Bush & DMac need to make a statement this year. I also think JCampbell will flourish with the Raiders. He could end up being our next Gannon. He’s got the tools and apparently the desire & work ethic to make it happen.

It all began with the dumping of the giant turd. It’s been all positive since then.

  • buckeyeraider

    Midwest,
I agree with you about the O-line. That is where the key to success for this season lies. If the line gels and performs capably this year, the Raiders could really surprise some people. If the line falters, this team might once again struggle to reach mediocrity.

Like you, I’m cautiously optimistic. I hope Satele’s shoulder has healed, and he’s added some strength. I hope he shocks some people this year. And I think some fans might be sleeping on Bruce Campbell too. He might be a year away or so, but I can’t wait to see how this kid looks in preseason.

  • Raiders4eve

I hope we start signing Bruce Campbell, Veldheer, Mcfadden, etc basically our third to seventh picks right away, we should get everyone in by training camp.

  • JB

    Here’s my best guess:

At Tenn – Win (No Young or Johnson)
    St. Louis Rams – Win
    At Arizona Cardinals – Win
    Houston Texans – Loss
    San Diego Chargers – Win
    At SF 49ers – Win
At Denver Broncos – Loss (tough place for us)
    Seattle Seahawks – Win
    KC Chiefs – Win
    BYE WEEK
At Pittsburg Steelers – Win (We beat them last year and can do it again)
Miami Dolphins – Loss (Mia just does well against us)
At San Diego Chargers – Loss
    At Jacksonville Jaguars – Win
    Denver Broncos – Loss
Indianapolis Colts – Win (Colts resting stars)
    At KC Chiefs Win

    Result: 11-5 AFC-W Champion

  • Nnamdi21
  • buckeyeraider

    JB,
I’ll take your final results…11-5 and AFC West cahmps, anyday. But, there’s no way in hell this team gets swept by the Broncos. I think lil prodigy Joshy McDaniels is about to crash and burn.

BTW, Mile High used to be a nightmare, but surprisingly, as of late the Raiders have had a lot of success in Denver. Winning 3 of the last 4 there, I believe. And their one loss was the BS with Shannarat calling the TO as Jano’s game winner sailed through.

I think you might switch one Denver L with SF or Pitt.
Just quibbling I guess. It’s all just speculation and fun and games at this point.
    Like I said I’ll take 11-5 anyday.

  • MistaBrown

Maybe we can get more than 3 good games from Seymour this year.
