Houston signs, only McClain is left

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, July 26th, 2010 at 7:47 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Defensive lineman Lamarr Houston, the Raiders’ second-round pick in the 2010 draft, signed a contract Monday, the club announced on its Web site.

Houston, the 44th overall selection, played defensive tackle for the last two years at Texas but is slated to be an end with the Raiders, playing over the tight end, according to coach Tom Cable.

The Raiders report to the Napa Valley Marriott Tuesday, then have a day of meetings before the first practice on Thursday.

Houston has been back in the Bay Area for the past week and said upon his arrival he expected no delays with regard to being in camp on time.

“I’m excited,” Houston said in advance of signing his contract. “It’s my first opportunity to play in the NFL and I thank God for getting me this far. It’s a dream come true and I’m very excited for training camp.”

Of the last four Raiders first-round picks, only quarterback JaMarcus Russell missed significant time, not signing until after the regular season opener in 2007. Safety Michael Huff (2006) and wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey (2009) missed a single practice and made it for the second practice on the first day of workouts. Running back Darren McFadden (2008) signed on June 6, well in advance of camp.

McClain, the No. 8 overall pick, should be in line for guaranteed money in the neighborhood of what was received by Heyward-Bey as the No. 7 pick a year ago. Heyward-Bey received $23.5 million guaranteed.

The rookie also drew the ire of offensive tackle Langston Walker, until Walker shoved Houston to the ground and deposited his 360 pounds on top of him after one play.

    ***

    LOL!

big Langston showed this little rookie whos boss

I could care less if he still weighs 360. As long as he can block, he’s a lock!

Cornell Green was a good run blocker too, but I think Walker will be much better in terms in pass protection and penalties

    Can Langston long snap?

  • RaiderRockstar

What about him running the wrong routes?

Or him NOT running the pattern because he didn’t think the ball was coming his way?

What about him running into other WRs?

Dude is a frickin headcase in the elevator doesn’t go all the way to the top manner.

The wrap on JLH has been the same since he’s been here. I think there is a reason we keeep drafting WRs to take his spot.

Do you really think Jacoby Ford doesn’t have a chance to cut into his snaps?

Sad part about it is JLH has all the talent in the world to play WR for us. Has slot playmaker written all over him.

I just think there are a couple more dumb players that we need to get rid of before we are on track. Low football IQ guys, if you will.

    Where’s ROG at?

I told you biatch that Terrence Cody would have a problem with conditioning had he been a Raider. He’s with the Ravens and this already happened…..from PFT

Terrence Cody fails Ravens conditioning test
Posted by Mike Florio on July 27, 2010 10:13 AM ET
Though he presumably didn’t run sans shirt, Ravens rookie nose tackle Terrence Cody was held out of the team’s first training camp practice on Tuesday because he failed the conditioning test.

The explanation came from coach John Harbaugh, according to Jamison Hensley of the Baltimore Sun.

Cody’s overall physical condition — and size — greased the skids for a fall deep into round two of the 2010 draft.

Of course, he’s not the first nose tackle to run into trouble when it comes to demonstrating that he’s ready to go. Two years ago, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin keep Casey Hampton out of practice for an extended stretch because of the extent to which subcutaneous fat was stretching his skin.

That said, nose tackles don’t need to be triathletes. They are big, fat agile men whose job is to clog the line of scrimmage like the main sewer line leading out of their houses.

    RR,

Heard played OL & DL at college, so I don’t know if he can make the roster this year. We can add him to the PS, develop him this year, and maybe he can play next season (if there is one).

  • RaiderRockstar

Higgins > Ford, Miller, Watkins, Figurs, Holland

    Top 5:

    Schilens – injury prone
Higgins – potential playmaker. best WR on the roster in 2008. progressed nicely after JR was benched last season
Heyward Bey – awful rookie campaign, but probably the most improved player on this team since January
Murphy – 9 drops last year and terrible route running. crashed into JLH on 1 play last season. friends with JaWalrus
Ford – rookie speed burner that couldn’t catch a cold in OTA’s. he’s only 5’9″ – not your typical Raiders WR. he’ll be the return man and nothing more

  • http://atm Raider O

    Neilb,

    I don’t think he can.

couldn’t agree more. Cody will be a beast.

wish we would have drafted him!

  • http://atm Raider O

JLH didn’t play last season, but I hope he can recover and play like he did 2 years ago. He had 6-8 TDs, and he had huge plays on offense and STs. I also like Ford a lot, and I think he can contribute to the team this season, so he needs some playing time.
Nick Miller the DB killer is/ was a nice camp story IMHO.

The Celtics are in discussions to bring Eddie House back to the Celtics next season, according to the Boston Globe. House was shipped to New York for Nate Robinson in a deadline deal last February.

Boston can only offer a veteran’s minimum of $1.35 million, so it’s not a big risk. Well, so long as it is just a one-year deal.

    RR,

May I remind you of Turdell Sands? He played decent when he was fit for his contract but what happened after he got out of shape?

  • RaiderRockstar

The Timberwolves will waive Delonte West, according to Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports, making him an unrestricted free agent. Minnesota will save $3.1 million in ’10-’11 if they keep Telfair. They also ditched the $8.8 million owed to Sessions over the following two seasons.

According to Brian Windhorst of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the unspecified pick will be a 2013 second rounder. Kahn is saved; nobody wins the deal, but nobody loses. It’s just two teams swapping parts for savings, below average rotation players for more of the same but at different positions.

Those “advanced talks” between the Cavaliers and the Wolves must have been rather productive, because according to Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports, Cleveland will send Delonte West and Sebastian Telfair to Minnesota for Ramon Sessions, Ryan Hollins, and an unspecified draft pick.

you people need to realize 2 things:

    1) being fat alone doesn’t mean you can or can’t play football

    2) I’d rather take a flyer on a young raw porker like Kellen Heard than a known 1st round bust in William Joseph – who we cut twice last year!

  • aig

If you can’t even pratice, how are you supposed to be a stud in the game? I just dont get your logic.

Here is the issue. The guy had a conditioning problem while he played for free in college. What do you think is going to happen now that you give him a few million dollars to spend? Apparently he ate himself out of shape again…

  • RaiderRockstar

Sands was always a fat tub of goo!

his problem was consistancy and technique. He wasn’t strong enough for his size and he had no motor whatsoever. he blamed his problems on not having his head in the game because his mom died, remember?

sure his conditioning could have improved, but that wasn’t the only reason he flopped. the Patriots signed him after we cut him

if he was THAT out of shape he wouldn’t have passed thier physical

I hope the Lakers sign Delonte West to a minimum contract….in the finals they can spray him with a little bit of the perfume that lebron’s mom wears and then send him out to guard Lebron in game one….Lebron will get freaked out again and fold like a cheap tent yet again.

  • bcz24

How many games do Turdell suit for the Patsies? My bet is 0

Kobe, Sasha, Shannon, Blake & Fisher

Lakota: who’s minutes would Delonte West steal ???

  • J Wiggle

All BS aside, I was hoping we got Delonte a few years ago when the Celtics gave up on him. Has Ron Harper written all over him. Would be PERFECT next to Kobe in the triangle.

Steve Blake is a nice consolation though.
