Just saw ESPN’s “My Wish” with Jailen Cooper meeting the Raiders . . . COOL!!!

  2. Plunketthead Says:

Players saving according to a plan?
I have a new plan that will make you save?
    hahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
    hahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahhahaha
I bet for every one that saves, theres 4 with money problems. How many baby mamas does DMAC support with a monthly ten grand check?

Private sector unions are shrinking by the day while public unions grow too expensive to support.
Almost every strike I have seen in my days winds up as a minus for the members and a plus for the corporations, attorneys, and union officials.

  3. Plunketthead Says:

Jailen is a smart and likable young man.
I loved his answer to Jerrymacs question

  4. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

I like the NFLPA’s idea of refusing to sign a new deal until the owners prove they’re going broke. It’s a moral fight, and the union has right on their side. Sure there’s some players who can’t manage their money. As a Raider fan, you know that all to well. It’s Al Davis’s money most of them blow. But most players away from whacky Raider land are smart and can manage their money, and I think the union will come out of this just fine.

  5. buckeyeraider Says:

    Plunk,
Saw that today when I got home from work. Very nice piece.

Best wishes to that lil fella.
That was first class by the Raiders all the way.

  6. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

It was PR. Every team does this. I know Al Davis already invented the pig skin football and the modern black man as we know it, but are we really going to credit him with having sick kids visit their favorite sports teams, too? If this kid’s truly a Raider fan, Davis should have done something really charitable, like retired.

  7. Just Fire Baby Says:

Wow that might have been the most boring 4 hour drive of my life.

Jailen seemed to have been picking up the offense quicker than Jamarcus.

Bruce only had to tell him twice and he had it down.

  8. Just Fire Baby Says:

I’m sure every team does stuff like that, but wonder why ESPN chose to run with the Raiders version?

I’m sure Al and Herrera weren’t calling the network pitching them on this story. Some one had to think it went above and beyond to setup a camera in Cable’s office for the initial phone call.

  9. RaidingTexas Says:

Who credited Al with Jailen’s wish? It was the Make-a-Wish Foundation and ESPN that set it up. The thing is, that North Carolina kid picked the Raiders. We (Raiders fans) are all over the place and still growing!

  10. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Oh, there’s Raider fans in North Carolina? OK, I get it. So, there’s no..say…Cowboy fans in North Carolina? Jets fans in North Carolina? Bills fans in North Carolina? 49er fans in North Carolina? Not even one fan of each team? The Raiders are “in” North Carolina, as if most NFL fans in N. Carolina are Raider fans? Or we just found proof there’s at least one Raider fan in North Carolina? That’s what we’re celebrating?

  11. RaidingTexas Says:

Slow night, Real? Trying to bait an argument over something as silly as a charitable 5-minute television segment. That’s pretty lame even for you. Have a good evening. Try not to kick any dogs or beat any women before you go to bed.

  12. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Ha ha. You guys hate it when I make you think.

  13. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Why do Raider fans act is if they’re taking over a region because there’s Raider fans there? There are fans of every NFL team in every city. Every city you can find a club for fans of each NFL team where they meet up to watch games. Every single one. Yet Raider fans think that because there’s at least one Raider fan in North Carolina…LOOK OUT. The Nation’s taking over. Pretty delusional.

  14. Thec07 Says:

    What up NATION???

  15. Thec07 Says:

I see we signed JFORD… cant wait to see him in NFL action, he is a space eater, should be fun to watch how Hue Jack is going to use him….

Seems like former Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell has a humongous ego and refuses to lower his standards. Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times tweeted:

“According to a source close to former Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell, he has no intentions of playing in the UFL,” Aaron Wilson wrote on his Twitter page.

The former first overall pick either feels he’s too good for the UFL or is embarrassed to go down to what I call, the minors, to prove himself to be an NFL quarterback
    ******************

Good move on his part – not going to the UFL. But for other reasons. He’d no doubt fail there too and confirm to everyone what we already know – He’s a #1 LOSER.

Screw JaLoser & the horse he came in on. Just remember, no matter what color you paint a turd, it’s still a turd. JaLoser was our turd that we were stuck with for three years. The patient is feeling better now that we’ve taken a dump.

Jerry Rice “scared to death” about Hall of Fame ceremony
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on July 19, 2010 6:35 PM ET
Competing comes naturally to Jerry Rice. But he’s “scared to death” about the upcoming Hall of Fame festivities in a few weeks, including his speech.

