Raiders’ statement on Tatum’s passing

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, July 27th, 2010 at 12:49 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders released the following statement on the death of safety Jack Tatum, who died Tuesday morning at age 61:

We are deeply saddened by the news of Jack Tatum’s passing. Jack was a true Raider champion and a true Raider warrior.
He was a great player and person and has been a big part of our lives since we drafted him in 1971 as a first round pick out of Ohio State . Jack was the standard bearer and an inspiration for the position of safety throughout college and professional football. Our thoughts, prayers and well wishes go out to his wife Denise and family.

I was at the game when he hit Blackmon for the Pats and broke his neck, Vicious hit! RIP Jack, thanks for the memories!!!!

  4. buckeyeraider Says:

That iconic image of Tatum’s hit on Sammy White in SB XI is the picture, the essence of Silver and Black dominance.

  5. 860Todd Christensen Says:

Thats when we had the swagger, and it was well earned. Maybe this team will learn something from it and apply it on the field. You listening, Mitchell?

  6. ENGLANDRAIDER Says:

Tatum played when the Raiders swaggered onto the field knowing full well who they were and the opposing team just looked nervously over their shoulders.

Jack Tatum was a great Raider.

  12. bcz24 Says:

Priest… when I say they hit with reckless abandon I mean that they weren’t divas in that era. They weren’t afraid to give everything they had on the field and they SURELY weren’t afraid to be carted off. I wasn’t trying to insinuate that Tatum was just throwing himself around. I was more saying they abandoned reason and self preservation! They hit people. They hit them hard and they hit them often… thats why we remember their names.

    right on brotha!!

We’ve got some safteies on this team right now that can pick up that torch relight it and carry it. MM34(I like that moniker) and Tyvon Branch are real players and so is Huff. To get young talented players like Dez Bryant and Matt S. and Houston will change the way we play and the way teams have to play us.

These kids are football players along with the LB’s we have what might be the best defensive talent we’ve had since the SB. If not better.

Jack Tatum set a standard that will be very hard to reach but even he used to say that he couldn’t play in todays game that he would fined constantly. So I think that being said these kids can get it done. They know the field they play on is where Jack Tatum used to do business.

  17. 4evaRaider Says:

    yep Priesttj….

dem youngins are stepping into VERY huge shoes!

    they can handle it

nah. still just a grunt at a desk!

in fact, I may leave here if my wife and I don’t figure out what to do with our baby once he’s born… pays fine if we both work, but daycare or wifey at home full-time wouldn’t work out too well.

so it’s either keep this job and add something part-time or find a better paying job

my fault for not finishing college :(

It wasn’t mere coincidence. Jack was fierce.

  31. Florida Pete Says:

if you look at the play where Stingley broke his neck…

  82. 860Todd Christensen Says:

T.O. will be on his best behavor, incentive clauses and such, but lets see how many he catches, I think Al was right for passing on him, we have some good young talent that’s due to gel soon and I’m getting really excited about this young team, just a hunch….

  83. aig Says:

    Shytt,

both Al and Kitten were wrong. They should have taken AP. This guy was not even on their lists….JR/Calvin/Quinn were all that they discussed.

    860,

    RIP “Assassin”.

A true Raider champion, and Raider warrior. INDEED

Jack and Stabler have always been my favorite Raiders.

I had the honor and pleasure of being able to meet Jack Tatum, at a charity event in 2004. He was very humble and polite with me in the few moments I was able to spend with him, while he autographed a football I had brought to the event. When I made a comment to him about how we could use him now back there to lay the wood, he replied “I don’t think I would be able to play, with the rules they have today.”

That football will always be on display in my house. And I will proudly wear my Tatum throwback jersey for the opener vs. Tenn in Jack’s honor.

My condolences to his family, an loved ones…..

    T.O. picks the Bengals
Posted by Mike Florio on July 27, 2010 5:33 PM ET
Well, it’s happened. Receiver Terrell Owens has agreed to terms with the Bengals.

Per a league source, Owens will receive a base salary of $2 million. He can earn up to another $2 million in incentives.

(We reported it first, scooping even the OCNN, which put the word out several minutes after us.)

The source says that the incentives are based on receptions, yards, and touchdowns.

Given that the Bengals didn’t really have a need at the position and in light of the franchise’s reputation for being extremely careful with money, it’s a good deal for Owens. He gets more than twice the veteran minimum for a player of his experience, and though the specific triggers for the $2 million are not yet known, it’s our understanding that if he performs like he did last year in Buffalo (55 catches, 829 yards, five touchdowns), he’ll earn most of the money.

That said, the decision to tie that much money to performance could create friction, if Owens isn’t on the field as much as he believes he needs to be. But the Bengals likely know this, and the decision potentially reflects a concession that Antonio Bryant isn’t going to be what they thought he was going to be.

As Albert Breer of the Boston Globe points out via Twitter, T.O.’s regular season will begin for the second straight year with a trip to Foxborough to face the Patriots, employers of “the other 81.” As PFT points out via PFT, Owens’ preseason will begin for the second straight year with a trip to Canton to play in the Hall of Fame game, televised exclusively on NBC.

And Owens will face the Dallas Cowboys, the team that abruptly cut him after the 2008 season.

Suddenly, the first exhibition game of the year got a lot more interesting.

Sad day to see Jack Tatum gone.

He is my favorite Raider all time. I have an authentic size 46 white Jack Tatum jersey that I ordered about a year ago. It is my favorite jersey I own.

    RIP Assassin

So, now we have Houston, and Mitchell with balls. Who else we got? Maybe J Henderson.

As I asked year before last, and last year, whos gonna lsy it down, who is gonna put the other team in thier place, who is gonna enflict PAIN on the opponent? Who has the guts to walk up the the biggest, baddest guy on avery team, and punch him in the mouth? WHO IS GONNA BE A RAIDER???

    ^^^^^^^^
Tyvon Branch can lay the wood and Trevor Scott is a beast also….McClain will be there as well and Wimbley is another beast, just waiting to be unleashed.

    //////////////////////

Scott, Wimbley, And Branch are good guys. Thats it, GOOD guys. McClain is unknown as far as effectiveness goes, but he is NO RAY LEWIS. We need Ray Lewis, we need Tatum, we need Philyaw, Sistrunk, Upshaw, Tuzz, Long, Shell, Alzado types. At lease a few more!

Who is gonna have MM, and Houston’s back?

  121. 860Todd Christensen Says:

HL, Who is going to save them from MM and Houston, I’m likeing this combo to be twins….IMHO

  122. Henry Lawrence Says:

Biekert is back. I liked this guy alot, but he was a little soft.

  123. DutchRaider77 Says:

Interesting…Per Jerry’s tweet that Scott is both a DE and LB. Wonder if this means he is a DE on passing downs and Howard comes in at WLB? Will he be the starting WLB?

I was at the game when he hit Blackmon for the Pats and broke his neck, Vicious hit! RIP Jack, thanks for the memories!!!!
    ***************************************************
For the second time… it was Daryl Stingley who’s neck was broken.

860Todd, your memory of a second neck injury caused by Tatum must be influenced by either ignorance or an intoxicating substance?
