Seymour playing inside
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, July 29th, 2010 at 12:49 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Some quick hits from the Raiders first practice:
– Richard Seymour, who played end for the Raiders last year and slid inside during pass rush situations, was used exclusiively at right tackle during the first practice.
Coach Tom Cable said not to read too much into it and that Seymour could still be moved to different places on the line.
Seymour was joined inside by Tommy Kelly, with Matt Shaughnessy and Lamarr Houston at ends.
– Houston was immediately placed with the starters at left end and stayed on the field with the second group.
– First of eight walk-through style practices in the books. Coach Tom Cable says he’s pleased with recall of young players from offseason, but isn’t inclined to get to the hitting earlier because practices will stress different things.
– First impression was that Hue Jackson was a little more subdued than in offseason workouts. Cable, who stood back in the offseason and took notes, was involved in giving the offensive line their assignments before some plays.
– There was a brief period of seven-on-seven drills where quarterbacks actually threw the ball (plays during team sessions for the first eight practices are not run to completion).
The biggest play was a post by Johnnie Lee Higgins against a blown coverage, with Charlie Frye completing the pass. Darrius Heyward-Bey made a nice move to get open on a deep out route against Nnamdi Asomugha, but didn’t come back hard to enough to make the catch. He was short-hopped on another pass.
– Defensive tackle Ryan Boschetti and wide receiver Damola Adenjii were waived.
More to come from interview sessions . . .

July 29th, 2010 at 1:26 pm
This has to be a make or break season for the following Raider coaches and players:
• Tom Cable
• John Fassel
• Sanjay Lai
• Jim Michalczik
• Darren McFadden
• Michael Bush
• Mario Henderson
• Samson Satele
• Tommy Kelly
• Michael Huff
I would think that as a team, a realistic achievement goal of 8-8 is achievable with all the adds and deletions made this off season. An AFC-W title is also achievable this time around. I’m optimistically hoping for a 10-6 season.
Let it begin…..

Seymour will be played as needed. Whatever D-line position is not playing well, expect Dick to come in and right the ship.
It will start at some DT, and if the ends aren’t getting it done, he will go out there.

I forgot how painful it was to read the updates only to be reminded that plays are not completed and its this ‘little things’ focus. Like extended OTAs. Oh well.
Lets count how many times Cable says “don’t read anything into it” this camp.
Right now (1:45) DMAC is trying to take a power nap and Bush is keeping him up making him laugh with his comments on the Discovery channel show Big Cat Diaries…camp must really suck.

I dread seeing more of the same this year , Campbell drops back and is blindsided by a DE , out for weeks and every game a QB gets rocked because the offensive line problem has not been fixed since the great one of 03!

Ford isn’t stealing any WR reps away from my boy JLH…
YOU PEOPLE will be rejoicing after he catches a 15 yard pass from Campbell and takes it 60 yards to the house and does a backflip in the endzone in Week 1!
July 29th, 2010 at 2:02 pm
First-round pick Rolando McClain doesn’t feel any different after becoming $40 million richer Thursday morning, in time for the Raiders’ first practice of training camp.
“I feel exactly the same,” he said. “I mean, I don’t have the money here.”
McClain was the last of the rookies to sign, and that meant all the players were on hand for the start of camp. The middle linebacker was asked what he brings to the table, and he said “You’ll have to wait and see. I don’t know how I affect guys on the field, but I do.”
Richard Seymour spent most of the practice lined up at defensive tackle after playing at end last year. He will move around and said he actually prefers playing inside. “I am a natural inside player, but will play wherever they tell me.” … Rookie Lamarr Houston lined up outside Seymour, and Cable said he could see Houston being on the field as much as McClain.

JLH’s hometown is Sweeny Texas, home of about 3,500 people.
Amazingly, in that small community there is another former player, Elmo Wright. Mr. Wright is credited as being the first football player EVER to do an endzone celebration.
It must be in the water!!!