Rice spoke at the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship in Lake Tahoe this weekend, and said that Aaron Rodgers and Matt Ryan tried to convince him to come out of retirement there. (Rodgers didn’t have any luck, but was able to play with two childhood heroes.)

Emmitt Smith thinks all-time rushing mark will be “approached”
Posted by Mike Florio on July 19, 2010 11:25 PM ET
In less than three weeks, former Cowboys (and Cardinals) running back Emmitt Smith will be memorialized for all posterity in Canton. His first-year-of-eligibility enshrinement was a no-brainer, given that he holds the NFL’s all-time rushing record, with 18,355 yards.

And while LaDainian Tomlinson is the closest active player with a bit less than 6,000 yards to go (which equates to roughly half of his career rushing output to date), Smith believes that the record will some day be “approached.”

    Not necessarily broken, but “approached.”

“I do believe it will be approached,” Smith told Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “I would be naive to think that it could be not approached, because, hey, no one actually thought that Walter Payton’s record could be approached. Here I am, in 2002, ended up breaking that record and extended it out to 18,000-plus yards. I’m not going to sit here and tell you the record is not going to be approached or broken, but I do know this: It’s going to take an awful lot to get there, because I know what it took for me to get there. It’s not easy.”

Still, we think that Smith’s record is safe. Even with an 18-game season, few modern running backs display the durability that Smith demonstrated. Moreover, more and more teams are using two or more backs (Smith’s Cowboys now use three), which dilutes the opportunities for any one of them to get on the sustained pace necessary to knock off Smith.

So we’ll be shocked if anyone gets within sniffing distance of Smith’s record at any point in the foreseeable future. Though we’re not ready to proclaim the mark an DiMaggio-style achievement that likely never will be surpassed, it’s far closer to the Yankee Clipper’s 56-game hitting streak than any other NFL record currently on the books, with maybe the exception of Brett Favre’s all-time interception record.Emmitt Smith will be closely watching Chris Johnson and Raiders Darren Mcfadden and Jets LaDainian Tomlinson
To approach the mark but not surpass it.

Head coach attacked a team employee a year ago. Raiders’ brushed it off as typical training camp intensity, many fans promised it would motivate the team. Team ends up with same record as it did in 2008.

We benched Russell, Fat Kidd. Gradkowski went in, got buried, wound up on the sideline in a sling. Our offensive line stinks, offensive playcalling and organization is high school potential, at best. An offensive game plan that puts the quarterback on an island. We benched Russell. We could have cut Russell before last season. We just would have wound up platooning a bunch of league journeymen, who would all eventually get injured with our line.

…………………..when j. russell got benched it opened some eyes and said this aint a bad looking team, but then gradkowski got hurt, then people said what if he didnt get hurt? with a average qb we could be something ,it got people thinking.

Chris Johnson Settles with Titans, Will Report to Camp
7/19/2010 4:35 PM ET By Dan Graziano
Chris Johnson isn’t getting the long-term deal he wanted, but he and the Tennessee Titans have agreed on a compromise deal that will get the star running back to training camp on time. According to NFL sources, the Titans will move up about $1.5 million of the $2.5 million in escalator bonuses Johnson is scheduled to get in 2012 as a result of his record-setting 2009 season and add it to his 2010 salary. He’ll now make about $2 million between the escalators and his scheduled base salary of $550,000.
Johnson, who rushed for more than 2,000 yards and set an NFL single-season record for yards gained from scrimmage in 2009, held out of the team’s offseason workout program as he made clear his desire for a new contract. The Titans told him they didn’t feel it was right to be renegotiating signed deals after only two years, no matter how brilliant the second of those years was.
Last week, though, the Titans floated this compromise concept, designed to allay Johnson’s concerns that his 2010 salary was too low for a player of his caliber while still sticking to their refusal to re-do deals after two years. According to the source, Johnson decided the compromise was good enough to get him to camp, though he continues to hold out hope that he and the team can negotiate a new contract.
According to the source, the length and value of Johnson’s current contract will not change under the compromise. The only change is that $1.5 million will be moved up from 2012 and paid instead in 2010. Of course, if Johnson does eventually get his new deal, the money he’s giving up in 2012 will be irrelevant, since that season would be incorporated into the new deal……………over……

Merling, 25, could face 15 years in prison if convicted. He could also be punished by the NFL for violation of the league’s personal-conduct policy.

The woman involved in the incident is two months pregnant with the couple’s second child. According to the Sun-Sentinel, Merling is accused of hitting the woman in the face and head.

Merling, 6-foot-5, 305 pounds, had 33 tackles and 2 1/2 sacks off the bench for the Dolphins last season.

