Cable quick hits

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, July 28th, 2010 at 12:40 pm in Oakland Raiders.

For those of you who didn’t see it on Comcast, some quick hits from Tom Cable’s press briefing:

– Rolando McClain hasn’t signed a contract, but Cable is hoping he’ll be signed by the time the team practices Thursday.

– The Raiders will again have four days of “learning intensive” practices. It’s mostly choreography and footwork, deathly boring to watch, but Cable believes its of great benefit.

Other than the injury to Chaz Schilens, Cable liked the way the Raiders stayed healthy through camp, without the kind of soft tissue injuries sustained by other teams.

– Jason Campbell is the starting quarterback, information which was first leaked in a story on Raiders.com during a camp preview.

With Bruce Gradkowski not being around for three months, Cable said it was the only thing that made sense.

– Cable wasn’t shy about proclaiming the Raiders a factor in the division, regardless of preseason prognostications. He said the “changing of the culture” has been complete.

– The hiring of defensive assistant Greg Biekert was to retain a sense of Raiders tradition and bring in someone with the kind of attitude who can help with run defense as well as work with McClain at middle linebacker.

– Offensive coordinator Hue Jackson will call plays from the sidelines, not in the booth.

More to come later . . .

Raider E, this is why you get angry when I say the things I say…cause you know them to be true…

  • Coach Elkins

The pass D hasn’t even been attacked…hasn’t needed to be…cause we couldn’t score any points!

  • Raider E

Im not angry son. I would just blike the Nation to be united and devoted to winning at whatever cost.

  • Just Fire Baby

You are listenung to that fat bag of gas Warren Sapp? I pictured you as one of the more intelligent people on this blog Fire? Say it ain’t so….

    **************************

    I am a huge stats guy…..except for QB’s.

Before Rich Gannon came aboard, Jeff George’s 1997 season was statistically the best season any Raider QB ever had.

He accumulated all those stats on the back-end of blowout after blowout in a 4-12 year.

JC is an upgrade, probably a huge upgrade, and I will roll with him. I am just very cautious with him, never liked him before he came here, and I can’t just change that overnight. I need to see it first before I hope aboard the bandwagon.

Just leave some room for me if/when it happens!!!

  • Coach Elkins

    Well, we agree on that….

  • VanHeathen

Funny to hear Warren Sapp talk junk about stats…
all he did while he was here, was try to pad HIS STATS!
So he could get his Dumb Fat Ass into the Hall of Fame.
    What a D-bag!

  • Coach Elkins

I am the Raiders most objective supporter….

Sadly, they continue to ignore placing the responsibility where it should lie…ON THE HEAD COACH

  • Coach Elkins

We get rid of Morrison and Fargas, two players who have earned countless team awards and replace them….

    and call it improvement…

    What a joke!

  • Coach Elkins

The Russell argument is also jaded…

The Raiders actually improved with him at QB record wise over the last 7 years…

  • Just Fire Baby

One good thing about JC, he has been a much better QB on the road than at home. Like waaaaaay better.

Maybe the pressure of playing in front of some home fans who were disappointed in the former first-rounder got him a little tight. Those fans were just waiting for him to fail and boo him.

Surely the nation will be behind him 110% and he can play the same on the road and much better at home.

  • Coach Elkins

Too bad Cable isn’t as good at coaching as he is at selling himself to Mr. Davis…

If he was, we would be average!

Lane Kiffin: “I feel very good, after a conversation with Jeff Fisher”
Posted by Michael David Smith on July 28, 2010 3:51 PM ET
USC head coach Lane Kiffin is being sued by the Tennessee Titans after hiring away one of their assistants, Kennedy Pola. It’s a fascinating case on a number of levels, including the fact that Titans head coach Jeff Fisher is a USC alumnus who has always been supportive of the USC football program.

But while the lawsuit would seem to suggest that Fisher no longer views the Trojans program so favorably, Kiffin claims that he and Fisher are cool with each other.

“I don’t picture it as Jeff suing us,” Kiffin said today on ESPN. “It is a lawsuit, so I can’t comment very much on it. I feel very good, after a conversation with Jeff Fisher, that he now understands exactly what took place and I think he feels better about it.”

Asked whether he thinks there’s any significance to the fact that the Tennessee Titans are suing him just months after he spurned the University of Tennessee to take the USC job, Kiffin declined to answer.

