Al on George Steinbrenner

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, July 14th, 2010 at 4:58 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders released the following statement from Al Davis regarding the passing of Yankees owner George Steinbrenner:

“He was a friend and a warrior. We not only shared a birthday, but also an unyielding will to win and an unparalleled commitment to excellence.

“I judge sports figures based on individual achievement, team achievement and contributions to the game,” Davis said. “George was right up there with me at No. 1 — bright, aggressive and, most of all, not afraid.

“When the Yankees were going through the lean times in the ’80s and after we beat the Redskins in the Super Bowl in Tampa, George and I would talk and I would pep him up,” Davis said. “Later on, he did the same for me when Tampa beat us in the Super Bowl.”

Nnamdi would be considered the best CB in the league, if he was allowed to play the other team’s best WR like Revis. Nnamdi stays on one side of the field, and he shuts it down.

  13. Ataxia Says:

nnamdi doesnt get help from safeties the way revis does

  14. Raider O Says:

I hope Al Davis lives for another 50 years!

Ha! Al loves him some Al. Classic.

    In for just a second.

    How ya doin Raider O?

  16. Raider O Says:

Nnamdi allows the other DBs to focus on other players, which should help create more opportunities for them.

  17. Raider O Says:

Great, and how are you my friend?

  18. Ataxia Says:

our lack of pass rush is what kills our average dbs on the other side

  19. Raider O Says:

    Len,

I worry about our team after Al dies (after 50 years! lol)? What will happen to the Raiders?!
I know some can’t wait for that day, and think it will help makes us a better team, but I think the Raiders will lose their identity. (I hope not)

    ==============

Thats a Davis philospohy and its right.

Other teams send their best in motion when the other team des and it gives the QB a read advantage because of the defensive shift in reaction to the O’s motion.

Can’t do that with Raiders who just give the one look sometimes, plus like you said, shuts down half the field.

  21. Nnamdi21 Says:

I’m going to say this up till and thru camp…

Mr. Davis has a long ways to go b4 you get worried i think his mom lived till she was 104 or something like that. Im sure Mark Davis will do a good job filling his shoes hes had plenty of time to learn.

  23. Raider O Says:

    Ataxia,

I agree, and I also want to add that CJ, Huff (before last season), Routt, and Eugene did not play well, and were/are not considered great players. They are an Avg secondary at best without Nnamdi.

    Raider O,

    It’s an interesting thought.

I think it would be along the lines of G Halas and His passing.

I think the identity We think about has been missing for the last 7 Years.

Winning cures all. When the Raiders win, their History will be brought out into the light of day again for all to see.

The Winning will be remembered. That will be a Large part of Al’s legacy.

  26. Raider O Says:

    Nnamdi,

You are correct sir. Nnamdi doesn’t expose what our Defense will do, so it doesn’t help the QB adjust, and it helps great opportunities for DBs to make plays on the other side of the field.

  27. Ataxia Says:

The media rips us harder then any other organization in sports till this day, I think that means the mystique is still there maybe not like it used to be but still alive.

  28. Raider O Says:

    Len,

    That makes sense.
I think this team can be great. It has a good Defense after the additions this season, a solid QB, talent at RB & WR, but we need to improve the OL. I’m also not sold on Cable 100%, but I think this team is very close to being a great NFL team.

  29. kidseven Says:

I’m most impressed with Big Al’s humility.

  30. Raider O Says:

    Yes, I did say great!
I think we will have a top 12 defense this season, and our offense can only improve after last season. We still need another year to add talent to the OL, and improve the entire team, but next season we can be great IMO.

  31. RaiderLen Says:

    Raider O,

I like the additions to the staff and the roster…on paper.

I’m in a “show me” frame of mind right now.

    But I’m optimistic. :)

LMN, you do realize that the Yankee fans were so happy to get rid of him at one point that they gave a 90 second ovation when his exodus from the Yankees was announced in the early 90’s. They sucked at that moment.

well, thats it for me, its nearly 0400 and im going home with the sun rising at my back, love this time of year!