The Clemson product was drafted by Miami in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft.

Merling is the fourth member of the Dolphins roster to be arrested since February. Defensive lineman Tony McDaniel was arrested for domestic battery, while cornerback Will Allen and running back Ronnie Brown were both arrested on DUI charges……….over……

Maurkice Pouncey May Have Taken $100K Payment From Agent While at Florida
7/19/2010 1:15 PM ET By FanHouse Staff
The University of Florida and NCAA investigators have launched a probe to determine if former Gators center Maurkice Pouncey received money from an agent as his college career came to an end, according to ESPN.com.

Sources told ESPN that the allegations center around a $100,000 payment Pouncey allegedly received from a representative of an agent between the Southeastern Conference championship game and the Sugar Bowl. Pouncey was drafted in the first round by the Pittsburgh Steelers in April.

“We were made aware of some information in early June that we reported to law enforcement and we then shared with the NCAA and the SEC,” athletic director Jeremy Foley said in a statement released Monday. “At this time we have no information that has indicated that there are any compliance issues for the University of Florida.”………………over……

  89. RaiderRockstar Says:

In an approach similar to previous football leagues, the UFL mostly adheres to standard NFL and football rules with a few differences of note:

No Tuck Rule – In the NFL, if a passer brings his arm forward in a passing motion and then loses possession of the ball as he is attempting to tuck it back toward his body, it is considered a forward pass (and thus an incomplete pass if the ball hits the ground). This “tuck rule” is one of the most controversial rules in the NFL; in the UFL, however, it is called a fumble.

Touchdown celebrations – Player celebrations (individual or group) are permitted only in the end zones or the bench areas.

According to league sources, Barnes could be a Raptor as early as Tuesday on a two-year deal worth about $9 million (all figures U.S.). The deal is not finalized but sources suggested both sides are confident it will be done. The move will have to be a sign-and-trade deal for the unrestricted free agent and will eat about $4.5 million of the $14.5 million trade exception the Raptors got when Chris Bosh left for Miami.

On Saturday, center Brad Miller turned down an offer from the Cavs to take a three-year, $15 million deal from the Houston Rockets.

The Cavs continue to have trade talks involving Delonte West, who has a partially guaranteed contract. League sources indicate the Cavs are beginning to get some traction with several teams in trade talks for West.

The Warriors have agreed to send point guard C.J. Watson to the Chicago Bulls for a 2011 second-round pick, multiple team sources told the Bay Area News Group on Tuesday.

The deal was not complete as of press time. Watson, a restricted free agent, signed a two-year, $7 million deal with the Warriors, who then traded him to the Bulls, a source said. Watson is expected to back up Bulls All-Star point guard Derrick Rose.

The Warriors now are in the market for a point guard behind starter Stephen Curry.

UPDATE 9:17 am: Matt Barnes is not going anywhere. Yet.

It puts Barnes back at square one. He has offers — a bunch of contending teams want him but for limited minutes at a salary of less than $2 million a year. He wants more money and more minutes. So he keeps searching.

Jamaal Magloire will bang bodies around for the Heat

    By Kurt Helin

“Jamaal Magloire has a role and that role is to beat the hell out of people.” A quote from Stan Van Gundy (via Orlando Pinstriped Post).

That is just fine with Miami. Which is why the Heat signed him to a one-year deal, according to Ira Winderman of the Sun Sentinel. It’s a one-year, veteran’s minimum deal of $1.4 million.

The Heat now have Magloire, Joel Anthony, Zydrunas Ilgauskas and rookie Dexter Pittman under contract at center. The hope is that one — or some combination of the group — can give the Heat some defensive presence inside and rebounding that will free up Chris Bosh to be a terror at the four.

Magloire is considered a very good guy in the locker room, as well.

However, there are question marks all around. Magloire barely saw the court last year, appearing in just 23 games behind Jermaine O’Neal (who left town) and Joel Anthony. And Anthony is undersized for a center, Ilgauskas is old and was not a key part of Cleveland this season, and Pittman is an untested rookie.

But if they can get solid center play out of the group, they just filled what most people think is their biggest weakness.

Even Brett Favre’s agent thinks Favre is a drama queen
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on July 19, 2010 3:26 PM ET

Sometimes at PFT we try (and usually fail) to add value to a given quote by trying to say something funny or informative before it. That’s not necessary this time.

We present Brett Favre’s agent Bus Cook, talking to Men’s Journal on the summer day Favre spoke to ESPN about his ankle surgery.