“It’s a lawsuit,” Kiffin said. “I can’t comment on it

  • Coach Elkins

Keep looking for reasons why you all “hope” for the best….instead of reasons why we’ll remain the same type of team….

A team with no leadership in sight, a team with a coaching staff who fails calling the actual game, and a team who annually sends its punter and kicker to the pro bowl….oh and picks top ten in the draft each year!

  • Coach Elkins

    Optimism vs. Objectivity

    Objectivity wins every time

The Russell argument is also jaded…

    LOL!

McCown, Culpepper, Collins, Brooks & Walter would have all performed WORSE than Russell in his last 25 starts ???

Gradkowski & Frye both outplayed JaWalrus last year so either these two 3rd string journeyman types are better than the 5 above mentioned or you’re full of horse crap

  • Coach Elkins

    anyone, anyone, Bueller, bueller?

  • Coach Elkins

Da Raiders are 29-83 the past 7 seasons, a 25% chance of victory per
    game.Russell is 7-18 as a starter in the NFL,giving
    the Raiders a 28% chance per game.The last 7
years, JR was an improvement! He had 2 Rookie
WR’s, a 2nd year tight end, 2 Head Coaches and 3 Play Callers. Russell
…is playing “SCAPEGOAT” for your PAIN Raider Nation. =

  • Coach Elkins

    Have a great day fellas!

    Im out

  • Just Fire Baby

What will the Raiders record be in the three preceding years after Russell is the better way to look at that.

We will probably win as many games this one year (7) as Russell did in 25 starts.

  • Coach Elkins

    “Probably”?

    Hahaha

  • RaiderRockstar

We get rid of Morrison and Fargas, two players who have earned countless team awards and replace them….

    and call it improvement…

    What a joke!

    ***

Fargas had 5 visits with teams this offseason and they all passed. now he’s looking at UFL gigs after being our STARTER the past 3 seasons

doesn’t that tell you something ???

Kirk Morrison never had a legit nose tackle on the D-Line in front of him. same with Danny Clark in Oakland. I would have liked to draft Dan Williams or Terrence Cody and kept Morrison another year, but you’d have to be a fool to dislike the Henderson/McClain combo!

  • J Wiggle

And spare me his stats. As Warren Sapp said, stats are for losers.

I can’t believe YOU posted that, lol!

Who cares about open competition with our qb’s is any body this side of sane going to argue that campbell is not the best qb we have seen since ganon

    **********************************

Aaron Brooks resume before he came here included a Pro Bowl and two trips to the playoffs.

Jason Campbell’s has a losing record and nothing anywhere close to a Pro Bowl.

    =====================================================

i faIled to mention brooks and culpepper, they played for soem of the worst coaching i have ever seen. Also the o line was even worst then then last year, brooks tenure in silver and black ended his career in black and blue poor guy never had shot.

Campbell’s win loss record is decieving, the redskins stink out loud, and failed jc. I think he is better the brooks and culpepper based on his abilty to avoid the turn over, those other two were more gunslinger types. That only works if you have enough talent around you to offset your own mistakes! We did not have it.

  • J Wiggle

We will probably win as many games this one year (7) as Russell did in 25 starts.

    ——————————————————-

    Probably ????

    11-5 mayne!

The TEAM is much better than it has EVER been these past 3 years. Not only the QB position, but the entire TEAM.

  • Just Fire Baby

I love me some stats, except when they don’t back up my argument, lol.

Seriously, teams stats are great, individual stats not as important, and QB stats even less.

Matt Schaub threw for like the 5th most yards ever in a season last year. So what I say, they were 8-8 again for the millionth year in a row.

    Win some games!!!

  • J Wiggle

I still can’t believe the 2006 debacle was allowed to happened …

    LMFAO !!!

  • mistic1

Arm strength is only overrated depending on the system you run. Short passing game arm strength is a luxury. Sid Gilman air corryell, davis offense you need arm strength to get the ball outside the hash and down the seams.

  • VanHeathen

    DAMN!
That Elkin’s guys optomism was so uplifting,
    bummed he had to leave…

JC is an upgrade over all of the guys listed above,
Who knows waht JR could have been had he a work ethic and not gotten hooked on Cough Syrup.
But that’s life, time to rally behind JC and Grads and get this team moving upwards…

  • J Wiggle

I don’t think you can ignore stats and rankings. They are certainly a key ingredient. Now I do realize they can EASILY be taken out of context.

  • Just Fire Baby

2006 I think we went 5-0 in the preseason, lol.

OK, maybe preseason doesn’t mean shyt. Better be ready for those Titans Jason, Fisher always has his teams ready.

