No word on Schilens

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, July 29th, 2010 at 7:07 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders completed their second practice session Thursday without wide receiver Chaz Schilens, who left the field early on the session accompanied by a member of the athletic training staff and did not return to the field.

Schilens, who missed the first eight games of the season with a broken metatarsal on his left foot and had two surgeries since, was not limping and its not known if his foot was the problem.

About 30 minutes after practice, Schilens emerged from the hotel and walked back to the field house and still was walking without a limp.

The Raiders had no comment on Schilens’ early exit and the interview sessions had concluded for the day.

Practice resumes Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. Thursday’s second session contained a few team sessions and some seven-on-seven sessions which went beyond the walk-through “learning intensive” pattern of the morning practice, with the defense mostly getting better of the offense in terms of defending the pass.

Do we really want the headaches of TO? The guy showed up late already to his first camp. I think we will be ok with our WR corp.

Yes, I really did want the org to get TO…

In my opinion JFORD in the S#!t…..
He is hella fast, however he grew up playing football, just so happens that he ran track. He was doing the same thing in high school that he was doing in college.
Most people disregard this, as being another nation getting the fastest guy pick…..

Chaz has already went down to a certain extent, that guy is all time fragile. We’ve got to look beyond him he just is not reliable.

It would be nice to see Watkins or Jford take step forward. TO is not an option nor was he ever under Cable he jsut doesn’t want to coach guy’s like T.O.. I’d much rather get a journeyman type.

When I was listening to the Seymour interview on th website I just thought about the “Tuck rule” that we played NE and I thought he must have been somewhat impressed with the way we played in that game. Because this guy is really into this team right now. He likes being here, no question in my mind. And he wants to hlep the Raiders get back to that level of play.

  26. Just Fire Baby Says:

If we are relying on JLH and Jacoby Ford to maximize our passing offense in 2010, we are in deep doo-doo.

Zack Miller, DHB, Lou Murph, Chaz and Darren should catch around 75-80% of our passes.

JLH, Nick Miller, Ford, Meyers, Mike Bush, and Reese can all fight over the leftovers.

  34. aig Says:

    Agreed JFB,

I was looking at JLH/Ford/Watkins/Nick Miller/Whoever as a bonus 3rd or 4th WR. Our production must come from Miller, Murphy, and DHB (cuz Al starts him).

Chaz and McDust are so fragile I dont even bother counting them anymore.

  38. Thec07 Says:

Production will come from whoever is open….

  39. priesttj Says:

Ford may not be a key member of th WRcorp but I wouldn’t sell him tooo short. AS the year wears on he could find himself getting more opportunities. He will draw the worst cover guy on most teams and that is a huge advantage for us. You put that kid in the slot and he could cause some serious matchup problems.

Your not asking these guys to be stars on ly to make a play here or there. Big difference!!

  44. priesttj Says:

What do you mean “too little” too little for what? Ford is perfect for the slot 5′9″ 185 same size as Napoleon Kaufman.

  45. aig Says:

See when I see someone that small I think of Steve Smith. that dude is a baller and he is so precise and strong. I dont think of Steve Smith when I watch Ford. The diff between Ford and JLH so far is that I see Ford is bigger built than that toothpick Gumby JLH.

  46. Thec07 Says:

JFORD is a football player, he likes contact, and for a little guy dished some out beleive it or not….

As far as expetations for rookies, I expect him to be as good if not better than MURPHY <—Bad A$$….
    as a rookie….

JFORD <——- Rookie Of the NATION…

  47. Thec07 Says:

Nap Kaufman <——- awesome, could bench 500lbs…

  48. aig Says:

    Priest,

Please name for me how many slot 5-9 WR’s making an impact for their teams in the NFL?

  49. Thec07 Says:

Best NFL football team in the history of the NFL?

    1976 Raiders….

    The End.

  50. bigd2010 Says:

size doesnt matter…. If he can ball he can ball. thats it.

  51. mistic1 Says:

ford can be like a faster more explosive version of wes welker, with a little more veratility than wes, put him in the slot, motion him out of the backfield, run reverses and bubble screens, and slants. He has hands he is a football player. Dont sleep on this cat. He was every bit of explosive as c.j spiller at clemson.

  52. aig Says:

Everyone has to have a niche. If you are a small dude, then you better offset with quickness or be a hell of a route runner or great hands. I read the scouting report that Ford is fast on the trackfield but doesnt play fast in the game.

Will wait to see how he performs. I hope you guys are right about him.