“Brett talked to goddamned Ed Werder at ESPN, says he needs ankle surgery. Now why did he do that?” Cook asked. “I’ve got [Brad] Childress calling. I’ve got reporters calling all damn morning. Goddammit, why does he have to be such a goddamned drama queen? Play, don’t play, goddamn, people are getting sick of it. I’m getting sick of it!

“Why does he have to talk to these people? What good does it do? Ed Werder at ESPN! What’s he ever done for anybody other than say, ‘Look, look, Mommy, I got this first, ain’t I special?’ You got problems with surgery, talk to your wife. Why talk to goddamned Ed Werder?”

It’s somehow heartening that the man perhaps closest to Favre feels just like the rest of us. (Well, except goddamned Ed Werder.)

Later Favre enters the office and offers a sheepish apology. Cook’s response: “Jesus, Brett. You never learn. You guys go talk. I’ve got goddamn phone calls to make,” before poking a finger at Favre. “Thanks to you.”

Never thought I’d say this, but I may have to pick up a copy of this month’s Men’s Journal.

Former Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell enters not guilty plea in drug charge

MOBILE, Ala. — Former Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell entered a plea of not guilty this morning to a charge of possession of a controlled substance.

Russell, the former Williamson High and LSU star, was arrested on July 5 after investigators found one bottle of codeine syrup during a search of his River Forest Drive home by the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office’s undercover narcotics team. Investigators said Russell did not have a prescription for the opiate. A preliminary hearing was set for Aug. 11.

Russell, dressed sharply in a black suit emblazoned with his initials, nodded to reporters but did not respond to questions.

“We’re looking forward to the hearing on Aug. 11,” said Russell’s attorney, Donald Briskman. “I asked the court to set it early so we could get this behind us.”

As for Russell’s plans in the meantime, Briskman said he would be “getting prepared to play professional football.” The No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 NFL draft was released from the Raiders in May after three disappointing seasons and had been hoping to catch on with another NFL team.

The media today acts as if he just evaded taxes and cheated on his wife, or something. They don’t talk about him. And they think that’s an appropriate punishment. He should be the poster boy for everything evil about sports. But instead, the media has let him slink away into obscurity…which is what HE WANTS. He was always reclusive. They’ve rewarded this man. They’re letting him go on with his life, his life after the limelight and scandals. They’ll never let Barry Bonds and Marion Jones do the same, even though they did nothing worse than what McGuire did.

The biggest disappointments from the class of 2007

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on July 20, 2010 1:40 PM ET

They say you can’t judge a draft class for at least three years.

So on a slow-moving Tuesday in July, let’s take a look back at the first round of the 2007 draft. This item about No. 9 overall pick Falcons defensive end Jamaal Anderson being on the bubble got us thinking. How many players in the first round have proven to be disappointments?

Here’s how we’d categorize 31 first-round picks from that class. We gave consideration to where the player was taken when evaluating the success of the pick.

(Note that the late Gaines Adams tragically passed away last year and we’ll keep him out of the discussion.)

Home run picks (6): Calvin Johnson, Joe Thomas, Adrian Peterson, Patrick Willis, Darrelle Revis, Jon Beason.

Great picks (4): Leon Hall, Michael Griffin, Brandon Meriweather, Anthony Spencer.

Good picks (7) :Lawrence Timmons, Aaron Ross, Dwayne Bowe, Robert Meachem, Joe Staley, Ben Grubbs, Greg Olsen.

That’s the good news. 17 of 31 picks can be seen as net positives. Now for the rest . . .

Vaguely disappointing (5): Levi Brown, LaRon Landry, Amobi Okoye, Marshawn Lynch, Anthony Gonzalez.

Next stop b-word, but still with original team (5): Jamaal Anderson, Justin Harrell, Jarvis Moss, Reggie Nelson, Craig Davis.

Given away for scraps (3): Ted Ginn, Adam Carriker, Brady Quinn.

JaMarcus Russell deserves his own category (1): JaMarcus Russell.

It’s interesting to note that the top 11 includes four of the best players at their positions, but the last eleven picks had fewer misfires. Picks No. 23-29 included a string of seven straight solid players: Bowe, Meriweather, Beason, Spencer, Meachem, Staley, and Grubbs.

MDS also pointed out that the Jets’ trade down to Carolina was a classic case of a win-win for both sides.

Thanks for joining us in this exercise of random list-making.

