Brown signed, McClain, Houston remain
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, July 22nd, 2010 at 4:48 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders announced the signing of Michigan safety Stevie Brown, taken in the seventh round of the draft.
All that remains are the top two picks _ Alabama linebacker Rolando McClain and Texas defensive tackle Lamarr Houston.
Houston said in a phone interview he was leaving negotiations up to his agent (Jordan Woy) but expected to be in uniform and practicing when the Raiders hold a double session a week from today.
Although the NFL released the Raiders reporting date as July 28, players actually arrive a day earlier, on Tuesday, and will spend Wednesday in a series of meetings in preparation for the first practices.
Coach Tom Cable will speak to the media Wednesday.
Dallas wide receiver Dez Bryant is the only wide receiver to have signed so far. Last year at this time, just two first-round picks had signed.
As the No. 8 overall pick, McClain can expect a contract roughly equivalent to last year’s No. 7 selection, Darrius Heyward-Bey. Heyward-Bey received $23.5 million in guaranteed money.

Let’s get this show on the road! I need my football fix & I don’t mean soccer.
July 22nd, 2010 at 5:16 pm
I think 10-6 is a real possibility this year. Barring key injuries, I fully expect Oakland to be he AFC-West champs this upcoming season.

Couple of things from last post:
1. Bruce Gradkowski is a backup QB. One game does not make a man. If he was the man, the Raiders don’t go pay Campbell $4M a year for 2 years. Gradkowski may be a good backup. Again, two games in the season mean NOTHING!
2. Is Tommy Kelly in the Haloti Ngata class? Kevin or Pat Williams? Kris Jenkins? Wilfork? Abrayo Franklin? OF COURSE NOT! Raider fan has a tendancy to OVERRATE its own talent. Kelly is just another guy out there on the field making a kings ransom
July 22nd, 2010 at 5:24 pm
LB Groves is a question mark. So is Trevor Scott for that matter.
Thomas Howard just tweeted he and LANE KIFFIN are now twitter buddies.
Looks like you’re the next guy outa Oakland Howard!
July 22nd, 2010 at 5:26 pm
7. Word.
Grads is a scrub who couldn’t make any other team AS A BACK UP.
Kelly had ONE good year his CONTRACT year AND blew his knee out doing it.
Step up, or step off…
July 22nd, 2010 at 5:28 pm
i know signings have to be reported or at the very leasted noted, but i swear… some “news” outlets treat every signing like breaking news and nonsignings as some sort of hostage situation. wake me up when hitting starts…

Breakouts:
Matt Stafford
Michael Crabtree
Michael Bush
Letdowns:
Kevin Kolb
Darren McFadden
Randy Moss

