Ford signs contract

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, July 19th, 2010 at 12:45 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders have signed fourth-round draft pick Jacoby Ford, a wide receiver out of Clemson who will also compete as a return specialist, according to their Twitter account and team Web site.

Draft picks still to be signed are first-round pick Rolando McClain, second-round selection Lamarr Houston and seventh-round choice Stevie Brown.

Probably of bigger consequence than the Ford signing _ for Week 1, anyway _ is that Tennessee has reportedly reached an agreement which would ensure running back Chris Johnson reports to trainnig camp on time.

That means barring injury, Johnson and his 2,000-plus yards should be available to take dead aim on the NFL’s 29th-ranked run defense, although Oakland has made some bold moves to upgrade in that area.

DMac has some skills, lets not kid ourselfs. He could be used the way the Pats used Kevin Faulk and might end up pretty good in that role.

Stevie Brown’s value is much higher than most other seventh rounders because of his prestigious Michigan degree. It is the Southwick premium – extra salary paid only to credentialed players.

Disclaimer: I DO NOT WISH AL DEAD, THIS IS ONLY FRIENDLY ADVICE:

If you are going to kick the bucket, 2010 is the year to do it for owners of a sports franchise or for anyone else with a ton of wealth for that matter….no federal estate tax in 2010. The Steinbrenners just scored big-time savings! George’s estate is estimated to be worth about $1.1 billion and he saved nearly $500 million in taxes by kicking the can in 2010 (of course it may cost a little more in Capital Gains taxes, but not nearly $500 million).

I am looking at you Al, still a lot of time left for a wise estate planning strategy for 2010.

I would also just point out the Oregon Death with Dignity Act….might come in handy with your estate planning objectives!

Always nice to save some money!

Amid speculation that Dwyane Wade could end up playing more point guard, Wade said Sunday that he expects to continue starting at shooting guard – not point guard – and that point guard is “Mario Chalmers’ job to lose.” Wade expects the Heat to start a traditional point guard: “I think that would be the plan. I would like to play [shooting guard].”

At times, the Heat likely will use a lineup with Wade handling point guard duties and playing alongside starting small forward LeBron James, swingman Mike Miller and two power rotation players. But Wade does not expect that lineup to start games, meaning Miller would come off the bench.

Carlos Arroyo, who is expected to re-sign, ended last season as the Heat’s starting point guard and will challenge Chalmers for the job. It’s possible another point guard could be added.

Chalmers, on crutches because of a sprained ankle sustained in a pickup game last week, said he expects to be able to resume playing “hopefully within the next month.”

True, and I doubt the government would accept a death certificate signed by the Raiders’ team doctors….especially since they cannot seem to diagnose knee injuries.

Collinsworth: If lockout occurs, players will go broke
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on July 19, 2010 12:15 PM ET
In the final hour of Florio’s Oosthuizen-tinged guest hosting gig on The Dan Patrick Show, Cris Collinsworth came on to talk about the 2010 season and the possibility there won’t be football in 2011.

Collinsworth was part of two players strikes during his career. And while he rightly pointed out the current situation would be an owner’s lockout, the players still have more to lose in the short term if there is a work stoppage.

“The players will run out of money and the owners will be paid,” Collinsworth said. “In that scenario I can’t imagine a way where the owners won’t come out ahead in this one.”

Even though players get paid more than they did in Collinsworth’s days, he’s convinced many would go broke if they missed a significant portion of the season. It’s a sad statement, but rings true. NFLPA head DeMaurice Smith also stressed financial and benefits problems that his players would face in a previous segment with Florio.

A lockout next offseason looks almost inevitable now, but the real test for the union will come closer to when regular player paychecks (Week One) are scheduled to show up.

Unfortunately, all 30 installments aren’t available as one cohesive set, but on the brightside, that means you won’t end up paying for anything you don’t want.

  52. JLofty Says:

BigTed we need 40 times and contract sizes to know who the Al and Cable will keep.
I’d say Higgins better pull his head out or he’s gone.
Watkins has shown some flashes and Miller was kept on the ACTIVE roster with a broken leg or whatever for a whole season for some reason.
Bey and Schillens start, Murphy rotates heavily. Watkins may be #4. After that it boils down to who plays ST.
Ford, Miller and JLHoudini will fight for P/KR duties. Else goes to practice squad unless they can hit and show something warranting being around.

  53. BigTed707 Says:

    I’ll take:
    1)Schilens
    2)Murphy
    3)Heyward-Bey
    4)Higgins

    6)Watkins
and If they keep a 7)Hubbard – the big boy from Wisconsin.

    Practice Squad: Adeniji and Miller

    I’d Cut:
    Bodiford, Figurs, and Jonathan Holland.

I like the new NFLPA president. He already has a fund going for the players while they’re locked out, and the players are already saving according to a plan the union has lined out for them. Hopefully it’s the beginning of a trend.