    Joe Biden

Here at home, when Americans were standing in long lines to give blood after the attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, we squandered an obvious opportunity to make service a noble cause again, and rekindle an American spirit of community.
    Joe Biden

I support immediate financial assistance to the newly elected Palestinian president. Now, I don’t know what those numbers will be, and I don’t know how it’s going to be framed.
    Joe Biden

It is my view that we cannot conduct foreign policy at the extremes.
    Joe Biden

Just talk to me as a father – not what the Constitution says. What do you feel?
    Joe Biden

Let’s just be smart this time. I’m looking for smart.
    Joe Biden

Look, freedom is an overwhelming American notion. The idea that we want to see the world, the peoples of the world free is something that all of us subscribe to.
    Joe Biden

No matter how you cut it, this real debate on personal accounts is about the legitimacy of Social Security; it’s not about the solvency of Social Security.
    Joe Biden

No one making less than $250,000 under Barack Obama’s plan will see one single penny of their tax raised, whether it’s their capital gains tax, their income tax, investment tax, any tax.
    Joe Biden

Now, people when I say that look at me and say, ‘What are you talking about, Joe? You’re telling me we have to go spend money to keep from going bankrupt?’. The answer is yes, that’s what I’m telling you.
    Joe Biden

The devastating punch we took on September 11th still reverberates throughout American society.
    Joe Biden

The Middle East is hopeful. There’s hope there.
    Joe Biden

This is absolutely bizarre that we continue to subsidize highways beyond the gasoline tax, airlines, and we don’t subsidize, we don’t want to subsidize a national rail system that has environmental impact.
    Joe Biden

This nuclear option is ultimately an example of the arrogance of power.
    Joe Biden

Well, I’m telling them two things. One is that, look, this is going to be something when the American people realize – once it’s passed – that, A, it does take care of preexisting conditions; B, you’re insurance rates aren’t going to skyrocket; C, the insurance companies aren’t going to be running the show like they were before; D, you’re going to be in a position where you can keep your insurance that you have. That once the American public realizes that, you’re going to get a reward for this. They’re going to be rewarded.

LT: Henderson was asked to protect the blindside of a QB that didn’t know the offense, didn’t care, had horrible footwork, zero leadership skills, bad accuracy & timing. no pocket awareness. Mario looked much better with Gallery besides him and also much better with Bruce & Charlie at QB. Mario Henderson finally producing at LT on an island in his 4th season is far from a sure thing, but at least we’ll have Barnes & Veldheer to fall back on

LG: Gallery is back at 100 percent. we have very little depth at guard. I don’t want to see Pears, Barnes or Morris there. We haven’t seen Loper, Campbell, Smith, Parsons, etc.

C: Satele has another year of the zbs under his belt and won’t be challenged by Chris Morris this year. 16 game starter will have every opportunity to sink or swim. adding a stud fullback would help make up for some strength concerns. Cable thinks he’s “the guy” – remember that we traded for him and bypassed a center in this year & last years draft. I think he’ll be fine.

RG: Carlisle is a 5 year starter who can get his job done, but doesn’t dominate play after play. He’s not the best and he’s not the worst. Just an average guy that can hold his own if the guys around him handle thier business

RT: Walker is bigger and stronger that Cornell Green. he won’t allow as many sacks or commit as many penalties. plus he’ll be a road grader/mauler in the running game

Let’s not forget that an improved passing attack means less 8 man fronts and more opportunities to run the football. Jason Campbell will be tested early and often. nobody even wanted him for a 5th rounder in last year’s draft. he’ll need to get the ball out quickly and limit turnovers. Hue Jackson will provide a less predictable offensive gameplan and make sure our guys on O know thier assignments.

The O-Line has a lot to prove, but I have a feeling that they will surprise many.

Jim Michalczik & Chris Morgan will be more involved with this unit and Tom Cable will be an observer.

JaMarcus Russell Pleads Not Guilty to Drug Charge5
7/20/2010 12:08 PM ET By FanHouse Staff
Dressed in a black suit, former Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell let his lawyer enter a not guilty plea to a felony narcotics charge on his behalf at a Mobile, Ala., courtroom on Tuesday.

The short court appearance came two weeks after undercover sheriff’s deputies raided the home of the former No. 1 overall pick’s house where they found a bottle of codeine syrup, a controlled substance. Several other people were reportedly at the house, but he was the only one arrested.

Russell, who didn’t talk to reporters on his way in and out of the courtroom, is scheduled to be back in court for a preliminary hearing on Aug. 1.