Team Letdowns:
Chargers/Eagles/Patriots

Nnamdi21,
Gradkowski gets a lot of support because he was a breathe of fresh air to the JaDavis debacle.
So many teams make the mistake of playing some marginal/backup QB based on a game or two….the history books are littered with QBs like that. Gradkowski is a competitor and that’s good. But he has no accuracy, nor has he ever displayed that he is accurate. LEt him compete…I AM ALWAYS FOR COMPETITION…but as an observer…I don’t see him as any more than a backup….and the league sees him the same way too.
July 22nd, 2010 at 5:45 pm
Nnamdi21,
If Tommy Kelly was not making big bucks…I don’t think anyone would complain. But when you pay the big money two things happen:
1. Hurt cap space without getting the return
2. Make filling the position with a better player more difficult.
Kelly is an average player that SHOULD be a candidate to be upgraded through trade or the draft. But his BIG, BLOATED contract prevents that.
He’s just another guy. Hopefully he puts it together
July 22nd, 2010 at 5:46 pm
I just want Grads to compete for the job.
If he sucks it will show, and we will all move on. But many are afraid to let him compete, why is that so?
People say it was only two games, but he scored more points against Dallas on the road on a short week, than Campbell put up in two games against Dallas.
How many good weeks did Campbell have last year? Not a whole lot more than Bruce.
July 22nd, 2010 at 5:49 pm
This will be a good season. We need our offense to above avg, and I think our Defense can do the rest. Top 12 defense!!
8-8, maybe 9-7.
Next year, if there is a season, we can win the AFC West!!
Go Raiders!!!!
Thank you Al Davis!!
July 22nd, 2010 at 5:51 pm
JFB,
So many QBs have had a good game or two….even JaDavis…..its the long-haul man.
If you are the Raiders, there is no way you go into 2010 with Gradkowski as the leading QB going into camp. That would not be responsible.
The saddest person in the lockerroom when JaDavis was cut…was Gradkowski and not JaDavis….JaDavis was happy to do his Purple Drank full-time..Gradkowski knew he lost a GUARANTEED opportunity to be starting by week 3.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Gradkowski was the one actually PUSHING JaDavis to get in shape for camp…LOL
July 22nd, 2010 at 5:57 pm
What long-haul has Jason proven?
That Todd Collins wins more games than him? That his team is better with him on the bench than on the field? That he is a pretty much a 1-1 TD-turnover QB? That he turned the #7 ranked defense in a 4-12 team?
I would RATHER see what any young QB or unproven one at least has before seeing JC. We know what he is, a middle-of-the-road NFL QB. You can always go back to that, let’s see what we may have in Bruce by letting him start a preseason game and see if he is better or worse. If he is worse than you put that to bed. You don’t just bury him on the bench for no reason, that makes zero sense to me.
July 22nd, 2010 at 5:58 pm
SNBODS: Right awn mang.
July 22nd, 2010 at 6:00 pm
Campbell has played in 52 games, has 55 TD’s and 50 turnovers, and a 38 winning %, even though his team made the playoffs twice during his tenure.
I don’t get the Campbell love. Let Bruce, JC, hell even Frye and Boller battle it out.
July 22nd, 2010 at 6:04 pm
You say nobody would go into the season with Bruce as the unquestioned starter, and you are 100% right.
But the same is true for JC. We gave up a 4th round pick for him in 2012!! We basically traded Arman Shields for him.
Nobody wanted him either as a starter, and really as a guy to compete for the gig, but us. Is Al Davis really ahead of everybody in the NFL on this one? I doubt it, the league knows what Campbell is, and they passed, and would rather see what some unproven guy has.
July 22nd, 2010 at 6:08 pm
JFB,
Gradkowski is not a young unproven QB. He’s been in this league since 2006. As Jerry pointed out, he’s been bounced around the league and was fortunate that the JaDavis debacle in training camp drove Garcia to retire. Gradkowski is no rookie draftpick…he’s never been a full-time starter….pretty much a journeyman from start…and the guy that brought him in gave up on him.
No freekn way he gets the keys.
Jason Campbell? Sure he’s got question marks, any QB you get in a trade or free agency is going to have them…however, someone gave him the keys….and let him play as the starter….he has put up statistics in over 52 starts that SUGGEST he is capable of doing some good things…there are enough question marks with the Redskins (coaching carousel, crappy line, marginal receivers) that suggest a change of scenery could be the difference and he has the physical and mental attitude to, again, suggest he COULD get it done.
Also, the Raiders felt the same way. Otherwise they would have rolled with BG
Bruce Gradkowski? All he has is two games. That’s it.
July 22nd, 2010 at 6:10 pm
I think the trade compensation for JC was determined more on the fact the league knew he was done once Was got McNabb. Not based on his ability.
July 22nd, 2010 at 6:13 pm
I’ll take two wins out of three with the 27th ranked defense over 4 out of 16 with the 7th ranked defense.
Call me crazy if you must.
July 22nd, 2010 at 6:17 pm
Midwest,
That very well could be true, but that would still mean that he was available for a discount…..and nobody bit.