Anyone want to explain the point of re-signing Ryan Boschetti? Is he like a family member of someone or something.
I mean I realize you need camp buddies and such, but he didn’t even make through day one of tap-dance class? And you don’t have to cut anyone for a few weeks, so what gives?
OTA body? That is like the furthest rung down on the NFL player totem-pole.

JLH is right on pace with Jamarcus and OTA’s.
Play pretty well the first day, cut by the end of the next month!!
July 29th, 2010 at 2:23 pm
This team needs to be in TOP condition as well!
July 29th, 2010 at 2:24 pm
Fire Baby: also if i’m not mistaken Tommy Kelly missed a few days during OTA’s either with a minor injury or for personal reasons
I remember reading that the 2 starting DT’s at one time were Bryant & Joseph. both Bush & McFadden were breaking off huge gains with runs straight up the gut – shortly after that big John was signed, problem solved
July 29th, 2010 at 2:25 pm
The front four is a nice look, I always thought Seymour made more plays when he was inside anyway. Then we can rotate Henderson in,,thats if he makes the team. Kelly’s play can only improve if Seymour stays inside. I think Shaugnessy will be our leader in sacks this year.

I think it would be great to have Raider Public Service Announcement (PSA) showing Cable giving JHendersen his pregame smackdown followed by Cable saying “now get out there, do the right thing and make Oakland proud”. Visually they ought to run that PSA before every televised game.

This d-line has got me pumped up. Throw McClain behind them and we are going to be tough on D. The only potential weak spot I could see if pass coverage by our OLBs but hopefully Howard will play on passing downs.
July 29th, 2010 at 2:31 pm

Rick, let’s assume Seymour stays at DT full-time next to Tommy Kelly (absurd, but whatever)
that leaves Houston, Shaughnessy, Richardson & Groves at DE – which is fine
but you need at least 4 DT’s
We have Seymour, Kelly, Bryant and …. ???
in your scenario John Henderson gets beat out by William Joseph, Chris Cooper or Kellen Heard?

I think some people have missed the pirate ship. The value of seymour is his ability to play tackle and end. This means he flip flop with the ends, and platoon with the tackles depending on down and distance. Also there obviously has been a plan at work as early as last year, which is why scott was playing elephant last year, and we brought in more hybrid types through free agency and the draft this year. lets also not leave out the way marshall used mm 34 in that wolverine package! This is going to be a pressure defense and there will be know way for the offense to know where the heat is coming from. hendu will stuff the run in base looks on 1st down, and most second downs, but on 3rd its a crap shoot. 3rd down seymour moves inside, shuagnessy, and houston coming off the edge, wimbly and scott busting through gaps or, scott coming around the corner like charles haley. Houston and seymour are the key, because depending on where they line up they force mismatches, and limit backs and tight ends that are forced to stay in for extra protection. makes a perfect match for shut down bump and run secondary that everyone loves to complain about.

It’s a great Camp day to be a Raiders fan! Isn’t it?!
Can’t stay long…
First…RIP Jack Tatum. A great Raiders legend, and a much kinder and approachable man than his on-field image would ever let you know.
Seymour’s got a lot of leader qualities, in addition to his ability to play up and down the line. He’s one of the best, and he wants to prove it. Seymour could become a Raiders legend late, ala Alzado back in the day.
By almost any measure, Al Davis GOT IT DONE this off-season.
Time for the guys on the field to do their parts — but we gotta remember that we’ll have YOUNG PLAYERS all over the field…and young players make young-player mistakes. Talent and smarts will overcome!
Tom Cable? Tom Cable’s kept his head down, and “nose to the grindstone” the past year. His calm and optimistic approach to rebuilding this team has been pretty remarkable, actually. He’s got HIS guys believing they can get it done.
Al’s had some pretty amazing comeback stories under his regime…methinks Cable’s going to be one of them. Of course, that would mean Al’s made a comeback, too. A comeback to a winning tradition.
Oh, yeah…it CAN and WILL happen! This year? Why not?!
It’s a great Camp day to be a Raiders fan! Isn’t it?
