Camp questions: Will we see T.O.?

Eighth in a series analyzing quesitons and issues regarding the Raiders with players reporting to training camp in Napa a week from today:

Is it possible the Raiders will bring aboard Terrell Owens?

Columnist Monte Poole thinks so, and made his case in today’s Bay Area News Group publications.

If that argument sounds vaguely familiar, I wrote pretty much the same thing back on March 11.

If Monte thinks something, chances are pretty good the Raiders are thinking the opposite. The two sides have a special relationship that way.

And while the Raiders and I were on the same page on draft day with the selection of Rolando McClain, two developments in the offseason made it a lot less likely they would bring in Owens.

The first was an improvement in Darrius Heyward-Bey, last year’s No. 7 overall pick. While the second-year receiver still has to prove it during live contact, as well as during preseason and regular season games, there was a marked difference in the way he performed during minicamps and organized team activities open to the media.

The second was the appearance of Chaz Schilens during the last OTA open to the media. Schilens underwent a second surgery for on a broken fifth metatarsal on his left foot following the season, and the Raiders had to be at least a little nervous about him holding up. Coach Tom Cable originally said Schilens wouldn’t be ready to go until training camp, so he’s ahead of schedule.

I’m guessing that at this point the Raiders want to fully develop their young corps of receivers, which includes Louis Murphy, and won’t do anything to cut into their playing time by bringing in Owens.

As I mentioned on my on-line chat Tuesday, the best chance of seeing Owens would be if one of those three players were to be injured and out for a prolonged length of time.

That’s probably the game Owens is playing now _ waiting and watching to see if a team loses a receiver during training camp.

Previous camp questions:

Can less be more for Cable?

Can the starting linebackers hold up in coverage?

How good is Mike Mitchell?

Can Mario be super?

Can Higgins return to ’08 form?

Where is Seymour’s ripple effect?

Can Bush be a beast?

Bush should get a lot more carries this year.

Darren might transfer some of his touches into more catches and less carries, and no way is Rock or Bennett going to get all of Fargas’ 200 carries.

Wouldn’t be suprised if Bush gets 300 carries.

Academy Award-winning actor Robert De Niro is attached to play legendary coach Vince Lombardi in the theatrical motion picture “Lombardi” being developed by ESPN Films, Andell Entertainment and the NFL. Additionally, Academy Award-winning screenwriter Eric Roth (Forrest Gump, The Good Shepherd) has come on board the project, which will chronicle Lombardi during the years he transformed the Green Bay Packers from the worst team in the National Football League into five-time NFL champions.

“Having an icon portray an icon on film is amazing,” said Ron Semiao, senior vice president of ESPN Films, “and with a writer as talented as Eric working on the script, the results could be magical for NFL fans.”

Current plans call for the film’s release on the weekend between the AFC and NFC Conference Championships and the Super Bowl in 2012

NCAA Investigates Florida & South Carolina, Alabama Investigates Alabama, Alleged Facebook Violations and Michigan’s Still a Mess
by Annapolisbuckeye on July 20, 2010

Now that USC is returning Reggie Bush’s Heisman Trophy, it seems like everyone is jumping on the NCAA violation bandwagon. The biggest accusation at the moment involves Florida first round draft pick Maurkice Pouncey who has been accused of accepting $100,000 from a NFL agent before the Sugar Bowl. If he is found guilty, Florida could be forced to forfeit the Sugar Bowl giving Cinci an undefeated season.

Hmm…first he resigns, then he’s back…sound familiar Pete Carroll?

The NCAA is also taking a look at tight end Wesley Saunders who may have joined players from UNC (also under investigation) in a trip to Florida funded by NFL agents.

Meanwhile, in an attempt to stave off the NCAA dogs, Alabama is looking into a party thrown by NFL agents which was attended by Alabama defensive end Marcell Dareus. Same party? I don’t know. Whatever the case, Alabama coach Nick Sabin hit it on the head when he said,

What the NFL Players Association and the NFL need to do is if any agent breaks a rule and causes ineligibility for a player, they should suspend his (agent’s) license for a year or two,” Saban said. “I’m about ready for college football to say, ‘Let’s just throw the NFL out. Don’t let them evaluate players. Don’t let them talk to players. Let them do it at the combine.’ If they are not going to help us, why should we help them?”

I’ve got to agree with him. If the agents don’t play by the rules, get them out of the picture.

But wait, that’s not all. Florida and Ole Miss are both in trouble for violating Facebook etiquette. Apparently it’s against NCAA rules for coaches to post comments to recruits Facebook page and that’s exactly what they did. Both are “secondary violations.”

Facebook violations…did I just say that?

Finally, in case you missed it, Michigan’s Brad Labadie, director of football operations, has resigned taking the fall for the NCAA’s investigation into the UM football program. Supposedly Labadie was responsible for keeping better records than he did. Funny, I thought Rodriguez was all about burning players records.

“With Cable out of the picture”-what an idiotic statement. He is the HEAD COACH,and I for 1 am glad about that.I know there are those that don’t like that, but think about it-if he wasn’t HC there is a good chance Russell would still be the QB.You may disapprove of the play calling under him,but he is responsible for the culture improvement of the team-like it or not.

  • Dude

    Culture improvement??

  • lefty12

“I hope Cable can coach up V.,C. & Henderson, they will succeed ….”-the job of coaching up the players is the position and assistant coaches not the head coach. And Henderson is 30 something years old with years of NFL exp.-he should be helping the younger guys, not need the HC to coach him up.

    ========

    With out a doubt.

Offense and D are going to be varied and dynamic.

We could actually see just how ham strung this offense might have been because of he who shall remain unemployed.

  • lefty12

That is correct Dude-No more knuckleheads. No more drug addicts. No more sleeping through meetings. No more being late for meetings and not being held accountable. No more……..

  • Nnamdi21

It ALL depends on the O line.

  • Nnamdi21

Look, with 2 league scrubs at the helm and a patch work O line this team competed and won last year.

    Just sayin’…

  • Raider E

I assume your referring to John Henderson, Lefty. Mario is only 25 years old bro.

  • lefty12

I don’t hold Gradkowski in such low regards as many on here, but I do wonder if it is because the guy he replaced was so terrible that anyone who replaced him would have looked decent(as Jhill and others said) or he did seem to show something when he was allowed to take over.

  • Raider E

If you watched that Raiders/Ravens game again it is painfully obvious that we had a very good chance of winning if not for “Mr. Lean”.

  • lefty12

Thanks E,I forgot about him and obviously that is who S&B was talking about.I stand corrected.

  • Raider E

The only thing Grads showed is how bad Russell really is.

  • Raider E

Grads got a couple breaks in that Pittsburg game. Frye looked like an All Pro in the first half against the Ravens compared to Russell in the second half. It gives a whole new meaning to the phrase ” He makes everyone around him better”

  • lefty12

While that may true,I believe he showed more than that.He showed he is a good leader and capable of more than just competing. While he may never be a great QB,he showed he is capable of leading a team when thrust into action.