======================================================
As I said, any QB you get in free agency/trade will have question marks:
Drew Brees….30-28 80TDS & 77 Turnovers with San Diego and 1 playoff appearance (with LT in his prime)
I would also say that Brees and Campbell probably have a similiar work ethic and mentality….
No gurarantees…but I’ll roll with Campbell 100x over a fringe NFL talent like Gradkowski
July 22nd, 2010 at 6:20 pm
SnB,
No consideration for the fact that JC put up 6 combined points in two games against Dallas, with a full week of rest and a home game, while Bruce put up 7 points in a short week on the road?
July 22nd, 2010 at 6:23 pm
I think JFB is right here. You can’t hide the fact that JC only won 4 games with a 7th ranked D.
SNB, you’re a bit too enamored with Jason and over look the obvious. Jason’s stats didnt associate his team with winnings. I’m sure it’s more than Jason. I’m sure that idiot coach they had was also the problem.
The key thing here is you should stop being enamored with Jason while bashing Bruce. They all should get a fair share to start. I wished Al Davis would stop meddling with picking who the starter is already. JC needs to earn his spot like BG and the rest of the gang.
Either way, we’re better off this year than last.
July 22nd, 2010 at 6:26 pm
Where the Chargers better when Brees wasn’t playing?
A winning record and a playoff appearance is a lot different than the JC record in Washington.
I just want a competition, a fair one. Can we at least let Bruce start ONE preseason game and see what happens. One freaking game isn’t going to stunt JC’s growth, and is worth the risk-record with the slight chance Bruce is going to have a good 4-5 year run.
That’s all I’m getting at. Aaron Brooks had way better stats and winning records before he came here than JC did. We saw how that turned out.
July 22nd, 2010 at 6:26 pm
Here is one thing that gets overlooked with the QB position…Leadership.
Bruce has shown that he has it and commands respect on the field. I dont ever remember a moment where I saw JC getting fired up on the field.
I could be wrong but never saw that.
July 22nd, 2010 at 6:33 pm
BTW, I have loved everything that Campbell has done so far in Silver and Black. You can’t ask for anything more at this stage.
But inking him in as a 16 game starter is foolish at this stage as well. Shorts and red-jerseys are a lot different than pads and defenses.
Let’s just wait and see how it all turns out can’t we? Hell Bruce could get hurt again and go on IR. Campbell could turn it around and be a leader and a winner. Boller could resurrect his career coming in week 7 and winning games.
People talk a lot of crazy stuff on here, DHB will breakout for 1,000 yards, McFadden is going to have 1,200 yards rushing, our defense is going to be top 10, but BG winning the starting gig…… NOOOO WAY!!!
Too funny.
July 22nd, 2010 at 6:35 pm
JFB,
Things got so bad in Washington this past year that they brought Sherman Lewis in to call the plays whle leaving Zone twisting in the wind in a Davisesque sort of way.
That team last year was bad. Their line, worse than ours….and few people blamed Campbell for the problems….more of the problem was on the Head Coach and Owner (sound familiar)
bottom line…there is risk WITH ANY FREE AGENT/TRADE QB!…..but if you evaluate this thing and can honestly say that Bruce Gradkowski and two freekn games is a more viable option than Campbell and his 3500 yds passing and 60%+ completion %…then have at it.
But if you asked 64 GM’s and Coaches who would be the lead QB and most likely the starter between Bruce Gradkowski and JAson Campbell…I am going to guess that the OVERWHELMING MAJORITY go with Campbell.
There is a reason why people think this team will be competent this year…and it starts with the QB.
July 22nd, 2010 at 6:43 pm
I’m not saying that Bruce is better than Campbell, or that Campbell is better than Bruce. I don’t know until I see it on the field.
I size it up as one is a good backup the other a shyty starter. Pick your poison.
July 22nd, 2010 at 6:45 pm
what are you guys talking about grads was only known for his accuracy but not to much arm strength what the hell do you guys know? not to much as he was drafted by Gruden who most of you dumb a$$e$ want back Gruden thought he was all that and a bag of chips in college grads was a bad mofo. he just did not have good size and arm strength so people stop pulling crap out your arse just to say something.
July 22nd, 2010 at 6:49 pm
JFB,
The season the Redskins went to the playoffs…the Redskins got in with a 9-7 record.
J.C won 6 lost 7
Collins won the last 3 gms of the season to get them to the playoffs….then lost in a wildcard loss to the Seahawks.
Collins statistics in his 3 wins
Gm 1: 8 of 25 166 yds 0 TDs 0 INTs
Gm 2: 22 of 29 254 yds 2 TDs 0 INTs (Portis threw 1 too)
Gm 3: 22 of 31 244 1TD 0INTs (against a Cowboy team that was resting its players for playoffs)
Playoff: 29 of 50 266yds 2TD 2INt (in 35 to 14 loss)
Inconclusive…hard to suggest that it would have been unlikely or impossible that Campbell could have duplicated that effort. Oh, and that was Campbell’s 1st year as a starter.
July 22nd, 2010 at 6:52 pm
if campbell does not work out witch i really hope does i would love grads come in he has all the intangibles leadership, love for the game, works hard and doesn’t give up and the team love him and rally around him. i mean look at gannon won an mvp he was not tall fast did not have a strong arm at all but look what he accomplished. with only great intangibles and accuracy witch grads has. i know 54% passes complete but think how many were dropped game after game by our wr’s

JFB,
I don’t hate Gradkowski at all by the way. Was backing him last year when the team played well in the couple of games he played.
But after the season…time to take a step back and take a sobering look at this thing…I just do not think this guy is a 12 to 16 game guy that can be a difference maker. But I like his attitude and the energy he brings….if he truly is starter quality…he should prove it on the field and demonstrate he is a much better choice…demonstrably so.
Thing is…Campbell works just as hard as Gradkowski, is a leader…has flashed greatness…AND has some 50 starts behind him.
Regardless, Gradkowski should push Campbell…and Campbell is already bustin his azz.
Its all good.
Enjoyed the chat on Raider football. Looking forward to the season….