  53. priesttj Says:

Wes Welker is not a huge target he may be bigger buit not by much. The slot is perfect for punt returner types very quick and fast. That’s why I’ve always ssaid JLH should be played there. Most cases safeties play the slot or the 3rd corner with Ford that is a mismatch. H’s just too quick and fast. I watched him in the senior bowl and he needs work there but once he gets the concept he can be a nightmare.

If you watch Percy Harvin the way they use him it’simpossible to matchup that’s what you want. DMC and this kid can be explosive in that role.

  54. Thec07 Says:

Wes welker a slot guy led the league 2009..

  55. aig Says:

    Priest,

I think Nick Miller is more of a Welker than Ford from what I watched so far on the tube. I may be wrong but just my opinion.

Percy Harvin is 5-11 and 202lbs. He is def not in the league of Ford. Harvin is a bonafied RB if they put him back there too.

  56. Thec07 Says:

I am glad the scouting rpeort mentioned he ran track. that gives you the impression that he is another track star playing football. This kid has balleda ll of his life, he did the same stuff in HS, that he did in college. He is a football player first…
Should get a photo opp to shine…

Agree that JLH should be in the slot also…

  57. priesttj Says:

In Tim Browns rookie year he caught 41 passes working the slot just in the middle of the field. They couldn’t matchup with him Because Willie Gault and James Lofton were taking them deep. Left the middle for Timmie to work on LB’s.

  58. Dr. Steven Hawking Says:

Schilens is soft, time to move on. I see an injury settlement in his near future. We simply can’t count on him. It’s not that I dislike him or anything, but Jeezuz H, is he EVER healthy?

  59. Just Fire Baby Says:

Darren Sproles had all over 300 yards from scrimmage HIS FIRST 3 YEARS COMBINED!!!

Let’s hope Ford can be a little better than that.

  60. Thec07 Says:

DMAC should also spend some time in the slot…

  61. priesttj Says:

Nick Miller is as small as Ford but you’re way too gocused on the size factor. There is no size requirement to play the slot it’s just more effective if you use someone with great quicks.

  72. Just Fire Baby Says:

I hope Ford is good, and I am confidant he will be a shot in the arm for our return game.

But we tried the whole rookie starting WR last year. Let’s not do that again, please.

Chaz, DHB, Lou, JLH, and probably even Watkins should be ahead of him to start the season.

Let’s not be fooled with his use in camp. Nick Miller has all over camp last year, and we saw how that turned out.

  73. mistic1 Says:

Ford does not have to be great, that is what we dhb and murphy can become, he just needs to be dangerous when he does get his touches, which will be limited on offense. If chaz holds up ford is no 4, if chaz goes down he can be no03. No doubt the kid is dangerous.

Sproles and Steve Smith are very quick. All the small guys mentioned above are very quick. Nap Kaufman was more quick than fast. I remember Kaufman being caught from behind on long runs but getting around the DE’s was easy for him.

In watching the tube on Ford, I dont see him making quick cuts and juking people out. However, I do see him making catches with people hanging on him. So I dont doubt that he is a footballer. I sincerely hope he is quicker than what I am seeing.

All I saying is that if Darren Sproles was 6 foot 205, noboby would really care that much. But since he small, everyone thinks he is great.

This is his 6th year in the league. He has had two decent years, and he average about 250 yards rushing a year, 300 receiving and about 6th in the league in return averages.

Not impressed, and neither were the Chargers, that’s why they traded up to draft a RB.

I’ve seen this kid on reverses and he is explosive. Incidently Nap ran a 4.32 40 and I never remember him gettin caught from behind. If a guy had the angle on him yeah but not from behind no way.

Ford is not C J Spiller in terms of moves but he aint bad trust me.

Caught from behind means the guy runs you down from behind without help. In other words his speed overwhelms you. You can’t outrun him. THat’s gtting caught from behind in that clip anyone can get caught from behind

I wasn’t down on Murphy, and Murphy started because nobody was better or healthier.

Ford isn’t in that same situation, unless people get hurt.

What’s your deal? You come on here blowing smoke up your own azz because you “told” everyone how great Sproles was going to be, but I’m sure you weren’t saying shyt as 2 seasons passed and he hadn’t even scored a TD.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++==
I brought sproles into the convo to make a point aout small guys that had an impact on the team. I liked sproles at K state but F him now, as he is not a raider. So if you intepret that as smoke so beit…
However I am sure i never used the word great….

