Raiders’ statement on Tatum’s passing

The Raiders released the following statement on the death of safety Jack Tatum, who died Tuesday morning at age 61:

We are deeply saddened by the news of Jack Tatum’s passing. Jack was a true Raider champion and a true Raider warrior.
He was a great player and person and has been a big part of our lives since we drafted him in 1971 as a first round pick out of Ohio State . Jack was the standard bearer and an inspiration for the position of safety throughout college and professional football. Our thoughts, prayers and well wishes go out to his wife Denise and family.

the Raiders are a classy organization

    thanks Al Davis!

  • I was at the game when he hit Blackmon for the Pats and broke his neck, Vicious hit! RIP Jack, thanks for the memories!!!!

  • buckeyeraider

That iconic image of Tatum’s hit on Sammy White in SB XI is the picture, the essence of Silver and Black dominance.

  • Thats when we had the swagger, and it was well earned. Maybe this team will learn something from it and apply it on the field. You listening, Mitchell?

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

Tatum played when the Raiders swaggered onto the field knowing full well who they were and the opposing team just looked nervously over their shoulders.

Jack Tatum was a great Raider.

  • Hello Nation!

very sad about the Assassin’s passing….What a STUD that epitomized the TRUE meaning of what it takes 2B a RAIDER….Rest In Peace BROTHER!

For the second time… it was Daryl Stingley who’s neck was broken.

    Keep the posts coming!

Priest… when I say they hit with reckless abandon I mean that they weren’t divas in that era. They weren’t afraid to give everything they had on the field and they SURELY weren’t afraid to be carted off. I wasn’t trying to insinuate that Tatum was just throwing himself around. I was more saying they abandoned reason and self preservation! They hit people. They hit them hard and they hit them often… thats why we remember their names.

  • Hey RRS….

    you own that company yet?

    Zach Miller > Todd Christensen

  • Bcz24, look it up, another game.

    right on brotha!!

We’ve got some safteies on this team right now that can pick up that torch relight it and carry it. MM34(I like that moniker) and Tyvon Branch are real players and so is Huff. To get young talented players like Dez Bryant and Matt S. and Houston will change the way we play and the way teams have to play us.

These kids are football players along with the LB’s we have what might be the best defensive talent we’ve had since the SB. If not better.

Jack Tatum set a standard that will be very hard to reach but even he used to say that he couldn’t play in todays game that he would fined constantly. So I think that being said these kids can get it done. They know the field they play on is where Jack Tatum used to do business.

  • yep Priesttj….

dem youngins are stepping into VERY huge shoes!

    they can handle it

    4eva: hey bro 8)

nah. still just a grunt at a desk!

in fact, I may leave here if my wife and I don’t figure out what to do with our baby once he’s born… pays fine if we both work, but daycare or wifey at home full-time wouldn’t work out too well.

so it’s either keep this job and add something part-time or find a better paying job

my fault for not finishing college 🙁

  • I get excited thinking Al might unleash these guys with a BLITZ about 15 times a game. Whoa, what a thought!

  • well 1st of all RRS you must feed the Baby LOL!!!!

( I think Dakota might be able 2 explain that 1 lol)!

Best of luck with your 1st born!??

Also thats what grammys and familys R4!

It will all work 4 U Bro!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yep 860….Big Al MUST be CHOMPING at da bit 2 let the dogs loose 😉

  • WOOOOOOOOOOW

    I did a winky thingy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Been looking around the sites.ESPN.com has it as a headline on my home page, but nothing from NFL.com and SI.com.

What a pitiful class-less organisation the nfl can be.A grudge against Jack?

I’ve just spent the last hour on Yahoo sports defending Jack against some who are happy he’s dead.

I’m saddened by his death and horrified that some are celebrating it.

  • Sends shivers to the cockles of my heart!:) RRS, mine will be 21 next month, your life will change, but it’s a good one, just think, another Raiders fan!!! Mine had a jersey the day he was born. Now get out shopping!!! lol

  • So very very true Todd C!

  • buckeyeraider

Said before, but it’s worth saying again.
    RIP Jack Tatum.
The original. The one and only Buckeye/Raider.

Jack played on one of the best, and most feared NFL teams of all time, the ’76 Raiders. He also played on Woody’s best. some of the greatest and most feared college teams of all time.

It wasn’t mere coincidence. Jack was fierce.

  • if you look at the play where Stingley broke his neck…

you will see that Tatum didn’t do it…

Stingley did it by lowering his head and plowing into Tatum’s chest…

it was a bad rap on Tatum…

  • Hey 4eva!

I can’t understand the way some people think.

But,HEY!!!!Jack’s gone and he’s still got them frightened.

Kinda makes me more proud to be part of the nation.

I hate to break up the love fest of camp opening…but, what is the over/under for how many days it takes for Chaz to get hurt?

    It’s only a matter of time…

  • Itz, you a niners fan? Chaz is going to have a break-out year, he told me so…..

  • jraider

First player off Hilton bus is Richard Seymour. Says camp is foundation to season. Came in with rookies and undrafted free agents

  • Seymour is teaching by example, it will spread and become infectous, 9-7, we take West!

The last time I checked, Chaz and DHB play on the opposite side of the field from each other and play different WR spots. They aren’t competition with each other…

Sorry dude… Tatum only broke one Patriots neck in the NFL… it was Daryl Stingley’s

  • Bcz, Google Blackmon, it was a Dec League Game, not pre-season, ended his career. Think first name was John? Good hunting! T.O. is being looked at by the Jinks.

  • jraider

@Bcz24: No. McClain hasn’t signed yet.