2 games into the season with Grads and you’ll be screaming for the backup…trust me. That kid is easy to scout and defend, yeah he can dink and dunk you to death but in the end physical big teams will overwhelm him. The blogger has selective memory. KC was garbage we should’ve dominated them. The Cincy game consisted of one drive worth talking about. To be honest Grads had one great qrtr of football vs the Steelers in the th qrtr the rest was average at best.
The best game any QB played for the Raiders last year was the first game of the year vs SD when Russell should’ve walked away with a come from behind win. The second was the Steeler game we won on the road. I say that because even in that game Gards was more lucky than good while Russell was robbed. JMHO
I’m so damn glad the kid aint starting and the Raiders had the foresight to get a better QB instead of allowing one qrtr of football to blind them.

Whats Up Nation. I am so glad the workouts and preseason s coming . I wanna see the two lines and how they play. Thats the key to the silva and black. I am from DC and I am a jason campbell fan. Give him time and let me tell you he played on bad offensive line worse than the raiders. The redskins defense if you watched the games put them in a whole against the giants and dallas. I remember hainsworth taking himself out on the first goalline td by dallas. I have been a raiderfan since 1980. Lets enjoy this ride because if Al goes the raiderway goes to. Im scared of the corporate run raiders years from now.

Sunday & Monday will be devoted to McClain.

The Lakers got better at the wing by signing Matt Barnes on Thursday night. The Lakers could offer only $1.7 million this year, next year it would be $1.9 million but Barnes will have an opt out.
Barnes turned down more money, a reported $3.5 million a year for three years from Cleveland. He certainly would have gotten more playing time. But if Barnes was not going to play for a contender, he wanted even more money.
Barnes is coming home — he went to UCLA in college, where he may have been a better wide receiver than a basketball player. Maybe not, but it was pretty close.
The Lakers will now bring Barnes off the bench on the wing, spelling Ron Artest and Kobe Bryant, giving the Lakers some toughness and defense off the bench. Barnes is not a good a defender as his reputation, he shot only 32 percent from three last season. But he plays within himself, can attack the rim, get out and run and makes good decisions.
He also fits with the Lakers theme of versatility. They like guys who can play multiple positions, allowing them to create a host of matchup problems. Barnes can play the two or the three. He is long and athletic.
If the Lakers had a weakness last season, it was that their bench was Lamar Odom and a prayer. Now Steve Blake will come in and be a step up at the one from Fisher, and Barnes can come in at the wing, while Odom will be the four. Basically, the Lakers are eight deep with really good players, plus they have Luke Walton and Sasha Vujacic.

According to the Associate Press, free agent point guard Carlos Arroyo has decided to re-sign with the Miami Heat.
This isn’t a huge signing for the Heat, although it does give them some much-needed depth in their backcourt. The 30-year old Arroyo has always been talented, but never quite lived up to the promise he showed during the 03-04 season and the 2004 Olympics.
Arroyo is a gifted playmaker, capable of seeing angles that few other point guards can see and making bold passes without taking unnecessary risks. Unfortunately, Arroyo’s scoring game has never been up to par, his defense is an issue, and he tends to dribble too much while looking to make a play. Because of all that, Arroyo has already changed teams seven times in his career.
Playing alongside of LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh, and everyone else in Miami will be an interesting test for Arroyo: will having great teammates around him allow Arroyo to flourish as a pure passer, or are Arroyo’s bad habits impossible to get rid of at this point in his career? Only time will tell, but Arroyo is definitely more talented than most players available at a bargain-basement price.

With Phillip Merling out for the year, Fins could go after Marcus Spears
Posted by Mike Florio (PFT)
We reported earlier today that Dolphins defensive end Phillip Merling has an Achilles’ tendon injury. Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports that Merling will miss the entire season due to the injury.
Jackson also reports that the injury was suffered during football-related activities, which means that Merling will receive the full amount of his $600,000 base salary, if/when he lands on injured reserve.
Of course, that amount could be reduced if/when Merling is suspended by the league for violating the Personal Conduct Policy. He faces felony charges after allegedly beating up his pregnant girlfriend.
Salguero also reports that the Dolphins may eventually make a play for Cowboys defensive end Marcus Spears. Selected by Dolphins V.P. of football operations Bill Parcells in the first round of the 2005 draft while Parcells was working as head coach of the Cowboys, Spears could be on the outs in Dallas. Which could put him on the ins in Miami.

Heyward-Bey will make $21.505 million this season in salary, bonuses, endorsements and appearance fees.
Why so much? Because Oakland used some creative accounting last year and the rookie was not paid a signing bonus, pushing this year’s salary in an uncapped year to $21.43 million.

