I’m not even saying that the defensive line is going to be bad next season. I think the Raider defense is going to surprise a lot of people. But at some point you have to think long-term.

The fact is, Tommy Kelly isn’t living up to the contract, and best case scenario, Richard Seymour has a few solid years left in the tank.

It’s likely that Heard won’t even make the team. He’s a converted offensive tackle, and an undrafted free agent signing.

Bryant hasn’t seen a lot of action. He’s behind Seymour, Kelly, and Henderson on the depth chart. And if it ever comes down to him and Tommy Kelly on the offensive line… well, we went down that road last season. Did you like what you saw?

The linebackers are definitely going to do much better this season. But they need a defensive line capable of occupying blockers.

I like Houston and Shaughnessy at defensive end. Seymour is obviously a solid player, but is an aging veteran. Assuming that Desmond Bryant can eventually take over for Seymour and be even half the player Seymour was (which is a pretty huge assumption, as Bryant is another UDFA), he’s going to have to play next to someone. Maybe Houston and McClain have a ripple effect on the rest of the defensive line… maybe. But eventually the Raiders are going to have to dedicate some draft picks to legitimate interior line prospects. Lest we hinge our hopes on an aging vet and UDFA scrubs…

My god man they got some young interior lineman named Des Bryant,Lamarr Houston and this kid Hearne and some I didn’t name. The Dline is better than it’s been in years. What is it your worried about? jesus!!

All that said, I’m hoping Kelly can end up being the player Big Al paid him to be. We’ll see if that happens this season.

Personally, I think getting some more young interior linemen through the draft isn’t such a bad idea.

Pain Mcclain and an offense that can occasionally convert a 3rd and 8 will do much more for our run d than some 5th round NT.

Well I would certainly hope so. McClain was a first-round pick for a reason. And of course, you’re right about our offense on third and long.

But it’s pretty clear the defensive line has room for improvement. Lamarr Houston is going to be a big part of that. But Richard Seymour isn’t getting any younger, and if his play drops off and Tommy Kelly ends up being the best interior lineman on the team, the Raiders are not in great shape.
