Raiders sign third-, fourth-round selections Veldheer, Campbell

Almost half of the more than 250 players selected in the 2010 NFL draft in April are under contract. Yet, until Friday none of the Raiders nine draftees had signed.

That changed when the Raiders signed offensive linemen Jared Veldheer and Bruce Campbell to long-term contracts. The Raiders still have plenty of work to do in this area, given training camp begins in less than three weeks.

Not to worry, though. The Raiders have a long history of getting all of their draft picks signed in time for the start of training camp. The notable exception, of course, was former quarterback JaMarcus Russell missing all of training camp in 2007, as well as the first week of the regular season, while his agent and the Raiders haggled over a contract.

Veldheer was the third player selected by the Raiders, Campbell the fourth. Linebacker Rolando McClain (first round) and defensive end Lamarr Houston (2nd) are the only players selected higher who are unsigned.

McClain has said more than once that he doesn’t expect much difficulty in reaching agreement on a contract with the Raiders and that he intends to be on the field in Napa for the first practice.

The other draftees who have yet to sign are wide receiver Jacoby Ford (fourth-rounder), cornerback Walter McFadden (5th), linebacker Travis Goethel (6th), and defensive backs Jeremy Ware (7th) and Stevie Brown (7th).

None of those mid- to low-rounders are expected to pose a problem getting under contract, and deals should be consummated long before camp starts.

The Raiders have high hopes for Veldheer and Campbell. Both played offensive tackle in college, Veldheer at Hillsdale (Mich.) College and Campbell at Maryland. Campbell has moved to guard for now so that he can get more reps and become more versatile, according to coach Tom Cable.

The Raiders are hopeful that Veldheer and Campbell mature into starters before long and serve as the anchors for the offensive line for years to come. It’s conceivable that one or both will be in the starting lineup at some point this season, if not for the regular-season opener against the Tennessee Titans.

I am very concerned about that, If Campbell isn’t an immediate success these guy’s wont be patient at all with him because of what they’ve been through. That’s why I asked the question in the first place. These guy’s are so sure that NOW we’re going to the playoffs since Russell’s gone and if they don’t see marked improve they will overreact as always and start scrambling for the backup. And we’ll be back to square one.
I understand what you are saying but the bar is set so low now, thank you to JaBustus, that almost anyone breathing would be an upgrade to what we’ve had to endure this last 3 years. Jason Campbel wasn’t my first choice but now that he’s here he deserves our total support. In some senses, he reminds me of Rich Gannon when he first arrived. Campbell has the tools to become Gannon like successful. Mobility, desire, ability, leadership & accuracy can go a long way. Match that up with a much improved defense and things are immediately looking up.

Looking at our conference, I see no reason, including the Chargers, why we can’t take the conference this year. I’m predicting 10-6 this year barring any key injuries. I truly believe we are going to be surprising a lot of teams out there. John Marshall will shine this year and Hue Jackson will make us all believers once again. Keep a good though. Let’s just hope JCampbell is our new Gannon. If he is, just look out!

One huge difference Gannon already taken a team to the playoffs when he got them in they gave the job back to Grbsack. He lost the 1st game and Gannon left and we signed him.

That’s head and shoulders over what Campbell has done. Nt to say it’s his fault but Gannon won 6 straight games for KC that year. He came right in and took over here I’m not sure as Seymour Bush said he has that kind of command. So we’ll see…

Camps are getting ready to open! Hopefully the Raiders can get thru the preseason without any major injuries.

The question is, is Tennessee the same Tennessee team that went 13-3 and was the number one seed in the AFC just two years ago?

Bo Jackson is back this week for the MLB All-Star game in Anaheim. Jackson, the former two-sport star who became an All-Star in both the NFL and MLB, is marking the 21-year anniversary of the leadoff home run he hit in the 1989 All-Star game in Anaheim.

A candid Jackson told the L.A. Times that his exit from football due to a dislocated hip injury suffered in a 1994 playoff game preceded his planned retirement. He and his wife had planned four days prior to the injury that Jackson would retire from the then-Los Angeles Raiders after that season to focus on his baseball career and on raising their family.

And Jackson also defended Raiders owner Al Davis, who he said is miscast in too negative a light today. He told the Times of Davis:

“Everybody stands up and says, ‘Al Davis, that crazy SOB.’ That isn’t so. This is a man who would have fought a lion with a switch to defend his players.

“This is my opinion, and my opinion only, but the reason the Raiders left Los Angeles was because of the condition of our place of work. The public just got to see the outside of the stadium, which is beautiful. But after a game we had to stand in line to take a shower. There were 20 or 25 shower heads — and only four of them had a steady stream of water coming out of them.

“When you have conditions like that, you’ve got to go to greener pastures. That’s what Mr. Davis did.

“Mr. Davis tells you exactly what he thinks. That’s what I like about him.

“From the time I left the Raiders he called my wife and I every Christmas, and he called my wife on her birthday and sent her flowers. That is the type of man Al Davis is. He will always remain one of the most distinguished men I’ve ever had the opportunity to shake hands with.”

  • Raider Dell

    Thanks. Hope all is well.

  • Wow. Another former player sticks up for Al. Big shock there. And Bo even admits why he’s sticking up for him. Because Al gives the players whatever they want. Only difference is, back in Bo’s day most players wanted to win. Today, players just want an easy check and easy practices, and Al continues to deliver.

  • Just the facts.

In 1989 he was selected to the MLB all-star game (where he won the MVP award) AND the NFL Pro Bowl.

    Career YPC Average:

    Bo Jackson 5.4

    Jim Brown 5.2

    Barry Sanders 5.0

    Walter Payton 4.4

    Emmitt Smith 4.2

  • LOL @ the clowns who only want to believe former players who rag on the Raiders. Then all of a sudden they have complete credibility. Hmmm, do I trust Bo Jackson or Warren Sapp?

  • Don’t talk about Bo being a big two sport star, because then someone’s going to bring up Deion, his concurrent success in both sports, along with the rings Deion delivered (that Bo never did), and you’re going to get mad.

  • Bo, let’s put it this way, I believe both lots of players, the ones who bash Al and the ones who praise him.

Bo says Al sticks up for players. True.

Warren says Al tinkers with the game plan. True.

    No contradiction.

Warren Sapp was one of the last mohicans who wanted to win. He came from winners. Played for winners his whole life. Then he’s in Oakland and he wonders why his team has so much talent yet can’t win. He learned why, and told the public.

  • Seymour Bush

Yeah no former Raider players ever want to come back. Just ask jim Plunkett and Tim Brown.

On a different note, notice how the SF Whiners have to pay some of their players to come back even for scheduled reunions. Joe Montana’s so pissed at the whiners he normally will not show up unless the Whiners pay him.

  • RNOraiderFan

Anyone what the reair of the BSC championship on ESPN yesterday? I did and I got a good look at the Raiders first and second round picks. After watching the game I came away less then impressed.

  • Seymour, I’m sorry, but did ANYONE dispute former players’ liking Al Davis? I know I didn’t. Former players like him because he gave them whatever they wanted. But a lot of former players were also frustrated with the chaos in the organization, which affected the football play. And as far as they were concerned, Al could keep his perks and his phone calls and his flowers. They wanted to win. Gannon and Sapp were two of them.

  • Rich Gannon was a league MVP. Why shouldn’t I take his word just as much as I take Bo’s?

  • Seymour Bush

So we’re all in agreement then.