I went fishing last weekend but after a short time I ran out of worms. Then I saw a cottonmouth with a frog in his mouth. Frogs are good bass bait.
Knowing the snake coulldn’t bite me with the frog in his mouth, I grabbed him right behind the head, took the frog, and put it in my bait bucket.
Now the dilemma was how to release the snake without getting bit. So, I grabbed my bottle of Jack Daniels and poured a little whiskey in its mouth. His eyes rolled back, he went limp. I released him into the lake without incident and carried on fishing using the frog.
A little later, I felt a nudge on my foot. There was that same snake with two more frogs in his mouth.

Not surprised that a lot of first round deals haven’t been done, thanks to the CBA (we can thank the agents for that, as well – those bastards!) Anyway, I feel certain that both RoMac and Houston will be in camp and that the Raiders will be well on their way. I like Grads, but you gotta go with Campbell as your #1 … dude hasn’t had a lot of breaks in Washington (very few do, working for ‘ol Sny-dee – the spoiled brat of NFL owners). Grads brought a lot of fire and enthusiasm for a very brief period and then he got a lot of love from everybody. Reminds me of someone else who got a lot of love for a brief period, got signed by another team and inked a big fat contract. I have two words for you: Scott Mitchell.

The significance of that number (1741) — that was the year Benedict Arnold, the ultimate traitor in American history, was born. What a slap at Lebron!

What up RAIDERNATION!! I check this site like 5 times a day, and finally decided to register. I’m so hype for this season.
I’m cautiously optimistic this year, although we had a disappointing season last year imagine how I felt, watch the RAIDERS beat the Eagles at my boys house with a room full of hating Eagles fans, it felt like the Super Bowl haha. And then the same for the Steelers game!
Its good to be around fellow Silver and Black family!!
July 23rd, 2010 at 7:03 am
I know I can get Mclains # all ready but last time I did that I dropped about 100$ and Jprecious decided to hold out and think I wore it 1 then threw it away just like my Moss one to hell with goodwill !

11-5 and we win the division.
July 23rd, 2010 at 7:51 am
Looking forward to the Cowboys preseason game and whoever we play in game 3 at home. I want to see if we can stop the ‘Boys this year for the first few series and maybe get a score against their firsts. Dez Bryant should be interesting to watch going into the second half.
For some reason that Bears game does nothing for me.
July 23rd, 2010 at 7:56 am
BSJ, Jerry Buss wanted AD to build the Stadium at Hollywood Park. He would have then remodeled the Inglewood Forum. The NFL F’d AD by insisting on 2 teams in a new stadium. AD went back to Oakland and the Staples Center was built. Jerry Buss and AD had a great relationship.
July 23rd, 2010 at 8:00 am
You didn’t like our off season?
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
I always like our preseason. Its the seasons themselves that demand a GM. Plus, when Al gets too old who will be there to carry on? Herrera?
Have you forgotten these deals? Kelly, Javon, Gibril, DeAngelo, Jamarcus, DMAC, Kiffin, Lombardi, Culpepper, Condo, etc. etc. etc.

July 23rd, 2010 at 8:05 am
Wiggle, if Campbell performs as expected, the O-line improves, not only will we be 11-5, we will be in the Superbowl.
There seems to be real passion from the players. Players really believe and that counts a lot.
July 23rd, 2010 at 8:08 am
Yes!!!! Finally have our first “Superbowl” post. LOL! Signals the beginning of the football season when some brilliant Raider fan drops the “Superbowl” word on us.
July 23rd, 2010 at 8:09 am
Plus the talent level has improved. There are question marks, as always, but the team has a very good coaching staff, and the players have desire to improve and win. I read one statement from a NFL exec. who said no team wants to play the Raiders because they are a very talented team.
July 23rd, 2010 at 8:09 am
We have perhaps the two most wimpy – I mean “athletic” – centers in the league, yet we still have to use a roster spot on ANOTHER guy to long snap?

for the correction.
July 23rd, 2010 at 8:12 am
BSJ,
We have went over this before. In case you haven’t noticed lately, we don’t do many things well.
If we can be an excellent long-snapping team, I’ll take it. Baby steps my friend. When we start mastering the art of stopping the run and completing a 3rd and 8 pass, than we can move on to tackling the “waste” of a roster spot for a long-snapper.
July 23rd, 2010 at 8:12 am
BO, well we know Dude was not talking about you…LOL BSJ=ROCK!

