Day 2 practice updates here

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, July 30th, 2010 at 7:06 am in Oakland Raiders.

Getting ready to head to Napa for the second day of training camp.

The first order of business will be to see if Chaz Schilens, who left practice early during Thursday’s second session, is on the field.

Ordinarily, leaving practice early is no big deal and that could be the case here. It happens all the time, particularly early in camp, when players experience anything from muscle tightness to an upset stomach.

But Schilens’ case will be watched closely because he’s had two surgeries on his left foot within the past year for a broken metatarsal, an injury which cut short his training camp in 2009 and cost him half of the regular season. He is the most skilled player at what qualifies as a possession receiver among the wideouts on the Raiders’ inexperienced receiving corps.

Schilens walked off the practice field under his own power and returned after practice had ended, neither time on crutches, walking with a limp or wearing the dreaded protective boot of Darren McFadden fame.

Check here for updates on my Twitter account from the penalty box.

(For some reason, the media viewing area is divided this year by a line in the center. Not sure why. Perhaps to form an isolation unit if and when Poole and Kawakami arrive).

    Rockstar,

so you say that the Ravens could start Jonathan Holland at CB against Ochocinco and Ochouno, without Ed Reed, and they’ll be fine?
    Don’t know if that computes.

    Good Morning Nation!

    They were yesterdays tweets.

But he did leave out the one that said Gradkowski to Ford over the middle.

  • Just Fire Baby

If Ed Reed is not playing for the Ravens, I want to recant my prior Ravens to SB statement.

That guy is one of the top 10 players in the league at any position (or was at least).

  • raider_monsta

    RaiderRockstar:

Ahah maybe… I think theyre from yesterday… I must of some of them

  • RaiderRockstar

M: I haven’t seen enough of Holland at CB to make that determination.

since they moved him back to WR and drafted 2 DB’s i’m assuming he wasn’t that great

Tom Cable is still an idiot.

Yeah I though Holland has unsuccessful made his transition back to WR.

What a joke that was. He was one of our better WR’s in preseason last year (which I know doesn’t mean a whole lot) so what do they do?

Keep Jivin Walker and Nick Miller for no good reason, and move Holland to DB.

  • RaiderRockstar

    Domonique Foxworth – IR
Ed Reed, Lardarius Webb & Walt Harris banged up

    ***

does that hurt your secondary? without question

does it cripple your entire football team or even defense? no way

  • RaiderRockstar

    Fire Baby: Agreed

should have kept Justin Miller & Jon Holland on the roster instead

Holland was elevated from the practice squad later, wasn’t he? also given a few kick return opportunities

I want Huff to play CB, and I want to see Mitchell play SS (without rushing the passer).

    Top 12 defense!!!

  • Just Fire Baby

Holland wasn’t very good returning kicks, but than again nobody really was for us last year.

Jacoby Ford and/or Nick Miller ought to give us a nice little boost in that area this season.

I remember watching the replay of the great Bruce Pitt game and wondering why our last drive started inside the 15 yard line. Hoped on-line and Gary Russell returned the kick all of 11 yards, from the 2 to the 13, lol.

    S.Rout, and a 2nd to Baltimore for J. Gaither??

    Thoughts?

Foxworth done for the season. F. Washington PUP.

Routt and a 4th rounder for Gaither. They don’t need him at LT anymore so why overpay? Isn’t Routt a former 1st rounder?

  • bcz24

That would be awesome Raccoon, ‘cept it would leave us VERY thin at CB. We would have to be in the market for a free agent corner if we did that, no question

  • bcz24

Routt wasnt a first rounder…. second maybe? I only know this for certain because I compiled the list of first rounders on the Raiders the other day.

  • http://media-2.web.britannica.com/eb-media/63/60563-004-52A399D4.jpg Dakota

Just move Huff to CB…he sucks as a S anyhow.

  • http://atm Raider O

    Good Morning Raccoon.

I would make that trade if it is Routt & a 3rd, but I will not trade our 2nd. We don’t have a 1st next year due to the Seymour Trade.

  • RaiderRockstar

    S.Rout, and a 2nd to Baltimore for J. Gaither??

    Thoughts?

    ***

I would trade Routt for Gaither in a heartbeat!

but also giving up a 2nd rounder?

Baltimore was only asking for a 2nd rounder in the first place, weren’t they?

we’re missing a 1st rounder next year too (Seymour trade)

if we pitch in anything to pair with Routt I hope it’s a low pick (Rounds 5-7)

Cable is pretty content with the team right now though, so a trade seems highly unlikely

  • http://media-2.web.britannica.com/eb-media/63/60563-004-52A399D4.jpg Dakota

Yep, you are right, he was the 38th overall pick…almost a first rounder but not quite.

Like Al cares about how the Timeout Coordinator feels about the roster. lmao

  • Just Fire Baby

Al Davis would probably ask B-More for Gaither and a 2nd rounder for just Routt.

  • http://atm Raider O

    Dakota,

I don’t think Huff sucks as a FS, but I think he can do more as a CB/ NB/ FS. Use him like they did in Texas!! Use him like we did Sir Charles!!!!

  • http://media-2.web.britannica.com/eb-media/63/60563-004-52A399D4.jpg Dakota

Branch and Mitchell as our FS and SS with Huff as the nickle CB…maybe Huff will finally make a play?

  • DirtyRaccoon

Yeah, pretty tough to give up our first pick in 2011.

We need to keep that 2nd round pick to get S. Wisniewski!!!

  • RaiderRockstar

without Routt, you’re looking at 2 options

    CB:
    Asomugha
    Johnson
    Huff
    McFadden
    Thomas/Ware/Porter

    S:
    Branch
    Mitchell
    Eugene
    Brown/Boyd

    OR

    CB:
    Asomugha
    Johnson
    McFadden
    Ware
    Brown/Thomas/Porter

    S:
    Branch
    Huff
    Mitchell
    Eugene

    either way, we’d be fine!

    J,

Let’s have a nice smoke session bro!!!

  • bcz24

Huff would get eaten alive covering slot guys in our man to man scheme as a NB… worse than routt. He is a zone guy, much like Meangelo. He does not excell in press coverage.

  • DirtyRaccoon

    2011 Draft

    2nd, C, Stephen Wisniewski

    3rd, CB, Curtis Brown

    4th, WR, Terrance Toliver

    6th, FB Owen Marecil

    7th, QB Colin Kaepernick

you think he’ll fall out of the Top 60?

    or we’ll trade up?

  • http://atm Raider O

    Raccoon,

I want us to draft S Wisniewski, but I don’t think he will last to the 2nd. (I hope he does)
I also want us to draft a QB, RB, CB, OL, FB, and DL.

  • DirtyRaccoon

RR no not out of the top 60, but maybe into the 40 range.

We prob need to trade up.

Pouncy II would be good also, but I would rather WIZ II.

  • RaiderRockstar

no not out of the top 60, but maybe into the 40 range.

The Shadow King can cover!!! He just can’t hit or tackle!

  • RaiderRockstar

Defense working on picking up running back and tight ends in pass coverage – that’s big question mark for new linebackers

I dont have any links, but everything I have ever read concerning Huff is that he is a zone guy, doesnt do well in tight coverage.
