Check Twitter for practice updates

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, July 29th, 2010 at 7:04 am in Oakland Raiders.

Getting ready to leave for Napa and the Raiders’ first practice of training camp.

This morning at 8:30 a.m. will mark the first of eight “learning-intensive” or walk-through practices, although coach Tom Cable did refer to a little more action during drills.

For updates from the penalty box (the 20-yard rectangle on the far side of each field where the media must stay as of last year), check this link to my Twitter page.

The first player interview session, which ostensibly will include recently anointed starting quarterback Jason Campbell and newly-signed first-round pick Rolando McClain, take place following the first practice. There is a second practice at 4:20 p.m.

U gotta love that Mcclain & the Raiders were working into the wee hours too get the deal done so he didn’t miss ANY on field time. Ahhhhh, so refreshing to have guys like this as the leaders of our team along with Seymour being first off the bus, as opposed to Ja-nyquil holding out & being so self centered un-accountable…. I feel like we’ve already won!
I’ll take some real wins though, lol. GO RAIDERS!!!!!!

I think the close games could go our way this year, I really hope that no matter the outcome of the season, we eliminate the blow outs. The complete breakdown games where you just look at the tv and are stunned like did that just happen? Jets and Giants games last year come to mind…

The #s seem right for the slotting, I think its actually the same or a little less than DHB got at 7 last year

  22. Just Fire Baby Says:

2 weeks from today is the first preseason game!!

According to my calculations, that is only about 345 hours away!!!

  23. Dakota Says:

    JWiggle,

Teams have what, 19 days of actual training camp and Cable wants to waste 4 of them….or 20% of them…treating them like little ignorant children. Yeah, I’d call that a waste. Players on other teams have the pressure and responsibility to be prepared going into day one of training camp….Cable has taken that sense of urgency away because the players are now allowed a damned tutorial, which is what they are supposed to do in OTAs.

We certainly didn’t execute better last year because of it, but here we go again.

Get the fukin pads on and start hitting people. This isn’t soccer.

  24. bcz24 Says:

Dakota… hows the blood pressure man! Take 10 deep breaths and then respond. Haha.

  25. Dakota Says:

I thought for sure that Cable would nix the patty-cake training camp idea now that Jamarcus is gone…that lazy fool needed the special ed version of training camp. The other players are professionals, treat them like it.

  26. RaiderFanFromJersey Says:

“Walk throughs” are supposed to be to keep”soft tissue” injuries down…if that is a success, I can’t be mad at that.

  27. Just Fire Baby Says:

I’m with Dakota, I thought last-years tutorial was a no student left behind deal with our former QB.

Four days in a row to start seems a little much. Maybe sprinkly in a half day here, a half-day there after a preseason game, a day or two to start.

Whatever, whether we win or lose this year, won’t depend on this, so it is what it is.

  28. J Wiggle Says:

    Pads go on Monday.

2 weeks of hitting before the first preseason game.

2 weeks plus what, an extra 2 days of pads is going to make that big of a difference?

  29. J Wiggle Says:

    lmao

  32. bcz24 Says:

Dakota I am pretty sure Wiggles is saying that this is a nominal factor in the outcome of our season. We arent going to be standing around in January saying, sh!t if only we had those 4 practices back we would be hoisting the Lombardi trophy… better or worse doesnt matter in the grand scheme of things because it isnt going to have a tangible effect on our season.

  33. J Wiggle Says:

I thought for sure that Cable would nix the patty-cake training camp idea now that Jamarcus is gone

    ——————————————————

5 outta 7 guys on the front 7 are brand new. Possibly 2 of them being rookies.

    Brand new QB

    New OC

Equivalent of a new playbook with all the new plays they are able run by being able to get past page 1

I don’t see the big deal of 8 practices focused on nothing but basics since it’s half week to start camp.

  34. Dakota Says:

I guess if a couple of days don’t really matter, then maybe we should do away with those OTAs too…I mean we will still have 15 days of training camp right?

  35. J Wiggle Says:

Do you really think that all the other NFL teams have been wrong for decades and that Tom Cable has just invented a better training camp?

    Yes!

You’re equating the 4 teaching days with a pool party or something?

  37. bcz24 Says:

We didnt cancel a couple of days of practice dude, we just took the contact out. These guys are professionals, I think they can get the idea of a play without taking each others heads off for a few days… I am all for hitting, contact is one of the reasons i watch the game, i just think you are making a big deal over a small trivial thing. My opinion, and you are entitled to yours so I am dropping it.

My question is how do you know that? Maybe last season we win another game or two at the begining of the season if we had a full training camp? Most teams treat every practice like gold…Cable just tosses out 4 days of camp to make the players do what they should have done in the OTAs…wtf?

Oh well, I guess if we go 10-6 every other team will copy Cable’s Patty-Cake Camp!

    ________________

The point is that the NFL gives teams the OTAs as a way to install the new stuff…are our players really so dumb that they need and extra 4 days of patty-cake sessions to get up to speed when every other team is out there working their asses off?

I thought the best way out of a bad situation was hard work, not a lessening of the work load…but hey, I am sure Mr. 20-54 knows better than all other NFL coaches.

I am pretty sure that the number of days you can hold camp is mandated by the NFL or the CBA. I am not saying have an extra 5 days of training camp, I am just saying be ready to go day one of camp and take full advantage of the days you are allowed to hold camp.

To be fair, LT play is also considered important because right-handed QB’s drop back looking to their right more than their left. If the LE breaks through, they can at least see it and either eat the ball or chuck it away. But a broken-through RE will usually catch them unawares. Fumble!

Re: Team’s record in Russell era vs. Team’s record in the 3 years b4 Russell,

I’ve been saying the same since Russell was cut, over at Jerry McDonald’s blog (where I’ve since been banned, deservedly, I’m not complaining. lol). And thank you for bringing up a stat I’d never thought of, the Raiders’ record in the Russell era even when he didn’t touch the field. Bottom line is that there isn’t a statistic in existence that backs up the notion that the Raiders have improved by merely cutting Russell, and there’s a stat to support just about any old kooky theory. None to support this. Bottom line is that despite Russell’s dismal performance, and it was dismal, the Oakland Raiders have only improved under him from the team they were before him.

To Lefty’s point, It really does seem like we have a coach that “is working well with the owner”. I think the day to day medling by Al is over. Probably more from medical reasons than anything. But Cable’s “methods” with the owner will allow the coordinators to do their thing.

We already hear how Marshall is putting his stamp on the offense.

He got the old man to dump no. 2, and seems to have the respect of everyone. Wow Not even gruden was able to do all of these at the same time, not to mention he is doing it without a buffer!