NFL long snapper ???
July 23rd, 2010 at 8:16 am
Buss and AD are no longer close friends as Buss is majority owner of Anschutz Entertainment Group the group that wants to put a stadium in downtown L.A.
July 23rd, 2010 at 8:17 am
Elite NFL long-snapper.
What if our long-snapper was as good as our passing game or run defense?
July 23rd, 2010 at 8:18 am
I think it’s hilarious that long snapper is even considered a pro bowl eligible position.
July 23rd, 2010 at 8:20 am
That would freeze out A.D. Remember the lease extention for Oakland is for 2 years, effectively 1 if there is a lockout or strike. $5 mil penalty for breaking lease. AD loves leverage and will play off L.A. against Oakland to get a new Oakland venue. Past history proves it.
July 23rd, 2010 at 8:20 am

July 23rd, 2010 at 8:21 am

July 23rd, 2010 at 8:25 am

July 23rd, 2010 at 8:27 am
So your saying that being able to snap the ball to the punter is a skill worthy of a million dollars and a pro bowl slot?
I wonder what the other teams pay their long snapper?
July 23rd, 2010 at 8:29 am
The NFL minimum is like 300K, so at must Condo makes at $1 million more than other long-snappers.
That is peanuts in the grand scheme of things. Much bigger fish to fry.
I’m off to go save the world.
July 23rd, 2010 at 8:36 am
He should NOT be making a million dollars mayne!
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
He makes a lot more than that I fear.
July 23rd, 2010 at 8:37 am
Actually, being that Condo is a 6th year player, league minimum is $600,000. So 1 million is not really out of line at all
July 23rd, 2010 at 8:40 am
Condo’s salary is actually $1.684 million, but who cares… not like its hurting the cap situation.

so, if Samson snapped shotgun to Condo whereafter Condo turned his back to the line of scrimmage and long-snapped to a streaking Humuhumu-Bey for a TD (which I’m sure he could do as he is our LS extraordinaire)would that constitute a forward pass?
July 23rd, 2010 at 9:18 am
LOL. Only if HeyBeyBee held onto the ball Lonetree.
July 23rd, 2010 at 9:18 am
as for Bruce Campbell, even with his FB, TE, guard and tackle duties I would see him on kick-offs at the 20 yard line awaiting a pooched kick which he tucks away and then there will be hell to pay for whichever fool gets in his way.

It’s a great week-before-Camp to be a Raiders fan! Isn’t it?
If the Raiders are at least 2-2 after 4 games, and anywhere near .500 by mid-season, Cable and staff will be doing a great job. I think the staff believe they can get the job done, even believing in Cable.
Even in a “fair” competition for the starter’s job. Jason Campbell has a HUGE leg-up on Grads, taking into account his experience, ability, and the time he’s spent working/gelling with his new team this off-season. Timing is everything, and Grads is gonna be rusty. Also…Grads already doesn’t have a cannon arm when healthy — how’s he going to sling it, at least early on?
What Cable and Jason Campbell have in common is they both seem to have their TEAM believing in them. That’s huge, and that’s been missing for the longest time here. Everybody on the same page? Seems close to it, if not right on.
When McClain and Houston get on the field, the Defense will be dynamic all over the field. McClain is large, but his presence on the field might be even larger — he’s a real leader. If he’s relatively as athletic against the pros as he was against college players, he’s going to be a great LB for a long time.
A whole new energy is being brought by this newer, younger Raiders team. The players (and us fans) will really feel a difference in energy when this team realizes its potential.
It’s hard not to see the potential this team has, considering the amount of work they’ve put in, and the changes they’ve made.
Lots to be optimistic about!
July 23rd, 2010 at 10:53 am
8)…. it about time someone did anyone did “anything” 2 help the TEAM,Dakota!!!! lol!!!!!!!!!!!!
July 23rd, 2010 at 10:55 am
Hayes, every team in the NFL is coming into the season with a 0-0 record. The Raiders have a clean slate with a new look. A beefed up defense and a new QB…of course everyone is excited about this up coming season. I can’t remeber me being this optimistic since 2000-2001 campaign!
July 23rd, 2010 at 10:56 am
I got a feeling all of our youngins will do exceptionally well….DHB BABY!

I hope your right. I was born at Kaiser Hosp in Heyward and grew up in Alameda right in eyesight of the collseum. I can’t take the Raiders being this down for this long, Its messin with my mind. Another losing season or a few more draft busts and I might need to see a head doc or something.
July 23rd, 2010 at 10:58 am

The new O-Linemen will need to get good in a hurry. Gallery’s back, but how IS his back?? He’s so good now, and such a steadying influence on Mario, that he needs to be back 100%…and who really knows after back surgery?
If Gallery really is (and can stay) back, I predict he will be a longtime Raiders legend, spoken of like we speak of the greats today. His attitude, personality, and community attachment speak volumes about the guy. Gallery’s a classic Raiders player who might be great yet.
A healthy Gallery means the guys aren’t tossed around the line in patchwork pieces…and the young guys can learn their jobs that much quicker.
July 23rd, 2010 at 11:08 am
Glad to see all the regulars are back and posting. By the way, did the Rules Committee do anything with the yard markers that McFadden kept tripping over last year? I was hoping they would lower them.

