Raiders’ statement on Tatum’s passing

The Raiders released the following statement on the death of safety Jack Tatum, who died Tuesday morning at age 61:

We are deeply saddened by the news of Jack Tatum’s passing. Jack was a true Raider champion and a true Raider warrior.
He was a great player and person and has been a big part of our lives since we drafted him in 1971 as a first round pick out of Ohio State . Jack was the standard bearer and an inspiration for the position of safety throughout college and professional football. Our thoughts, prayers and well wishes go out to his wife Denise and family.

  • Bcz, he wasn’t parylized, but never played again…

Jerrymcd First player off Hilton bus is Richard Seymour. Says camp is foundation to season. Came in with rookies and undrafted free agents

  • Cable described it as X-Y-Z with our WR’s…

on offense Chaz started on what would be the QB’s left hand side,Murphy on the qbs right….

Chaz goes down.DHB starts on Chaz’ side and Murph stayed on the right….

either way Cable said our WR’s play X Y Z and you still wear 49er jammies

  • 4Eva, I wear Red Sox jammies, with the feet, do they count?

  • Plunketthead

    Thats too dam funny.
There were a few who screamed bloody murder over not drafting him and a few who called it right.

Ate himself right out of the NFL and into the hotdog eating contest on the fourth
Before his rookie f in season!!
Thats pretty impressive no matter how you slice it.

  • Plunketthead

I suspect Jack & George were jacked up on mini whites.

  • Plunk, good call on the link, I remember that stuff, man was it good!!!!

  • aig

MM34 is going to get somebody killed in camp this year or in the preseason. You know he’s going to try and live up to his idol’s image.

  • Aig, you make it sound like it’s a bad thing? It might get catchy!

  • buckeyeraider

    Bunghules sign TO.
    Cincinnat,Oh…Soap opera central.
    T.O., Ochocinco and Pacman.

  • Plunketthead

    Kiffin is a knucklehead.
Haden will fire him for cause within the year.
Lou Holtz said they called him helicopter when he was coach at Arkansas because he was always stirring stuff up.

    Al is the King
Lance Kiffin is a liar for days, for weeks, for months and years.

I hope Chaz can stay healthy. TO might’ve made a nice veteran insurance policy.

Oh,well. He’s somebody elses headache now.

  • RaiderRockstar

thanks 4eva & 860Todd Christensen for the kind words 🙂

Raider fan for sure. thats right!

granny to be has to work as well and my mom passed last year so we’ll have to figure something else out.

but I know it’ll all be cool sooner or later

don’t want to sell my truck. 10 more payments and it’s mine! Grrr

  • RaiderRockstar

Lets hope Chaz Schilens isn’t anywhere near Mitchell or Branch in camp!

  • buckeyeraider

Likw what I hear about Seymour. Getting off the first bus with the rookies. Leading by example. Setting the tone.

This guy knows what it takes to win in this league. Plus, he’s got a little nasty streak in him.

I hope this guy is motivated for his last big contract push, and has a monster year.

  • RaiderRockstar

I feel sorry for Carson Palmer!

T1ts Smith on the o-line, targets Ocho, Owens & Purify. Benson in the backfield

didn’t they also sign cokeboy Matt Jones from Arkansas (Jags) ???

  • RRS, keep the truck, everything works out ok for a reason, you’ll see. Make it a time of joy, enjoy it, it only happens once, and time goes by quickly! Print It!

  • supapimp

Kiffin was right about not wanting jawalrus and wanting calvin “megatron” johnson instead. Nuff said.

  • aig

no, I’m a fan of MM34. I just hope that he lights up in the preseason and not training camp. I dont want him to injure Chaz or our WR corp. as in one of the prev posts.

  • T.O. will be on his best behavor, incentive clauses and such, but lets see how many he catches, I think Al was right for passing on him, we have some good young talent that’s due to gel soon and I’m getting really excited about this young team, just a hunch….

  • aig

both Al and Kitten were wrong. They should have taken AP. This guy was not even on their lists….JR/Calvin/Quinn were all that they discussed.

  • RaiderRockstar

MM34 is gonna lay somebody out in camp.

Just hope it’s somebody like Marcel Reece, Nick Miller or John Owens … not Campbell, McFadden or Heyward-Bey!

  • Aig, he wants to play this year, he won’t hurt anyone in camp, the reins are already in place….lol

  • RaiderRockstar

DHB & Mitch were both hamstrung early last year …

I hope that doesn’t happen to Jacoby Ford & Walter Mac!

we need these kids healthy. it’s important to get off to a good start

  • aig

MM34 better delivers this year. I’ve been backing him prior to last year’s draft and I hope he comes through. I think he will though. We desperately need a good hitter back there.

  • Trainers should already be working their regimine on them, to aleviate these kind of injuries, hope they did their homework…

  • RaiderRockstar

    5pm in Podunk. later gents!

  • If we put up what we could have in the backfield, top 5 D this year, they have to man up, even if it’s for Jack….

  • Nite, RRS

  • Have a most enjoyable evening Nation!

  • Nite 4Eva!

  • Let’s go Al. Get McClain’s deal done tonight.

  • RIP “Assassin”.

A true Raider champion, and Raider warrior. INDEED

Jack and Stabler have always been my favorite Raiders.

I had the honor and pleasure of being able to meet Jack Tatum, at a charity event in 2004. He was very humble and polite with me in the few moments I was able to spend with him, while he autographed a football I had brought to the event. When I made a comment to him about how we could use him now back there to lay the wood, he replied “I don’t think I would be able to play, with the rules they have today.”

That football will always be on display in my house. And I will proudly wear my Tatum throwback jersey for the opener vs. Tenn in Jack’s honor.

My condolences to his family, an loved ones…..

  • 75, I think rookies should be paid $400,000 for the first 4 years and prove themselves, then open the checkbook. Your thoughts?

  • fat kidd

  • 909, spoken like a true Raider, thanks for sharing this with us….

    T.O. picks the Bengals
Posted by Mike Florio on July 27, 2010 5:33 PM ET
Well, it’s happened. Receiver Terrell Owens has agreed to terms with the Bengals.

Per a league source, Owens will receive a base salary of $2 million. He can earn up to another $2 million in incentives.

(We reported it first, scooping even the OCNN, which put the word out several minutes after us.)

The source says that the incentives are based on receptions, yards, and touchdowns.

Given that the Bengals didn’t really have a need at the position and in light of the franchise’s reputation for being extremely careful with money, it’s a good deal for Owens. He gets more than twice the veteran minimum for a player of his experience, and though the specific triggers for the $2 million are not yet known, it’s our understanding that if he performs like he did last year in Buffalo (55 catches, 829 yards, five touchdowns), he’ll earn most of the money.

That said, the decision to tie that much money to performance could create friction, if Owens isn’t on the field as much as he believes he needs to be. But the Bengals likely know this, and the decision potentially reflects a concession that Antonio Bryant isn’t going to be what they thought he was going to be.

As Albert Breer of the Boston Globe points out via Twitter, T.O.’s regular season will begin for the second straight year with a trip to Foxborough to face the Patriots, employers of “the other 81.” As PFT points out via PFT, Owens’ preseason will begin for the second straight year with a trip to Canton to play in the Hall of Fame game, televised exclusively on NBC.

And Owens will face the Dallas Cowboys, the team that abruptly cut him after the 2008 season.

Suddenly, the first exhibition game of the year got a lot more interesting.

  • Even re-named the Lab we adopted last Nov. Tatum, after she whacked a possum “assassin” style the very first night at our house…