Russell’s attorney, Donald Briskman, told Mobile’s Press-Register that Russell is “getting prepared to play professional football.” Russell, 24, remains a free agent after the Raiders released him after three lackluster seasons.

Good picks (7): Lawrence Timmons, Aaron Ross, Dwayne Bowe, Robert Meachem, Joe Staley, Ben Grubbs, Greg Olsen.

A Massachusetts police officer resigned after leaving his beat to see a dwarf porn star called “Bridget the Midget” and lied about the visit during an investigation into the incident, local media reported Tuesday.

Officer Richard P. Bennett, 28, deserted his late-night patrol to visit a gentleman’s club where adult film star Bridget “The Midget” Powers — billed as “the world’s smallest porn star” — was performing last month.

Bennett was in uniform at the time of his visit to Club Alex’s in Stoughton and was reported to authorities by at least five other officers, said Stoughton Police Chief Paul Shastany.

He then reportedly lied about the visit during an internal investigation into the incident, the Patriot Ledger reported.

“Mama told me there would be days like this,” Shastany said, on confirming Bennett’s resignation. “We are not red-faced. In fact, I am pretty proud [other officers] stepped up.”

Bennett, who last month received a commendation for his work in a March murder case, resigned on June 30 rather than face disciplinary action, Shastany said.

Don Mattingly’s Gaffe Costs L.A. Dearly
7/21/2010 3:12 AM ET By Jeff Fletcher
    Jeff Fletcher
    Senior MLB Writer
Bruce Bochy helped the Giants win a game on Tuesday night, either by simply being alert or by exploiting a rule. Whatever your perspective, the events of the ninth inning of the Giants’ 7-5 victory over the Dodgers will prompt plenty of debate.

Dodgers hitting coach Don Mattingly was managing because Joe Torre and bench coach Bob Schaefer had been ejected. The Giants, trailing 5-4 entering the ninth, were rallying against closer Jonathan Broxton, with runners at second and third and one out. The Dodgers had just walked Aubrey Huff to load the bases, and then Mattingly came to the mound for a conference.

Mattingly then took a couple steps toward the dugout before he stopped and returned to the mound for another few words. That brought Bochy out of his dugout to protest that Mattingly had essentially made two trips to the mound. Umpires caucused and eventually agreed.

Rule 8.06 is actually quite clear:
A manager or coach is considered to have concluded his visit to the mound when he leaves the 18-foot circle surrounding the pitcher’s rubber.Mattingly, who was going back to answer first baseman James Loney’s question about how deep to play, said plate umpire Adrian Johnson tried to warn him.

“I kind of had a feeling [it was a second trip] because Adrian was yelling ‘No, no, no. You can’t go back,’ as I turned to talk to James,” he said. “It cost us a chance to win the game.”

Coincidentally, Bochy nailed former Dodgers’ manager Grady Little for the same infraction when Bochy was managing the Padres in 2006.

“It’s an easy mistake to make. I saw it once he went back to say a few more words,” Bochy said of the Mattingly incident.

The Dodgers had to pull Broxton. George Sherrill, who was recently put on outright waivers and cleared them, entered, and he gave up a two-run double to Andres Torres. Travis Schlichting entered and gave up an RBI hit to Buster Posey, for a Giants insurance run. The Giants went on to win a game that they had trailed 5-1 after five innings.

Not only was it the Dodgers’ sixth consecutive loss, but it was an unfortunate mishap for Mattingly, who has considered himself a manager-in-waiting.

San Francisco- Mercedes Lindsay is going to represent United States of America in the upcoming Miss USA Pageant, that will be held in the coming spring. She is the girlfriend of Jason Campbell, the Washington Redskins quarterback. Really. There is nothing elusive about the whole issue, because Jason Campbell is not on of those athletes who keep their personal life so away from the eye of the public that there is nothing available on it other than speculation. Also, it gets rather difficult to keep ones romantic life away from prying eyes if both involved are celebrities.

The Washington Redskins quarterback, Jason Campbell, has been with his girlfriend, Mercedes Lindsay, since the winter of 2006. The two had met a couple of times in the downtown area of Washington D.C. Jason Campbell reminisces that in the beginning, she had refused to go out with him despite the fact that he had asked her repeatedly. However, at the end, she had gone out with him, on a date in which he had forgotten to bring his wallet and Mercedes Lindsay had to pay for everything. Then, he goes on to joke that she might well have been stalking him before they went out.

The three year long affair continues to this day, and is still going strong. Mercedes Lindsay is going to participate in the Miss USA pageant this year, an event organized by Donald Trump. The same pageant had also crowned the girlfriend of Jason Campbell, the quarterback of the Washington Redskins, Mercedes Lindsay, the winner of the Miss USA Columbia in the year 2007.