My hope is they use DMC strictly ina Reggie Bush-esque capacity. Give Bush the ball and let him pound the defense. We all saw Bush’s problems with getting winded late in games, I think a healthy dose of the rock consistently, and it’ll will make him a better player mentally and physically.
What we NEED is a true FB, I’m not sure about the guys we have now..

New Panties
To spice up her dead sex-life. She puts them on, together with a short skirt and sits on the sofa opposite her husband.
At strategic moments she uncrosses her legs … enough times that her husband finally asks,
“Are you wearing crotchless panties?”
“Y-e-s,” she answers with a seductive smile.
“Thank God – I thought you were sitting on the cat.”
He never heard the gunshot.
Later Raider Nation !

Dancing in the streets was the scene in Oakland California as the Raiders finally unloaded JaMarcus [cough] Russell none too soon for Jason Campbell.
We know that has to be a three to four game improvement right there.
Without the point spreads involved I run about 80 percent correct most of the time, so this should be a simple breakdown of the Raiders season that will be fairly accurate.
In handicapping football games correctly, I have no favorites.
I spent four weeks on Week One of the NFL 2010 season and remember Oakland plays Tennessee on the road the first game.
After Tennessee’s horrendous start last season at 0-6, I somehow doubt if Jeff Fisher will allow that to happen again.
That, coupled with new faces in Oakland, the travel, and having to defend one of the premier fantasy running backs in football, Oakland starts off with a loss.
In fact. this would be a strong pick in Week One, even perhaps surrendering 7-10 points against the spread.
In week two, we find the Raiders at home playing one of the worst teams in football last season, if not the worst.
Lets give Raider Nation the benefit of the doubt, and hope you can beat a rookie Sam Bradford and Stephen Jackson.
Record thus far? 1-1.
Game three for the Raiders will be a toss-up as they take on the Arizona Cardinals on the road.
The pass defense will be tested against a big time receiver, but I think they might surprise a few folks on this one. Matt Leinart does not strike fear into the heart of any defense I know.
They will play the run well, and grab a win on the road. This game is a toss-up prediction wise, but I will most likely pick the Raiders when the time comes. But look for Oakland to be 2-1.
Week four brings Houston to the Bay Area. This is a dangerous team, especially after their slow starts every season. By now, Houston could be 1-3 and really angry.
This was a pretty good team last season that just missed the playoffs. If Oakland got by Arizona, most likely they will drop this one.
Just as easily, they could lose to Arizona, then beat Houston. In all probability the Raiders are 2-2 four games into the season.
Week five will bring a loss to the Raiders at the hands of the dreaded San Diego Chargers, and send them into a small nosedive. losing a division opener. Overall record? 2-3 now.
Week six the nosedive continues as the San Francisco 49ers win the battle of the Bay, and climb towards a division crown. The Raiders will now be 2-4.
Week seven finds the Raiders with their back against the wall, as they take on division rival Denver in Mile High.
The Denver Broncos are so lost at this point in the season, people are calling for season ticket refunds, as the Raiders add to the misery by winning this one. Oakland is now 3-4.
In week eight they have Seattle at home in Oakland, and should be settled in enough to get a victory at home and be at 500 ball at 4-4. Seattle isn’t going to beat a lot of teams, same as last year.
Week nine, and still without a break, the Chiefs come to Alameda. Raiders 24, Chiefs 21. What else is new? Oakland improves to 5-4.
In Week Ten of the NFL season, they rested, and all was good, as the Raiders have a winning record with nine games in.
Week 11 takes the team all the way to Pittsburgh, where they lose this one. Hey, so far, I’ve been more than fair. Giving them a win here is not realistic thinking, meaning they will soon be 5-5.
Week 12: The Dolphins swim into Oakland with Brandon Marshall and company, and this team may be fighting it out with the Jets and Patriots for the AFC East.
Miami should be improved over last season a bit with that big wide receiver threat, taking the heat off of what were number two, three, and four pass catchers anyway.
Miami just did not have a number one at wide receiver, Now they do, plus that crazy good ground attack. Check-mate Dolphins, dropping Oakland to 5-6.
Week 13 is crucial as the Raiders take on San Diego on the road. San Diego sweeps the Raiders for the two games series in 2010. Sorry guys, but you can’t expect to win the division this season.
Now at 5-7 they have to think about the next season, and give some players a chance to step up. Week 14, however, is a road trip against Jacksonville, which could be tough.
Going back a game, lets say the Raiders do pull off the upset against San Diego.
They still lose to the Jags, but they are at 6-7. It is unrealistic to say the Raiders will win on the road in back to back weeks against pretty good teams.
The Raiders now have Denver in Week 15, but they are the ones sweeping now, as the Broncos go down again, twice in the same season to the hated rivals. Overall, Oakland is now 7-7.
They lose to the maybe Super Bowl bound Colts again, and drop to 7-8.
The final week of the season will be for an 8-8 season, which they will pull off by beating the Chiefs again to finish the 2010 campaign.
There you have it in a nutshell. With my accuracy, and a two game swing at the very most. The Raiders could manage to go 10-6 which is highly unlikely.
They could also go 6-10 which is not much improvement. This is unlikely also.
The best projection for the Raiders will be between 7-9 and 9-7 for this season. This makes my number even more relevant as 8-8 looks to be a perfect season projection.
I think you can bet the eight win total on the Raiders and make some good dough in Vegas this season. Anything over seven wins is the over, I do believe.