  50. buckeyeraider Says:

Man, I can remember that playoff game vs the Browns like it was yesterday. I was about 12. My mom loved Brian Sipe and those Kardiac Kids. She cried after that game.

Some interesting notes about that game. The Browns were counting on the cold to help out against their California opponent. But they practiced in their indoor facility beforehand. The Raiders practiced outside. Their last walkthrough concluded with a huge snowball fight. Then they built A giant snowman, with a patch over one eye, of course.

Plus, Al Davis had those heated benches designed and built for the Raiders just for that game. They had never been used before. The commissioner ruled they would provide the Raiders with a competitive disadvantage. So, Al bought some for the Browns too.
That’s why you see Sam Rutigliano in that America’s game say:”If you see anybody sleeping on those damn heated benches, kick em in the ass and wake em up”.

Red Right 88, a play that will live in infamy for long suffering Browns fans, right up there with the fumble and the Drive. Ha Ha.

views285 Former Vice President Dick Cheney is in intensive care after undergoing major heart surgery Get Politics Alerts

Email Comments 284 WASHINGTON — Former Vice President Dick Cheney disclosed Wednesday that he has undergone surgery to install a small pump to help his heart work, as the 69-year-old enters a new phase of what he called “increasing congestive heart failure.”

“The operation went very well and I am now recuperating,” a still-hospitalized Cheney said in a statement.

The kind of heart pump that Cheney received can be implanted next to the heart to help its main pumping chamber, the left ventricle, pump blood through the body. Such devices are used mainly for short periods, to buy potential transplant candidates time as they await a donor organ.

But they are being studied for use as a permanent therapy for people with severe heart failure who aren’t transplant candidates.

The surgery took place last week at Inova Fairfax Heart and Vascular Institute in Washington’s Northern Virginia suburbs, where Cheney was receiving care Wednesday.

A longtime face of the Republican Party, Cheney has dealt with heart problems much of his adult life, suffering five heart attacks since age 37. He said the latest step, the implanting of a pump called a left ventricular assist device, will allow him to resume an active life.

About 5 million Americans have congestive heart failure in which the heart weakens over time – often as a result of heart attacks – and cannot pump enough blood. Heart transplants are one solution, but few patients find a donor and many are too old or sick for a transplant.

The heart pump Cheney received, known as an LVAD for short, is not a cure, said Dr. Samer Najjar, medical director of the heart transplant and LVAD division at Washington Hospital Center. But by rerouting the blood to take over the job of the left ventricle, the pump relieves pressure on the heart.

And once patients recover from the open-heart surgery, they can experience a much better quality of life, said Najjar, who has had LVAD recipients go back to work or resume hobbies like bowling. Najjar had no firsthand information about Cheney’s case

Beavis and Butt-head {alias mistabrown)are coming back to MTV.

The New York Post’s Michael Starr reports that “Beavis and Butt-head” episodes are “in the works.”

The show, which was a hallmark of ’90s slacker culture, was canceled in 1997.

“The new series would keep Beavis and Butt-head in their perpetual high-school state, but it would be updated so that the pals — who obsessively watch music videos on a battered TV set — could lob their snarky comments at more current targets like Lady Gaga,” the Post reports. “The show’s minimalist animated style is also expected to remain intact.”

The move would both fit into MTV’s broader strategy of returning to scripted fare and, as Starr notes, give the network a “back door” into playing music videos again.

Last month, the Wall Street Journal’s Sam Schechner reported on MTV’s move towards scripted programming, including “The Hard Times of RJ Berger” and “Warren the Ape.”

    From WSJ:

The new shows are part of a shift in resources to broaden MTV’s programming slate beyond the heavy-reality TV fare for which it has become known in the last decade. About 18% of the approximately 50 potential shows MTV plans to test internally this year will be scripted or animated, up from just a handful a few years ago, the network says. MTV executives say they hope to greenlight two to four new scripted shows a year….

“The idea is that we should diversify our programming,” Philippe Dauman, Viacom’s chief executive, said in an interview. “If you limit yourself to one type of show, you’re playing with one hand behind your back.”