As the NCAA continues its suddenly comprehensive attempt to clean up a mess that has been languishing on the carpet for years, one former NFL coach turned Alabama coach, who famously said he wouldn’t be the Alabama coach, is coming close to calling for college football programs to freeze out the NFL, if the pro game can’t keep agents from paying players.

“What the NFL Players Association and the NFL need to do is if any agent breaks a rule and causes ineligibility for a player, they should suspend his [agent's] license for a year or two,” Nick Saban told ESPN.com, via CFT. “I’m about ready for college football to say, ‘Let’s just throw the NFL out. Don’t let them evaluate players. Don’t let them talk to players. Let them do it at the combine.’ If they are not going to help us, why should we help them?”

Saban is upset because the Tide could be the latest program to possibly get rolled by the NCAA. Alabama currently is looking into whether defensive end Marcel Dareus blew his eligibility by “taking his talents to South Beach” earlier this summer for a party hosted by an agent.

Saban has picked a valid target, but the aim is wrong. If an agent pays a player, he’s already subject to punishment. The problem is that, previously, neither the NCAA nor the NFLPA did anything to enforce the rules. With the Reggie Bush case prompting an epiphany for the NCAA, the next logical step will be for the union to stand up and take action against agents who pay players before their eligibility ends.

Of course, full and complete and consistent enforcement of that rule could mean that not many agents would be left.

“Right now, agents are screwing it up,” Saban said. “They are taking the eligibility of players. It’s not right that those players do the wrong thing. We have a great education process here. We have a full-time worker who meets with players and their families and does everything else.”

Saban’s threat should get the league’s attention. Pro football teams, as Saban knows, tiptoe on eggshells to cater to college coaches, given that NCAA football provides a free farm system for the NFL. If more coaches begin to call for the NFL to be cut off, the league’s scouting efforts will suffer.

And so the league needs to lean on the union to police the agents. As if the league and the union didn’t already have enough issues between them.

  464. J Wiggle Says:

I suspect that wont be the case though.

Raiders spurn LA fans, cancel signing at Universal City Walk

Every year since the Raider Image opened at the Universal City Walk, they have had an autograph signing for the fans in Southern California. And for the first time, it was canceled.

Normally the signing happens the first week of June which is the anniversary of the opening of the City Walk Raider Image. This year’s even was supposed to be extra special as they were celebrating their 10th anniversary. Initially the event was pushed back to July 26th. The news that went with the postponing of the signing was good because instead of a simple autograph signing, it was going to be an all-day event with several more festivities added to the celebration.

The Raiders still have a large fan base in Los Angeles after winning a Super Bowl as the LA Raiders in 1984 and spending 13 years there from 1982 to 1995. The signing event at this Raider Image is one of the few that are held annually in the area. And this year’s event had a great number of those fans extremely excited about what the Raiders had in store.

But in the end, instead of an extra special day, it turns out it won’t be happening at all.

I contacted the Raider Image about the event and they were unable to offer any information as to what was planned or why it was canceled. In fact, they seemed especially unwilling to give out any information that I didn’t already have.

There could very well be a good reason for the cancellation for all the fans know. And they deserve an apology at very least. Rather than simply being left high and dry, without an appearance by their favorite players, a rescheduling or an explanation.

Guests for the signing in recent years have included stars like Michael Huff and Thomas Howard along with appearances by Raider Legends Jim Otto and Greg Townsend.

Raider fans are optimistic and excited about the upcoming season more than they have been in many years so there no doubt would have been a tremendous turn-out. But instead, Raider fans in the Los Angeles area are given the shaft without such as an apology.

Fans want to see this exciting and potentially great team. Now is the time to get these Raiders in front of the fans, signing autographs and reaching out. That is how you create new generations of fans. Not alienating them. Yet another giant missed opportunity.

Kevin Kolb was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the second round (36th overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft. He was the third quarterback taken in the draft behind JaMarcus Russell (1st overall) and Brady Quinn (22nd overall).

Last year Kolb became the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for more than 300 yards in each of his first two career starts. Kolb was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week after his efforts against the Chiefs.