Ravens sell out the season, quickly
Posted by Mike Florio on July 23, 2010 11:44 AM ET
At a time when the NFL is fretting about fans choosing to stay home and watch the game on TV, the Ravens won’t be experiencing that dynamic in 2010.
Single-game tickets went on sale this morning, and they’re all gone for each regular-season game. Fewer than 1,000 remain for the team’s two preseason contests.
Now, if only the franchise would have similar fortune in their dealings with Ed Reed.

Kenyon Cotton, Former Baltimore Ravens RB, Dies at 36
7/23/2010 10:24 AM ET By FanHouse Staff
Kenyon Cotton, a former Baltimore Raven running back, died Friday following complications after surgery to repair a torn Achilles’ tendon.
According to reports in the Minden (La.) Press-Herald, Cotton had outpatient surgery to repair a torn Achilles’ last week.
Cotton reportedly suffered breathing complications after returning home from the procedure. As a result, he was admitted to a south Louisiana hospital and later placed into a medically induced coma in preparation to address his medical situation.
“From what I’m told, when he came out of the coma, he had a series of strokes back to back,” Kenyon Allen, Cotton’s younger cousin, told the paper. “He had been on life support the entire time he was in the hospital.”
Allen said the percentage of dependency on the life support fluctuated. Following the series of strokes, Cotton became fully dependent on life support.
Cotton reportedly passed away Friday after being taken off life support.

Bought one of them accross the street from the coliseum. I was staying at La Quinta Inn and some guy rolls up in a van full (of #21, #75, #80, #81 a couple more I forgot to mention) for 60 bucks!! That was a great deal if you ask me.

Nnamdi,
Thanks for the link. Nice article on Hue Jackson. That might turn out to be the biggest move of all in what has been a very positve offseason.
If this guy is actually able to cure all that ails the Silver & Black Offense, like he is being counted on, then this guy ought to be at least nominated for a Nobel Peace prize. For bringing peace and harmony to the long suffering Raider Nation.
But you gotta love everything Jerry has been reporting about how Hue is handling the offense in practice. Can’t wait for some training camp updates.

When Jamarcus was running that should have been the first sign you were dreaming.
July 23rd, 2010 at 2:12 pm
it’s early to say but the 1st game should be close, i think we keep vy in check, load up against the run, and keep it a low scoring game just like 2-3yrs ago when we played in tenn. i could see a 13-10 or 10-9 game going either way. maybe a late fumble recovery seals the deal for a raiders victory.

Shaun Rogers of Cleveland Browns Hailed as Hero
7/22/2010 3:00 PM ET By Milton Kent
A suburban Cleveland police chief is praising Cleveland Browns defensive lineman Shaun Rogers for potentially saving the lives of a drunken driver and others.
WEWS, the ABC affiliate in Cleveland, reported that Middleburg Heights (Oh.) police chief John Maddox saluted Rogers, a three-time Pro Bowler, for keeping a drunk driver from hurting himself and others last Thursday.
“There is no doubt in my mind that your actions, in all probability, averted a tragedy,” Maddox wrote in a letter to Rogers. “I commend you for your civic mindedness. You went above and beyond what the normal, responsible individual would do in that case.”
Police said Rogers was driving along Interstate 71 when he noticed a car swerving along three lanes of the highway with a flat tire. Rogers called 911 and gave the dispatcher the details of what he saw, the station reported.
Eventually, the driver of the other car pulled over on the left side of the road, turned off his lights and parked. Rogers pulled behind the car and put his emergency flashers on, to keep the car from being hit by passing vehicles.
Rogers stayed there until the police arrived. When they did, the driver, a 20-year-old, was charged with drunken driving and underage consumption