Europe’s disappointment with Barack Obama’s presidency is laid bare today as the EU’s most senior figure calls for a dramatic effort to revive transatlantic relations. José Manuel Barroso said that the EU-US relationship was “not living up to its potential” and was being marred by fundamental disagreements on how to deal with the economic crisis, climate change and trade reform. The feelings of a deepening rift are mutual. Senior US figures said last night that Mr Obama could never live up to Europe’s sky-high expectations.

Everyone needs to read that piece on Vanilla D it’s outstanding. I have been saying this for the entire time that I’ve been on this blog. There is a method to that that most people just do nto understand. There was a guy in here named Jedi-Raider(Jettisoned-Raider) who just couldn’t undrstand the theory behind the defense single high safety he would protest endleesly that it was stupid because it was impossible for it to be successful. I’ve watched this team for over 40 years and I’ve seen it work with Tatum, Rod Woodon, Ronnie Lott and now this new edition of Huff and the young guy’s. It was just that we had a guyin Stu who sucked at it.

I had to scream at Nnamdi as well as others that the reason Nnamdi was given that amount of money was because he was one of maybe 3 players that could do what he does. That he was doing his job eventhough he had zero stats in a game. Teams would avoid that side of the field and weaken their offense because he was there. But he never understood until now. Rod Woodson played in a cover2 made a lot of plays put up great stats but they still threw at him. If you throw 8 passes at Nnamdi he is almost gauranteed to get one or two of them. So I said stop cmplaining and embrace it. That’s why YOU get the money. Your in the probowl every year and a sure fire HOFer. What’s not to like?

Wants to play out side in Chris Johnson’s spot and frankly he probably will see more time there this year.

Johnson’s production fell off last year and he’s had knee problems in his past…

    ***

N21: CJ37 has been VERY SOLID the past 2 years for us since replacing DeAngelo Hall in the starting lineup.

no knee problems during that span that I know of. who cares if he’s 30? 2003-2006 before he joined Oakland he probably had less than 50 tackles during those 4 seasons combined. not much wear & tear. I have no problem with late bloomers

and draft status means nothing to me. If 7th round rookie Ware beats out 2nd round Routt heading into his 6th year? so be it

Routt saying he’s more comfortable playing CB opposite Nnamdi because it’s easier is lame (if thats even true). He’s getting paid good money and thinks he’ll play better elsewhere, where he can rely more heavily on speed than instincts? He sucks. PERIOD

  180. Bo Schembechler Jackson Says:

Only those with amnesia would want to put GOP back in charge of things

Over the course of eight short years — between 2000 and 2008 — the Republicans methodically executed their plan to transform American society. They systematically transferred wealth from the middle class to the wealthiest two percent of Americans — slashing taxes for the wealthy. They eviscerated the rules that held Wall Street, Big Oil and private insurance companies accountable to the public. They allowed and encouraged the recklessness of the big Wall Street banks that ultimately collapsed the economy and cost eight million Americans their jobs. They ignored exploding health care costs, tried to privatize Social Security, gave the drug companies open season to gouge American consumers and presided over a decline in real incomes averaging $2,000 per family. They entangled America in an enormously costly, unnecessary war in Iraq, pursued a directionless policy that left Afghanistan to fester, and sullied America’s good name throughout the world.

Their economic policy of cutting taxes for the wealthy and deregulating big Corporations failed to create jobs. In fact, over his eight year term, George Bush’s administration created exactly zero net private sector jobs. They inherited a Federal budget with surpluses as far as the eye could see and rolled up more debt than all of the previous Presidents in the over 200 years of American history. And in the end they left the economy in collapse.

But McGrady is going to have to prove he can help. He is going to have to impress in a workout and pass a physical where his knees will get an especially close inspection.

He’s not that McGrady anymore. He looked pedestrian with the Knicks last season, he shot just 39 percent and played limited minutes. He also had to miss games because of soreness in his left knee.

This is where McGrady is now, hoping to get a workout with the Clippers.

DeAngelo Hall, Packers assistant listed as tax delinquents

Posted by Michael David Smith (PFT)

The local paper in Northampton County, Virginia has published a list of the county’s biggest delinquent taxpayers, and a couple of NFL names made the cut.

Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall is listed as owing more than $6,000 in delinquent real estate taxes, while Packers defensive backs coach Darren Perry and his wife are listed as owing more than $14,000 in real estate taxes and close to $3,000 in delinquent personal property taxes.

Neither Hall nor Perry responded when the paper tried to contact them.

The story on Hall and Perry marks the second time this week we’ve noted a story about an NFL tax delinquent; on Monday we passed along a report that former NFL receiver Koren Robinson is the third-worst tax delinquent in North Carolina.

Raja would have been a great addition and we should have signed him if possible simply because he would provide so much off the bench. But now that we can’t get him, I would rather see the Lakers sign a decent backup big than re-sign S. Brown. Sasha can give us the 12 minutes Brown would provide, and right now we have no proven backup big for when Bynum goes down with his annual knee injury.

Bo, the Lakers can re-sign Brown to watever amount they desire over the cap because they hold his Bird rights…but the Lakers also have $1.7 million left of the MLE (they only used $4 mill of the $5.7 Mill MLE to sign blake) that they can use to sign a free agent….they can also sign they to a minimum contract and I am not sure what that figure might be.

The rotation is pretty set with Bynum, Gasol, Odom, and Artest in that front court. Is going to be hard for anyone to find some minutes there.

My point is Caracter is already head and shoulders above Josh Powell, so whatever minutes would have been there for Powell are now Caracter’s, IMO. I think that’s his worst case scenario.

    Posted by Evan Silva (PFT)

Former first-round pick Kwame Harris was better at committing penalties than blocking defensive linemen during five years with the 49ers. Harris spent last year out of the NFL after an 11-start, 2008 season in Oakland.

Now, according to Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times, Harris “is apparently retiring.”

Released Thursday by the UFL’s Florida Tuskers, Harris is expected to call it quits after appearing in 86 career NFL games, including 55 starts. The 26th overall pick in the 2003 NFL Draft, Harris was a major disappointment in the pros.

Harris was replaced on the Jay Gruden-coached Tuskers’ roster by former Steelers offensive guard Darnell Stapleton.

Always did the slews, which are fast disappearing.
One on each side, headlights shining to opposite bank, on the glint of the eyes, while the person right above gigs him.
My brother and I’s job was to yank them off, and put in sack..lol..can still recall the “Ewwwww..his eye popped out”
    Fun stuff :)

Cool man. we use mag lites and a wire basket for the frogs that self-closes. Ever try to catch any by hand? I like the challenge (sometimes). We use a classic 3 prong gig and a net. now I think they make 5 prong and one that automatically snaps shut to ensure the best possible results

Oops. Phil Manboob birdied 18 to finish at +1, but still faces a tough battle to make the cut tomorrow.

Never did it in the water by hand. Once you get the light on the eyes, the moment you move the light, they duck under.
However, many times we would be driving along, between places, where these HUGE bullfrogs would just be sitting on the road..so fat from all the bugs they couldn’t even hop..would just hop out and pick them up..not exactly ’sporting’, but some of those legs looked like turkey legs.

We did use the ‘claw’ as we called it..dead center hit’s required..good thing about the claw is you didn’t risk stabbing a leg..just seemed to miss more with the claw, and ultimately went back to the “pitchfork” as the kids in the neighborhood would call it.

Now..”BY HAND”?? son has made me promise I would take him noodling..now THAT looks like a rush..just no cats around here like that..all back in your neck of the woods.

What else you want me to talk about until camp starts?

    ***

the dominance of the Miami Heat and how they should sign Allen Iverson!

    ^^^^^^^
Miami Heat dominant? They haven’t played one game yet.

They have a long way to go before being considered dominant and be considered a champion of anything.

Better hope LeDiva and Wades knees hold up! hahaha

  277. DKnight007 Says:

Yeah, anyone who still roots for Tigger Woods is an idiot.

I’m rooting for any player BUT Woods to win tournaments from here on out.

The jerk has won enough anyway….time for others who deserve it to shine now!
