Al on George Steinbrenner

The Raiders released the following statement from Al Davis regarding the passing of Yankees owner George Steinbrenner:

“He was a friend and a warrior. We not only shared a birthday, but also an unyielding will to win and an unparalleled commitment to excellence.

“I judge sports figures based on individual achievement, team achievement and contributions to the game,” Davis said. “George was right up there with me at No. 1 — bright, aggressive and, most of all, not afraid.

“When the Yankees were going through the lean times in the ’80s and after we beat the Redskins in the Super Bowl in Tampa, George and I would talk and I would pep him up,” Davis said. “Later on, he did the same for me when Tampa beat us in the Super Bowl.”

The Lakers, meanwhile, continue to talk to free-agent guard Shannon Brown about a return after signing Blake and Monday’s re-signing of Derek Fisher One source close to the situation said Brown and the Lakers were in “serious discussions” about hammering out a new deal.

Not sure why you don’t want Brown back, Dakota.

Blake’s signing means no more PG for Brown. He’ll compete with Sasha for back up Kobe minutes.

Modesty is not Big Al’s best quality, is it?

He seems to be completely unaware of how he is seen by the outside world these days.

And who uses the death of someone else to pump himself up?

I want to believe in the rebirth of the Raiders (I mean I DO believe), but can this guy really turn things around?

Raja would have been a great addition and we should have signed him if possible simply because he would provide so much off the bench. But now that we can’t get him, I would rather see the Lakers sign a decent backup big than re-sign S. Brown. Sasha can give us the 12 minutes Brown would provide, and right now we have no proven backup big for when Bynum goes down with his annual knee injury.

    Dakota,

I believe there is a rule that allows the Lakers to resign their own FA (Brown) but does not give them the cash to sign an outside player.

And there just aren’t very many big men around who could back up Bynum, although I would like one as well. Just no more big, talentless white guys like Mark Madsen, Jack Haley or Chuck Nevitt.

At least re-sign Powell or Mbenga then.

Bo, the Lakers can re-sign Brown to watever amount they desire over the cap because they hold his Bird rights…but the Lakers also have $1.7 million left of the MLE (they only used $4 mill of the $5.7 Mill MLE to sign blake) that they can use to sign a free agent….they can also sign they to a minimum contract and I am not sure what that figure might be.

I have seen him play in the SL games on NBAtv, and I think he has a bright future, however, i am more concerned with next season.

Phil doesn’t give rookies much playing time, so I wouldn’t count on him contributing much in 2010-11.

Brad Miller would be nice off the bench though….

Kurt Thomas would be a nice backup big too.

The rotation is pretty set with Bynum, Gasol, Odom, and Artest in that front court. Is going to be hard for anyone to find some minutes there.

My point is Caracter is already head and shoulders above Josh Powell, so whatever minutes would have been there for Powell are now Caracter’s, IMO. I think that’s his worst case scenario.

Best case scenario is him taking LaMar’s front court minutes and allowing LaMar to play SF and on the perimeter where he prefers.

Former first-rounder Kwame Harris apparently retiring

    Posted by Evan Silva (PFT)

Former first-round pick Kwame Harris was better at committing penalties than blocking defensive linemen during five years with the 49ers. Harris spent last year out of the NFL after an 11-start, 2008 season in Oakland.

Now, according to Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times, Harris “is apparently retiring.”

Released Thursday by the UFL’s Florida Tuskers, Harris is expected to call it quits after appearing in 86 career NFL games, including 55 starts. The 26th overall pick in the 2003 NFL Draft, Harris was a major disappointment in the pros.

Harris was replaced on the Jay Gruden-coached Tuskers’ roster by former Steelers offensive guard Darnell Stapleton.

In an interview with 96.5 The Buzz in Kansas City (via NFL.com), Terrell Owens said he won’t be playing for the Chiefs. “Me and Todd Haley, we don’t get along,” Owens said.

Of course, it’s not as if Haley would want to deal with T.O., either.

As a result of Owens’ past actions, he’s essentially dealing with a 20-team league, at most. Though we still think he’ll eventually get a job, his reputation not only will result in some teams being hesitant; it’ll also result in plenty shouting “hell no.”

Americans want more government spending, not less.

Where did the notion arise that Americans are more concerned about the national debt than the problem of joblessness?

The truth is that most Americans want “additional government spending to create jobs and stimulate the economy.”