FORD isnt in the same situation…REALLY

Nobody and i mean NOBODY can predict how good a player is going to be going from college to the pro’s. First a player can be good in one system and crapy in an other. Coaches and systems make players. Look at Gannon. How many years was he a back up? Gruden had an offense that Gannon fit, then he taylored the playes, players, and schem (i dont think i spelled that right) around him.

  113. Just Fire Baby Says:

I’m going to wait to hear the injury report, if there even is one, to see if Chaz isn’t going to see the field.

If he is out, DHB and Murphy will start, right or wrong.

If Ford goes bonkers during the preseason he may have a chance, and if he does than fkn great. Put the best players on the field, no matter who, IMO.

Until I see it on the field, I’m not going all Nostradamus on a rookie. Like I said, Nick Miller was returning all kicks, taking handoffs and reverses, and catching passes all throughout training camp last year, so even that sometimes can be deceiving.

Don’t worry bro, if Ford is a baller I will give you your props, until than I’m calling your bluff.

    ********************
We need Kelly. We need someone in the middle to be willing to drop trou and stop traffic. Funniest damn thing I’ve ever seen on live NFL TV.

Seriously, Kelly can be a force in the 4-3 if he puts forth the effort. The fact that he’s going to have serious players on all sides should bring his game back to where it needs to be. He’s not a NT. Never was, never will be. But, in the 4-3 he can be a force. Houston, Seymour, Kelly & Shonasty backed by our new Heavy Duty LB corps makes for one nasty front 7. Someone not putting out 110% effort will stand out like a sore thumb. I don’t see Kelly not putting out in that environment. Can’t wait for our new D to Tatumize the opposition. We have the tools to be a top 10 or better D.

    Burgess retiring from Pats ?
    http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation
    Quote:
ESPN.com’s Len Pasquarelli, citing multiple unnamed sources, reports New England Patriots outside linebacker Derrick Burgess is mulling retirement.

Burgess did not report for the start of Patriots training camp Thursday at Gillette Stadium. The odd development comes after the 31-year-old Burgess chose to re-sign with the Patriots in June. His one-year contract has a $1.4 million base salary and included a $100,000 signing bonus.

If Burgess decides to quit, his absence would weaken an already uncertain outside linebacking corps. The Patriots ranked 22nd in sacks last year with 31. Burgess was tied for second on the team with five sacks.

Tully Banta-Cain led the way with 10. Defensive lineman Mike Wright also had five, and outside linebacker Adalius Thomas, since released, was fourth on the team with three sacks.

Burgess played all 17 games. He started four games at outside linebacker and two at defensive end.

Man, Al raped New England in that trade. 2 picks for a 1 year rental who had the same amount of sacks as Shaughnessy, yet Shaughnessy played limited time and is years younger ?

    Way to go Al !

You got Kam Wimbley for the 3rd round pick , and you also got Walter Mcfadden with the 5th rounder. For a guy that is retiring.

    Rape.

  180. JB Says:

Right now the main O-line questions are who’s at RG and who is the center. Satele is a poor choice and Carlisle, on his best day nowadays, is back-up material. Our whole season is going to come down to O-line performance. The D will win us a couple of games but it is up to the offense to bring home the wins. Victory starts in the pits. I’m not sure we have all the right horses yet. RG will get fixed but the center position is my main concern. I guess we’ll just have to wait & see.

  181. JB Says:

Al’s biggest recent rip off of the Patriots was Seymour. I predict he will become this decade’s Raider version of Lyle Alzado, but even better. Seymour was a steal. We knew what we were getting and Al will be willing to pay for it. Seymour will end up as one of the great Raider players in S&B history. Good move Al Davis.

I can see saving $ and West is a better player than Sasha AND Brown.

But the way to do that would be to sign West for the minimum after Minny buys him out instead of taking on his 4 million dollar salary.

  221. No Word Why WR Schilens Left Practice Early » Raiders Gab Says:

[...] The Oakland Tribune reports that they have still not said why WR Chaz Schilens left practice early on Thursday: The Raiders completed their second practice session Thursday without wide receiver Chaz Schilens, who left the field early on the session accompanied by a member of the athletic training staff and did not return to the field. Schilens, who missed the first eight games of the season with a broken metatarsal on his left foot and had two surgeries since, was not limping and its not known if his foot was the problem. About 30 minutes after practice, Schilens emerged from the hotel and walked back to the field house and still was not walking without a limp. The Raiders had no comment on Schilens’ early exit and the interview sessions had concluded for the day. Enjoyed this post?