  • J Wiggle

The guy not too many people are talking about is Zach Miller.

I wonder how he is going to be used?!?!?

  • mistic1

sapp always lives up to his name. doesnt any remember his total disregared for our gap controll defense because he wanted to sack qb’s? sapp is bitter that davis did not want him back at the price he was asking he is suffering from marcusallenidis! Marcus didnt want to give up the spot light to bo, sapp didnt want suck up blockers and let kelly be the penetrator! Wait that doesnt sound right. Any way sour grapes from a fat slop that could use more fruit in his diet!

  • RaiderRockstar

    5pm in Podunk. later gents!

  • Just Fire Baby

Hopefully we are using him less because our WR’s our starting WR’s are catching more than a couple passes a game.

Zack Miller needs less catches and more TD’s. That will be the sign of us being a better offense.

  • J Wiggle

The thing about that 5-0 preseason was all the 4th qtr wins, lol.

The starting units were always awful and looked like we were well on our way to doom. Didn’t think it would be as bad as it was though. Especially the Oline! Under Shell of all people?!?!? Still amazes me.

  • mistic1

get ready for alot of three wide, Air coryell style passing game with power running

  • J Wiggle

Sapp was the beginning of our problems on defense. Him not/can’t/won’t play DE in the 3-4 gave our 3-4 defensive coordinator hire no chance for what 3 years?

  • http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXj7I1RzLSE&feature=related exlaraiderseasonticketholder

Kiffin next on SportsCenter on ESPN on his toughest challenge. lol

  • J Wiggle

Zack Miller needs less catches and more TD’s. That will be the sign of us being a better offense.

    ——————————————————-

Agree with more TDs, but I expect/hope Miller and DMAC will lead the team in receptions. With the S’s needing to help on our WRs, I see those 2 having the most favorable matchups against single coverage.

  • mistic1

Two mistakes from shell made him look like a fool. trying to run a power pasing and running attack with west coast offense linemen. and tom walsh. Not to mention being saddled with two of the most selfish players in the history of the league Moss and sapp

  • J Wiggle

get ready for alot of three wide,

    ——————————————————-

With DMAC as the 3rd WR?

  • Just Fire Baby

My wife used to love Sapp and rocked his jersey.

Than her next jersey was a #2 Jamarcus.

I have told her to hold off now, and just wear the pink, double-zero one for awhile.

  • mistic1

    @ jwiggle
I think one of our wr’s will lead in receptions , but your right just the sheer speed on offense from multiple positions will force the hand of any d coordinator. Boy if DHB catches 50 even 50 balls its gonna be ugly for our oppenents. By the way i would love to see some creative ways to get DHB, ford and dmac involved, reverses, bubble screens, flare outs.

  • J Wiggle

I think the whole Jerry Porter thing was ridiculous to start Shell’s tenure off. We were not that good to have Porter NOT playing with Moss and Jordan, etc.

Shell’s MAIN issue, IMO, was how he allowed all the different messages to be sent by the Oline coaching. Gallery spoke on that later saying he was getting different technique instruction from Slater, Shell, and I forget the 3rd guy.

Well maybe that was his 2nd issue becaue Tom Walsh as an OC was clearly his biggest mistake, lol.

    …………………………………………………WHY DIDNT SHE MARRY HIM??

  • Just Fire Baby

    She did better.

  • mistic1

    Jwiggle,
again thats the beauty of it with the versatilty and the speed we can put on the feild on any down its nuts, i think big bird could call plays for us, how could any one screw this up.

  • mistic1

sapp is a loud mouth loser! what would we say about him if gruden hadnt won them the sb ( or if Gannon wouldnt have scored all those tds for them). Another talented guy that was to selfish to lead a team.

  • Raider E

Hey Coach, your a coward so STFU, or put your moxie where your big ass mouth is?

  • JT52

Is anyone as excited about our ability to stop the run this year as I am ???

Every starter on the D-line will be over 300lbs thats way more beef than any other D-line in the league.

If they can all be responsible and play their gaps then we should be top 10 in rush D this year

    Seymore 6’6 310lbs DE

    Jon Henderson 6’5 330lbs DT

    Tommy Kelly 6’5 300lbs DT

    Lamarr Houston 6’3 305lbs DE

McClain in the middle, Wimbley at strong, Scott at Weak thats 255lbs each at Linebacker

This season is gonna be sick!