Kolb expressed his desire to be the starting quarterback for the Eagles during the 2010 offseason: “Obviously my goal is to be the starter and to start for 16 games and to lead this team as far as we can go. Personally, I don’t have a lot of personal goals right now, they’re more team-oriented, besides me getting on the field and proving I can take over this thing.” On March 26, Adam Schefter reported that the Eagles expect Kolb to be the starting quarterback for the 2010 season. On April 4, McNabb was traded to the Washington Redskins, making Kolb the starting quarterback. Kolb signed a one-year contract extension worth $12.25 million on April 29, keeping him under contract with the Eagles through the 2011 season.

Kolb married his wife Whitney Huddleston in February 2007; they reside in Woolwich Township, New Jersey, just outside of suburban Philadelphia. Whitney gave birth to their first child, a daughter named Kamryn June, on January 10, 2009. Their second child, a daughter named Atley Rose, was born in April 2010.

Kolb majored in business entrepreneurship at the University of Houston.

Kolb is an avid hunter; he hunts wild hogs with a couple of dogs and a 12-inch Bowie knife. He asserts that controlling the hog population is an essential part of protecting his hometown’s crops. “One hog can ruin an entire field of crops in just one night. They dig up and eat the roots. They need to be controlled,” says Kolb.

Tiger Woods is still in first place in the latest Harris Interactive poll to determine America’s favorite sports star. But for the first time since 2006, he has to share the title. Kobe Bryant moved up from last year’s fourth-place finish to share to the top spot in the poll released today. From the Associated Press:

    Lawrence Taylor

You don’t condone single guys setting up dates via craig’s list?

  483. RaiderRockstar Says:

The Toronto Raptors thought they were close to acquiring Matt Barnes via sign-and-trade, but apparently somebody didn’t do their homework, causing the deal to go through. With no cap space left to sign Barnes, no Bird rights (or even early Bird rights), and the inability to use salary cap exceptions to sign him and subsequently trade him, the Magic are a pretty improbable sign-and-trade partner.

With Toronto stalled, a few more teams will have a chance to lure away Barnes, despite the fact that he doesn’t seem to mind playing for the Raptors next season. According to Marc Stein of ESPN.com, though the Raptors remain interested and are exploring more ways to acquire Barnes, the Cleveland Cavaliers, Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers, and Miami Heat will all be continuing their negotiations with the swingman.

  485. RaiderRockstar Says:

Taylor was arrested on May 6, 2010 for allegedly having sex with a 16-year-old girl inside a Montebello, New York Holiday Inn Hotel. He has been charged with third-degree statutory rape which is a felony, for allegedly engaging in sexual intercourse with someone under 17 while being over 21. Taylor has also been charged with third-degree patronization for allegedly paying the underage victim $300 to have sex with him. His bail was set at $75,000. His lawyer Arthur Aidala has stated “My client did not have sex with anybody. Period…Lawrence Taylor did not rape anybody.” Taylor is facing up to five years in prison and life time sex offender registration if convicted of both crimes. On June 23, 2010, Taylor was indicted of these charges. He plead not guilty on July 13, 2010

    Jwigg: you’re ok with this?

  486. RaiderRockstar Says:

    Jwigg: you have a daughter

if some scumbag athlete with money tried to lure her in (under age!), i’m sure you’d have a different opinion

  487. lefty12 Says:

Can’t condone what Taylor did but there was no luring. She had a pimp and supposedly told him she was over 18.

  488. lefty12 Says:

Should the Raiders set up autograph sessions in Podunk,MO also as we know there is at least 1 huge fan there?

  489. bcz24 Says:

I agree lefty… dont condone what Taylor did, but he wasnt “luring” anyone anywhere. She was there of her own accord under the illusion that she WAS 18. She certainly did not tell LT she was 16 prior to engaging him. Whether or not any sex occured will be decided by the courts, but lets not paint this young prostitute as the victim here. She may be a victim of circumstance regarding whatever caused to enter the life of a hooker, but not a victim of LT.

The chick was a prostitute with a pimp who he hooked up with off a well known hook up site.

It’s not like he was chatting her up and pretended to be something he wasn’t.

    I hardly see the comparison.

  491. RaiderRockstar Says:

Jwigg: you guys need to go check out LT’s rap sheet.

also explain to me why it’s ok for a married man to seek a pimp for a prostitute thats young enough to be his daughter

I doubt any Raiders would come to Podunk, but they might come to KC or STL for a game … I have yet to visit Arrowhead Stadium or Edward Jones Dome, but it’s certainly a possibility in the near future

I want to see my Raiders win a few games before I drive 7-8 hours round trip and spend money on tix to watch us get beat down by an awful team

  493. Jonesy941 Says:

why would we lose to a crappy team in there own stadium much less a division rival? thats unheard of!
